    Hey Jason
    I met you today at Jones Bay( Joe). I went and did the run from Sandspit to Jones Bay. It was pretty good. I did it in four goes, it was almost too windy at times, with pretty big confused bumps. It was harder to get up on foil than I expected. Stoked to do my first downwinder in NZ, definitely need a bigger foil then the spitfire 1100 , just need to figure out which one to get ! Hopefully next time I’m back I can try Waiwera to Jones. Nice to meet you after watching your clips for the last year !

      @@jglazer11 yeah mate stoked to meet you too.
      You made it! And on the 1100! Excellent work.
      The 1100 is not easy to Down Wind the 1180 is far far easier. And the 1201 is also excellent and in a similar wind range or pump size range as those two foils.
      If you can wait a few weeks there will be some new foils out that will supersede any current available foils for Downwinding.
      I would suggest either of the two biggest fireballs that are coming. Appear that with a 70 fuse and a 45 skinny perhaps and you’ll be away laughing. Actually you can probably get away with a 60 crazy short advance plus fuse… In fact I use the silly short just to complicate things with the biggest new fireball!
      Again well done going out in those conditions! Stay strong, stay in touch 🤙🤙

      @@downwind_drifter I'm using a traditional Quickblade UV82 which I bought after I recognized that my shoulder wasn't able to handle the 92sqin paddle I already owned (for SUPing). I started flat water paddle ups last year and may be able to handle a 90+ paddle now but as you already mentioned: sometimes you need a higher paddle cadence and that's where smaller paddles come in handy. I'm interested in the Axis paddle...

      @ the axis one has been good, noticeably quicker through the water than the ppc 90 and with good catch.
      I still have to adapt each time to the smaller 80 blade as I find myself leaning on it as if it’s the 90…
      I am interested in trying more of a popsicle stick shape.

    Another insightful and honest video! Thanks so much! Could you do one, explaining some of those terms I started hearing more frequently like "bay runs" (vs. whatever is the opposite), fetch (how does one know that it is a 4-6km fetch?) .. well any terminology which the average winger doesn't care too much about but which seems crucial to consider for succesful and joyful/predictable downwinding.. 🙏🙏🙂

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  7 дней назад +2

      @@michaelkihn8311 I’m happy you asked
      In a nutshell Bay run just means short fetch to me. Short fetch being the distance the wind and bump travels to get to you over water.
      I’m sitting next to Sam Kynman-Cole and he is already counting what I’m saying…
      But! If you’re in the middle of a body of water let’s say a lake and the diameter of the lake is 6 km and if you’re in the middle of that body of water the fetch would be 3 km from any direction to get to you.
      The shorter the pitch over water the smaller and tighter and weaker the bumps will be. So a 10 km wind over 3 km of water would create a bump that you couldn’t ride… But if that 10kt wind travelled an entire ocean to get to you that bump would be significantly bigger and more powerful even though it’s the same windspeed ! And you would likely be able to ride it on a big Foil.
      So ocean conditions typically mean huge Fetch
      Bay conditions would typically be a small fetch 10 to 20 km or so.
      Hope this helps
      🤙🤙

    Interesting video, you speak clear, it's nice to listen even for me. I'm French so that's nice. I have a little remark about the 72 mast. It is an amazing mast, and yes it is short, but in my own opinion it doesn't restrict me at all in my turns thanks to the incredibale tip breach abality of the Fireball. With the Fireball I can turn very high on the mast without bother at all about tip breach, it's incredible. So I think for me the Fireball removes the turn restriction we could feel with the 72 mast.

      Thanks for sharing.
      Yea, for downwind I have had no issue with the 72 mast.
      I often use the bigger foils and there is a lot of span to keep under the water… sometimes I’ve struggled with horizontal tip breaches which can still drop me. It’s only when surfing downwind or taking steep drops where I likely shouldn’t be.
      I used my girlfriends 80cm one day and forgot that I was on it and treated it like the 72cm. I was surprised when I got back to land that I didn’t realise! I was winging. It made me realise I can still utilise the slightly longer 80cm mast, but I’ve found it much harder for me to paddle up compared to the 72cm.
      I can’t remember what I said in the video but I have since cut the 80cm mast down to 76cm. I’m loving it currently! It still has the east of paddle up but has just a touch more depth for the big foils. It’s more draggy and such but I’m happy being able to surf a little more freely.
      I’m stoked to hear that I’m understandable! I struggled when I was in France! I couldn’t even seem to order a Big Mac 😅 that was a long time ago now.
      Thanks for letting me know your thoughts.

    When you talk about the Crazyshort or Sillyshort Fuses for your bigger foils, do you refer to the black advance+ fuses or does that rule of thumb apply also to the older "Black Advance" Fuses? (the non-advance black fuses don't feel right on those bigger wings, that at least I know). But Advance vs Advance+?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  7 дней назад +1

      @@michaelkihn8311 I typically always talk about the advance plus
      I don’t have much experience these days with the non-advanced plus and I couldn’t speak for that piece of equipment .
      Long story short any advice I’m giving is typically for the advance plus unless stated otherwise .
      I find the non-advanced plus so the older style fuse very difficult to create a nice feeling system… I always feel like it’s lifting and I can’t get on top of it .
      This advanced plus feeling more skating and easier to control the bigger foils !

    When you note that the 1099V2 will be 'too fast' for a beginner, help me understand what that means on the water? Thanks for all your videos, great stuff!

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  9 дней назад +3

      The faster you go, the faster you will need to process what’s going on around you as far as reading the bumps. You also have to keep a higher speed to not come off foil.
      If you have a slow foil that works well at slow speeds you can visually take in your surroundings, process the information and make the bumps work for you. If you don’t have much experience this is a great way to learn.
      If on a faster foil in that same situation you’ll be traveling much faster and can’t let the foil get too slow. This can cause panic and stress and make the rider pump to stay on foil, overall it’s a stressful situation making it difficult to learn good habits.
      To summarise, a fast foil needs somewhere to go in a hurry, If you don’t know where that is, you’re likely to end up in a bad spot and slogging your way out of it.
      Thanks for sharing the stoke 🤙🤙

    Hi, I had been suffering from shoulder pain for years until I discovered Dr. John M. Kirsch’s book. The aproach is simple: creating the space needed for the tendons to heal through hanging&exercises. Hope it helps. Thanks for the video

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  9 дней назад +1

      @@rodrigoindarte6407 I’ll try take a look, thank you.
      I used to rock climb a lot and would train for it daily, hanging on my skeletal system was actually an issue doing damage. It was thought that hanging with muscles engaged was the better training method as it was less likely to do damage. We would then hang using skeletal systems when on rock performance was required.
      I believe there are 3 main shoulder types as far as skeletal systems go. I can’t remember the names but there is a hook like feature in the shoulder itself… those of us with a predominant hook should be careful raising arms above our heads as the shoulders are not mechanically suited for it. There’s a middle ground structure where it’s fine but can be over used causing issues. Then there are the lucky ones that have care free shoulders and much less of a hook feature that can paint the ceiling everyday of the week no problem.
      This is just have remembered information at this point but I was in the middle to bad structure that would cause inflammation pretty quickly. I had many physios and a couple mri’s over the years which were not pleasant getting contrast dye needled into my inner shoulder socket by a robot!
      Ps I just reread the exercises part, I had fixated on the hanging part… that makes good sense 🤙😅🤙

    • @rodrigoindarte6407
      @rodrigoindarte6407 9 дней назад

      @ ok I see. I actually had surgery in one of my shoulders because the « hook » shoulder structure had worsen during a ski jump at high speed gone wrong ( landed on my shoulder…). I am trying to avoid surgery on the other shoulder through Dr. Kirsch exercises, so far it appears to be going well. Just a small clarification: the hanging exercises are totally pasive, zero muscle engagement (my worst pains would indeed be triggered by pull ups or engaging shoulder tendons while hanging). In other words, the hanging part is just to slowly « open up » the space in which the tendons are supposed to move. Then the exercises are (NOT hanging) supposed to achieve 2 goals from my understanding: 1) increase the blood flow in tendons to encourage healing and reduce inflammation, 2) to strengthen the back/shoulder muscles that will help maintain good posture of the shoulder and keep open any additional room/space gained through passive hanging.
      Another issue in the shoulders is actually the bursa which sometimes gets easily trapped in an inflammatory loop (why encouraging blood/lymphatic flow sometimes helps).
      Happy christmas 🙂!

    Aspect ratio
    The ratio of a wing's span to its mean chord. A high aspect ratio wing is long and narrow, while a low aspect ratio wing is short and wide. Aspect ratio is used to predict a wing's aerodynamic efficiency.
    Glide ratio
    A metric that describes how far a canopy travels forward for every unit of distance traveled downward. For example, a glide ratio of 5 means the canopy travels 500 meters forward for every 100 meters of altitude lost.

    • @damien130970
      @damien130970 9 дней назад +2

      I think you will find that a higher aspect ratio like the 13 will give you more glide, but I’m not sure it is formulaic in that 12 AR will give you a 1 in 5 glide and a 13 will give you 1 in 6 glide. In planes, glide ratio will diminish with weight so you would need to factor that in. Said more simply, higher aspect ratios foils have a better lift/drag ratio which makes it glide more gooder.😂 Bring out the hydraulic engineers for a better description.
