The drone videography was amazing…props to Alison!! I don’t know what’s more impressive, the number of videos you’re able to put out or the amount of time you’re spending in the water to make them. Either way, keep them coming!! I learned something new every video. 🤙
Yea, I can see I was too far back on the board, for at least those starting attempts. I was hoping to get a chip in from the reef to try it out but they ended up being a bit to steep.. I'm better off at the moment in the bumps! Thanks for the message!
Amazing drone footage, Alison deserves some cocktails. I learn every run i watch and appreciate you postiing these . My 7.10 x33 140l starboard arived let the pain begin . Have a great week 😊
@downwind_drifter yes 23 wide haha typo. Just hope I can use the1600cm2 115cm wide 8.5 ar front wing to start mind I'm continuing to upwind down wind with wing until I get better at the pump and glide and practice sup foil .
Picking up lots of tips from your vids. Keep them coming, really appreciate them. Would be great if you could add wind speed and sea state to your start info 🤙
@@Samlsb80 I often mention extra bits in the description but I think you’re right, I could add it to the start screen data. Great idea! Thanks for sharing the Stoke 🤙🤙
Something else I find interesting to share: I realized most (if not all) reviews are done by seventy something kg riders. I'm 93kg and, for example, a 1900 cm2 front wing will be perfect in small to medium conditions. Same reason a 350 passenger plane with a much bigger wing can accelerate the same as an 80 passenger one with a much smaller wing. The weight that you put on top of the wing is a fundamental variable, not always considered.
Again, agreed. I’m 83ish kg at the moment and a friend of mine is 93ish. We share a lot of beta and runs and it is obvious how much weight effects us. Eg, I might be best suited to the 1201 on a particular run we have in mind and he is nearly always best on the 1401… sometimes he pulls off the 1201 too though when I do! Major respect to the heavier guys out there making it work. I have tested some foils recently that, if they make it to market, will be a load of fun for heavier guys! 🤙🤙
Absolutely, I have a heap of conversations with people that start like this - you should use smaller gear, Im on a (insert something here it could be a front wing, a hand wing whatever) and you should be too. So my response is - How much do you weigh? The response is (somewhere between 60 and 80kg). So I go - Ok well I weigh 103kg so physics says I probably need to be on a bigger set of gear. But still they tell me Im wrong, so now I just smile and say - Ok sure
Great stuff, thanks for making these videos! I think you looked markedly faster on this foil, overtaking the bumps and less weaving (and thus making the run less fun?) Drone work is exceptional!!
@@grendel95 it was less surfy for me… and in these conditions I didn’t gain much from the step down. That’s not to say it wouldnt be a great setup in more suiting conditions, but I’ve been trying the 1100 occasionally for a long time now and I’ve never quite got along with it in dw scenarios. I feel it looses a lot of bottom end to the 1180 and does give much in return. Another plus one for the drone pilot! 🤙🤙
It seems that a bigger/longer board could have help to get up on foil in the bigger swell; easier to accelerate. As then when you were up, even in the smallest bumps you'd manage to remain foiling. Great video as always
@@marcoscasanueva I agree, I find this board a touch small. I’ve been using another board behind the scenes that is so far perfect! I can’t wait to show it 🤙🤙
Good video! It's unusual to watch you struggle (I thought it was only us mortals that did that). Anyhow, practicing struggle sometimes is all there is. My Spitfire's (1000) speed was improved with a shim. The 1180 doesn't backstall as easy as the 1000 did. Always learning something from your terrific videos though!
@@drbfitk366 thanks for the great message! I havnt seen a 1000 spitfire? I still have bad sessions, all it takes is a bit of fatigue or stress as far as myself. Changing gear or getting mast placement wrong can play into it too. Then there is the environment… currents can wreak havoc with foil boards and cross chops and such, dirty water. There’s so many things at play 🤙🤙
I don’t know what I was thinking (I wasn’t 😬). I meant the 1100 Spitfire. I found it particularly pone to backstalling if I wasn’t upto decent speed on backside of wave. The 1180’s slower stall speed much more forgiving!
I had the same experience last week. My friends were on foils in the 1400-1600 range, and I attempted it with an 1180 and had less fun than they did by a wide margin
@@carldelica3794 it’s a tricky game! You can get away with it sometimes… but then the eventual underfoiled run comes along. I did a run today that ended up an underfoiled run, but more because of my board being a bit smaller than usual. Definitely into going smaller and smaller, but it's been in the interest of proving hand paddles don't need bigger foils! Mostly on the Fireball 1000 now, with Skinny 30, which is super easy to get started in any bumps. But I upsize to 1070 and Skinny 40 if it's super light or doing a run in Botany Bay.
@@jordangilbert7757 wow, that’s legit. I used the 1070 today in 25odd kts pair with the 50skinny to help me deal with the takeoffs. I was on a smaller than usual board which is throwing me a bit… and also a longer mast.

@ yea, I used the 25 a bit. I found it added performance in areas where I wasn’t really looking for it. I’ll re visit it when I’m pushing for speed, for now I like a bit more feel from the system. I imagine wingers will love it! I’m currently cycling through 40-45-50 trying to find my personal sweet spots and align my front foils to rear foils… it’s very circular for me. @@downwind_drifter looks tricky on the inside of that reef, interesting how it takes the energy out of the bumps Came to add to this Fireball thread, I found that by far the most interesting foil of Axis. The speed is incredible, but what I found interesting was the effortless feeling to keep that speed. It all clicked. The paddle up is about the same as the 1121 on the 1070 for me, but requires more finesse and softer feet, but very comparable in terms of technicality, the 1070 felt much easier to just glide through flat spots, and the warning before stall is much better. Downside is it is less stable in the water and benefits from longer board, but so worthwhile. On the 40 tail. In short, this explained to me why/how the Code/AFS/Armstrong DW foils were on 650-750cm2, and on Axis everyone has been on minimum 1088cm2 on the 1121, almost double! It was the lack of 13+AR foil.
