just an add for the viewers. (good tips for most fabric from the OP!! love it) Kite makers use either double stick tape or kids restickable washable glue sticks to hold stuff like rip-stop nylon etc.. or other fabrics that you can't pin.
Having returned to sewing after a break of 30ish years, and using a new sewing machine, I was stopped in my tracks the other day when my machine started chewing up the slippery lightweight fabric of the back of the waistcoat I'm making. Your tips are brilliant - the little bit of Selotape, new 70 needles, silk thread, tightening of the tension (to zero), and a slightly LONGER stitch have done the trick. Thank you. I'm really grateful.
I have read so many blogs with tips for slippery fabrics and was still struggling. This tip with the tape seems to have sorted me out. Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much! I’m newbie/beginner who has took on a huge ( well huge to me!) project, I was asked to alter a floor length three layer wedding gown into a high and low and to put a material extension in and turn the zipper in the back into a lace up, I agreed because of the couple trying to have a nice wedding and their budget is kind of tight with having two families of kids merging as one, my anxiety is off the charts but I’m determined to do this for them and do the best job I can and beyond, thank you so much for this video, it’s giving me the tools of knowledge that I might have a small chance of this task from the heart may turn out as I hope it will. Many thanks Colleen..this will solve my problem! You have the most beautiful hands and nails! Please paint your nails...I am so envious! Regards from South Africa!
Great explanation timing and steps .. just for the beginners it will be helpful to show how to change to shorter length and lower tension to understand mire. Thank you 😊 💓
Hi and it's great news that you've found my channel. Welcome. As for your question, you certainly can lengthen and shorten a waistband and the procedure is pretty much as you see in my video tutorial. Maybe try darts in a garment, as this will equal out the difference in size from hip to waist.
Thank you. I’m surprised how long it took to find a helpful video on this. I just totally messed up a satin skirt today! I’ve only just learned to make elastic waist skirts and I thought I’d try one cut on the bias but was too stingy to buy a pattern. I got cocky. Back to the fabric store tomorrow 😂
Love your tutorials!! This is soo helpful. I just started working with slippery fabric and you have such excellent tips!!! Thank you. PS - I watched your tips on cutting slippery fabric.... That is a life saver... my edges came out so uneven before I watched your video... I'm going to try your advice next time :)
Hi! Glad I found your link! I have a new Brother LS14 but having problems sewing fine polyester 'satin'. I keep thinking the presser 'foot' under the needle is too tight down on the fabric(?) Moreover, I cannot seem to get any variation on the thread tension as I turn it either clockwise or anti-clockwise. It certainly looks like I have followed the correct routing of the 'upper thread'. Else, on a quick learning curve here, for a guy!!!
IMHO I'd add to this by suggesting placing the needle 0.5" into the beginning of the fabric, swiveling the fabric around 180° and sewing out to the end, and reversing to do a double stich.

You are so welcome Dona! It should have a tension dial on the FS40, which is the big circular shape more or less above the needle. Turn the thread tension dial counterclockwise to loosen the upper thread tension. Turn the thread tension dial clockwise to tighten the upper thread tension. I would recommend doing a couple of test samples before sewing your curtains. I hope that helps!
