I was torn when they first released this one. I like the look of it better than the previous generation, but I like the execution of the previous model. In the end I opted for the previous iteration, but either way, you're getting a fine watch!
It is a funny thing, I didn't have any feelings towards the previous version but when saw this one it totally speaks to me. Comparing aesthetics of both this really brings this watch to next generation... for me that constitutes a good design refresh!
Great watch, I think the blue angels with blue leather strap is the best looking variant of this. The strap pairs excellent with its contrasting blue and yellow color scheme
I love citizen but I personally don't get this refresh, the old one looks much more in line with the promaster name, has more of a tool feeling with the all brushed almost brutalist aesthetic. It was one of the few watches within citizen's modern catalogue that could be called iconic. To me they did an unnecessary redesign and kept some of the main core elements, while they should have just provided some technical improvements (sapphire crystal, etc). But I am certainly not a watch designer or watch market analyst so maybe this was the right move for citizen hahaha.
I have the older Blue Angels version and I absolutely love it. These watches are so underrated. Not a fan of this particular color as a pilot watch should be lighter so it can be read easier but these things are really awesome...especially for the price
The original one was cool, but I like how much more compact this one is, and how you pointed that out Teddy. Dial changes are nice too! I just wish they fully brushed the top surfaces. The big polished areas doesn’t seem like a good fit at all. One of my Promaster divers is all satin-brushed and that would have totally fit here too.

They say there are no dumb questions, so just to clarify in my mind: The GMT hand is not independently set and is slaved to the minute hand, with the hour hand being moveable independently. So I could set the airplane hand to GMT then adjust the hour hand to local, right?
I definitely prefer this new design of the Nighthawk. Very nice looking watch plus Ecodrive is a great combo. I own several Citizen watches with two over 20 years old still running on the same capacitor.
I quite like the Nighthawk. I was afraid it would be big, but it wears well on my 6.5" wrist. I'm glad I got the last generation version. It came on a bracelet, which is quite nice, and the applied indices. The slide rule bezel is fun to play with.
i got an original nighthawk as my first enthusiast watch, and i wear it 24/7. the crown protrudes a bit too much and can be uncomfortable, so i removed a link so it sits further from my hand. and my second hand is not aligned with the indices. but still, i love it. after 6 months i have two small deeper scratches, two chips on the edge the size of a grain of sand, and some shallower scratches. i'll wear it til it chips too badly or cracks, and get a pricier daily. looking into a SBG grand seiko for college graduation or first career job.
Nice looking Citizen. I have a hard time with the second hand tho… every Casio analog I’ve ever seen has a perfectly lined up second hand, from the Casio Duro to random $30 Casio’s at Walmart. I know it’s not a big deal but I like to see it line up. Thanks for the video!
Cool design refresh. But there is not a bracelet option, which is another miss. I have and love the last version, which is a busier dial, but I like the quality of the steel bracelet, applied markers, and the screw down crown. Just my opinion. Thanks for the in-depth review!
The owner a previous generation model just posted in the Citizen subreddit: "I’ve worn this nearly daily for twenty years and it works perfectly. The only repair was replacing the face which was badly scratched after taking a hard fall ten years ago." 'Nuff said.
i recently picked up the blue angles version on a blackfriday sale and love this watch.....then I learned citizen did a Snowbirds version in the A-T watch JY8071-51L and that's my next one. I like the BlueAngles but I gots to have the smpwbirds one. Especially with the white, blue and red dial. This versions nice but I prefer the crowns on the other watches. I don't like the turbine motife.
Though I'm never a fan of printed indices, I like the way they're executed here, actually an improvement over the old ones. I just wish they'd kept the sword hands. BTW, on accuracy, you meant + or - 15 seconds a month, not day, right?
Yeah I felt slightly off when he mentioned the +/-15s per day. Like "I thought quartz watches were supposed to be more accurate than that?" :D. As an owner of SKX007+Rodina+G-Shock.
What if the 2nd hand is skipping every two seconds instead of every second. Is there a way to fix that? Weird mine didnt come with directions on how to set this watch. is there anyways you can do a tutoral on how to set?
I'd rather have the knurled crowns from the older model. They could have make a nice V model crown set, and the black bezel gives the impression of an outward bezel and not a internal one. I 'm glad with the old one. Does this new one at least have a Sapphire crystal?
I am contemplating between an Oris Pro Pilot GMT or this variant of the nighthawk. I have the previous generation with a bracelet and i love it. Decisions decisions. Lol.

Love the dial and have the previous Nighthawk for 10 years. I don’t get why Citizen and Seiko are so stingy with Sapphire crystals in comparison with similarly priced Tissot and Victorinox products. Citizens mineral crystals scratch outrageously easily in my experience which isn’t good for a watch of this type (can tolerate it on a budget dress watch) which will be worn in casual situations.
Sorry but Citizen just leave me cold, just no character. Even though I do like their recently released high-end mechanical watches…The Citizen especially, I’d really like to add one of those to my collection 👍

I love my original Nighthawk. I wore it daily for 10+ years. I did need to change the capacitor (battery) and I upgraded the crystal to sapphire.

Correct. And a bonus, making sure your local hour hand is properly set to the right am/pm, the date changes with the local hour hand at midnight!
Plus or Minus 15 seconds per day? Not sure that is correct for a quartz. According to website that is +/- 15 sec per month.
When i get up in the morning, this is the only watch on my desk with the lume still blazing. It’s very impressive.

You set the overall time where you want it, GMT or whatever your local time is, I use GMT. Then click it in once and set the local hour variance.

Nice watch but the second hand should line up with the second markers on the dial. Makes it a no go for me, especially at this price point.
