  • Here are my tips and tricks to help you with cutting straight. You need to cut straight to prevent your blocks ending up too small, or wonky and out of square. Despite all your ironing attempts, and time spent on sewing straight, it’s essential to also have accurate cutting.

      I always wondered how they made quilts before we had rulers like we do. I can't imagine having to draw with templates on everything I make! Massive respect to my Grandmother!!! Also, I don't think I would be able to cut fabric while sitting down. I have muscle memory for standing up while cutting and I think if I had to sit down, that would be a giant list of challenges!! For the first time I experienced what happens when your blades stick together and you accidentally put two in the cutter.....I really liked that fabric...grrrrrrr.....This was a fantastic video and one I have been waiting for while not knowing I was waiting for it! Thank you Karen!! I have learned sooooo much from you!!! :)

Although I've been sewing on and off since I was a teen and have made my own clothes and costumes, quilting is a different type of sewing and I am finding your instructional videos extremely helpful and useful. Also love that you are a fellow Canuck. Suggestion - making a playlist of the various instructional technique videos you have done. If it exists amongst your playlists, I couldn't find it. If you don't have a hand weight you can use a bag of rice - that is what I use. It is enough weight to keep the ruler from shifting. This video is great - it helps so much to understand what works and why.

      True. Even I do not have those formal weights. In India we have something called as "Khal" (= a small heavy container to grind kitchen items like jigger, or garlic to make into paste) made up of stone. I use that. One may also use mere stone.

  • @Adogslife54
    @Adogslife54 Год назад +1

    I will add one tip I have found that works for me. Now, in my old age, I am not always seeing so well which line on the ruler I need to follow. When I am cutting many pieces in a row that all have to be the same size, I put a little piece (or 2, depending on size) of painters tape on the lines on the ruler that I need to follow. This prevents me from misreading the lines on those one or two squares that may be the last 2 pieces I have in that color! Saved me many times.

Yesterday I used the cutter for the first time after watching this tutorial. Your advice re posture, stance, arm motion and grip made my cutting much easier and physically more pleasant. I never got the notification for the Jolly interview! Now I have something to listen to while I work on my quilt today, yay!
    Karen, thanks for all your tips! I used to cut on my dining room table until I figured out it had a sway across the length. I didn't know why my strips were not quite straight, and a quilt sandwich I had rolled onto wood planks and basted by hand didn't turn out very flat. Now I cut (and roll) on my granite countertop in the kitchen and all is well. (My sewing triangle is very large!)
    My last comment is about starching. I had never tried it before, but I love the improved accuracy. I have been making flying geese, and there is literally nothing to trim but the dog ears. I may not always do this because of the time involved, but it sure seems worthwhile.

    I just started using a hand weight on my ruler. This really helps for those long cuts. Look for them at garage sales or discount stores. And your tip about making a 'ledge' to sew straight was a good one, it really helps to butt up the edge of the fabric as you sew. Thanks!

    I've been sewing clothes for years and cutting is my LEAST FAVORITE part so all the cutting in quilting was off putting. This video really helped, as well as realizing laundromat tables are great places to do cutting- plus no cats to help!

    I re-watch your "tips and tricks for better results" whenever I sew a wonky block. I go through the list, and check off each. Did I cut straight, do I have a fresh blade, did I iron correctly ..... After watching your video, I discover one that I missed and can continue making accurate blocks. Thank you so much for helping me sew and quilt accurately. ❤🧵

    OMG!! Gold!! I am just under 5' & my reach & arm strength are not enough to make good cuts. Your hint about using a weight on the end of the ruler is absolute gold!! I have only sewn EPP, all by hand, in the past so accurate cutting wasn't necessary; just gentle mushing here & there. I picked a simple pattern to make my 1st "real" quilt. BUT realized I had no idea how to make accurate cuts, sew straight seams & iron properly. BUT I have always believe time spent prepping on the back end make the front end so much easier. Your trifecta vids are wonderful! Short, simple & to the point. Lots of great examples. I have adjusted my stance & replaced the blade BUT the weight at the end of my long ruler is the VERY best. I have ALWAYS had issues with the ruler moving due to my height & short arms. I have placed sandpaper dots on the back & done everything I could think of to mitigate it BUT I still could not get it to work!! With the weight it works soooo easy!! Like you, I am using a 5 lb dumbell hand weight. It has the added benefit of being covered in a rubbery material to improve grip when working out, BUT that also keeps it from moving. It also makes it so much easier to match the markings on either end of my of my cutting mat. The weight is heavy enough to hold the end BUT light enough so I can tap the edge to fine tune it to the ruler lines. Just amazing!! THANK YOU!!!

    Hello Karen I don't make quilts. But would love to cut straight. I now think I must be a classic example of everything you should not do. Being left-handed doesn't help, but again it may be just with doing things wrong. I now have much to think about, thankyou for sharing this.

    Yesterday I was making curtains for our van. For everyone else it’s a simple thing, for me a scary thing because I’m extremely inexperienced and I didn’t want to stuff up. I have seen you use your weight in previous videos and I had to dig mine out, those same weights I bought a year ago when we went into lockdown in Australia, thinking I can lose weight 😂 It was so so easy with the weight on my ruler. My husband thought I was very clever.

    Hello from the UK. Thank you for all your wonderful advice. One tip O have picked up is, when using my long ruler, I have attached one of those self suction shower grip handles so that I can keep the pressure on the whole ruler whilst cutting. It helps me.

    Well, I’m definitely a clencher. 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m the queen of the sliding ruler. I’ve even had a 24” ruler slip with a 5 lb weight on the far end of the ruler. I feel like I’m taking my final exams when it comes to cutting my fabric! Yes, I’m that anxious & uptight about it. Gotta try to relax.....at least a little. Thanks for this video. 😊

    Great info, I always learn something from you! If you don’t have a five pound weight, look around your kitchen for a substitute. I use a 1.82 liter plastic bottle of tomato juice, works great. If I drink the tomato juice, I can fill the jug up with water. Happy quilting!
