People said I'd never make it as a writer. But for 13 years I persisted. Because I believed in myself enough more than anyone else did. I'm working with my agent now for publication next year. :)
It's hard work growing a tough skin but oh so worth it. You're not out to prove the critical people or haters wrong, you're out there to build a tribe of people who believe anything is possible and have a can do attitude to make serious change happen.
Well im only 12 but there is something that i did people told me was rubbish and without a positive outcome...i started reading harry potter and i was hooked so people ( my friends ) told me im wasting my time and its nonesense..i finished 6 books and now i know tons and tons of vocab and im the best reader of my class
Yara Karim Ha, that's actually pretty cool. I hope you keep it going. And don't ignore the many great books out there that have never been mainstream or made into movies! I highly respect readers.
Good solid advice Marie. My husband went into real estate after someone (a family member) told him he wouldn't make enough to buy groceries. Close to 800 properties and multi millions in sales later...he proved them wrong.
My family told me that I needed to "get married, have children and work only if you have to so you're being selfish for wanting to go to college". 5 years latter I'm taking my last class for my degree in psychology! I had to cut the people who did not support me out of my life which is very sad but I'm about to fulfill my dream of being the first person in my family to graduate from college and have a degree.
Hi Marie, responding to your question, I have accomplished something that people said was unrealistic which was my music career. When I was 20 or 21, I told my parents I was going to change the world and my parents responded with, "HA! You can't even take care of yourself!" (which is completely false because I make my own money and design my own life). So from that moment on, I stopped sharing 98% of my life with them, they're just too negative sometimes. So when I embarked on my music career, I didn't share anything unless they started asking what I was doing. Then it happened again, this time a bit milder. My father asked me what my plan is for my future (in his usual intimidating and degrading way) and I told him that I'm doing music. He couldn't understand for about 10 minutes and he kept on asking questions trying to clarify what I was saying. He doesn't have any knowledge about entertainment. It just didn't make sense to him. Until this day I can count the number of times I've talked to him about my music career. I don't even update him on achievements. It doesn't mean anything to him because he doesn't understand the value in musical achievements. So how I got through it was, I silently work on my craft and keep honing my skills without sharing much to anybody (it helps me focus too anyway) so the only thing they see are the great results. The audience doesn't care much about the process, they only care about the results, only the practitioners care about how their peers engage in the process.
I was told my dreams were "unrealistic" my entire life and unfortunately, listened. MY mistake. I'm now 60 and finally stopped listening to other people a few years ago. Paige has so much of life to live and with the global reach of the Internet, WOW! so much potential! I TOTALLY agree with Marie about surrounding yourself with positive people and limiting or eliminating negative nay-sayers from your life. I'd say that is the #1 place to start. All the best to you Paige! And Marie, your hair looks gorgeous darlin'!
I completed my B.A., my M.A., and my Ph.D. as a single mom. When I was accepted to Penn State's doctoral program, the guy I was dating flat out said, "Don't do it. You're going to fail." So I ended the relationship, sold my condo, packed everything into a UHaul, and drove across the country (I was living in Denver at the time). I completed my Ph.D. in record time (3 years) and received both teaching and research awards during my time there. F&^k him. I am no longer fulfilled in that career (and it has essentially been ripped away from me) but I know I can succeed even when others say I can't. To them I say, "good riddance."
what a inspiring history, I am med student in Dominican republic and push my butt out of my confort zone to reach 1 of my big goals take USMLE a pass with 240 score. Thank you for the inspiring have a great day
when i was young, my relatives told me i wouldnt amount to anything and so it would be useless to invest in me and send me to school. I told myself "watch me." and I subconsciously told myself "I will finish school by hook or by crook". And so the point is, instead of me taking it as a push down, i took as a challenge. Now I have reached more than I could ever imagine.
i am a newly certified personal trainer who was d told, several times "thats a really difficult certification.." yup i know. and that motivated me even more. get those goals ladies!!!!!
I grew up with a single mother in a tiny town in Denmark. Since I was 10 I told everyone I wanted to be a singer and travel the world. I would sing and dance my butt off for 3-4 hours a day after school and on the weekend. I would visualize my future very clearly, and by the time I was 17 I had a record deal with Sony Music and was the international fragrance model for the Lacoste fragrance "Touch of Pink" - that career lasted me 9 years until I wanted to settle down and have a family. Now I'm on to new adventures and dream of working from home and still being creative with RUclips videos and blogging in order to be close to my family. Thanks for the inspiring video!
yes. I bought two properties (one in London!) without being necessary a rich person (actually working casually on 0 hour contract). Saving money with determination was not easy (sacrificing other "luxuries"like buying clothes or going out with friends) but eventually I showed everyone how wrong they were when they said my dreams are crazy. Actually now I am saving for the deposit of my third property and I am 36 years old. I also managed to visit half of Europe (on budget) in the process. Don't listen to the negative people, they are there only to witness how you fail. Prove them wrong!
Congratulationd Vicki! Me too! I bought a foreclosure in NY & bought 2 exra properties (NJ & NC). Someone I thought was a good friend told me her husband said it was a "bad idea" to buy property in a town or state that I did not live in. Well . . . still going strong. At the end of the day, what others think about me is none of my business. All the best to you Vicki in your real estate ventures😊
Great video. I also want to add more my story about this topic. That is 8 years ago, where I live people hard to overcome exam for go into a big university, someone even who is member of my big family don't believe I can get into and they said together about that. But at that time, it is my compelling goal and I focus and efforts prepare myself then I over my exam to get into this university right now I gradual this more 2 years and work at a good office as well. And another story is no one believe I can run a business, but right now it is my passion and I have one business online that I help many people that I start learn about it and start my passion 4 years ago while I still studying in university while my friend only focus on studying and keep work with normal job. So from my experience don't bother about what people say or think on what you really want to do or who you want to become, let do it with passion and discipline then you will success.
I think y'all need to get your eyes checked. Pretty sure it's black and blue...or are my eyes deceiving me? 🤔 Though she's probably wearing white and gold flip flops (or "thongs" as we call them here in Aus)...
My "unrealistic success"...Years ago, as a kinesiology major headed for a physical therapy career I switched paths and went into advertising. This was "totally unrealistic" and took a relentless commitment. I got accepted into a prestigious training program and launched my new career. The mindsets of everyone involved had to shift to take a physiology-oriented person, me, and allow me to show them I could bring that sense of systems and psychology into this new area and apply it successfully. I had to go against the prevailing thought of who should be in that program. I'm glad I did. And there's always a new opportunity to go unrealistic again - to go higher.
That advice on entrepreneurship is spot on. I can totally relate. It doesn't matter if you want to have a business or not, we all need to have an entrepreneur mindset to get ahead in life. Loved this video! :)
I think it's great that Paige knows what she wants at 19 years old. I'm turning 18 in May, yet I am still completely unsure of what I want to do in the future. My parents want me to go to college; but they think that I'm going to continue studying nutrition just like how I am studying nutrition and sports in my polytechnic now. However I find fashion design quite interesting, but I am scared that I would not survive in the design industry; I don't really do a lot of art and am planning to learn sewing in my upcoming holidays.
people made fun of me specially my own cousins, they said I can never lose weight so I lost most than 40kgs in 2 years n now my cousins are fat n I don't make fun of that.
I love when Marie pointed out that a party planner needs to find someone that needs a party planned - fantastic advice! So simple but something we seem to overlook when we think of our dreams.
I’m turning 13 in May and I’ve decided that I want to be a teacher when I grow up. Before this, I wanted to be a doctor but even though it pays a lot, I wanted to have a job I would also enjoy myself. Teachers don’t get paid that much, but in the process of being a teacher, you will be making new friends every year. You can also learn more about responsibility. Though, I have always thought that other people’s opinion matters this video really helps!
I'm going to be honest here, I may have dropped a tiny tear at the end of this video. Thanks for posting this Q&A, as I am nineteen in the same situation. Lets go entrepreneurs! Thanks Marie, love your show.
OMG Marie!...this was so on point for me. And I am 55...not 19! I am always feeling like people are watching (judging me). In the midst of LMAO, I did pick up some great tips! Thanks & I ❤️ You!!
I love this! I'm also reminded about a famous line in the Will Smith move "The Pursuit of Happiness" about never lettingbother people's opinions interfere with your own dreams
thanks Marie & team for the wonderful Q&A. I too have been told many many times to stop dreaming and wake up to reality and I have always been a dreamer. I knew there was more to trying to make other people around you so you could have a pretty good life. In other words aim low. Well when I finally gathered enough strength and courage when I look back at those people who didn't want me to dream, they are still where there all those years ago. I believe we have movement available with our bodies to move and make dreams come alive. I am happy to say I have stopped listening to these people (and my xmas card list is now shorter) and joined B-School. thanks again xo
Marie, I love your videos. However! the casualness (* ya, we can make that a word) with which you said to just get rid of anyone negative made me do a "hold-up, WAIT" - a lot of times, those negative people ARE your parents. It seems you have amazing parents who have been really supportive of you while you explore and follow your passions. But for some others, mommy and daddy aren't so encouraging if you stray away from the straight and narrow. Has anyone else had that experience??
Thank you Marie. I am much older than Page, but I am also in a transition stage regarding my career, and I am struggling with feeling free from adults who care but judge and assume a lot.
Great video! I have finals this year and I'm trying to get a really high grade in order to study what I want in college. But I'm not so good in math & physics & failed multiple tests in them. & because of that every time I tell my classmates that I will get a great grade in finals they're all like "yeah sure whatever", they say it's impossible. so I'm giving it all I got & I'm studying hard af to prove them wrong
You r really inspiring Marie,I was really sad and depressed so decided to watch some vids of ur channel and it helped, your voice gives me hope and energy, thanks for having you in this world!
I've a similar situation in my life. I applied for the Psychology program in Ryerson and my entire family is against it. They want me to be a doctor. I'm not too sure what do I want to do with my life in terms of making a living. But I do know I need to "raise my inner child" and help myself grow emotionally, spiritually and psychologically by purusing a Bachelors in Psychology and my entire family is conspiring so that I don't attain this goal. I endured a lot of traumas in my life and I want to heal myself the proper way and take care of myself. And the only way I can do this is by studying Psychology. I've applied for the 2017-2018 Fall semester. Wish me luck, guys!
I created my Kettlebell Bombshell DVDs even though people were against me doing so. I reached number 26 on Amazons top 100 back in 2012 and made everyone around me who said it was a bad idea EAT their words! Now they can burn it off with my DVDs!! Lol
I got 1 yes from my father and that's all I really needed. I have been at it for about a year in a half. I have a lot to learn but when don't I lol I love what I do and I love people. Hard times come but they don't come to stay they come to pass. I can't be stopped if God's on my side. I'm truly happy in him. Great video Marie! :)
I had a lot of naysayers in my life so I always had to keep my dreams to myself. I wanted to write books for children's/young adult market, but people would always tell me that its risky or its an unattainable goal. I agree with Marie that there is no such thing as job security these days in an unstable economy and changing business market. I learned to believe in myself and to know what I want so I'm not weighed down by those who want to keep me down. I know my strength is in writing and I know I feel passionate about it and its something I can envision for myself.
When I was 20 I wanted to be an event planner. I talked to a few "planners" (people that did it on the side) that said you could never make money do it. Not too sure why I listed to them but I did. Five years later I finally started my company and now I couldn't be happier! I'm a few years in, have put my all into it and am so thrilled with the results I'm getting and the wonderful vendors and clients I get to work with! Paige, if you want it go for it! Do your research, maybe get an internship with a planner (such a good place to start!) and go for it!
Im still young but I know where I am going. I am only posting this as a reminder to look back on, when Ive finally made it, I can tell myself I knew I could do it all along.
Wow! This is such a biggie! When you have a dream, you just have to go for it, no matter what! The more I do what I want and the more action I take on my dreams, the more people criticize whatever they can... That has only made me stronger + more motivated to be transparent with my purpose and passion in life! As William James says, "You attract who you are"... So be who you are to the core, and don´t let anybody else affect how you want to do things... It is in this uniqueness, that the world needs that special gift that ONLY YOU HAVE... What Marie Forleo always says at the end of her MarieTV show! You´ve got it!
I just wrote my first book "My Year Off Men" and I have to say the response from men was questionable - but if I had allowed that doubt to creep in and quit I wouldn't have been able to reach all the amazing women that my journey has really inspired - and I only know this because I followed my dream to write my book and women love it. So go For your Dreams Ladies~ Good advice Marie!
Ricky Martin has been doing good on Australian The Voice and I saw him in concert in Melbourne and he totally rocked. It seems like he is happy in his life. Good to see a rock star not totally losing their way.
Yes! i learned spanish all by myself in few months and i moved to spain without any one i knew and i'm here two years already speaking spanish like a pro ;3
Loved the potato scene. Are you still getting baked? LOL!!! I'm hooked on your videos. You are so positive and energetic. You have nothing but great messages that are straight to the point, very useful, and done with a caring heart and just the right amount of funny. Thank you Marie for all that you do for us. Very appreciated :)
When people keep asking "Where are you going ot college? Do you know what career path to take yet? Have you thought about a major or degree?" I just shrug my sholders. I don't care about the small things like getting a degree. Instead, I focus on becoming a wife and mother. But first, I have to find a job, like working at Publix. My ultimate goal in life is to have a family of me and my husband and cute kids. But really, I want them to be successful adults. Great video!! :D
WhyDoPeopleRespond AwkwardlyToAwkwardness People... I know what you're thinking... You don't understand... I have a JOB, so that I can make mony and not waste time at college, waste my parent's money, and get a fucking degree that I have NO idea what to do with!!!! When you go to college, you will be broke. You'll have no money to SAVE up for the future!!! A degree is a small thing COMPAIRED to being a MOM and a wife... I did'nt say it was a small thing al- together. Some people can have families and earn a degree at the same time. I just like to do things one step at a time... I will have PLENTY of money to provide if I do it this way. 1. Get a fucking job. 2. Save up for college. But first, you need to KNOW what you want to be when you grow up. It goes on and on and I don't have time to talk about it. There's my explaination. There are no "right" or "wrong" ways of doing things... Everyone is on thier own journey. I'll make a video about this in the future, if I have to. I thought I already covered that in the "Future" and "I am Ashamed of this Generation!!!" videos.... One more thing: I have a fucking job at a fuckinf school as a fucking parapro that pays me fucking money. THERE!!! MY LIFE IS MY LIFE. ;)
WhyDoPeopleRespond AwkwardlyToAwkwardness There is NOTHING WRONG with living with your parents!! DX There is something wrong with you!!! PLUS, you learn NOTHING from fucking school!!!! You learn skills from working a fucking JOB!!!
WhyDoPeopleRespond AwkwardlyToAwkwardness While I have been learning how to work with kids and help other autistic people. There are so many options. Moving out can be terrifying. I'm not ready yet. I'm 19. I just graduated from high school.
When I first started dancing at age 15 my mom didn't really approve of this interest because she thought it would get in the way of studying and plus its extremely difficult to get a dance scholarship. Even though I had to listen to her because she's my mom I kept dancing because its what I do! And now I get paid for it teaching classes and performing. And I got to tell her "I told you so"
My high school counselor said that I would never make money as an archaeologist. I am now a successful field supervisor with a good salary and benefits. Most of my life people gave me negative feedback if I expressed a difficult goal I wanted to achieve. Now in my 40s I understand that these people were expressing their own fears.
I subscribed, this video almost made me cry. Some people have told me that I have unrealistic dreams. I want to be a singer. It's that passion and high I feel when I am singing and doing music. I am still in that phase but this video is just simply inspiring. Btw are you wearing hair extensions? Your hair is fabulous! and look at that waist!
I love your RUclips channel. I always wanted to work in the Theme Park industry. Ever since I was a little kid I always felt carnivals and amusement parks were fascinating. I grew up to become an independent filmmaker who was in a few film festivals. For the past two years I have looked for a key that will give me access to my dreams in the industry and film is it. This year I turn 28 years old and I am debuting a film about the history of theme parks. I still from time to time doubt myself as to whether or not I will work in the theme park industry but will never give up. Your videos are a constant inspiration. Thank you :)
I so needed this. I'm still struggling to get going. I'm working but not making money, sometimes I feel llike everyone's waiting for me to fail. I don't care what they think but I haven't reached my goals yet so sometimes it's hard to feel zealous about them.
i really like your videos so much!!!!!!!! your videos helped me to get over criticisms. i just love it how you give direct answers to questions and stay funny as well XD
Thank you, Marie!!! Great advice:)) I study in foreigin country, one of the best universities in Germany, just have started my first PR internship in enterntainment industry. Few years ago I met a lot of people who criticised me for dreams wich now are part of my reality.:)) Its so important to move on and move on with good attitude!
Surrounding yourself with positive people makes total sense, but.... What if being around positive people and inspirational people makes you feel WORSE about yourself, not more positive and motivated? Every time I hear about someone who accomplishes awesome things (especially if they have more struggles than I do, like a physical disability), this is what I think to myself: "I could never do that. I'm such a loser, cuz they have it worse than I do and they still do more important things than me. I can't even sleep and eat right half the time. How could I possibly accomplish anything worthwhile?" :/
Well, dont listen to that negative voice in your head!!! No matter how positive the people are around you, if you keep telling yourself that you can't, then you cant! You CAN. You gotta start believing in yourself!! ♡♡♡ :) :) :)
People said I'd never make it as a writer. But for 13 years I persisted. Because I believed in myself enough more than anyone else did.
I'm working with my agent now for publication next year. :)
Congratulations. Have you written your book?
I always get fired up when people told me I can't do something. My greatest successes came from me proving them wrong.
plot twist: they told you you can't kill people
👍
It's hard work growing a tough skin but oh so worth it. You're not out to prove the critical people or haters wrong, you're out there to build a tribe of people who believe anything is possible and have a can do attitude to make serious change happen.
Amazing. Hope have you on Brazil Natalie

There is truth to this. I play guitar. People don't care about how you make a melody they just want to hear it unless they are a musician themselves.

dont wonder what people think about you, but wonder about what you think of people
people made fun of me specially my own cousins, they said I can never lose weight so I lost most than 40kgs in 2 years n now my cousins are fat n I don't make fun of that.
I love when Marie pointed out that a party planner needs to find someone that needs a party planned - fantastic advice! So simple but something we seem to overlook when we think of our dreams.
" People who mind should not matter to you and ones who matter will never mind what you do in your life".......
Many videos later, still loving it, thank you for sharing your thoughts and answers.
Thank you for the part on continuing your education and stressing the importance of it
I’m turning 13 in May and I’ve decided that I want to be a teacher when I grow up.
The moment she opened her mouth I was like, "Wow, this girl is freaking Amazing"✨❤️
OMG Marie!...this was so on point for me. And I am 55...not 19! I am always feeling like people are watching (judging me). In the midst of LMAO, I did pick up some great tips! Thanks & I ❤️ You!!
The judging eyes bit! Lmao! That's totally me. I need to work on that.
"The world needs that special gift that only you have" man that got me
I love that dress and your raw outlook!!!
Wow... I love your videos. They are so motivating.
Lol
Marie, your videos give me life!!! Many thanks!
Hey Marie
Then go for it! No one can write a book the way you can. :)
That flying fudge! What the fudge?! Cracked me up!!!!
I really get caught up over what people think of me. I try my best to move on but it never works. But thanks to your videos it helps me out .
+WhyDoPeopleRespond AwkwardlyToAwkwardness haha
Lol Okay ...
You're a life-saver! THANKS A MILLION!! I dont know how many of your vid's i saw in a row all at once. your advice is crystal clear. thanks again.
Love it Marie!! Thank you for all that you do! :)
great video Marie! love it, stay true to yourself! so true!
Love love love this video Marie! Thanks a lot
Im still young but I know where I am going. I am only posting this as a reminder to look back on, when Ive finally made it, I can tell myself I knew I could do it all along.
Damn that American Italian accent when you said "and then you do another, another" 😬😂
Much love From Cape Town
Great advice and so funny, thanks !
I just love you!:) You're awesome. Much Love!
wow! very very professional! took about 30 seconds to realize you werent an ad.
Loved the Judging Eyes bit! Awesome as usual!
Love your advice & your professional way of dressing. You make me wanna go in my closet and re balance my look. Fun advice giver ; )
Ricky Martin has been doing good on Australian The Voice and I saw him in concert in Melbourne and he totally rocked. It seems like he is happy in his life. Good to see a rock star not totally losing their way.
love that white and gold dress :)
Oh stop! Lol 😂😂😂 not the dress!!
this was one of the best videos I've seen. thank you so much

came here by accident, and LOVED THE INTRO, and positivity can come in the form of MARIE thanks
Sunny-D Curles People get degrees AND have families all the time. It's not one or the other. What makes you think a degree is a "small thing"?
WhyDoPeopleRespond AwkwardlyToAwkwardness I'm still not listening.
And I got to tell her "I told you so"
Love how fun you are Marie! Thanks for the laughs as well as the great content.
My high school counselor said that I would never make money as an archaeologist. I am now a successful field supervisor with a good salary and benefits.
Most of my life people gave me negative feedback if I expressed a difficult goal I wanted to achieve. Now in my 40s I understand that these people were expressing their own fears.
Jesus Marie this is great, keep it up!

You are the greatest person. Thanks to help. ♥️
Something I did that seemed impossible at first was that I learned how to play the movie version of Let it Go on the piano when I was only 15.
Thank you :)
nice that she says : " there are no safe jobs anymore " makes it easier to go for the thing you love!

Great advice for everyone to hear! Thanks Marie! #YouRock
Thanks for sharing, Marie:)
