I actually heard this is the first song that Bryan Ferry wrote. Bryan didn't have the confidence to include it on their first or second albums, but it was included on their 3rd album. I thought it was very personal for him.

This is the band doing parody of the crazy "church" preachers swindling the rubes out of their cash. It's perfect satire.

I have heard that the band recorded this overlong instrumental track, then Bryan went home and wrote the lyrics overnight and came into the studio next morning and sang the complete song over the backing track.

I’m about 99% certain that that was originally a quote from Manzanera and was about Mother of Pearl. I have heard Manzanera later use the same story for Love is the Drug as well. With the band being super impressed with what Ferry delivered as well.
It was Ferry’s typical way of working to do the lyrics last.

from a Roxy fansite: "This song featured The London Welsh Male Voice Choir who joined the band on stage at one of the shows on the 1973 tour. Although this song appears on the third Roxy Music album, Bryan Ferry is quoted to have said that it was the first song he ever wrote."

I honestly cannot remember the last time I heard this played on any radio station, but have always loved it. I've long thought that if you could get into a lab and somehow blend together Leonard Cohen and Sacha Distel you might well end up with Bryan Ferry ( and mean that in a good way).

It’s a strange song in a way. Took my about 30 to really appreciate this track.
For the Stranded tour they closed with this track. Seems a bit like the white Tux that Ferry was wearing at the time. Contrary. What do you expect me to wear? How do you expect me to close a show?
Well how about me doing the opposite.

You do realise it's a satire on US fundamentalist music? I mean ... did you listen to the actual words?
