      @@christomo I’m sick of it fogging up… I’ve tried many things but taking it off might be the best!
      Well done watching it through! It’s such a nice section of water for us when the wing blows from the north. I tried the run in reverse a few days ago and it mostly wasn’t good, no fetch to start and a mediocre end.
      Your conditions give me a chill thinking about it! Thankfully I’m still in bed with a hot cup of tea!

    For conditions like in this video, what size of the Fireball, Art V2, ArtPro or Spitfire would you use if relying on a parawing for getting up on foil? Would the Fireball 1070, Art V21099, SF1180 or ArtPro 1201 already be unnecessarily big? (let's assume that the wind never drops..). Or would you stay on the bigger sizes to avoid to get "TOO fast" if that is even a possibility? Happy New Year!!

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  2 дня назад +2

      @@michaelkihn8311 I’m not sure it matters too much how one gets in foil. More important is staying on foil and linking bumps in a sustainable way… that’s not just pumping.
      The 1099v2 would be a fun surfy option if the getting on foil was easily taken care of.
      I size my foil to ride the bumps, the ocean sets the playing field and there is only so many ways to go about it.
      A fast foil can easily become underfoiled… and you don’t want to be out in bumps underfoiled if your goal is to ride unpowered!
      So yea, I’m often on the bigger sizes for the riding aspect 🤙🤙

  • @michaelkihn8311
    @michaelkihn8311 3 дня назад +1

    Do you think that amongst those bigger fireball sizes one will dethrone the 1401 in terms of pump-efficiency? Or might this going to become covered by new PNG V2 sizes?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  2 дня назад +2

      @@michaelkihn8311 the fb could possibly do it. I mean it will for a group of people… there are so many of us riding gear experiencing different things!
      The biggest fireball that is coming has good lift at low speeds where as the 1401 has more surface area. They likely meet somewhere in the middle.
      There will be so many foils in the future too. I’m sure we’ll get some pump and glide style ones and even more that nobody has seen yet.
      🤙🤙

    Looks like you took right to the fireball foil. The conditions seemed pretty mild for the speed you were carrying. I can see your pumps are very delicate and shallow. You also touched down much less on the tail of the board than the other videos. Congrats.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  7 дней назад +1

      @@aquilesmasdmd I did, the fireballs were very instinctual for me. They are a classic feeling well behaved high aspect.
      These conditions were perfect for me! I like nice solid average conditions… I don’t need epic conditions to have fun.
      I was out in 40kts plus today and it was intense, fun in its own ways but intense. The morning run was more like 20-25kts and felt perfect! I can’t wait to see and upload the footage of both.
      The lack of touchdowns is likely part board, part slightly long mast. I’ve cut my girlfriends 80cm pro mast down to 76cm and took ownership of it! It’s excellent.

    • @aquilesmasdmd
      @aquilesmasdmd 7 дней назад

      Our Florida conditions on the west coast are almost always mild so the bigger Foil is kinda a requirement. I’m like you. I will give up a little speed and performance in order to get on foil faster. Maybe I’m gettin old and just don’t wanna constantly ride the struggle bus anymore. 😂

    Looking at getting the frank/axis board as my 2nd board into my DW journey. As they are so stable would you recommend going down in volume? What volume would you recommend for a 83kg rider. I currently ride the 7'6" by 18" wide at 113L sunnova aviator. Will i see much benefit changing boards? looking to get into faster foils and ocean conditions with 2nd board. Currently comfortable in the bay runs.

    Great video! What FB size would replace the 999 ART?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  11 дней назад +1

      I have not used the art999 for downwinding.
      My hypothetical quiver at that end would be:
      1401
      1201/1180
      1099v2
      1070fb
      1000fb/999v2* theoretically
      The 999 might sit between 1070 and 1000

      @ the 1401 will still be the king of bottom end, even up against the largest fireball… the fireballs are going to be such a sweet addition to anyone’s quiver. I’m likely to do a full quiver of the 1000 and up… maybe even the next size down from the 1000!

    Nice one dude! So you rode the Spittie 1180 a lot recently, a foil I also love, which of the new Fireballs if any will be the replacement? I've got the 1070 for bigger conditions so thinking to go 2 sizes up but maybe not necessary? Rode the Spittie 1100 for the first time in ages yesterday, kinda forgot what a great foil that is as well, so surfy for the size. Suppose I'll have to put the Franks Board on the list as well :)

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  11 дней назад +1

      @@andycorbe Definitely put a Frank board on the list! They are the best I’ve tried by a mile, as in, they are in a different league.
      Your thinking sounds correct to me by going two sizes up in the fireball range. That will likely cover the 1180 and give you even more range beyond. My guess is that you’ll end up with all the latest fireballs to come I definitely will. It is a beautiful quiver! But your idea of skipping the next size up from the 1070 is a good start.

    Great video the fireball looks like it goes really well. How does it compare to the 1090Art V2 from your last video. Its looks similar in speed. Also curious about the Frank boards Ive heard they are a really good thing and make a huge difference and are also really stable considering how narrow they are.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  12 дней назад +1

      @@jockharcourt9936 good questions.
      1099v2 probably turns better than similar span fb (might just be due to slower speeds) but it might not actually be slower… and has more bottom end feel maybe… it’s so hard to actually compare.
      Fb has more glide, 1099v2 more roll
      I’m stoked on both currently, but time will tell with which one I grab first from the van in the future.
      Frank boards are excellent, honestly next level performance… I know that gets used a lot but here it’s fitting. I can’t go back to my old boards, I tried. They are all sold or in the process of.
      Frank’s are not just stable for their size theyre just stable… probably not a very first board for older or less athletic guys but likely fine 2nd board. I’m not even sure about that… they might actually make an ok first board too, definitely first board material for flat water stuff.
      The Frank boards want to gallop forward, give them a kick and they surge forward.
      🤙🤙 I’m so stoked at the moment, truly.

      @@downwind_drifter Thanks man. Love your videos they are really informative. I'll be popping into Surffx to get my name on a frank board for sure. One of the guys there has one and told me its an absolute game changer. I've got the V2 999 and V2 1099 still getting used to my 1099 but the 999 is the only foil I ride now. Selling all my spitfires but those bigger Fireballs look really interesting. The speed your doing looks really similar between the fireball and the V2 1099 but time will tell as speed isn't everything sometimes.

      Thats awesome that you are using the 999, I find foils that size very advanced to use due to the roll availability... I should try up my game and spend more time on smaller foils.
