  • I have been receiving requests to do a video on Crankbait design and theory for a while. Be carful what you ask for. In this video I go into what makes a crankbait work and how you can incorporate the theory into designing lures and even selecting one off the shelf. #makinglures #makingcrankbaits

    OMG. That one 9 minute tutorial contained more usable information anything I've read or seen. Roll is no longer a mystery. And being able to adjust it is no longer a mystery. I'm feeling that by the end of the series I'll be able to design and tune a lure to do exactly what I want and leave less to hapinstance. And I haven't even seen the rest! Thank you.

      I’ll attest. Listen to this guy. I started making cranks back in the golden age before even Tackle Underground was a thing. lol 90-91 to date myself. Got really lucky on some but had all sorts of misconceptions. This guy is explaining things that I invested years of trial and error into figuring out. He will save you a lot of the disappointment of experiencing the error part of that equation. Making a functional crank bait isn’t all that difficult really. Knowing what changes to make to fix one that doesn’t work or to make one better… that’s the tricky part.

    Looking forward to this series. I'm a graduate of Greg Vinall's Crankbait Masterclass. Greg is an Aussie lure maker that dispels a lot of myths about how crankbaits work. There is a lot of misinformation out there about bib design, bib angle, what causes lures to dive deeper, tow point location etc. There is quite a science behind it as I'm sure you are well aware Franko. In particular, I hear a lot of folks say that to make a lure dive deeper, just change the bib angle. This is simply only one small part of deeper diving lures. In fact it is not the cause of a lure diving deeper, but rather it is required to prevent a deep diving lure from becoming unstable.
    Anyway, as I said, I'm looking forward to this. I think you'll open up a lot of eyes and turn many light bulbs on!

    Thanks for this one. lol I waste a lot of time in lure building groups wondering if the people answering ever even watch the lures in the water. Especially when it’s questions about line tie and weight placement. Some of it is so counter intuitive and a lot of people say what they think should happen when it’s not at all what happens. When I first started, I was moving the line tie down trying to get less roll and a tight wiggle because that’s what I was told and what made sense intuitively. Something wasn’t right, so I made a serious of lures to experiment with and they did the exact opposite of what I wanted. 30 years later and I catch myself trying to correct people on the internet with the same misconceptions I had.

    Thank you very much Franco for clearing some things up for me! As an HVAC tech, I have some understanding of physics and fluid flow but for the life of me, I could not understand how a streamlined lure, equal on all sides and being pulled in a straight line would do anything but go in a straight line, like pulling on a rope. Your engineering mind has explained it clearly to me. I really like your blend of art and science. Two questions for you. Would you consider doing video's on making metal (copper) fishing spoons? And number 2, have you ever considered using silver solder to secure the internal wiring harness together? It's pretty easy once you master the technique.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  Год назад +1

      Yes...actually a got really into using silver solder a few years back...super handy. I don't like using it on the wire and hooks since the heating tends to anneal it. But I'm sure there's a technique to re-temper.

    I love the applied engineering in all your content. This series is going to be very popular! The (why it does this) explanations I believe, really push your channel over and above other lure builders. There are a bunch of very talented lure builders here on RUclips turning out extremely nice lures. Most how ever fall short when it comes to (why it does this) answers. I have come to understand many lure properties and design elements through your channel, as I'm sure many other viewers also have. Looking forward to next installment. I am interested in recreating a lure I bought as a 11 or 12 year old so 1971 or 72. Brand/name was not of the big 4 names of the day. My Father was Game Warden in Lee Co.Ia, at that time one of his monthly duties was going to every little bait shop, gas station, store and tavern that sold fishing licenses in the whole county. He hated it, I loved it! In some dark tavern I found this magic to me lure. Have not seen any lure before or after being any where close to it's design. Profile from the side looked like 2.5/3.inch spoon with fat end forward, with a short but wide bib set at 20-30 degrees. Top down view was close to profile of a Storm Thin Fin. So Shad like. Top or back the center was convex Shad shape with a tiny lip or step around the edge facing up. confused with my description? I'm trying not too. Single molded in large hook. In short, backward plastic spoon with short wide wake bait bib. on retrieve gave a wide nose to tail wobble. Kinda walkin the dog like. stop it sank super slow with slight flutter. Could not be retrieved fast at all. Not stable at any more than a crawl. Did a real nice dying Shad or panfish imitation. Caught Bass small and large mouth, White Bass, Jumbo Crappies, Catfish and a few chunky fresh water Drum. Lure became a lasting display for asst, birds and other tree dwellers in a Oak Dad said no way he was cutting down, for my damn lure. OK (why and how did it do all that?)! One last thing, I'd like to send some really nice Stainless blades, prop ,chopper, chatter assortment to play with. Bought in bulk, way more than I can use. Drop massage to kahlconnie72@gmail.com with a P.O. box or what ever you use. I'll hook you up with cool tinkering parts. Would enjoy seeing engineering mind putting them to use! Huge Fan! One of the most interesting and difficult parts of lure design has always been the lip/bib. The engineer in me wants to have equations for dive lip behavior. Due to the complexity, I doubt one will ever come about, but it is an interesting thought. Thanks for shedding more light on the subject though. I have never given too much thought to roll.

    I hope you give some information about suspending lures. I can speak for my experience bass fishing bass predator actions to attack, kill and eating their prey is a God given to keep the healthy strong. That said, the stopping hesitation with a fluttering hurting bait creates the attack faster, more in terms multiple fish numbers. One larger fish seem to be after the weaker, it’s easy lunches, the feeders join in for easy prey. Hope I making my views clear for suspending baits, and not to wordy ! RLF

    Excellent video! The crankbaits that I find most fascinating are baits that hunt for center. I am primarily a musky fisherman and trolling baits that hunt for center are crucial to triggering these finicky creatures. Headlocks and matlocks by supernatural big baits, the Phantom hex, and the storm hot-n-tot are phenomenal at hunting. I believe this characteristic is due to the line tie being able to move freely in the aluminum diving lip. If you could possibly elaborate on what causes "hunting" in certain baits. I think would be helpful for people who are trying to understand what is happening with these types of lures. Thanks, love your videos!

    I'm sure you have covered this in a video somewhere.... but what material or materials do you or can make lure lips from and where exactly do buy it? From the brief searching I've done there doesn't seem to be a product specifically designed for this application...

      There are products...but I have not done a video. I will soon.

    There is a limit on length of lip when it comes to lip width where the cranks action fails and it stalls on one side or the other correct?

      What I have seen is instability with excessively long lips....good question, though.

    Hi Franco!
    Love your videos, but i just have one question. If one would want to make a lure that both rolls and wiggles, so that it looks a bit ”crazy” and is just wiggling like a madman, how would that work? Is it mostly weight placement or can a lip be made to serve this purpose? Thanks in advance!

      A wide and short bib will add roll and placing the tie eye close to the bib will Exaggerate the wiggle. Good luck.
