      Answer to your question: 1667 Ohms is the maximum earth fault loop impedance in a circuit protected by a 30mA RCD, otherwise it won't trip. Though realistically, you should be measure a fraction of this value.

    With a TT system, the potential needed to trip the RCD should be at most 50V. Divide 50V by the RCD rating and you get a maximum impedance (rounded to the nearest ohm) of.
    1667 ohms for 30mA
    500 ohms for 100mA
    167 ohms for 300mA
    50 ohms for 1A

    Corey the magic number for a 100ma rcd is 500ohms . 1667 is for a 30ma rcd . You should pursue a sub 100 ohm reading for an earth rod . A stand alone genset requires 20ohms I believe from memory

In the new prosumers chapter 826.1.1.2.1 says "Any connection to the means of earthing derived from the public distribution network need not be disconnected". Of course there may be something else going on in this install that requires it - dunno what inverter you are using and whether it can switch it's own MEN link. Discuss!

    It's interesting, because we don't really 'import' a ground (earth) in Canada, we essentially always require a ground rod, but in modern code we also require at least two ground rods, spaced an appropriate length apart. Always fun to see the difference approaches.

      @@persona250 It's quite possible I do! I'm not an expert here. I do believe we would be considered TN-C-S as well, although with the caveat that we require a dedicated grounding rod on site (sometimes referred to an Multiple Earthing Neutral, I think).
      Anyways, my point was that we require a dedicated grounding rod (or multiple in newer installations) on every residential site. We don't 'import' a ground from the utility, or use a sudo ground of water pipes, etc.

    Hey Cory, I've been following for a very long time, I really like your videos, there's so much out there that I'd love to get involved in. I'm pretty close to Bournemouth, so if you ever need a hand/labour I'd love to help out for free to gain experience. I'm a domestic installer, but I primarily work on large industrial DC power systems. I'm also a Cisco engineer, fibre splicer, data cabler. I'm free one day a week, so if you ever just someone short notice give me a shout. I'm qualified, fully equipped and insured.

    Hi Cory, I expect you are way too busy to reply to this ! but if you do have a minute could you please advise to if you have a change over system from grid /offgrid solar . I have a Solis hybrid and it does have a backup system but no changeover to isolate one from the over avoiding backfeeding ? I have built a backup board with a changeover switch and breakers for the grid and Inverter feeds but not sure the best way to ensure a safe operation. Thanks if you can reply and no worries if you cant , love the channel cheers Neil

    +Cory Mac - ØY Electrical
    Please consider your TT installations and the case of 100mA time delayed upfront RCD, combined with downstream 30mA RCBOs of the single-pole variety.
    Does this configuration, in combination with TT earthing, result in upfront RCD tripping when there is a Neutral-Earth fault on a final circuit?
    If not, why not? If so, is the only solution to go to double pole / 4 pole RCDs/RCBOs downstream of the upfront RCD?.

    • @corymac
      @corymac  2 месяца назад +1

      They are all double pole downstream 😄

    • @SimonIremonger
      @SimonIremonger 2 месяца назад +1

      That makes sense for your nice upmarket installs; however there will be people looking to add solar and offline modes to existing all-RCBO board setups.(with large numbers of Type-a RCBOs, relatively modern, but single-pole).
      Thusly; please do discuss the detail and my tripping-question when convenient =).
