    Hey honies! Glad you like the yarn I'm using. It's from a company called Yarn & Colors. The gray is called Zen, a tubular nylon/cotton blend and it's color 096; the brown/orange is called Cheerful, a voluminous wool/acrylic blend, and it's color 026. You can find these yarns on Yarn And Colors website - www.yarnandcolors.com/

    A tip for beginners: Even though I am still a beginner my tip is don’t let other people tell you what is right and wrong. Choose what it is comfortable for you for example I was told I have to hold my hook like a pencil but the way I hold it makes me 10 times faster than holding it like a pencil! If you do something differently doesn’t mean it isn’t right!

    • @caitlynbecker3626
      @caitlynbecker3626 3 года назад +78

      This! Also good to note that you don't have to hold every hook the same. For example if I'm using big yarn, meaning big hooks (looking at you Bernat Blanket Extra) I change my hook grip to accommodate. I usually do a modified pencil/chopstick hold, but when using extra large hooks I knife hold. It is ALL about what is comfortable for YOU.

    I did this whole thing and I'm really proud of myself! I definitely started again multiple times and practiced each individual stitch a ton, dropped a few stitches here and there, and had some issues with tension (tight at the beginning, more even as I went along), but I learned so much! Especially foundational things that I would have definitely missed if I jumped straight into patterns (which I kind of did, but came back to this to nail the basics). Learning to identify stitches by the v at the top was definitely the most useful take away for me, as I'm horrible at reading stitches and get so confused when things come out slightly wonky and I don't know why. Turns out I was putting hook into the wrong place half the time lol. I still need to get better at reading the back and front of stitches, but thank you so much for making this! I'll definitely be coming back to it over and over. You explained things so clearly and just watching how your hands moved was hugely helpful in itself.

    Toni, I love how you SHOW and explain how and why to do the basic stitches, including how to hold the hook and the yarn. I do find the tip to use only one turning chain for half double crochet rows and double crochet rows very useful to produce a straight strong edge for seaming.
    You've made an excellent video for me to share with beginners.

    I just want to say a big thank you!! I have dyspraxia so learning new skills is always frustrating and difficult as I learn at a slower pace. Thank you for this video, Toni! I've been crocheting for a little over 7 years now but decided to get a little refresher and am so glad I did! The way you only chain 1 for double crochet rows is intriguing to me and I like the look so much better than what a chain 3 gives you - I am definitely going to have to try that and not chaining before fastening off.

    I just wanted to say a huuuuuge thank you for this video! I've watched 5, possibly more, videos teaching people how to crochet and they'd just say 'flip your work like a book' but not really explain what you were meant to be looking at, or how to find the stitches to work into at the top. This was perfect! The yarn is also really, really helpful to see each of the stitches. Sometimes I think the added bit of fluff gets in the way of seeing the stitches when you've just started, so this really made the process a lot cleaner. I know now that flipping the work will simply mean I'm looking at the bumpy back, the point of a stitch marker & why we hook a single stitch at the end of each row. Big, big thanks!

    I do not know how I ended up on your page but I am blessed and thankful that I did. I feel my Grandmother in Heaven must of sent me to you :) she was the crochet lady of the century. I learned it when I was in my 20's and never picked it up until now. I am 67 years young today :) I love love how you explain so clearly and show every single step. It is so appreciated. I know this video is from 3 years ago. It may take me another 67 years to go through all your videos lol but for now I am learning it this way - YOUR WAY. Because I love how neat and perfecto your stitches are. I got to get that tension right because my first one is curled up so I will start all over again. No matter how many times it takes me I will get it. I am determinedd to do this and with your help and guidance I just know I will make it. Thank you so much for explaining so clearly and distinctly! I can't wait to see the rest of your videos but I may have to stay on this one for a week lol... sorry this is so long. I will do this in Memory of my Beloved Grandmother who crocheted me a tablecloth with that real fine yarn. I remember she would watch Lawrence Welk and not even look at what she was doing. She was so good.I still have that tablecloth! Thank you so much Ms TL Yarn Craft Store :)

Toni, your videos have helped me so much. Your content is excellent and I very much appreciate your inviting / all inclusive attitude. Love the video with your mom. Would love to meet both of y'all. Thank you so much for this video. My grandma taught me how to chain when I was 8. She died when I was 9. 50 years later, I thought it would be fun to actually learn. I started crocheting 18 months ago and just jumped in with both feet, learning as I went along. I started with amigarumi (so cute) and then moved on to pixie hats.
    My genZ daughter decided she might be able to sell a few of those hats and asked me to teach her to crochet. To say that we have completely different learning styles would be an understatement! When I noticed she was getting frustrated with me, I remembered that I had saved this video. Your steady pace, great visuals, clear instructions, and kind voice were just the ticket! Plus, she can now pick up her hook and yarn and tune in when it's convenient for her!
    Thank you Thank you Thank you!!!!

    OMG I have been trying to learn how to crochet for SO long and I have looked at probably hundreds of YT tutorials, books, even a “learn to crochet for kids” book, my mom has tried to teach me, and nothing was clicking for me. I came across your channel at the recommendation of Elise Rose Crochet and I am so SO thankful that I found her and then because of that found you!! You’re the first person who actually explains WHAT I am looking at and how to count the Vs and seeing what the different stitches look like. I made a couple swatches from these beginner tutorials and now I am continuing to explore your channel and others to hone my skills and hoping to start a shawl that has an easy to understand pattern/tutorial. By far the best learn to crochet video! I was looking for a refresher, haven’t crocheted in a very long time after learning how to knit. The person who taught me to crochet always told me it was too tight and told me to adjust my tension. After watching this video now I know what I really needed to do was move the yarn down my hook to maintain a consistent stitch size! This is the only video I’ve seen that mentions it. Love your teaching style overall!

    What a wonderfully easy tutorial you have offered those of use who needed it! My young grandsons (8yrs and 6 yrs) wanted to learn how to crochet and gained a lot from my lessons but I was "rusty" and not too good at it. By viewing your simple beginner's video you filled in some gaps in my "steps" list and helped my little ones by having them see another "Left handed" crocheter ! By the way, you and I hold our hook and yarn exactly the same way, which made me feel so happy! The last time I saw the same "handling" was from my grandmother (who passed at 100+)! Saying THANK YOU doesn't seem enough but, yes, THANK YOU!!! :)
