Jake & BBD are trying to figure out if the Houston Astros are this year's version of the 2023 St. Louis Cardinals. They need to get hot SOON because the history of this kind of start to a season is not promising.

You were looking a lot at past seasons to see if there have been teams that have struggled like Houston and made the playoffs anyways. In the History of the MLB, no team has started a season 7-16 and made the playoffs. Make of that what you will.
No team had ever lost all 4 home games of a playoff series until the 2019 Astros. And then they did it again in 2023
Adolis García broke the Astros
@@generallukeproductionsImagine losing 8 straight Silver Boot Series to your Daddy.
@@kenan5646The Astros will be the first.
All this history did was affirm that 19-31 is an underappreciated mountain that the 2019 Nats toppled
Astros losing Dusty has has a clubhouse effect like St Louis losing Yadi is my very professional opinion.
I'd say losing Martin Maldonado for the pitchers is the bigger effect here. Since pitching has been trash.
Great use of the word “empirical.” You actually nailed it.
2019 Nationals were 12-14 on April 28th
Weren’t they about 500 in July too?
The worst thing Houston can do is play .500 ball and be buyers at the deadline.
Their farm is DEPLETED. They don't have a guarantee that most of their pitching injuries don't hinder them (long-term) once they come back. Abreu is a bad contract. They need to trade Tucker and Bregman to replenish the farm. Probably Hunter Brown, too. Altuve is an Astro for life. Alvarez is a player that needs to be a cornerstone of their future. Jeremy Peña may turn out to be their guy afterall. Martin Maldonado being gone HURTS their entire pitching staff. They need an Austin Hedges-type catcher to bring that staff up to a higher potential.
The Astros don't have the depth to handle all the injuries they have.
Biggest concern is the lack of managerial experience they have. I feel that is going to be a problem. It didn't surprise me after the AJ Hench situation, that they turned to Dusty Baker. And while Astros fans supposedly blamed Dusty for a lot, there is no way they go to the ALCS last year with the injury issues they had without him. Managers and their experience MATTER.
As a Houston fan, watching these games has been infuriating. We are 15th in runs batted in, 1st in Hits and like 3rd in the AL in OPS. That alone should have us at or closer to 500. The pitching has been horrid and watching us have a MLB leading blown saves is just a testament to that. Sure we found a gem in Ronel Blanco and Monteros resurgence has been great. But that’s literally it. You like to believe it can’t get worse pitching wise but I also saw us lose 4 home games in 19 WS And then do it all over again last ALCS.
Isn’t it comforting though that if you’re hitting that much & getting on base that much the results will even out at some point?
Frustrating for sure but just one of those shut out the noise, keep your heads down, and before you know it the record will be where it should.
The pitching can’t stay this bad
One of the biggest comparisons between the 2022 Cards and '23 Astros, losing their veteran leadership catcher! Cardinals clubhouse was lost without Yadi. The Astros losing both Maldy and Dusty in the same off-season may be having a bigger effect than anyone wanted to believe.
As a Mariners fan I saw close up how big an impact Maldy had on their game, him leaving can't be overlooked for what it means for their team identity.
Apples and bowling balls imo
You mean 23 Cards and 24 Astros
Jake can you do the markings of the different things youre gonna talk about like talkin baseball?
We’re for sure in trouble down here in Houston, Jake.
We’ve had bad starts before, but this is different. The offense is sluggish and very inconsistent. Leaving runners stranded.
Of course and injured starting rotation and depleted bullpen is another reason, but I feel like we’re still going to struggle even at full health.
Feels different this time.
I believe this is the cost of the Texans drafting CJ Stroud and the team actually being good for once 😂😢😞
Also rockets improving
@@jonathanfrimerman8855 yeah, did better than expected. Jalen Green finally clicked there in the final stretch. Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore looks great too.
Astros have the same problem they had last year starting pitching.
For standings, I like looking at a graph of how teams performed over time, you can plainly see when they collapse or when they turn things around. Would recommend a Google for division race chart.
like the mets lol
Espada ( nice person) doesn't have the experience to know how to encourage and uplift the team. He continues to play Abreu and just can't select the right reliever for the situation
Yes, I’m a Twins fan who expected this, but as one who wants to keep up hope on the season… as of today, the Twins are one of 3 teams who have not yet played a single team with a record below .500. I know a horrid start against above .500 teams doesn’t bode well for success in general, but 27 teams have had at least one or two series against sub .500 teams where the Twins have been against all .500 or better teams
Good point
Watching the Astros is my therapy, now it’s just makeing me depressed……..
Houston started 15-31 in 05 they made the World Series so it’s not impossible but their pitching is killing them and clutch hitting hasn’t been there
Jake, making any parlay bet is over extending yourself. They are statistically unfair bets the casino wants you to make. If you consistently make parlay bets you will deplete your capital. You won't make money in the long run.
Yep. Talk to any professional gambler. Parlays are sucker bets
Houston has too many stars to be this damn bad. I expected 1 of the "big three" in the bullpen to have a down year, but for all 3 of them to suck this much at the same time is atrocious. Not to mention Bregman, Abreu, Meyers doing jack shit at the plated. All of the starting pitching is dead and on the IL, and the kids they have are absolutely shitting the bed.
Pirates were 22-8 last year...Yikes!
That Canucks game was absolutely amazing. One of the loudest arenas i had ever heard
April 17th really fucked me up
It’s certainly not looking good for the Astros, but being a huge Nats fan I’ll just say. It’s easy to forget we were 19-32 before turning it around to be the hottest team in the league en route to a World Series championship.
Gambling IS AN ADDICTION. It ruins lives and what’s more, it infiltrates the game. That’s what a lot of you guys in digital media don’t seem to stop and think. It WILL ruin the game we all love the more it’s accepted and integrated into the game. Games will be thrown, officials and umpires will be bought off, games will be ruined. It’s only a matter of time if not already taking place. Take a look at some of this awful umpiring and ask yourself if you think it’s simply just because that particular umpire is just not that good at calling games. You used to be able to say that. Now you have to wonder. I know that sponsors pay the bills but you need to know you’re contributing to the integrity of the game being ruined by association.
Exactly. It’s sickening that people fail to realize that if people bet for fun they will only need to bet more to feel that fun. Annoying but whatever
Bro your naive, these things are already rigged.. Plenty of evidence on the net.. And most these talking heads know... Look in to it..
Both LA teams winning in 2020.. 😂😂
While I understand the sentiment about game rigging this feels like a tremendous stretch. Normalizing sports betting in general does not affect the illegality of match fixing. Sports betting has always existed so to say that only now since bookies are advertising in the game means that the umps are committing fraud seems arbitrary.
As for the addiction does that mean anything addictive should not be advertised or involved in sports? So no alcohol ads either because alcoholism is an addiction.
It’s insane that something as destructive as gambling is now promoted globally but whatever we live in weird times.
The best headline I’ve seen in a while
I suppose it's time for the next five-year tank plan.
But who are this years Pirates, is my question.
Starting Rotation on the DL
Framber Valdez, Luis Garcia, Lance McCullers, Jose Urquidy
Cristian Javier
CLEARLY the Astros are tanking for the next Holliday brother
I know this isn’t the topic of the video but saying Texas came out of nowhere last year is crazy after being in first place w the best offense in the AL the entire season
came out of nowhere bc they had been god-awful the previous years. their record in 2022 was 68-94, just 8 games ahead of the A’s. no one thought they’d do what they did in 2023. do you guys just have really selective memories, or something?
@@ayydubs987no, they just started being rangers fan.
Im chalking it up to Dusty, Maldy and poor luck that has resulted in a shot in morale. Dont think theyll finish below the A's but they have a chace to be behind the Angels at this point
If every single Texas Rangers pictcher is healthy, which is kind of a longshot but if they are, they have the best pitching staff and all the major league baseball and it’s not even close. Astros are going to definitely make a run when they get healthy and I don’t know if anybody can beat the Braves man if they’re playing well at the end they’re gonna be really hard to beat and don’t forget about the Yankees.
Twins have 7 games with the White Sox in the next 10 games. That either gets them back in the race or sets off alarms if they lose.
Jake say it ain’t so
It’s April. The Astros have 140ish games left to play as does every single team in the MLB. How good or bad a team is doing in April means nothing.
It does mean something. These games are totaled in the final tally. Do the games seem less important? Of course, every month during the season seems less important than the next.
Hunter Brown has been flat terrible, Astros bullpen has failed repeatedly in high-leverage situations. I'm getting the feeling they might have some team chemistry issues that Dusty was able to smooth over better than Espada can.
Two world series and four pennants the last ten years. 0 and 0 for the Yankees. So I'll take that all day long if the Astros are terrible this year and they can't beat the Yankees AGAIN in the playoffs. New York will just lose to someone else.
feeling out about dodgers is funny. basically a whole new team still working itself up to the beast they can be and figuring things out. not to mention they’re had almost exact same starts that past years and end up with 100-90 wins. last year 12-11 ended 100-62. from freddie slump to bottom of the lineup batting .100 to pitchers getting lit up and having a bottom bullpen in the league and yet still 1st in the division and over .500 record 😂😂😂imagine when the dodgers start playing like they did sunday ? i promise you you don’t WANT to see that as an opponent lol just wait though i get it. dodgers are the hottest thing to bring up and headlines will draw crowds it just doesn’t make you look very smart or atleast embarrass yourself
Love to see it
So Dusty was the problem huh? 😆
15-8
Houston was able to make the playoffs starting off 15-30, so that is the mark where i would say they are truly dead lol
And the World Series if I’m not mistaken
excellent day then
Nats Park was rocking this weekend
bro astros will be fine the second they release abreu,,,, but why they still havent did it, is very confusing
Because he's so expensive
@@brendangilmartin4002Honestly it's more embarrassing to keep sending him out there rather than just cutting losses and giving him an early retirement. Astros have a terrible front office now, the first thing they can do to show they are actually trying is to cut out Abreu.
@@schlootle i mean 40 million is a big loss just saying
these twins takes aged poorly
I think it is time to consider thinking these so-called Houston Astro pitchers are potentially thrown these game maybe for gambling.
Took a series from the dodgers in LA! LGM
MLB was like “Huh? Ippei? Who’s that? Ohtani has a white interpreter”
the channel "Baseball Doesn't Exist" put out a GREAT 30 minute video about the situation of Sports Gambling and Pro level sports in the US and other countries. First 10-15 just is a full recap of Shoei and Ieepi
First comment! Jake sucks lol
