I. Cannot. Believe. That. Album. Is. 40. Years. Old! I remember buying it when it first came out and seeing the movie in Montreal, Canada that same summer.
I was 19 in 1984. Been a Prince fan since 78. Beautiful time period for music and Prince was the best. These kids today don't have a clue what music is.
Such a great album. And I was into totally different genres of music, but you just couldn’t deny the quality of the production and the song writing skills of Prince. And the memories, o man! I will never forget being in a discotheque, looking in the eyes of Anne, the love of my life. Her eyes staring into mine. They played Prince, loud. And then I saw her lips move, whispering along to the music, still looking deep into my eyes, saying “I will die for you…” My heart skipped a couple of beats. ❤❤❤ O, Anne 🥹
It's definitely a shame. He was 57, so he had some good years left, but I wouldn't say it was early in his life when we lost him. Prince's death was one of those where I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard. He was one of the greats.
Prince's music is not my thing, I've never been a fan. However, I have all the respect in the world for him. I really enjoy learning about his life, how he worked and what he accomplished. His talents are unreal, next level stuff. I have a fascination for Prince despite not having a love for his music.
Prince's first and really only true Rock album. He dabbled in Rock/New Wave/Alternative after but he took no prisoners on this record. He was the only Black mainstream artist who could've pulled it off in that era. A true musical savant and not a bad guitarist.
@@jensontagg I stand corrected. That was a mostly rock oriented record albeit out of print for a long time from 96. Prince bashed it out really quickly to get out of contractual obligations with Warner. DIg U Dead is a fav for me. Otherwise, not hard to figure out why Prince would rather the world forget about that release.
@@PedroLopezBeanEater Name another mainstream black artist from the 80s who had the talent, vision and diverse enough musical palette to create a Purple Rain. Not just a perfunctory track ala Michael Jackson in an R&B album but an entire record. I'm sure many would've loved to have tried as black musicians had better musical chops than most but Prince was just cut from a different clothe. Purple Rain would've bombed if you had given that material to someone else. In that period, he definitely had an axe to grind and didn't want to be pigeonholed as an artist.
Bobby, he has never really fully as far as my knowledge of being a 40+ prince fan, really gotten technical in in terms of exactly what the set up was. But from what I’ve gathered, it appears modified where they use early forms of triggers before triggers became the thing. Bruce Forat may have also modified the Linn drum machines. He was an engineer working with Roger on the first machines and knows them very well, but I remember speaking with Bruce and he said that they added midi capabilities to the machine so the pads on the Simmons drums Would trigger sounds IN theLM-1. There’s a lot more details I could go into but prince was doing innovative stuff at the time and later on I did more innovations in terms of the drums, recording and gear tech.
He definitely used the Fairlight on other 80's records (certainly Sign O The Times), but I do not believe he had access to that instrument on Purple Rain. Sunset Sound may have acquired or rented one in 1986, as it features prominently on his 1987 output. Or it's possible another LA studio (The Complex) had access to it when Wendy and Lisa did overdubs on "Strange Relationship" (they did further overdubs on that song at Sunset Sound in 1986). Lisa also played a Fairlight on the Parade Tour in 1986 (her final tour with The Revolution). Also, I believe a bass part was recorded for When Doves Cry, but it was muted on the final mix.
About Prince's Hohner Madcat, you got a couple of details wrong. - Look up the footage of the "Dirty mind" tour, and you'll see that the guitar was already fitted with the wireless even back then. Which would also mean that the dummy coil had been fit back then. So those mods were not done especially for the "Purple Rain" tour. - Regarding it being "The best telecaster ever", according to his crew and Prince himself, who regarded it a "Cheap toy" in "Dirty Mind era" interviews, those mods were NEEDED, since its stock pickups hummed and screeched like crazy. - Famed guitar builder Roger Sadowsky was hired to make five more copies of the Hohner, since the Madcat had been discontinued, and given Prince's penchant to chuck his guitar around, those back-ups were badly needed. Prince's crew told Sadowsky to make them "First class instruments" since the Hohner was such a headache. - And that built in wireless also added a lot of gain to its sound.
Thanks for the video! I have never seen this pic (Apollonia on Prince´s bike before. (at 7:29) But i always wondered if the pic (Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Prince) is real or faked.( 7:43) Now even Quincy Jones has died. What a sad loss for the music world.RIP!
Always enjoy the details included such as the equipment the artists used. Though i missed what Wendy's recording rig consisted of besides a 12 string Rickenbacker
@mixingmasteringonline actually there are those coliseum boogies. They might have 180w, but I'm not sure. But they would have 8 power tubes or something.... 😂
The coliseum heads were high power versions running at 180w. John Sykes used them, as did the guy who jumped in and covered guitar for Ozzy when Randy died, eh, Brad Gillis.
With a snarky stupid comment like that , you must've eclipsed Prince several times over with your accomplishments! And I for one can't wait to hear any of them here!
1:20: This is basically a mental disorder with potential serious health issues, that eventually were an important factor in Prince’s u tragic unnatural and preventable death. Could have been related to suppressing psychological issues by drowning himself in work (do called ‘workaholic’ syndrome). But I also wouldn’t be surprised if Prince’ suffered from a form of Asperger syndrome, as many very intelligent, successful, but socially difficult people.
Many super creative people go on binges to get their inspiration out. It most likely has nothing to do with a “mental disorder.” I’m not a fan of pop psychology, it’s just pure speculation.
"Fresh tape" and "incredible stamina" is a euphemism for "more drugs" in the world of Prince. He wasn't a creative superhuman who didn't need sleep. He was addicted to drugs. Fun record though.
I’m gonna respectfully disagree with you! If anybody really followed the career Prince he was not a person that took drugs. He lived a healthy life. He only started using the opioids once he had issues with his hip. So to try to paint him as some type of drug addict is totally false. !!
People are something. Always trying to cut down another. Prince was genius. FULL STOP. What masterpieces have you created. Yeah I thought so. You can fk off in your mom’s basement.
I recently went back and listened to that album. The production on that album is terrible. It definitely sounds like it was done in someone's basement By someone who was just learning to record.
Frank Zappa said in an interview that when he listened to Prince he heard a musician and not a record company 😅
Perfeitas as palavras do mestre Zappa

*Purple Rain* might not be my favorite Prince album, but it is the one I most easily connect with.

Definitely not a rock album anymore than Lovesexy, Sign, or Graffiti Bridge.
I guess you’re being sarcastic about the “not a bad guitarist” line. But you’re wrong about the “only mainstream black…” that could pull it off.

I'm sure I'm not alone, but I'm glad the Stevie Nicks/country version of the song didn't go ahead. I love Stevie Nicks, but not on Purple Rain! 😅
Pretty sure he got the Dr to play the string solo at the end of Doves. Prince played everything else
nah, that's all Prince. Dr played a mean solo on "Head" from the Dirty Mind album though.
Great Album, interesting video, but a boogie mk2 doesn't have 180 watts... Depending on the power amp configuration maximum of 100w... 😉
Thank you! I did think that but wondered if he had done super modded version. Seemed to be lots of conflicting info about his amps.

Should have named it Purple Rinse

3:43 I think it would have been a wireless transmitter built into the guitar, not a wireless receiver.
True! 😅
Please do The Joshua Tree by U2.
It’s coming soon👍
Why show Strat pickups when you’re talking about a Tele? 🫣
PRINCE OVER MICHAEL JACKSON.............. THERE I SAID IT
Folks in the same studio building said you weren’t allowed to look at him. What a sad little baby.

Probably was on the spectrum which got too self indulgent with the money. His name didn’t help
Tabloid type comments died in 1984
There was nobody in rock who could touch prince👍🌈
Sunset Sound covered this properly already with the actual engineers not speculation.
