    This was an awesome run. It was great to watch the breach halfway through, which was an epic recovery. That fireball looks amazing a local rider has one I'm dying to try it .
    Beautiful part of Aukland the drone is stunning .
    I personally love these long ones when I have the time to just kick back and learn from a top ripper .
    How did you not loose you hat and shokz when it came off .I think I will teather my shokz to my wetsuit
    Take it easy bro good winds 😊
    Ps I Left you a download on FB of a paddlemount I use with a mouth mount not sure if it will be of use but sent anyway

      It's a great run, I had only done it in reverse before... I re did it just yesterday with twice the wind and it was all time conditions! I then did another run on the other side of the peninsula and it was so severe, almost too severe! it was 35-45kts and towards the end of the run quite a confused sea state... It seems when you get towards the 40kt mark you definitely need this to go well or else you could be in some real trouble.
      A friend of mine who's learning was getting ushered to do the run by a semi pro/brand ambassador as his first ever 20km downwind run... 10km being his current personal longest in far more mild conditions. that could have ended very badly.
      People truly need to take care out there, it's no joke. being on foil can give you an amazing sense of mastery but if for some reason you can;'t get on foil (and there are so many!) you are now a swimmer! Id be interested how far the average water goer these days can swim against 20kts let alone 40kts...
      I think I need to do a full safety video...
      Thanks Mate

      I got a bit carried away with that reply but in the wrong direction...
      There will be some more long vids up soon, you are very kind!
      I tether my shokz to my glasses using a hitch knot on the back of the floaty band and then thread them through my hat on the back... it makes it one package, easy to find and floaty.
      The fireballs breach and recover very well, its easier to manage than it used to be... the hardest part is not frightening myself off.

      @christomo 21 день назад +2

      @downwind_drifter floaty band? enlighten me . Thanks, mate . I'm a shite swimmer, so baby steps and backup plans , backup floatation, and won't be going alone . Keep looking at parawing as a back up as well mind I would need to make one due to cost 🤔

    How would your Spitfire 1180 have handled that run?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  16 дней назад +2

      Interesting question.
      I think the run would have been harder and a lot less fun. I would have gotten to sustainable riding later in the run, the middle where it was good would have been less fun (but still good) and the end would have been really tough with the crossed up conditions.
      The correct foil for me this day would have been 1 size up in the fireball range.
      The largest fireball to come turns like the 1180

    I'm thinking about using a 2 meter wing (it's light weight and about 7.5 feet long to start a downwinder. I'm thinking about deflating and stowing it in a backpack without stopping. I don't need to go upwind with it. I'm looking at using it to start a downwinder rather than using a paddle or parawing. Do you think it's doable? Love the videos and commentary. I subscribed a long time ago. By the way I spent 2 weeks in Fiji. Awesome place. Aloha, Don

      I couldn’t say sorry, about the wing. I can’t visualise it. It sounds like it should be ok.
      I am so stoked I put in the time and learned with the paddle, I recommend it if you are able. It is a great tool and gives a lot of satisfaction.
      I appreciate the message and interested to hear more about the wing you’re thinking about.

    It sounds a bit like the two biggest fireball sizes would be just right for heavier guys that were mainly on the 1401 and the 1201?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  21 день назад +4

      Oh yes, but they have so much range to the foil, that us medium guys are getting quiver killers! once they are released Ill get a bit more in depth. For no they are excellent and exactly what ive been wanting.

    Hi. Tnx for another nice vid. How does the narrow 17’ axis compare in stability to your other board(s) in the quiver. Tnx Ad.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  21 день назад +3

      It's more stable than the rounded hulls I've been using to date, KT, North horizon, Axis proto. Hard to believe. I'm not yet sure if its a beginner board, I'll get my girlfriend on it to see what she thinks but so far everyone who has tried it has put in an order for one ~5 guys all with mixed levels of experience.

    How does one "cut down" a mast? 🧐🤪 760mm instead of 800mm, - easier to paddle up or what's the reason for not riding 800mm?

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  21 день назад +3

      @@michaelkihn8311 yea 76cm is much easier for me to paddle up than the 80 and I like the feel of connection to the foil and the angles it uses.
      Cut the mast to 76cm, re drill the screw holes and cast a new fuse mount around it… simple! 😉
      ^ but not for me… I got someone to do it for me 😎

      @downwind_drifter  20 дней назад +2

      Imagine cutting the fuse connection off and then having to build up and create another fuse connection, around the raw mast that has been cut. No joins.

    • @AndyCaska
      @AndyCaska 20 дней назад

      No a chance I’d do this - 800mm is a perfect length for DW, especially if you go fast and wild conditions. Never had any issue padding it up.

    • @downwind_drifter
      @downwind_drifter  20 дней назад

      @@AndyCaska yea it’s not for everyone.
      I love the 72cm too but sometimes it’s a bit short for the surfing aspect or in bigger bumps as you suggest.
      I have found the 76cm to be a great in between for me. Much easier than the 80cm to paddle up and better feel for me too, also stiffer.
      I think I’d only go for the 80cm now for security in bigger bumps, less chance of breaching when you bomb down those straight steeper faces!
