Many people no longer take the time to check their installation properly and that's what annoys me the most in this job. Our profession is one of the most dangerous in the world and can have immense repercussions on the lives of many people. Fire, electrocution,... so many things that can be easily avoided just by testing properly. All this just to save more time, money by playing with customers' lives. They make me hate my work 🤮

AFDD would have done absolutely nothing to stop that high resistance loose connection burn - even if there was small amounts of arcing, AFDDs only tend to trigger on a large sustained arc. The manufacturers would like to tell you they would trip on loose connections - they almost never (if ever) do.

Given the increased loading being seen on domestic properties, due to the installation of EV chargers, solar and heat pumps etc, it is likely that burnout connections will become more common place. Working in industrial, it is already a fairly common fault to find as the higher currents tend to expose them better.

That’s one thing that frightens me, I check everything 3-4 times and even then it bothers me that I might have forgotten one.

    • @Ragnar8504
      @Ragnar8504 Год назад

I pull on every single wire after triple-checking all the screws. That way you can spot wires that slipped behind the terminals, I've had that happen with some brands of MCBs. You can tighten the screw all you want, the wire will still be loose.
Many years ago I briefly checked a mate's 1970s electrics in Prague and found a wire in one of the MCBs that was completely loose, clearly the screw had never been tightened. Fortunately it was on the least dangerous circuit, there was (no kidding) a dedicated 10A circuit for the bathroom extractor fan and it was this wire that hadn't been connected properly. All the other connections were reasonably tight, even though the lighting circuits were partly 2.5 mm2 aluminium.

I think they have large circuit boards in Europe as they use radials which are 16amp at the breaker because a lot of their plugs have no fuses as we do in the UK.... I may be wrong, i'm a joiner, but that is how i understand it. I go to sweden and they sometimed tell me not to put the toaster and kettle into sockets next to each other, or not turn them both on at the same time 😮 otherwise it trips the breaker..... No such issues in the UK.

We're moving into a place that had a fire in the kitchen, this was after we had put an offer in and the previous owner had it all "sorted" via her insurer, new kitchen, full repaint and new carpets throughout.
Now imagine my surprise when it turns out that the kitchen circuit (just a 20A radial for everything including an electric oven) trips the RCD. Taking the cover off the distribution board shows a fair bit of smoke residue on everything, and really is something that should have been replaced as a just in case.
Turns out there is a fault between the cable that comes from the distro to the kitchen and the sparky we got in cannot fathom where all the cabling is going (for example if you power up the circuit from the one side that will not trip the RCD you get the sockets that side plus the utility room working but not the cooker hood that's on that side). Ended up with the old feed from the distro being ignored and it being wired as 3 16A radials, left, right + utility and oven. There was also a mess of round junction boxes behind the oven unit and the kitchen sockets have been fitted fairly ham-fistedly, with filler/silicone used to fill the gaps between the socket and the tiles.
Also interesting is that the utility room had sockets for a washing machine/tumble dryer yet it has a shower, that got replaced with a couple of switched/fused spurs. Also interesting is despite it being a radial there are two sets of 2.5mm feeding the outlets in the utility, though it's unknown what the other one is for as there is nothing else we can see that it feeds.

If you have a non bs RCD protection in the charger which I'm lead to believe is the case, but one upstream what is the point of testing it. Possibly the PEN fault protection is the important part of the charger.

I'm not an electrician but dam i can do better than that. When I moved in I changed all the face plates of my sockets and I'm glad i did cause there were a couple loose connections in the back. well having watch Cory from artisan and a couple other youtubers plus everything i learn from my late grand father who was qualified, I have learnt how safety and a proper job are so so important. Needless to say My heating wasn't working either and i was waiting for someone to come out and fix it. The heating guy came out and basically said there is no power to the fused spur... knowing how bad the sockets were i checked the terminals on the fuse box... needless to say it wasn't even done up... bear in mind the person who left it in that state was qualified and doing the EICR... that just the start of what i found! There was exposed copper on the tails into the meter so the only ting protecting me from a shock was the 60a fuse. So I may not be an electrician, i may be a DIY'er but the difference is making sure you do a good job but most of all making sure everything is safe.
Top work as always cory. So glad it was caught in time!!

Also cory potential issue with the choice of that fusebox RCBO is that it isn't a double pole switching, you need the miniature versions for double pole.

Main switch is double pole so it’s fine

If I remember correctly, the miniature is as you say 2-pole switching, but is only RCBO protection on the "L". I think you can get a version that has protection on both L & N.... But forgotten where!!

Does the RCBO not need to be be double pole? I thought Fusebox only did mini double pole RCBOs? Great content as always! Cheers

I hope that they get rid of that combustible material (cardboard) from the meter room.

Those blue black splices, looks like SLIW54, are meant to be installed on utility poles. That's what they're called - overhead line splices. Whenever you see these things installed in a DB you know a dummy has worked on it.
