Quick update on my Nighthawk. Over the weekend I received a slightly domed Sapphire crystal with blue AR coating for this watch!! I love it! Thank You for this Video. I'm from Poland, i've been working over 10 years ago in United States on Cruise Ship. I wanted to buy myself a nice watch which will be my souvenir. Now it has been over 10 years since i bought it and it works perfectly! I love this watch, it never failed me and it took a lot of hits in to the glass. I think its time to do some maintance on it, replace the glass and polish it out. I hope it'll last as long as i live. Cheers! P.S. There wasnt a single day that it was laying in my closet, using it every day, work-going out-siting at home
Nice! Citizen is also a brand that got me started. My parents gave me an Eco Drive for my Bday several years ago and it gave birth to my watch addiction! :D Thanks for great review!
Appreciate the fact you do an in-depth video based on your long term experience with the watch. So many people do unboxing videos or videos based on a few days with the watch. Those are great too, but I would rather see the long term experience. Thanks!
Yeah, I always try to get at least a weeks worth of solid wrist time with a watch before doing a review on it. I think my second video on the channel was reviewing this watch right after I bought it. I've learned a lot since then, so I thought it was worth doing a long term review on.
I really appreciate how much the links articulate, especially at the end links. A lot of times I find myself just taking it off the wrist and playing with it while watching TV and stuff. Really conforms well to the wrist too.
I never knew the Nighthawk had a GMT function or obviously how it worked... the 3 wrist sizes side by side is a GREAT feature and every watch reviewer should have this shot/feature! CRACKING REVIEW!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🧨💥
I bought this watch new about 10 years ago love the design, kind of reminds me of a Breitling. I did end up selling it because it didn’t have any timing function which I use regularly, however it is one of my biggest regrets in selling it so may have to buy it again now. One of the best and most comprehensive reviews I’ve seen my friend thank you.
After close to 20 years of wearing mine, I've had two of the stock bands break loose. I went over to a lifetime leather strap from a handcrafter, which eventually stretched to the point of disrepair. I went over to an expensive crown and buckle Nato Strap, which pulled itself apart at the adjustment holes. I then went over to an FSC French Military style band which, again, pulled and stretched itself until it was no longer useful. Now I am using a cheap Crown and Buckle Nato style band which has been going strong for around 2 years.
Those internal bezels are awesome! I used to have an Eco Drive calendrier (ended up selling it for personal reasons), but it had an internal bezel that sort of made it a GMT watch. I just played with it all the time, and I thought it was a really neat feature.
This has been both my first pilot watch & first ever Citizen piece in my collection, änd I have to say thät I’m beyond satisfied with it; mostly based on the strengths of this watch alone, I bought another Citizen - än automatic diver - änd I’m fully sold on Citizen in general & the Eco-Drive in particular. To my mind, änd in this price bracket ($0-~$350), I prefer the finishing & detail-work of Citizen even over Seiko. If any part of the aesthetic of this watch appeals to you, I say go for it & pick it up while you cän. My one “drawback” thät I can say about it is thät the stock metal bracelet (which is well-made & compliments the case fine) is sized quite large. I didn’t change it nor adjust it for almost two years, änd for thät reason it got less wrist time thän it should have. I recommend either re-sizing thät bracelet, or venturing out & selecting än aftermarket strap, especially if you want to make the busy büt subtly-colored dial to pop. I have mine on a leather gaucho from Barton; I’d say thät most rally-style straps would work very cool, änd NATOs would probably be just fine. The stock bracelet is durable büt plain: pick a good aftermarket strap if you want this piece to really sparkle.
I recently got the Blue Angels watch and I love it. It came with the blue leather strap which I prefer. I still learning how to use it. Thanks for your guidance on these watches. Keep up the great work.
I have the blue dial version of this watch and I love the styling of it. Even the factory band is decent with solid links and a milled clasp, rare at this price point. Yes not having a sapphire crystal is a con so to combat that I installed a tempered glass protector which you can't even tell is there. Some day I will upgrade the crystal to sapphire. It gets more wrist time than my grail watch, the Omega Seamaster with the 8800 movement. Well done Citizen.
Hi there, I am planning to buy this watch online tonight as a Christmas gift to myself, but am also worried about the cheaper mineral crystal being prone to scratches. Also, if I have to upgrade to sapphire, I have to bring it to a specialized Citizen service center (if there's any where I live) which will charge me a hefyty price. I have no idea about how to install a tempered glass protector on my own or even where to buy it, so I guess my question is do any local watch/ jewelry shop install this protector or do you have to do it on your own? Thanks.
Although l have a smaller wrist, 6.3/4 inches, l just love the look of this watch and, as you demonstrated, l feel that l can get away with wearing this. By the way, what a great idea it was to show that comparison wrist shot ! It really helps to envision how the watch will wear. Kudos to you for the idea, l've not seen that done before. I think my mind is made up. Now l just need to get the money together to buy the thing.
Great review, I liked all the comparisons you did. One thing I quickly realised with this watch being my first Citizen is that they are quality watches. My first thought was this is better quality than my Seiko Flightmaster SNA411.
I had a hard time picking between this and the Flightmaster, I wound up deciding mostly based on the GMT feature of the Nighthawk, and I just felt like the Nighthawk had a much more streamlined look to it. Still would like to get my hands on a Flightmaster at some point to do a comparison.
Hello from Southern California, Dave! Last week I received a pre-owned Citizen BJ7076-00E. It has the same features as the Nighthawk but lacks the screw down crown feature. Like the Nighthawk, it doesn't have a sapphire crystal. I'm considering a metal band but happy with the black leather with red stitching design. Very comfortable. So far, I'm enjoying my third Eco-Drive acquisition. Great Nighthawk video review and I'm a subscriber to your channel.
With my 8" wrist, this watch would sit very nicely - I've been planning on this being my next purchase after my recent Seiko Presage Cocktail Time SSA343J1 - which looks quite petite by comparison. Liked and Subbed!
I’ve had mine for 10+ years since grad school. The glass looks like death but I’ve used it as my edc on and off for years. I stick it in the sun and it’s up and running.
Dave thanks to this review I have just bought the Blue Angels version. It's my first Citizen as I'm normally a Seiko guy with a few Swiss watches as well. I got it for £160 & £8p&p. I'm surprised how light it is compared to my Seiko kinetic diver. I love the blue lume as my other watches are green and even though the face is busy it's still very legible. Keep the reviews coming I like your no nonsense approach to reviewing watches. Regards from the U.K. Iain
First, I would like to say thanks so much for posting this video. Thourough and very informative video about this particular watch, now you earned another subscriber. I, myself just owned this watch. First time I've seen this was at the pawnshop here in Florida, it's eye-catching and so gorgeous and I fell in love with it the moment I saw it. It's used and has tiny, minor scratches on the crystal as you have mentioned here, it will get scratches 'cause it's "mineral" crystal, but I did not care, could not help myself so I've bought it. I'm a proud owner of this Citizen Nighthawk like yourself, thanks again...:)
I just purchased this watch from Amazon, Prime day deal at $150. For that price point, it’s a very good deal. I paired it with a clockwork synergy Ducati black and red NATO strap(to compliment the face colors) and it’s a fantastic watch so far. It will more than likely be my daily watch. I have the Luke Skywalker and the Blue Angels Chrono watched. Thank you for your review. The NATO strap fit well and it didn’t feel too tight in the lugs.
Just bought this watch on an amazon one-day deal for half price directly from citizen ($150 instead of $300) with the full 5 year warranty. It arrives tomorrow. So excited!
I've just bought one of these and I am going to review it on my channel. I think it's great so far, and the size is manageable even for my girl's wrist.
I have had this watch for about 9 years? Great watch, really like it with a nato strap. The thing that sucks about it is the crystal, at the price point it should be a Sapphire crystal, Victorinox does that in these price ranges. The entire face is crystal essentially. The crystal they use is very very prone to scratches.
I just got mine in the Blue Angels edition. I wanted the one with the blue strap but couldn't fi d a decent price for that version. So I got the the one with bracelet and I can say it's the most solid bracelet of all I ever had. However I'll be looking into ordering the blue strap from citizen.
I bought this model watch about 3 years ago and its one of my favorite Citizens. At 10:22 of video i have the model with the "mesh" bracelet ( 3rd on right) which IMO gives this watch a better look/feel as the bracelet is not as bulky as the one you are featuring. Again just my opinion...great video as always
I just got mine in today! I always hesitated because I have a 6 1/4" wrist. But I saw a guy wearing one in the grocery store a few months back and he let me try it on. The lug to lug saved it. It's big, but not so big it looks awkward on me.
Nice re-review of the Citizen Nighthawk. The crystal, as you said, definitely takes up scratches. I love these watches and use the slide-rule constantly. That said, I don't like my experience with the Nighthawks. The first one I purchased new ($179) failed within 6 months. I live in the high desert and it was a daily worn watch; however, the MT920 battery failed to charge. So, it was sent back the the dealer; that took 8 weeks. They replaced the battery and the watch ran for 6 more months. It died again, and off it went again for another 8 weeks. This time the dealer sent it to Citizen and they supposedly replaced the movement/charging circuit; hopefully it is fixed. I like the design so much, I picked up a second one off the bay new. It arrived and I discovered a small dent in the case. I ended up paying $75 for a blue dial Nighthawk because of the dent. I currently have 10 Eco-drives in rotation and have owned a total of 12. Out of those, 2 watches have failed....2 out of 12. These experiences have soured the Eco-drive movements for me. They all have no jewels and are un-adjusted. The current ones mostly just stay in the watch box and look good. No other solar watches have given me any trouble, except for Eco-drive. I hope yours continues to be trouble free. The one negative I notice is that the double crowns and case shape will dig into the wrist at certain angles. The bracelet is indeed amazing for the price. I am just waiting for the Chinese to rip this design off and improve on it (talking Seikos....Tuna, Marine Master, SKX....etc). It truly is a watch of its own for now. I also find it to be very easy to read at every angle and at a glance. It is nice to see that someone else actually wears their watches. Battle scars are battles scars of a watch well worn. Great job on the video, wrist shots, and concise remarks. Cheers.
Bummer to hear you had troubles, hopefully the new movement fixes the issue. Glad to hear your dealer took care of you though, sounds like pretty good service. Sounds like you've got a lot of experience with Eco-Drives, thanks for the extra perspective!
It's almost Christmas 2021, so 30 months after this review. I just got my Nighthawk, this version rather than the new one. Paid under $250 on Jomashop, which is still a bargain. What a substantial watch this is! I'm a former aviator and submariner, so this thing really floats my boat. The GMT/local time setting system is brilliant. The bracelet is easy to size and very comfortable. Looks good and sits securely on my 7" wrist with 2 links removed from each side. This will almost certainly remain on the bracelet. It's pretty clear this is going to become a favorite.
Thank you for this in depth review! Mine is on the way and my excitement about it grows with each passing day. As a watch aficionado one must agree that a Rolex just has that cool factor that time has not been able to wipe away. And also Omega are doing a fantastic job at marketing. Having said that, I took a trip to the Ljubljana's Omega store back in spring to see the Moonwatch and to feel the hype firsthand. Well the hype didn't live up to the 6K EUR price tag so I pondered about the Swatch alternative, made from bio-ceramic and I just didn't feel the hassle of getting one from abroad (I've contacted stores in Austria and Italy, but they were of course sold out). The reason why I'm mentioning these two or three brands is because they all share the facade of being watches for professionals (Rolex has the Milgauss ⚡), but apart from the image and prestige they really do fail to deliver on some relevant complications. Enter Nighthawk... and my mind is blown! I really can't wait to get my hands on it, I feel excited to learn how to use the conversion dial and when was the last time you got excited about doing some math?! So, again... domo arigato, mr. Dave, your review was the tipping point and from what I've just written you've just helped me to secure a million $ thrill for a couple of hundred bucks! May karma repay you in full.💯🙏🏻🍀💰✨
I just ordered this watch. One thing I will do is replace the bracelet w a strap. Not much for bracelets..particularly from Citizen or Seiko. Kind meh. It's a beautiful watch, love the dial layout and the functions are very user friendly.
I love the blue angels editions. Really cool color scheme, and I remember going to an air show as a kid to see the blue angels and I thought they were the coolest thing ever.
I know what you mean.. I just returned my flightmaster and when I receive my refund I will be buying the nighthawk instead. The flightmaster looks great in videos and pictures but, when I purchased one online and took it out of the box and put it on my wrist I just didn't like it. I was leaning towards the nighthawk at 1st but, then got caught up with the seiko flightmaster hype and chose that instead and regretted it once I actually held one. I look forward to the nighthawk.
Seeing the Blue Angels versions drop in price almost makes me want to pick one up, but I try to keep my collection small and I don't really have space to have two versions of the same watch, even if it's one of my favorite watches...
@@JusttheWatch That's a tough call, but it might be worth it to try it out and compare. I don't how sentimental your black dial version is to you, but you may end up liking the Blue Angels version more and may not feel the need keep both. I'm having the same struggle with G-Shock squares and even f91w's ... So many I'd like to have but how many of the same watch do I really need? lol
I bought a Blue Angels after comparing some other watches for quite a time. It's a unique watch, great value and should be as well made as other Citizens I have. I love the internal bezel and will use it as a minute countdown timer mainly. I will stick a protective film over the glass. Thanks for the excellent review.
I've been thinking about getting this watch since you put out this review. Thx for the review BTW. I saw this on sale for black Friday today on Amazon up here in Canada for $230ish US. It was the Blue Angles version with the metal bracelet. I always kinda wanted one of these and for that price you can't go wrong. Its going to be my little Christmas present to myself as I'm want to do every year now that everyone just gives you cash or something inpersonal like a gift card. 😅
Great video Dave. I have this nighthawk and the blue angels one too. The blue angels wears slightly smaller I would say, perhaps due to the dark surround. Keep up the good work.
Great video!! I love my Night Hawk as well. I also have the Navihawk A-T Blue Angels edition with mesh bracelet. One of my favorite features is the slide rule bezel these watches have. I'm a sucker for those bezels, and play with them when ever I'm bored. My Breitling Navitimer has the slide rule bezel as well, but it's just not quite as "Readable" as the Citizen bezels. I did put my Night Hawk on a rally strap with red stitching, but I went back to the original bracelet as the watch didn't look as natural as it does on the bracelet. Thanks for your review of this watch!!!!
Great video, I just ordered one. I have An atomic radio controlled as well as GMT citizens. As well as Bulova and seiko. You can’t beat the eco-drive, tho
Great review ! I’m considering’ to buy this watch and I think I will try to get the sapphire version even if it is much more expensive... Congratulations for the « wrist size comparison » it’s really VERY useful. And thank also for the zoomed pics : really great !
Great video. I don’t know if I’ve seen anyone else put side by side comparisons of the watch on different sized wrists. Personally, with much larger than average wrists, I never can quite know how a watch will fit me. Stick with this format for all your watch reviews, it doesn’t get any better than this.
Yeah I want to do more of those wrist comparisons. The problem is that it's hard to get together three friends with different wrist sizes for every video.
You bring up awesome points in thi review. H mine for about 8 months now and I find it very difficult to now have a viable “rotation “. This machine is my first citizen. I did not know. Aside from being extremely comfortable on my small wrist, it is just easy to look at and the accuracy is way better than I could have imagined. However, I have yet to learn how to use the complications it offers. In due time I’m sure. What really drew my attention to your list of xcellent points was the sapphire glass and where to get it. Although this guy has been a constant companion it is still unscratched. Then, there’s the issue of straps. Lug width? And does Barton or bandini produce such an animal? I don’t need to be guessing when you may have the knowledge I seek. I thank you for all things Nighthawk and also Citizen. See ya next time and thx again. brt
I have owned this watch since 2007, worn almost daily. It was not new when I got it. My son and I traded watches. He got a 1947 Gold Bulova family heirloom. I have SCUBA dived with it to 42 meters depth, no problem. Now in 2020 it is doing the two second hand jerk sweep meaning it needs a new capacitor / battery. And the crystal is very scratched. I will replace the capacitor, I have the tools. Question is, $25 mineral crystal replacement or $75 sapphire?
Would be almost perfect with a day window and indiglo/electroluminescence backlight. Also the rotating inner bezel could show minutes or hours instead, would be more useful to have some cronograph functions like divers. But still hard to resist to buy it.
One important thing: you need to have vision like a hawk in order to read the stuff on the bezel. I think the font is 1 point in size or less. So small. What's the point? Seiko FightMaster's bezel is better since it is outside and it is far easier to use while wearing the watch in hand.
Good presentation, it's helpful somehow. I have two points to be considered. One, the watch came out in 2001, I'm wondering is Eco-Drive system can guarantee another 10 years operation ? Two, the scratches on the crystal maybe fixed by using watch screen protector.
Dang you! You unleashed a little gremlin In my wallet! I went from wanting one watch two three watches to four and now I'm about at 6 to 7 watches that I want.
Has the madness slowed down? I found with watches and other EDC items (knives, flashlights) that once I have a small rotation of, say, 3-5, really good, quality, nice pieces that I'm generally satisfied and I can move on to something else.
Great review of the watch. I’ve been wondering, if you wear it on your left wrist, can you turn the slide rule dial with your right hand or do you need to take it off your wrist to use it?
Chad Schneider i have no problem using the slide rule while wearing it in my left wrist. I hold my right pointer finger at the 2 o’clock position and my thumb can move the crown at the 8 o’clock without any issues. The patterned texture on the crown gives amazing grip for the slightest pressure from the thumb as I move it across the top of the crown. This also means that it’s easy for the crown to move unintentionally- I often find it has moved off the reset position and my OCD needs to put it back.
They should have the crown for the measurement bezel on the same side as the crown. Since I wear the watch on my left wrist I feel like I'd need to take it off to use it.
I've worn mine nearly every day for 12 years. Never had any problems, still works and keeps perfect time.
I used mine for a good 5 years until I stupidly dropped it and broke the crystal 😢

I’ve had mine for 10+ years since grad school. The glass looks like death but I’ve used it as my edc on and off for years. I stick it in the sun and it’s up and running.
I'm a big fan of Citizen Eco-Drive watches and this one is on the wish list. Nice real-world review.
Iain
I just bought a Blue Angel Nighthawk today and I'm looking forward to it! How did you find yours?
@@NathanChisholm041 ebay
@@iaincobain3594 Do you still wear it? They are an iconic watch, that just about everyone recognizes and agrees on how awesome they are...
I'm wearing it right now
First, I would like to say thanks so much for posting this video.
Thanks man! Welcome to the club!
150$ a new watch or used ?
Just bought this watch on an amazon one-day deal for half price directly from citizen ($150 instead of $300) with the full 5 year warranty. It arrives tomorrow. So excited!
That's a great deal!
@@JusttheWatch Thanks, I'm sure it's worth every penny. I appreciate your video helping me to make a final decision.
Yeah I agree, would love to have seen a saphire crystal on this. I've on;y had mine for three years and it's got a fair amount of scratches on it.
I just got mine in the Blue Angels edition. I wanted the one with the blue strap but couldn't fi d a decent price for that version. So I got the the one with bracelet and I can say it's the most solid bracelet of all I ever had. However I'll be looking into ordering the blue strap from citizen.
I have the blue strap and love it.
Thanks for doing the multi reason reviews 👏🏼 I bought the Skyhawk A-T, wish I had bought the Nighthawk. Such a cool dial.
Just received my nighthawk today and I love it.
Loved the review. Nicely done. Really close to picking one up and this was immensely helpful. Thanks
Glad I could help!
Such a well thought out and expertly delivered review. Very well done. Thank you for the information.
Thanks for your review!! was not sure. Now added to cart!
Top notch review, love your different wrist size comparison.
I just ordered this watch. One thing I will do is replace the bracelet w a strap. Not much for bracelets..particularly from Citizen or Seiko. Kind meh. It's a beautiful watch, love the dial layout and the functions are very user friendly.
Picked one up on amazon based on this video. Such a high quailty watch for price. Love the tapered bracelet. Great review!
great watch had it for around 7 years working good
Very complete video 👍🏻👍🏻. My top citizen pilot is the C300 Navihawk blue angel, in second place is my nighthawk blue angel, I love that watch.
I love the blue angels editions. Really cool color scheme, and I remember going to an air show as a kid to see the blue angels and I thought they were the coolest thing ever.
Wish I'd got the "Red Arrows" version of this instead of my overhyped Seiko Flightmaster . Cheers 👍
Great video! Love the Nighthawk, I've tried the Blue Angels version on a few times at different watch stores and really loved it.
So many I'd like to have but how many of the same watch do I really need? lol
Got mine today.......finally, I love it
I bought a Blue Angels after comparing some other watches for quite a time.
The Blue Angels Navihawk is a pretty cool looking watch. I like the Nighthawk on other straps, but I think my favorite look is still on the bracelet.
Great video, I just ordered one. I have An atomic radio controlled as well as GMT citizens. As well as Bulova and seiko. You can’t beat the eco-drive, tho
Great video. Love the side by side wrist shots!
Thanks Bob!
Another great video as always! That watch is so busy and I can never tell if I enjoy it or not. I've had my eye on this watch for a while now.
The busy dial is sort of an acquired taste. I really like it but I know a lot of people prefer simpler cleaner dials.
Great review ! I’m considering’ to buy this watch and I think I will try to get the sapphire version even if it is much more expensive... Congratulations for the « wrist size comparison » it’s really VERY useful.
And thank also for the zoomed pics : really great !
The most beutiful watch ever
It would be fun to watch a video on how to use various features of the nighthawk.
Get the Navihawk AT it is on sale at Amazon for $300, it is Atomic auto setting and Solar charging.
You bring up awesome points in thi review. H
mine for about 8 months now and I find it very difficult to now have a viable “rotation “. See ya next time and thx again. brt
This watch looks like a ton of fun! I think a slide rule would be a fun thing to have on my wrist, too! Lol.
Best looking bracelet in it's price range
I have owned this watch since 2007, worn almost daily. It was not new when I got it. My son and I traded watches. He got a 1947 Gold Bulova family heirloom. I have SCUBA dived with it to 42 meters depth, no problem. Now in 2020 it is doing the two second hand jerk sweep meaning it needs a new capacitor / battery. And the crystal is very scratched. I will replace the capacitor, I have the tools. Question is, $25 mineral crystal replacement or $75 sapphire?
Agree. It is simply a great watch, from any perspective.
im in love with the navihawk at, and im looking to expand my collection getting this one
GREAT idea with the side-by-side comparisons, especially those of the Nighthawk on different sized wrists. Thank you for the review!
It’a a lot of watch fir the momey, but I’m leaning more toward the Blue Angels AT.
I strongly suggest the blue Angel's watch. I have it and love it.
Excellent review and helpful information!
I have the same exact Nighthawk but with a blue dial not the Blue Angels version . Enjoyed your video!
Love the Blue Angels version, almost makes me want to buy a second nighthawk!
I've got the blue Angel But that deep sunburst blue dial on your one really pops! You still got it?
@@NathanChisholm041 yes I do one of my favorites in my collection
Love the wrist comparison! Great. Nice watch too.
Good presentation, it's helpful somehow. I have two points to be considered. One, the watch came out in 2001, I'm wondering is Eco-Drive system can guarantee another 10 years operation ? Two, the scratches on the crystal maybe fixed by using watch screen protector.
Would buy, but already got the Promaster Sky which looks almost the same but has even more features 😅
I like the Who-like intro and transition music.
My at4117-56h was only $100 off Ebay and it has sapphire crystal. The seller thought it was broken but I knew he just had it in alarm mode.
I got one an is 10 years old now it worth the money
“We’re going to talk about three concerns about it later in the video.”
Proceeds to talk about them immediately… lol
casio g shock gm 2100 vs citizen nighthawk. Which one is better when you are on vacation at the beach?
The more I watch these videos on the nighthawk the more I want it. Hopefully my wife will let me lol
That's always the trick, isn't it? Good luck!
David if you want it, buy it. You’ll thank yourself every time you wear it.
Its better to ask for forgiveness, than to ask for permission...
I've been looking at this one for a while and at another citizen with sapphire glass, but is around 320 so I have some thinking to do.
That's what I paid for my Blue Angel's watch. I'm glad I got it. Easy to use and looks great, too.
David Duchovny's watch geek cousin.
Thank you for the review.
Put a sapphire crystal on it! I did looks great with a domed sapphire crystal!
I have mine on those Chinese Apple watch strap and it wears great on my small 6 n a quarter size wrist
Blasphemy!
Great review thanks i'll have to look into it its a great looking piece.
The scratches may be the non-reflective coating, not necessarily the crystal itself.
Very nice review! I like Citizen watches!
The moment I see his hands I knew I can trust him no man with hands like his will talk crap ,👍
great watch, i would love one
Thanks, nice informative video.
Just a great overall watch.
It looks like you set the GMT hand in the regular time setting position, and then set the hour hand in the date position. Am I correct?
