You would have to own both. Give me a DSG S3 for daily city driving. Especially for when you just can't be arsed and just want to be cossetted and comforted on your journey home from work. And the Civic Type R for dry sunny weekend days with maybe a track visit or two. Fair review, if you need to commute, then carry a wife, and/or golf clubs, parents, offspring, bulky purchases, rubbish to tip, or do other mundane stuff but still enjoy a good drive, it’s the S3. And that’s why I’ve just ordered one. Young, unencumbered by family, no commuting drive, then the Type R makes a case for itself.

When I had to replace my totaled 2016 VW Golf R (a lady ran a stop sign and t-boned me), I figured I'd buy a 2024 VW Golf R as a replacement. The $15,000 mark-up my local dealers wanted wasn't going to happen, and I was able to buy a "new" 2023 Audi S3 for an $8000 discount. Yes, it would have been nice to have another manual like my 2016 Golf R, but I love the S3. Did I know about the Honda Civic Type R? Yes. Would I consider buying one? Not really. It's styling is too much of a boy-racer for me. But my "inner boy-racer" is sure curious about the upgrades for the 2025 Audi S3.

That is subjective. My daily is an STi RA - way more raw than the civic but I opt for that over our golf or mini almost every time because it does 'daily' but with 320bhp and at 1260kg, it is a hoot on the way. And even with a lightened RCM flywheel it is easy enough in traffic.

My daily drive for the last year and a half is an FL5 (actually currently my only car), and I don't get comments like that. No issues with it whatsoever, rain or shine.
In comfort mode it's comfortable when cruising, fast (yes - even in the pouring wet), reasonably economical. It's very torquey so you can pretty much leave it in one gear unless coming to a stop. Clutch is light and linear, so it's not annoying.
The only slight issue is the turning radius which is pretty awful, so parking in a tight spot can be a reenactment of the famous Austin Powers scene.

My M3 was stolen so costs meant a step down. I had 3 Golf Rs prior to the M3 but the mk8 interior and infotainment you wouldn't accept on a £20k car let alone £50k. The Civics problem is its great fun only 10% of the time. The rest of the time which is 90% of ownership it falls down. Interior is low rent, infotainment is poor, sound system poor, no sunroof, no leather and on motorways the noise and gearbox drive you mad, it also chews through tyres. I went Audi in the end, the S3 is better for 90% of general ownership, the quality is better and the infotainment and B&O sounds are in a different league. On a track the Honda is better but you don't live on a track, motoring journalists judge cars too much on the Nordschleife because a car is 1/10 quicker. On a wet/blind poorly surfaced typical A/B road the Audi disappears from the Honda. My M3 would decimate the Honda. The Audi in the real world is the better quality ownership proposition for 90% . That's why I got the new S3 to replace the M3

A few reasons. One is to drive down sales. Sounds mad but when they report that no one is buying cars like these anymore it gives them the perfect excuse to stop making them and push everyone towards the one size fits all SUV which will preferably be an EV. The other reasons are EV R&D costs and they are still filling losses sustained by the pandemic financial black hole. It's horrific to be honest

    • @TassieLorenzo

@@robsmall6466 "One is to drive down sales ... perfect excuse to stop making them" I think it is more so that these high CO2/km cars are (really) bad for their fleet WLTP CO2/km average, and that is why they don't want to sell too many of them. For every one CTR or every one S3 they need to sell *two* zero emission BEVs to get back to the required CO2/km target.
Under the similar CAFE system in the USA, Dodge were paying $200m p/a in fines for all the V8 Chargers and Challengers they were selling. Hence now they have discontinued those cars.

Type R great for warm, dry climates where the sticky tyres work and you don’t have to tip-toe around when they are not up to temp… but for the U.K… 80% of the time it is too cold or too wet to explore. Not the car’s fault, but reality. And on a damp, cool day, it will be more fun and less scary to have an AWD S3 or M240i.

How accomplished these cars are "on a flowing B road in any weather" doesn't exist anymore as our roads are badly pot hoted and either clogged with Sunday drvers or with 40/50mph zones... so the only place to really enjoy cars is the track. Hence the Type R is the obvious answer. The old accesssible hot hatch argument is becoming more and more irrelevant as it's for a world that doesn't exist any more.

You won’t be upset with either and most people will make their choice by the brand they prefer so are biased in their views, awd vs front wheel drive if you like driving then the awd is the better choice but then do you want auto or manual as that will influence it but I have driven plenty of RS models on the track and there is nothing wrong with the Auto plus it changes gears quicker. Personally if you’re after a hot hatch then spend a bit more and chose between the RS3 and A45s

In UK it rains all the time. Try accelerating, turning, or both on wet pavement in a front wheel drive car. If you like a Type R, all the best to you, but don't argue a losing point. Type R may be an ok track car. It may even be one of the best front wheel drive cars out there for the price point, but that's all it is, a "great front wheel drive car" for track under perfect conditions. Otherwise, it sucks. You can get hyped up by the sales pitch all you want, but it doesn't change the facts. Type R is a one-dimensional front wheel drive car (one trick pony).

I'll absolutely agree it is a fast road/track car though. When I drive them, I just do not feel 'special', the interior is a let-down, the ride is great on a snooker table road, but is very annoyingly uncomfortable on a normal road, and in this era, the car is really not fast enough.

All that for a car that will send you straight to the chiropractor after every drive. Last gen Civic was a more usable car that was half the price and performed just as well.
