This watch almost does it all.
    - Auto set time - radio controlled
    - Has a date function, that knows each month, for example Feb to March.
    - Rechargeable
    - Chronograph
    - leap year knew exactly what date.
    Really impressive.

I set all of my automatics to this watch! Never really liked large busy watches but this one grabbed me. The blue and yellow look amazing. With eco drive, atomic, sapphire crystal, 200 meter features it is an amazing value. Mine came with the bracelet and is pretty good but I have replaced it with a blue sailcloth strap that looks amazing. It is an absolute keeper for me.

I just now sold mine to a work colleague. I've had this watch for about 5 years and it's been a great tool for work and travel. I wore it on a black rubber bracelet when I traveled on a motorcycle for a year from Texas to Argentina. The Sapphire glass is still crisp and clean. It's such a beast of a watch for everyday wear. I'm currently wearing my Datejust 41 mm Rolex and a micro brand watch Vaer Swiss watch so I needed to give the Citizen a good home and let someone else appreciate it. As a person who is hard on tools and toys this one has passed the "Julio Proof Test" Enjoy!

Hellooooo Jody! Excellent review. The ana-digi variant in titanium was one of the first watches I acquired starting down the rabbit hole of this hobby we share. Late in my Navy career I was a station pilot assigned to NAS Pensacola. I flew the military variant of the Beechcraft Super King Air 200 there, the UC-12B it was called, and was assigned as the base's Aviation Safety Officer. Pensacola is the home of the Blue Angels and those of us assigned there like me put on their annual show closing their season out in November where they would perform one last time for the home crowd. Every week during the season, on Tuesday I think it was, they would go through their routine above the airfield and it was a privilege to be able to go out on the flight line with my morning cup and watch. They really were outstanding ambassadors for the service in general and Naval Aviation in particular. Their themed watches were among the first I became aware of categorically and once I started collecting I knew I had to have one. And I can tell you the instruction manual for the variant I have is absolutely terrifying! Thanks again for the review and thanks always for being such an enjoyable ambassador of this hobby! Cheers!

In addition to the 23mm lug width, Citizen also uses CURVED spring bars for this one. The leather strap is curved to fit the case. I could never get it comfortable on my 6.75" wrist, so I opted for a NATO. I use the leather on my Blue Angel Skyhawk. Also, I've read that there is a slight difference between the bracelet version, though I can't confirm this. Prices have gone up. This used to be on Joma for $299 ($319 on the bracelet). JOMW, you are responsible for my first ever comment. Keep up the great work!

If you're using an app to set time you can use headphones and sandwich the watch between speakers, or use a big bluetooth speaker and raise the volume. It's a magical feeling when you sync the watch this way. I use the WWVB emulator app for the Colorado clock signal. It's a similar noise.

I have had my AT8020-54L (bracelet version) for over two years and it remains one of my favorite analog chronographs. I especially like the dual mode large seconds hand (running and stopwatch seconds), rather than the typical small running seconds hand. My other watches with this feature are my Bulova Precisionist chronographs and my Casio 5174 module watches (LIW-M610D-1AJF & WVQ-M410DE-1A2JF). My Timex Intelligent Quartz chronographs take that a different approach by using a fourth hand for stopwatch and countdown timing.

While this watch may feel a little busy, once you realize all the functionality it has, I feel it's an incredible feat in miniaturization of electronics and mechanical features; having all thoses computerized features (without it being a "smartwatch") is impressive.

I love this watch, it's an everyday for me. It's full featured and a great supporter and comfort (like my wife!) I put it in the right spot at night, it reliably receives and syncs the time/date, and I never ever wonder if it has the right time/date. The watch is very easy and slick to operate (but you need to spend time using its many features - not for someone who wants trivial operation, best choose a simple 2-hand watch if you are). The watch needs a longer review to really do justice to its array of features. This review is a great summary (nutshell, as Mr Jody says) pretty comprehensive but a bit rushed - as is probably the right choice for a RUclips review. Thanks for a great if compressed review, it should allow someone to decide if this is a good fit for him/her. Tldr love the watch, wears great on my 6.5" wrist, does everything I would ever want, love the 'intensity' as Jody says, amazing as Jody says, never a worry about accuracy or battery not charged. Recommended!!

Probably the favorite watch in my collection, so much functionality, and all powered by the sun! Do not let the thick manual scare you, just read a couple of pages on the key features and you are good to go. I have owned this watch for four years and have NOT touched the crown, short of a smart watch, who can make that claim? Get the bracelet version it is so comfortable and the clasp works beautifully. I think saying it “has a battery life of 6 months” is misleading. From a full charge it will run down for 6 months, but when placed back in the sun it fires right back up. Citizen says the capacitor (battery) has a life of 10 years, which is a better way to explain the longevity. If you are on the fence, get one, you won’t regret it. I set all my other watches to this reference piece. Lastly, I get the signal every night, no problem, and I live in Northern Canada.

When I got my Navihawk, I searched RUclips to find the easiest way to set it. Much better than figuring out the manual, and since it's been set, it's never been touched again other than when I change time zones. Citizen themselves has one that's kind of dry, but one of the other watch youtube channels I followed actually had a better one. Seems like it might have been Watch Geek.

I bought this watch a few months ago with the leather strap. Here is an honest review. Overall, it’s a GREAT watch, but a few simple mods would make it outstanding. First, the leather band - 23mm, what was Citizen thinking? Absolutely awful decision and could easily be fixed with 22mm. My band started to crack and I swapped with an aftermarket NATO band and I love it! Second, not sure why there is a twentieth of a second stop watch and in my opinion serves no functional purpose. This could easily be eliminated and replaced with a month and day indicator. Lastly, the lume at night is not good. It isn’t as bright as it should be and it could be a little fancier. However, I do not regret the purchase.

Got the bracelet model as a graduation gift when I finished college in 2018. It's my daily and has been on a few vacations. So handy to change the time zone when I land and just go. Only time it's off my wrist is on more dressy occasions when my Blue moon comes out or if I'm doing something hard on a watch or going somewhere that a nicer watch is a target in which case my Casio makes an appearance
I find the watch pretty legible but it took some getting used to. Only niggle I had was about a year in the pin that holds the bracelet to the end link kept sliding out (it uses a little divot that lines up inside a tube) that said a quick trip to the watch maker and he dipped the ends in locktight and I was good to go. I paid $500 Canadian but I've seen It now down in the mid 400s

I have one of these, the version on the bracelet. A couple of items to be aware of with this watch:
    - It takes a 23mm strap; Citizen does this with some models. Try finding a 23mm strap (it's HARD).
    - The lug holes are in different positions in the bracelet vs the strap version of this watch. In the strap version, they're closer to the case but Citizen put a bevel in the case back to keep the strap from scraping the case but you must use curved spring bars (and a 23mm strap to boot). In the bracelet version the lug holes are spaced further away from the case but NO bevel in the case back. So, you must still use curved spring bars if the strap has any thickness to it like a typical leather strap else the case edge scrapes the finish off the strap. If you use a fabric strap you might can get away with straight spring bars if the material is thin enough. It is quite angering Citizen didn't bevel the case back in the bracelet version like in the strap version of this watch.
I know all of this having learned the hard way; I had both version in my possession at the same time for a very short while.
I have the bracelet version but wear it on a strap. I was able to get my hands on a 23mm strap I liked (a cheap custom strap) and got curved spring bars from Citizen. The strap did not have a curved end version so I steamed that area over a boiling tea kettle spout for about 30 seconds, slipped the curved bars in the strap mount tube and let it 'set'. Not idea but it works; the case still scrapes a bit against the strap when swiveled but it didn't do any damage to the strap.

I bought this almost a decade ago and still one of my favorite chronographs. 200m WR, atomic clock syncing, perpetual calendar, great colors blue and yellow, inner rotating bezel, comfortable, sapphire crystal, excellent chronograph with fun continually rotating subdial, and great design inspired by an airplane cockpit! Biggest complaing is 43mm size and 23mm lugs. 40-42mm and 20mm lug would have been perfect!

The caveat I would offer is to also be aware of how to set the references on your watch so that everything lines up where it is supposed to - hands, date, etc. Took me a day and a half to figure that out (being an engineer, I WRITE instructions, I do not care to actually READ instructions.) 😉 The busybusybusy dial is not that easy for geezers my age to read, but that's why they sell reading glasses. So far, I love it!

I have a similar age (maybe 5 years older) EcoDrive GMT that rarely gets in my rotaton, even less so during CV19 period and inadverantly was moved to a no light location for who knows how long.
Even a full day in direct sunlight wouldn't bring it back to life but before accepting the battery was kaput I left it in a window for a few days and amazingly the battery eventually was resurrected. Great piece of tech.
My wife's got an EcoDrive so she had a watch while her Swiss premium watch had a replacement battery/ service at the official service centre and it cost less than the service and has become her go to watch.

I have the Titanium A-T, non-Blue Angels version of this watch. I’ve had it for 10 yrs and only just now had to send it to the service center because it wont charge and wont pick up the radio signal. The little slide rule bezel is way cool, but speaking from experience, totally useless while flying a small plane. But, I’ve never even used the chrono or alarm features in a decade. I just like not having to reset the thing. Great watch. I love mine.

I'm glad you reviewed this one, I have been eyeing it on Amazon for quite a while but was sorta intimidated by it. Now I'll have to think about it when I can afford it.
Good on you for giving some love to the eco drive watches. Most of my watches are automatic, but I decided a couple years ago that I should have some quartz watches for travel so I could take them through airport security without them getting destroyed. I wanted solar because I didn't want to deal with batteries, and I selected Citizen just because I could get a Citizen solar cheaper than a Seiko solar. I bought several on ebay - I didn't particularly care about having new at a new price - and love them to my surprise. One is a titanium watch with sapphire crystal I got for $40 used, and I wear it often as a daily beater.

Slide rules can be used for conversion.
Say you want to convert from $AUS to $US, currently 1.29 to 1.
Put 1.29 (just below 1.3) on the outer ring over 1 on the inner ring. Then you can read of any conversion anywhere around the slide rule. For example, 25 on the outer ring sits over 19.3 on the inner ring. Of course, you have to adjust the decimal point in your head.

I love Eco Drive watches. I have the non chrono Citizen Blue Angels. It’s a great watch. I’m in Australia and use the clock wave app to set my radio controlled watches. You really need to use ear buds put these next to the watch and turn the volume up. It works every time for me 👍🏻 You might need to set the home city to Tokyo and then when it sets adjust the home city to Sydney

Great video. Thank you for the specifications review, but also for the tutorial. I have an early version of this watch from the mid-1990s. It got lost for a couple of years, stuck in a briefcase, and then I found it a few months ago … dead as a door nail. I put it in the sun for a couple of days and, voila, it was running just like new. I was so impressed I bought this version with the bracelet (AT8020-54L). Big fan of Citizen watches!

I recently picked up one of these and I adore it! I too found a lot going on with the dial, but I've always found mine to be very legible, even at a glance (which is something that surprised me). Overall, I love this watch, but I've also had very good luck with my Citizens. It seems like Citizen is a highly underrated brand, or maybe that's just the impression I get. Great video, as always, Jody!

I have several solar G-Shocks that I leave on my bedroom window sill when I’m not wearing them. They stayed charged and up to date with the atomic clock. I live in the US so it is not at issue getting reception. I set my other watches by an app on my phone.

I’m normally not that keen on Citizen (except for their rare super high-end, super accurate, ultra-slim and very expensive models made of exotic materials) but this one I really like! A bit like a Navitimer on the cheap. Love that perforated leather strap too. It does seem to be a complicated little bugger to setup though. But then you only need to do that once…

I like this newer version of the Blue Angels watch. Mine is a Citizen JY8058-50L Blue Angels that is a digital/analogue with a 46 mm case and is 15 mm thick and with the Stainless metal bracelet I am always aware of it when I wear it. But of course, so is everyone else and that is part of why I still love it. Lol
This smaller version with just a few complications feels like a nice in between to wear and get great use out of. I will say that I'm so glad that I live near the Radio signal to set it for me, because that is the feature I like best about it.

I used an Android app called JJYEmulator to set my Casio Waveceptor - the hardest part was discovering the best set of headphones to use with it. Sennheiser over-the-ear corded jobs work, but YMMV. The fluttery screeching noise is awful.
IMO these Citizen watches are better than the Seiko Flightmaster, and they both look wonderful. But they need to come with a magnifying glass and a highschool maths teacher to remind you how everything works. My pick is the Navihawk (or black Nighthawk) which keeps the sliderule but drops the stopwatch, calendar and radio setting. It's also ~$200 cheaper and has little aeroplanes on the 24 hour marker - Biggles would be over the moon.

I have this model ,I was able to snatch it for 250 dollars on a black friday sale.
I wills may the band is very small if you have big wrist you may consider buying a metal band or an after market barton or something.
The watch is nice and it hits all the makers. it also syncs every night with no problem
I think it is fairly priced at 300 tops because of the sapphire and the atomic function. but anything more I would not pay.

I have the bracelet version. My watch synced to the radio sync app after some time trying. What I found is if you do not have the watch positioned correct the hands will start moving after a short time. If it is positioned correctly the hands (the second hand) will remain stationary for a much longer time 5 to 10 minutes. This is the watch syncing, be patient. Then check. Works for me. Also try to keep things as quiet as possible.

I live in Colorado where there’s one of the Atomic clocks (I believe for NORAD) but when I can’t get the signal, I use the Clock Wave app and it works every time. It bases the clock signal off where your GPS is to find the closest tower and replicates it.
