Lambs thought it would do well but Mariah didn’t even promote it. We are a smaller fan base and we struggle with streaming, but in physical sales we always do pretty good numbers. It’s also a compilation album filled with different music from different eras, so in my opinion it had no flow. And it was also just meant for the die hard lambs, so I don’t really think Mariah expected it to do well. I pray that with MC16 she will promote it and it will have a few features with popular artists. Love the video explaining it💞
It’s not even a fan base thing. It’s the fact that it didn’t have any appeal to the public and any appeal Caution had was killed with a lack of promotion.
@@Solo-vh9fm exactly, and then Mariah “shades” caution just cause it flopped. When caution first came out she said she loved it and had all the time in the world too work on it. If it didn’t flop she would be talking about how much she loved it. Hoping MC16 will get the right amount or promotion and maybe will span a hit
@@drunkriah8693 I think Mariah's time at the top is up now tbh. Lambs seem to be that insecure about her success that they write '20th number one' (or 19th before 2019) every single that's released and use the success of AIWFCIY as evidence that she's still a relevant artist when really she is a legacy artist like Diana Ross, Barbra, Whitney (after 2000). It's sad though because she could have still made hits if the MIAM and Infinity eras weren't the messes they were, and she did a better job at bouncing back during the Caution era.
But then maybe if Mariah is serious about MC16 being a better timed and better planned out album and she really means business (and by business I mean she ain't cancelling her business in Australia and New Zealand for nothing), we could see a light resurgence in her. I also think she needs actual hype from the public and not just the lambs, so that when that lead single is released people are invested already.

I’m happy she released the rarities, but only negative critique would be. I wish the 2nd disk was more unreleased material and not the live Tokyo concert. Because I would’ve love to see more stuff from the glitter, charmbracelet and memoirs eras.
I kinda like that it wasn’t heavily promoted because it feels more like it was done just for us fans and not for the masses. Especially with the way the world is right now it’s difficult to do a proper big promotional tour.
U r happy that Mariah was the cause of her record label loosing money..and Mariah probably had to pay out of pocket to make that horrible video or her sitting in a convertible..interesting 🤔🤔

I'm actually surprised that it did so well on the Billboard Top 200. I mean, it peaked at #31. Compare that to Infinity, a compilation album which received heavy promotion in comparison that just managed to peak at #29.

Yeah, it was mostly for the lambs.
I wholeheartedly believe The Rarities was really just for the fans. However, in my opinion I believe she (or really her team) could have taken a similar route of promoting the album like #1's (also promoting it alongside The Meaning of MC). In 1998/1999, she really just performed I Still Believe, which I personally see the equivalent on The Rarities being Out Here On My Own, since they are both covers (covers are usually big hits for the middle of the road audience), and have a sense of sadness and longing to it. I also think it goes well with Close My Eyes as a theme for The Meaning of MC, and experiencing pain but still trying to get through. She could have performed a pre-recorded performance of OHOMO and/or Close My Eyes on some of her press junkets for the memoir, and done a video and possible remix like l Still Believe.
Save the Day I think sends a good message for 2020 and is a nice choice for the lead single, and could have been similar to Sweetheart in a way (even though it wasn't actually released properly as a single) because they both have a hip-hop influence. I do believe a video could have been released earlier, like the lyric video but with actual footage of 2020 events (maybe?), and then she could have performed it live in support of the US Open Women's final instead of making that the official video.
I also think later in October/November, before promoting the Christmas special, she could have released I Pray. I believe I Pray goes with a similar theme of 2020, and trying to come together and pray and heal from experience bigotry and pain. I also believe she could have released it as a duet with Lina Robins-Tamure (if she was able to figure out how to do that during covid). Lina is still singing and has a lovely voice (go listen to her Smokey Robinson 'Ohh Baby Baby' cover) and I think it would have been so meaningful and personal to sing it with Lina. It could have either been similar to the duets of When You Believe with Whitney, or Whenever You Call with Brian McKnight.
And then to wrap-up The Rarities/Meaning of Mariah Carey promotion before the promotions of Christmas Special started, she could have released small promotional singles of fan-favourites, like Everything Fades Away or Slipping Away and performed them like she was doing the snippets for The Butterfly Returns. I also think The Daydream Tour: Live at Tokyo Dome should have been released on its own for #MC30 Daydream week, like the Live Debut, and she could have possible done the same for The Butterfly Tour at Tokyo Dome.
I don't know, what do you think? I know I'm doing too much lol. Like it's already happened and there's nothing I can change. But like Fly Like A Lamb's videos, I think as fans we like voicing our opinions about what we liked, disliked and what we believe could have been done better, because at the end of the day, we just love Mariah and want to support her.
The album had the price of 32 tracks but only 7 tracks were never heard before (HWGAA, CYHM, AILF, One Night, I Pray, Cool On You, Mesmerized). Nobody outside of the fanbase can afford that plus general public has no interest in scrapped songs. The song performed well as a compilation album and that's it. Nobody can expect the Rarities to be a huge hit.
It didn't flop. It was barely promoted. It was for the fans. There was no intention on pushing it on new people. It was just a thank you, that's all.
I mean, the album was for the lambs, but Save the Day wasn't just for us. If nothing else, Save the Day should've gotten some promotion.
I hope that Mariah doesn't plan to promote her next studio album like this one. Thats really all I care about rn. MC16
She should have released the original demo. The Rariities was all album cuts and unfinished songs minus the B sides we already knew. The concept of each year being documented was cool. I could have been fine without this and just the original demo tape. Or an album of all demos for her biggest hits.
Chile the real reason it flopped cause one it’s just a compilation album people only care about studio albums and second lambs were being lazy asf with the streaming😭 they streamed it for the first week and stoped after Help💀
I streamed it on Spotify from day one, and I still do frequently. I especially like the live performance from Tokyo tracks.

I have loved the album/soundtrack and the movie ever since they both came out in September 2001. It was also a nice distraction back then from the events that dominated the news.
it would be nice to have some commentary for the visually impaired listeners.
This album is in my Mariah discography playlist, and I especially listen frequently to the live performances from Tokio, Close My Eyes and Everything Fades Away. ❤
Mariah should have performed Save The day and Out Here on My Own on the Good Morning America (GMA) instead of singing that Vision of Love and Close My Eyes. The performances would open the eyes of the viewers of the songs in the album.
It should have had a song with Britney Spears as a single and one with Drake or Cardi. They would be huge! I don't think it should have ever been called a compilation in press because it was a lot of songs that weren't on actual albums, and that term sounds boring. Some were on maxi singles/EPs. I would have added three or four more unreleased ones, such as Skydiving, Imperfect, maybe one redone from her band Someones Ugly Daughter, and the others I mentioned. The Tokoyo part was just an added fan feature that also doubled any sale count as 2 on SoundScan, which could have been used to its advantage better.

"All I Live For" should've been the first single, it's a strong, catchy and polished song for something that was scrapped back in 1993. Her team could've easily cut together a music video using behind-the-scenes clips of Mariah throughout the years to help tie it in with her "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" memoir. If she had performed it on GMA it would've been good promotion... I don't think "Save The Day" was a strong lead single because it was a grower and made me a little scared of what material would be on The Rarities. I pre-ordered the album after listening to "Out Here On My Own", so that was a good second single choice. "Here We Go Around Again" would've also been a fun single if it was really pushed outside of Japan. This compilation had potential to be more successful if it was marketed and promoted better, but we are in a pandemic so it's understandable.

I see a lot of comments here talking about streaming. Look up information about streaming and you'll see why even though you stream a lot, that doesn't do much. If you want to really support something, you have to buy.
All her carrer since E=MC2 didn’t manage correctly. She made some amazing songs that never came out as a single. Like O.O.C.

It kind was a good thing that it flopped i wouldnt want to see mariah sharing the charts with the rubish music we have nowadays (ariana grandes singles from the last albun were beyond horrible etc etc.
I don't think the goal of releasing "the rarities" is to earn sales-- reason for less promotions fr mariah and her team. also, it was released during a pandemic, where people are less likely to purchase stuff (due to other's jobs or health being heavily affected by this) and which also explains why there's a lot of streams (people are mostly at home, probably online for hours). the album is also available to listen at in music platforms for free streaming, so others probably did not bother to buy when they can always make it up when it comes to supporting the album by streaming it a lot.
we can say this compilation album underperformed in terms of sales, but it effectively served its purpose-- it's for the fans, it's for mariah, it's to celebrate her 30th yr in the industry and we loved this album-- whether a mariah fan or not. ♥️
The intent was not to produce a bestseller product but to fulfill her contract with Sony so she could move on. The agreement was to release the remixes, the rarities, and a greatest hits package. She addressed this in her memoir.

In first place, I think that Save the Day was a bad choice as lead single. For me, it's the second weakest song of the album (the first for me is Lullaby of Birdland). It didn't had a decent music video and was not sent to radios. Besides that, The Rarities wasn't released as a physical CD in some territories. Here in my country, it is only available as streaming. Above all, this pandemic is not helping much with promotion.
Fun fact: rarities album is probably the longest album to be created. It's probably not even finished by now lol.

I don't think The Rarities did go wrong. It was Mariah celebrating with the lambs and thanking us for the support over 40 years. Unfortunately with streaming, lambs don't have the power or money they used to abling them to support her fully
Are y’all joking or did you really thought it would be a success? It was for the lambs, not for the charts. Also, Save The Day never had any potential. It’s a very warm song with no appeal. It would never make it to the charts. The message is great, but the song is on the same level of I Don’t 😴
Mariah barely makes success with her normal albuns, so it wouldn’t be with a compilation of “exclusive” material that she would make a great one. She needs to return with a great album as Caution, but with the right singles (not the GTFO ones, but radiophonic things like Caution and The Distance) and promote A LOT, to compensate the fact she is an older artist and has more difficulty to enter on the mainstream which is guided by artists with more appeal to younger people. That’s the only way she will make any success apart from AIWFCIY.

Save the Day just isn’t a good song, and it doesn’t have any commercial appeal whatsoever. There are so many different layers on top of each other that
Mariah wouldn’t know what part to lip sync in a performance never mind any potential member of the public that wants something to sing in the shower too.

Underneath The Stars, Outside, Breakdown, Can’t Take That Away, OHOMO, Migrate, Beautiful, Money, these tracks should’ve been bigger than many of her n.1’s had they been promoted properly.
She often screws up her own marketing. But you can’t be a genius artist and do all your own marketing at the same time I guess, or maybe you can but not with all the stress surrounding such a stellar career. I wish she still had a big managing team or major record label behind her like Billie Eilish, Travis Scott, Ariana Grande etc...

Saved the day does not suck it’s music for her fans.
