Wow this is really useful, thanks! I have a new pattern and some super-slippy fabric that will be perfect for the drapey top, but I'm tearing my hair out trying to lay out the pattern. I'm just a beginner(ish) sewist… I don't have a big cutting table and usually use pins and scissors, so your tips have been invaluable for me today! I'm off to find my old scrapbooking cutting mat, my rotary blade (still in it's packet!) and find a bunch of heavy things to use as weights. Fingers crossed no more wasted fabric, as I can cut the rest of my pieces :) Thank you!! Ruth

If you have tissue patterns you might want to gently iron them first. The static built up also helps them stay still on the fabric x

I work in silk chiffon and silk satin. As part of the pre-shrinking process, I starch it heavily, and iron it on the wrong side, damp, on a woolen blanket on the dining room table. Works a treat.
I was fortunate to find old fashioned powdered starch at a local supermarket, but spray starch will work as well. Just more expensive.
The starch rinses out in warm water when the garment is finished. Might be a little bit crisp at first, but not a problem.

You know those clear glass fermenting lids with handles for jars? My friend was using those for fabric weights. I got 9 for around $20. 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this!

So helpful! Where can I buy a cutting mat though? I've been looking everywhere, but I can only find small A4 size ones.

Hobbycraft, lovecrafts, amazon. And of course ebay sell them too. Good luck!

@@sewprettysewmindful I'm in Germany. But maybe I can see if any of those places ship to Germany. Thanks for the suggestions!
