What an epic view from above!
@@Seb.B. 🤙😎🤙 How’s the Downwinding journey going?
Also seems like you were the last to get on foil and you ended up passing everyone. Or am I wrong. Cause the fireballs keep a fast average speed
@@aquilesmasdmd yip I was essentially last up. I didn’t pass John or Scott, the 3 of us are all within the same speed range all else being the same, as in same start on no falls. I typically surf a bit more than them and very very rarely do I think of racing… to date anyway. The fireballs hold a decent pace and more importantly are very easy to use which makes keeping a good pace easy.
Really nice drone footage 🤙😎
Agreed Thanks for sharing the stoke 🤙🤙
What sort of issue would be possible with the 1000 fb that you mentioned? I assume it was a bugger to get up. Anyway, safe flight. Cheers
@@damien130970 😅 it took all my efforts to get it up! I’ll upload the vid at some point. The 1000fb foil felt like it had a build up of clear coat on the connection point, and I wondered if it changed the angle of attack to my disadvantage. This might be wishful thinking 🤙😅🤙
Superb! How did STM on the 1250 go?
I think I got footage of him and might turn it into a vid. I think he did really well, certainly his best onshore session to date! I’ll see if I can get his water speed track for the vid. Thanks for sharing the stoke 🤙🤙
Good stuff, interesting seeing all the progression. Also good to see how the 1250 coped in 1070 conditions.
Interesting how much more you struggled to get on foil with the 1070.
A lot of it is mental… when I got it up it came up easy, and same with other times in the past. I need to adapt to the equipment 😅 The 1000 on the other hand seems a different level! That was tough for me! 🤙🤙
Just a question? How do you cut down a 3k carbon mast? What was your process. I may need a box of tissues for the years I’ll shed as you describe the process😂.
It wasn't an easy decision but ultimately it turned out to be good choice so far... I weighed up the resale value the most as the biggest issue. The guy who did it had done it a few times before. He pointed out that drilling carbon - redrilling the bolt holes - can be a bit hit or miss for accuracy. I wanted it cut enough that I was willing to take this risk. You have to decide a length and then you just cut it! He cut 4cm off which is enough to remove the entire fuse connection. With the stub/raw edge that is left you rebuild a fuse connection around it, redrill down into it and put in the lugs that take the bolts. He did a great job! and its everything I hoped for!! I now have a 76cm ultra high modulus pro mast.
@ holy crap. That guy has absolute balls of steel! 😂 good on him.
@@aquilesmasdmd rumor has it that they are actually carbon, and on schedule to become diamonds any time soon.
Nice run 🤙😎

It was his first run back after some time away… Shaan at the end loved it too, I don’t remember his report… Scott who didn’t make it on to camera took off earlier than Jon and I and ended up in the washing machine 😅 by that first point we all try to cut left to avoid.
I admire your creative process. You accept imperfection, you experiment and improve, one video at a time. Gradually you've found ways to make the best downwind footage out there. You best render the bumps and what the rider sees which is pretty difficult.

Would some negative shim on the Skinny 45 create similar results like changing to a Skinny 40? (would be cheaper 🙈). After investigating a little on how people shim the skinnies, I came to the conclusion that 0,5 degree +/- shim might make it feel like the adjacent size up/down of Skinny.. would you agree more or less?
@@michaelkihn8311 yip that sounds about right… I personally don’t neg shim more than .25 if at all… but then I have nearly all the skinny rears now and don’t really need to shim currently 😅 You just need to be careful not to over shim and push the designs more than they were intended to do… some funky things can happen at high speed! 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter Including the idea of "shimming out the gaps btw. sizes", which skinny should I add to my 45 in order to have a good stab-quiver for my 1160? 35 or 30?
@ what fuse and main use scenario? I’m not a big fan of large gaps between sizes, so with that said, I’d go either 35 or 40 but it really depends on use and fuse.
@@downwind_drifter I got an Ultrashort and Sillyshort Advance+, main usage will be cruising around with a wing or parawing and again and again heading downwind!
@ I’d suggest the 40 or 35 If you have the 40 and 45 you can expand in both directions with shims rather than needing to fill a gap in your quiver, this option would be tempting for me. Otherwise I’d say 35 and 45 would be ok too, but I wonder if you’d miss having a 40. I can’t imagine using the sillyshort with the fireball. My guess is you’ll settle on the ultrashort as your go to fuse. Dylan Bez uses the sillyshort with the 25 and 30 but he is a freak… it would not be for those of us with normal reflexes. Tough choice 🤙🤙
Do you extract/access the data reflecting your kmh directly from the gopro and theough the gopro app?
@@michaelkihn8311 yip I also track with the water speed app via my watch 🤙🤙
telemetryoverlay will export a transparent video of whatever telemetry you want. You can mix sources. It will export with the audio which makes it easy to sync in Davinci Resolve
@@dlsspy telemetryoverlay can be exported from the gopro footage? Never seen that!!
@ it’s going to take me some time to digest that! I appreciate the beta 🤙🤙
@@michaelkihn8311 it can extract the telemetry from GoPro directly and will automatically. Then you can add data from other sources like Apple Health.
@17min24 When you say "pretty cool to be overpowered on a 996cm2 foil", - trying to figure that out 🤭.. were you saying that because of being surprised by how much lift so little surface area creates? Or couldn't you believe to be riding the this right choice of foil for those conditions in full control and confidence? Or anything else what you are refering to? 🏄♂️🏄♂️🙋🏻♂️
@@michaelkihn8311 Nothing much to be taken from it. I feel like 1000cm2 is a nice benchmark being such a nice round number… in my mind, foils are starting to look small at 1000cm. It seemed interesting that this size was hitting its limits in these conditions and that I can fathom going much smaller in size. I have used the 1000fireball which is sub 800cm I think and that really is going to another level! It starts getting quite hard to get it fired up! I used it on a paddle downwinder and had success but it was a knife edge balance on whether I’d have success with it. I realised after that I had never even winged a foil that small before. The smallest foil I’ve used that wasn’t just a test, was the art 799 for towing 2-3 times overhead waves in raglan New Zealand. 🤙🤙
Nice scribbles, indeed. 👍🏻May I ask what program(s) you guys use for editing your footage?

I’m a new subscriber and i love your videos mate keep em up! I think your starting to go fully viral :)
Thanks welcome along 🤙🤙
I'm of a strong opinion that the super tiny stab craze that axis is pushing is a mistake and not a performance increase. Yes you will go faster on powered conditions downwinding - but there are so many other conditions where it reduces your glide and ability to accelerate from your own pumping input. Total surface area (amongst the same foil range) of front foil and rear stab usually determine It's speed for downwinding - but you can distribute that size more into the stab (smaller front foil bigger rear) which will give you a similar top speed but make the foil easier to paddle up, easier to accelerate, easier to dig yourself out of a mistake and overall ride more predictably. These tiny stabs Making people ride worse (style for surfing), paddle ups much harder and for very little benefit - if any. This idea I keep hearing from Dylan that you "learn to ride the front foil" and that being a rationale for a tiny stab is - frankly weird hahaha. End of Rant.
@@davewestfoils I’ll have to get back to this later when I have some time 😅 My initial thoughts reading through are that I see your point, especially for regular folks. Imo, at the upper end speeds the rear foil plays a huge role in pressure and glide, this all needs to suit each rider. This is a vid from 6months ago… a lot has been learned since this one 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter In no way directed at you my commentary. It's more audience considerations :)
as a bigger guy I agree, I use the biggest 55 skinny, going down to the 45 made it harder to turn, paddle up, pump with negligible difference in speed
@ I hear you, there is definitely a level of ease that comes with a bigger stab! I love the 50 for surfy riding at my 84kg the 45 works as my good allrounder and I grab the 40 for when I want to glide in modorite stuff or need to remove some lift when it’s big. I’m definitely not someone who uses one piece of kit in all conditions 😅 I’m lucky to have a solid quiver of choices and have spent a lot of time with each piece trailing and erroring. I know what I like now though and what works well for my style, if I can have my way… but it also needs to fit the conditions for me. That’s a big part of my fun! looking out and assessing the conditions and what I’m likely to face and what I want to ride, which also depends on my mood or fatigue level… it’s real life out there, and the most important thing is coming home. Thanks for commenting and sharing the stoke 🤙🤙
@ To my original point - I think I’m on the more extreme end of foil sizes for my weight and therefore there is more consequence to smaller tails. I regularly ride the 770r and Its the 680r that I’ve had issues with. And in this circumstance not having enough tail surface area at 95kg means you have nothing to push off. So as you move down in foil sizes it will become more pronounced the affect of the tail on the front foils “ease of use.”
what a climb down to the beach..Nice to see another part of the process. great as always...

How does the 1180 compare to the PNG1300V2 (or even the PNG1300V1) in these type of conditions?
@@michaelkihn8311 my guess would be that it’s a mostly similar experience for someone experienced, with the 1180 travelling faster. For a beginner you’d likely need the 1300v2 for any hope of getting on foil 🤙🤙
@ 😎😎 The 1180 certainly turns better than the 1300V2, but is the 1180 indeed faster in velocity? And why do you think the 1300V2 would be EASIER to get up than the 1300V1 with its slightly better low end I believe?
@@michaelkihn8311 the 1180 will be an all around faster foil. The 1300v2 will be easier to paddle up that the 1180 for a beginner. My guess is that the 1300v2 is likely to be easier than the v1… the v1 potentially has more lift at a slower speed but it also has the bad habits to overcome.
What exact model of drone would you recommend for filming these adventures like you are doing? That drone follows you in a random and creative manner right?
@@michaelkihn8311 not sure to be honest. Any drone will likely do that cam film, the thing to check is what winds it can handle. This is far from an automated drone! My girlfriend is an excellent pilot who has built some impressive flying skills. You’re not likely to get anything good from something automated. It’s likely to sketchy being over water too with shifting winds and sea. 🤙😅🤙
@ Haha, but didn't you record some videos with an automated drone, being scared to not returning to shore before the drones battery is empty? Thise videos looked great as well!!

Hi. Nice video. Curious what foil your friend was using because he seemed to have more speed and better wave riding ability compared to the 1201? Do. you still use the 1201? Regards.
Yea, Sam is a beast! Thank you 🤙🤙 Looks like he’s using his code, I’m pretty sure he would have been on the 980s front foil, I think that’s all he had code wise. Sam is often using much smaller gear than me. Especially back when this video was taken. He can often turn a lot sharper than me because of it, and was faster. I don’t use the 1201 anymore as Ive found the 1250 fireball replaced it… especially in combination with the 1160. Be good 😎
Hey ! How would you compare the art pro to the fireball ?
Fireballs are a better foil for ease of use and just about everything else, size for size. I love them and now pretty much only use fireballs 🤙😅🤙
Nice man. Great run
@@aquilesmasdmd thanks for sharing the stoke 🤌🤌
I'd love to hear your thoughts on doing that run on the 1180 instead of the PNG proto you were on. You seemed to be foiling very slowly which is what you want for slow bumps like these. How much more would would you have to have done on the 1180 I wonder.
@@slappysurf water was too small for the 1180 for my 83kg I’d say another 4kts of wind speed would have made the 1180 viable. If you go back you can likely find me using the 1180 for this run in light conditions. I’ll take a Quick Look 🤙🤙

@@NielsvanderKaaij hmm, I didn’t notice! Now that you mention it, I think Matt might have forgotten his one and used mine for this run. It’s very sedate conditions! Very much leash optional 🤙🤙
Great to see a run in that type of conditions which many of us might have available to us as well! If YOU would have picked any of the now-available foils, which one would you have used? Are the fireballs too fast for that condition?
@@michaelkihn8311yea these conditions are often overlooked… I’d use maybe the 1300v2 for this run or perhaps even have tried some of the old pump and glides. The 1350 would have been the only fireball I’d have considered in that range, it likely would have worked too 🤙🤙
@ Great! So I am staring to understand the relationship btw. swell size and wing size a little more! The 1250 would be too small and fast right?
@ I think it’s too fast but it would be interesting to hear from someone who is very light! I wonder if being light slows it down 🧐 Each foil seems to have a speed range in which it operates efficiently in… if the bumps are slow and there’s nowhere to go, I want a foil that is optimal for those speeds.
When I read Proto PNG my heartbeat increases.
@@stkl23 have you tried the 1300v2? It’s very good! 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter My friend bought it for dock starting and light wind winging. I‘m still on the 1401. I might try the Fireball 1350 when it gets warmer over here.
@@stkl23 I initially thought the 1401 had more bottom end than the 1350. That was after my first run on the 1350 where I got skunked… now after dozens of sessions on the 1350fb, I’m thinking the bottom ends are at least very similar. The 1300v2 would be worth a play if you can borrow it from your friend 🤙🤙

I've ordered the same Board AXIS 8'6'' x 17'' @ 120L
@@ironphil62 she’s a beaut! Let me know how it goes 🤙🤙
Where did you order it from? How much do you weigh? I can't decide between the 8'4 - 110 L and the 8'6 - 120 L.
@@nice2care SURF FX Southport Gold Coast. Me was 95kg me know 86kg been OFF the Beer & Sugar since NYE as I had a sports injury 6 months ago went under the knife SO now I am on the fitness Program SO HOPPING the 8'6'' x 17''@ 120L will be good for me. Me going back to Maui June/July for Downwind Month 👍🍺🌊🏄🏼
G’day. Do you notice any significant drag difference between the 600 (crazy )and 700 (short) fuse? I mean the difference between say a 325 progressive and 40 skinny is extraordinarily noticeable. I find the crazy short 600 and 40 skinny a little too twitchy. I have a 700 on order and am keen to use my 40 skinny. Thanks for the vids, the stoke and the general all round good vibes. Cheers.
@@damien130970 I havn’t notice any drag differences but I’ll keep an open mind to it, thanks. Are your experiences referring to using the 1250? The 700 pairs very well with the 40 skinny! It gains a much softer overall feel as your inputs seem to get dispersed more evenly or not evenly… I find the 60 or 56 fuse has very little give and creates a very firm feel under foot. I would like to re explore some progressives and see if I can come up with a use for them! I’m sure they are still great if you’re not needing efficiency, like bigger waves or conditions or such. Thanks for sharing the stoke!🤙🤙
I’m using spitfire 1180 and 999 Art V2 when flagging out a wing. I find the 600 fuse with 40 skinny is a bit unstable with my very inefficient pump. Easy to miss a pump and it’s over. The progressive gives me a bit of grace while I learn a better pumping technique.
@ sounds like you’ll get what you’re after with the 700, you won’t likely notice drag 🤙🤙
I put up the Waterspeed info at the end of the run 🤙🤙
awesome ride

In terms of the North Horizon, do the foiltracks go completely through or are they interrupted around those additional middle inserts? I was also wondering if those middle inserts are located exactly where the rear bolts and washers of an Axis mast would need to find grip if the mast is positioned as far in front as possible (even further via those extra holes in the aluminum masts)?
I can’t remember but it doesn’t make any difference really, as the bolts never end up in that spot. The north tracks are good. You couldn’t have the bolt being used at the entry point, for the north or any other tracks that I know of. It’s a non issue though. Have you purchased a north?
Are the foiltracks in the Horizon placed sufficiently in front for finding the perfect mastposition with the advance+ fuses and fireball wings?
Yip The biggest 8’4 the mast is about 1/3 from the front The smaller 7’5 the mast is about 1/3 from the back. It all works as it should for the a+ 🤙🤙
So good. Love the lights 🌅❤🤙
What size would recommend in the new franks axis board for a 90kg rider with a 3-4 months experience? I’ve been riding a planing shape and have felt some corkyness, particularly in short period swells in our bay.
@@AlexBarker-m1z tough one… I’m 83kg and love the 110L I don’t feel much cork going to the 120L Two of my friends are mid 90’s kg and both enjoyed the 120L The Frank board is the most stable board I have felt 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifter thanks, it is indeed. What kind of level rider are your friends on the 120L? Sounds like I could run either but might grow into the 120L but have a bit more success on the 130L initially.
@ I’d recommend the 120 over the 130 for you. Friends are learners 🤙🤙
I thought we were going to get the paddle up from the drone for a sec there, then the paddle perspective :( Sam for sure should get a parawing! Also if you got a parawing you would only have to change your backpack so you could store your paddle on your back and you could still do the same kind of runs as deflate, just with a smaller backpack.
@@slappysurf Sam has a parawing they are not quite as reliable just yet for this sport of thing… I think they need a touch more bottom end. With a wing you can still create good pumping thrust and apparent wind. The drone has been playing up with recording… that was all the footage we got unfortunately! I used every second of what we had. I’ve purchased myself a parawing 🤙🤙
@ nice, I have a 4.2 and 3 m Flow arriving in 2 weeks myself
@@slappysurf it’s fun having something new to learn!
Great run, fantastic journey. Do you have the GP lens cap off most of the time? I only just realised it's waterproof without it . Haha, I've only had every version from gopro HD 1, lol . That's a good size foil at 1350 Seems nice and fast and a good option when you need to slow down in smaller . Hope. You and Alison are both well. Have a great weekend 😊
@@christomo we keep replacing the lens’s but they rust and corrupt so fast… I take it off when I see it fogging up as there is no other remedy on the water by that stage. The 1350 is great for low end stuff, it surfs very well for its size! We are well thanks, about to do some more travels!! 🤙🤙
@downwind_drifter just so you know the lens is covered by warranty and I've had at least 10 for free from gopro just went on customer service used live chat it's very slow so I do it while editing. also I use wd40 to clean rusty parts and clean up fine . Just if you did not know of the service it's been very good in UK
@ excellent beta thank you!

Should we wing out to Tiritiri tomorrow and deflate? Tiritiri always delivers!
@@SamKynmanCole I mean maybe… Or we can fill the day with normal downwinders 🤌
Don't miss the drone footage at the end! 🤙🤙
Beau-ti-ful! Props to the drone crew!:) Some things are much more visible from above...like the crazy amounts of seaweed you guys get for example. Looks like Matt is going almost as fast as you are on the 1350...how much is the weight difference between the two of you roughly? Would you say the 1250 has m u c h better top end or do you mostly gain more manouverability with it compared to 1350? I am 85 kg and for me 1401 and 1201 were pretty close speed-wise last year...but 1201 much more turny of course...
Thank you Ha! I didn’t even see that much seaweed! Matt might be traveling as fast as me, he’s about 10kg heavier. I’d say, 1250 feels like it has much more top end than the 1350. For me the 1350 is a 16-20kph foil, 1250 is more like 18-24kph That’s a lose idea ^ about the comfort zone. Fireballs turn great compared to the artpros and are much more user friendly! They are much easier to use. The fireballs have basically replaced the artpros for linking bumps. 🤙🤙
@@downwind_drifterDo you always measure in kph in terms of wind? Or is that 16-20knots for the 1350 instead of kph? 🏄♂️🏄♂️🙋🏻♂️
@@michaelkihn8311 I always measure the wind with knots and speed with kph. That’s foiling speed that I’m mentioning above not wind speeds. 🤙🤙
@ Great! And what would be approximate windspeeds to make you pick 1350 above 1250 and 1160? This video's run could have worked out on the 1160 you think?
For sure I could have used the 1160. It’s tricky though as this run is varied throughout and I feel like the 1250 easily covered all the parts. The 1160 might have been a bit soft towards the end. And maybe even the start. It just would have ment I’d have to work a bit harder in those parts. Wind speeds… it’s a bit tricky as there are so many factors that go in to my selection process. 1350 Onshore ocean 12kts-15kts ish Bay 15kts -17kts ish 1250 Ocean 15-18kts ish Bay 17-25kts ish 1160 Ocean 18kts+ Bay 25kts + 1070 ocean 18kts+ as well Bay, likely never as to fast and soft for me. Bay runs = under 20km fetch ish for an idea 🤙🤙
