This movie came out in 1982. In 1983, I transitioned from active Marine Corps to the reserve. I needed a full time job to pay rent. 250+ employers in Albuquerque refused to hire me because I was a veteran. Finally, a hotel followed federal law and hired me. Desert Storm in 1991 transitioned both active and former military from monsters to heroes. During my time in the military we were required to wear civilian clothes off base, as if our haircuts and mannerisms weren't going to give us away.

Teasle is a Korean war veteran and in his mind the Korean war was totally forgotten about so he's extremely jealous of the Vietnam vets even though when they came home from Vietnam they were treated like straight up trash but that doesn't mean anything to Teasle

And its not hollywood, our guys did experience those exact types of things in Vietnam and every war before or since. Its a brilliant, accurate monologue, that sums up a lot of war vet’s experience after that war in particular.
Its a huge black eye on our country’s history then, and it didn’t begin to get better until the memorial wall was finally built. I recommend everyone who hasn’t visited The Wall to do so, in addition to all the good war memorials they have in DC. Very somber and oddly voyeristic to see obvious war vets and family/ friends of the fallen at these memorials, especially The Wall. Also all the trinkets, notes and flowers people leave at the memorials.
You want to see the monuments up close and I also was fascinated and saddened watching people search for people they new, but it always felt kinda wrong to me in a way, but I just couldn’t stop looking. Very conflicting experiences each time I was there. I never served, but was born in ‘70 and Sigon fell in ‘75 and had a lot of family friends that did growing up.

It was a really weird time. We lost that war, and all of the older soldiers from other wars kind of looked down on the Vietnam vets for losing.. the sixties hippies protested the soldiers bad... and when the soldiers got home they tried to fit in by growing their hair long, which pissed off the older generation even more...ptsd wasnt really an official thing yet... so they had no one to talk to... it was just so hard for the Vietnam vets.. in every aspect. Great reaction. 😊

@@ghoffmann821 I'm American (USA), but I see Vietnam War as a loss. USA was trying to prevent the communist takeover in the region & failed to do that. USA had to withdraw after 18 years because of domestic unrest and the financial burden of the war. At the very least, it was more of a loss than a win. Also 58,000 Americans lost their lives & 300,000 wounded, arguably for nothing since the outcome of the war was the communist takeover of Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia.

I'm way late but thank you for this reaction. This film means so much to me because my father faught in vietnam and at the woman at the beging says he was killed there and didn't know it. He inhaled agent orange gas and spent 7 years wasting away from the cancer it gave him. The worst thing for him wasn't just how people disrespected him but that the VA deserted him when it came to paying for his cancer treatments for years because he couldn't prove his cancer was from the war but as a young child when he got truly sick I never got to see it. I was staying with my grandparents towards the end and he always seemed so happy when I'd visit. I strive everyday to be someone he'd be proud of.

Lot of things in the movie but Will Teasle saying to book him for vagrants, resisting arrest, and carrying a concealed weapon.
The Sheriff did not stop him for vagrancy In fact, Rambo was going to buy a meal, so he had money and therefore was not vagrant. The Sherriff did not know if Rambo had a debit card linked to an account with thousands. To "arrest" him for a crime he had no proof or suspicion that he was guilty.
Second charge: Resisting arrest. You can not resist an arrest that is not legal.
Third charge: Concealed weapon. He did not ask if Rambo had a permit to carry it concealed. On top of that, his discovery of the knife was found through an illegal search and seisure.

No. When he comes out the mine, he sees the army mobilized to capture him. His training says if you run they will catch you. You have to remove their ability to track you before you can run.
Destroy their fuel dump, their ammo dump and their HQ. Then run.

The book was set in Kentucky and had a different end to the movie. The movie was shot in and an around Hope British Columbia from Nov 16, 1981 - Apr 16, 1982. Stallone spent the Canadian winter in a t-shirt and piece of rotten canvas found by the film crew during the movie's production, he still has the canvas his possession to this very day. The author of the book David Morrell stated that he prefers this film over his novel. One main difference between the novel and book is the amount of people killed by Rambo. A "Green Berets" is a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces (somewhat similar to the "Seals" of the U.S. Navy). Green Berets often work closely with the CIA while deployed on foreign soil. A congressional Medal of Honor is the highest awarded military decoration in the U.S. It's awarded for acts of valor during combat against an American enemy, and more often than not you have to be killed in that action to receive it. During the Vietnam War (roughly 1965 to 1975) only about 200 Medals of Honor were awarded, so you're supposed to believe John Rambo is a true baddie.

Yea alot of Vietnam vets, when they got back they were spit on and treated like shit as Rambo states in the end and that's why in the beginning the sheriff says you're asking for alot of trouble wearing that jacket around here as it was part of Rambos Vietnam uniform and had the Flag Patch. Sad but true facts are some soldiers DID do horrible shit over there but not all but a few bad apples spoils the bushel as they say. Great reaction!!!

    Black Rain (1989)
It's not popular and I don't understand why but for me it's Ridley Scott's best film.

    Very good reaction Verdy. Thanks.
This movie is based more on the return of the troops to the country and how they were rejected on their return and the post-traumatic stress they had upon returning. The following ones are a little more focused on the action and less on the post-war story.
To see a little more and better the horrors of that war, I recommend Apocalypse Now, Platoon and Full Metal Jacket.

First Blood is a drama, not much an action movie, this is a film with a deep meaning on how the USA goverment and military failed to vietnam vets in every possible way

A classic and that ending tho... Still think it's best movie Sylvester Stallone ever made, even though it's old. His "Demolition Man" movie with Sandra Bullock is a great too!

Like most movies this is exaggerated and not really how things were, it's meant to portray how bad things might get. I'm old so I served after Vietnam but before this movie came out. Coincidentally I worked as a small town cop shortly after this movie came out. We even used the same type of cop cars. I knew some terrible cops but none would have done anything like this. Btw the medal of honor is the highest decoration for any service not just Army. About the knife, this movie was popular and they reproduced cheap versions of that knife in the millions probably. For years you could buy them at flea markets for a couple of dollars

A little background that will help you put the plot into perspective. The Vietnam war was the first war in history the media was given access to directly. As a result it was the first war in which the general public back home got to hear from the media first hand accounts of a lot of the stuff that actually happens during a war. Before Vietnam, the media largely romanticized war with the bad stuff being reduced to statistics and number. As a result, a large resistance to the war in Vietnam grew with the general population with people protesting the war effort and from this movement there grew some very hateful sometimes even violent opinions directed toward anyone or anything connected to the war. When soldiers came home from Vietnam not only did they have to deal with all the normal problems that soldiers of the past had to deal with such as troubles adjusting to civilian life and P.T.S.D., they also had to deal with a very hostile public opinion. They were called baby killers to their faces because the media had reported that US soldiers were killing children. What the media failed to report was that the North Vietnamese were USING children to attack soldiers by strapping bombs to them and sending them into camps disguised as local children and so the soldiers had no choice. These men fought for their country witnessed horrors no human being should ever be forced to witness and came back home to be literally spit on and hated. I had two uncles who fought in Vietnam and when they got home friends that they'd had since grade school would refuse to even speak to them when passing in the street. The Green Beret are a special forces unit within the US Army. They're the best of the best of what the Army has to offer. The Congressional Medal of Honor that's mentioned in the film is the highest honor possible given to those who perform above and beyond the call of duty. To put this is perspective, in the US military any time you meet someone of a higher rank than you, you are required to salute that person to show respect to their higher rank. Then that person in turn sautes back. Those who have been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor must be saluted by the Us President.
