Just an opinion, but I think xGen fur would have looked better combined with Arnold. Also, in terms of photorealism, the seams should have a much smoother bevel transitioning into the fur of the ball as it is a very thin layer pasted on top of the fur and rubber. Great tutorial, watched for the keyshot demo, it looks like a more robust version of marmoset toolbag.
Hey Mike! I'm using Maya 2016, and at 4:22 when I try to do the shift double click it either selects the entire ball or selects the wrong row. Is this a problem with my settings or do you think it would just be Maya 2016? I did the rest of the tutorial with paint select, but as a student I imagine being efficient is the most important skill in this line of work

Fernando, typically if a loop you have selected does not "light up" all the way round then something has been deleted ( and edge or so ) is that the case ?

@@rajneeshelectroaxz9293 I found something by a bit of an accident. after making the Sculpt deformer try scaling it up. Apparently it's a NURBS sphere. I think that his settings may already be dialed in and that changing the settings could yield the same result but scaling up the deformer seemed to work for me. Also after doing some research, it is also possible to use other objects as the deformer and depending on what you do with them you will get different results. I'd check out the AutoDesk website for more information on it.
I'm having a problem with texturing. Let's say I'm about to make a texture. I right click>assign new material> lambert. Then I click on the yellow folder, but when I do it deselects my polygon primitive, I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that or not. So then I choose my image from file, which in this case is a jpg. of a brick texture, but it doesn't appear to apply to my lambert because it isn't showing up on the object. The material is applied to the object, but the brick pattern isn't there.
I'm wondering what your sculpt options are set as because once I get to that part it does nothing, even after starting again and following the tutorial. (Maya 2017)
Hey just to let you know I fixed the problem this morning, although I'm still not sure why it was happening. Basically after trial in error in two versions ('16 & '17) I just messed about. I skipped the step at 1:20 where you scaled the vertexes and now I have a perfect tennis ball. I'm still a novice so I'm not aware as to why this was causing the problem. Hello I was trying to follow along but I could also not find the "sculpt" function under 'deform'. I've actually spent a good 10 minutes looking and I found 'sculpting tools' under mesh tools but that does not give me the same results that you got in the video. Any help :/ ?
It didn't work. I did tons of research and it just seems that particular option just isn't available on the 2016 version. I tried the 2017 trial version and was able to follow the model tutorial, great work!

Mike wouldn't you say that you don't need that many triangles for this? I think you could've done this with much less triangles, especially if you want it in a game. :p
in the first few min you selected and resized the vetrices of the smooth face and both sides got reshaped in the front view. This didn't happen when I did it. My shape isn't even in both sides
Not big fan of you are doing every texture in keyshot, not everyone has software and you can also do that in maya.. But I understand its easier for you

Same problem. Sculpt deformer does nothing. I solved this problem in the beggining by choosing not Linear smooth, but Exponential and number of divisions 2. After that you don't need sculpt deformer at all.
I found the solution! :) Actually Sculpt Deformer works, you should turn on Transperancy and you will see sculpt deformer's gizmo inside the tennis ball. Just scale it out to ball's size.

You could use a flat texture created in for example Photoshop but I personally would use XGen in Maya to create "short green hair"

Harry, instancing with XGEN would actually be pretty easy ( I have done tutorials on how to use XGEN ) But getting it just right is tricky

When that is all said and done hit 5 on you keyboard to activate "view texture"
