Professor Peterson talks concept of "respect" at Senate Committee on Bill C-16

- Professor Jordan Peterson responds to question from Senator Plett, regarding recurring question from critics: "Why can't you just respect your students?"
Dr Peterson a reasonable sane man speaking to an insane world.
Reason is subjective. It's been very well demonstrated this past decade. What makes sense to you and I doesn't make sense to somebody else. For example the leftist extremists who push their bs. To them, what they do is reasonable. It's reasonable to force people to speak a certain way.
@@tatemack107 why?
Yes yes yes
Oh look, more Peterson-inspired gaslighting.

Right on mate, and to extend that , when you are imposing/forcing respect, expect back a certain degree of fear, hate , and back knifing. From what i've seen in my life, only mafiosi and trumpists demand respect. The rest of us are working hard to earn it.
He is so eloquent powerful and sharp, it's like listening to Beethoven's symphonies.
Great way to describe it.
grave, solemn, meticulous.
Yes, like the third movement of the 9th symphony I think. Cool headed, honest dignity.
He's one of the few people I can listen to all day. No bull shit, no ego, just plain explanations of his points that are always backed by science. Think the reason he's so hated by the left is because unless you're more well read than he is (good luck with that) he'll always make you look like an uninformed fool in a debate
“Eloquent powerful and sharp”?
I would like him to actually prove his argument instead of rambling as he does. It looks like he was high on benzodiazepine when he made this little show.
As usual, Dr. Peterson sounds the voice of reason.

@@Shushkin You get his point, you’re just arguing for the sake of arguing.
You’re trying to sound smart.
@@Shushkin How can you say reason is subjective at the same time you’re calling feminists reason bs? You’re not very bright are you.
Mmm. No, he isn't and what's dangerous is laying claim to reason as you do but without doing it.
@@edmqnd8128 hes actually not wrong in his thinking. If reason is subjective, everyone can have a different way of reasoning or thinking. Through his perspective, he sees the reasoning of feminist totalitarianism wrong. But through a feminist perspective, they would see his logic as bs. Much like 2 people arguing over the colors red and blue because each like one over the other. Just because someone picks sides doesnt mean they cant or shouldnt understand how the bigger game works. He's well aware that reason is subjective and different, that includes his own. And the one thing that desides who's reasoning is valid is the truth. Hard facts backed by evidence.
I was very happy to see that mrs. Doubtfire took the time out of her day to be there in person and listen to this talk.

Whoever is tasked with translating what he's saying into French for the earpieces is having a very difficult day.
How would you know?
@@George_Kush because Peterson's command of English is about as good as it gets which means the translator would have to be one of the best linguists across both languages to convey it in equally high quality and eloquent french.. it would be one of their most difficult days in that chamber
@@sidewinderxx Well I'm a french speaker and tbh I wouldn't find it difficult to translate. A lot of the words he uses are very similar in french such as "reciprocal interaction" vs "interaction réciproque" and "self-defined indentity" vs "identité auto-définie"...
@@George_Kush cool, now do it live at the pace that Peterson is talking, and compare it with translating what the senator said and tell me which is more difficult, and over the whole hearing not just 2 minutes

First 2 seconds Dr. Jordan sits there and looks around with a look in his eye like "wtf I am surrounded by ideologues, this world is coming to an end..."
I mean , in a room full of intelligent people JP still dwarfs them on intellect and understanding ....wow
If you think that Canadian politicians are intelligent then I would recommend that you might want to think harder
These issues aren't settled enough in society to make such laws. They don't know enough about it because the only people they hear from are activists.
Intelligent?
I've never seen him in a room full of intelligent people. I've seen him with idiotic students, stupid talking heads, and politicians.
Politicians for the most part, are comprised sleazy salesman. They feed their voters with typical bs. Unfortunately a majority of the voters will do or believe whatever corrupt politicians and their minions in the main stream media, etc. tell them to do or believe. Politicians are fake and not wise. Those that question they bs are wise.
Whenever Dr. Peterson opens his mouth, Pure logic and facts come out.
At least the guy who asked the question was one of the few non hypocrites in this room, calling him Dr., not Mr. Peterson like most others.
Talking about respect right there..
They probably did that on purpose, to bait him into requesting they show their respect and call him a doctor. That, of course, would look bad especially in this situation.
depends. a lot of academics really don't care unless it gets extremely formal.
on the other hand, i can't think of anything more formal than a public hearing... 😆
@@M0butu I've often seen academics subtly insult each other by substituting "Mr." for "Professor" or "Dr." It's quite often deliberate.
Because he is part of the conservative party and they don't fall for this nonsense.
It’s important for everyone to remember that Peterson is not speaking against transgender people. Nor is he even speaking against nonbinary identifies folks. All he is doing is speaking against a bill that could potentially be used to compel speak and compel adherence to a certain ideology about gender.
But he has done so previously. It's oddly convenient of him to be in opposition to this bill when (if you've read the bill or any experts opinion on it) it only adds gender identity and gender expression to an already existing list of protected classes. You can't do hate speech against people based on sex, religion, race etc. and now also gender expression and identity, what's the big deal? (im specfically talking about the bill that can affect speech, it also did other things) This isn't the nail in the coffin for free speech, which is why it's odd to be so strongly opposed to it.
@@sandmand4036 My understanding is that it adds gender expression and gender identity to protected classes. Makes sense. The problem is that these identities are not always like the others. For instance, someone who identifies as nonbinary Xe/Xem wishes to be refered to as such. If you do not believe either in the identity of a Xe/Xem or you do not wish for whatever reason to endorse their identification as Xe/Xem, then you are erasing an identity thought to be inalianable. It may also upset the person, and they may bring up the high trans-suicide rate to illustrate the point that everybody should affirm everyones gender identity and to not do so is violence, and hate speech. Thus, everybody would have to use words and concept like Xe/Xem, demi-gray masc a-gender, etc, or risk committing a hate crime. The Bill leaves a grey area over whether people would be allowed to not affirm someones elses identity signifies.
@@umwha The way I see it is this: #1) This bill would punish "hate speech" toward trans people. #2) This law gives trans or Q people a special "right" to demand that people speak to them as they prefer, ergo speaking incorrectly to them can be judged "violence or hatred" if they get upset and complain. #3) When a law threatens to punish people for failing to speak a certain way, the law effectively compels people's speech as the only way they can protect themselves/avoid risk with certainty. The law cannot say, "We're not compelling you to use certain speech. You're free to refuse," but then add, "But we'll drop a ton of bricks on your head if you do refuse."
@@sandmand4036 The difference is when it comes to religion, race etc there are things that you CANNOT say, while in this bill it specifies what you HAVE to say. There is a big difference between prohibiting someone to say something and forcing a particular speech.
@@sandmand4036 Then you don’t understand the bill and its repercussions. It would establish compelled speech, and therefore set a precedent in the free west that we most definitely do not want.
Please do your research next time before willingly handing over your rights and freedom.

Wow! Dr. Jordan Peterson just displayed the most articulate use of spoken language that I have heard as long as I can remember! Awesome! Well spoken! I am very impressed by the wisdom of this man.
Peterson is a rare breed by today's standards, he can articulate his position and stand up for it in a reasonable way in an unreasonable and increasingly insane left leaning world.
Respect is earned.
God Bless Dr. Jordan B.Peterson.
This was before he became famous and he speaks in the same calm and intelligent manner no matter who's interviewing him or is in the audience.
Incredible man and so glad that he became famous so that he could help all of us who have been deeply impacted by his ideas, his books, his videos,
+ a fantastic example of how a good and noble man should act .
A lovely way of putting it. The concept of free will hinges on the freedom of mind and the expression of it.
The concept of free will is irrelevant. None of us have it. Do you plan your thoughts? No, things just pop into your head.
The concept of free will is quite the different topic than freedom of opportunity or liberalism in the context of a country's legislation&norms.

Dr. Peterson's peak!! I had the fortune to attend a few of his courses and his 2016-2017 lectures were the best!
You know, when a man as intelligent as Peterson, who has dedicated his life to understanding how people work, and how humans fall into disaster, is ignored when he warns that humans are in the process of falling into disaster. I think the officials who voted through this bill did so more out of malice than objective consideration of the facts.

Being courteous and polite when entering into a social interaction with new people should not be confused with the benefits that come with having earned any level of respect.
