*SEAN CONNERY:* _"I was the first James Bond."_
*BARRY NELSON:* _"Hold my Vodka Martini..."_
"Aren't you the fellow who was shot?"
"No I'm the fellow who was missed!"
Dry. Love it.
Many years ago, I put together a "James Bond trivia contest" for my office newsletter. One of the questions was; "Which of the following actors did NOT play James Bond; George Lazenby, David Niven, Barry Nelson, Peter Sellers?" I had people stopping me in the halls saying NONE of them played James Bond! It was great!
I would've won. I was banned by a radio station for winning Bond trivia questions 5 times in a row.
technically Peter Sellers played Evelyn Tremble, not James Bond.
@@ElkSkin - That was the answer. I miss that job.

Only the few lucky ones were able to witness this masterpiece back in the 50s in colour.
Probably all those lucky ones are dead now.
@@qadoshezkaton Most likely. But I think few survivors might still be alive, like in their 90s or 80s of age
They probably wouldn't remember it though @@kadad5288

The real cool thing about this version is you actually learn how baccarat is played😃👍
How true ! Til now I never knew how the game worked....though of course seen it played in so many films & TV programs over the years.
@@jubalcalif9100 basically it’s like blackjack, but you must get to 9 instead of 21😊
Peter Lorre as a bond nemesis! Classic cinema candy!!
Indubitably !
A perfect Le Chiffre indeed
So with hind sight it is easy to say that an American Bond does not work!! I knew Barry in his later years. Always a gentleman with a friendly smile for all. He told me he considered Spencer Tracy the best all time actor and how special his role in "A Guy Named Joe" with Tracy was to him. Great to see him in this first James Bond!!
I used to have this rare gem on VHS i bought new back in the 90's & I watched it all the time. Barry Nelson was the first James Bond & maybe even the best & Michael Pate as Clarence Leiter was superb & there was no better villain than the great Peter Lorre. It exceeds the later film versions because it was cutting edge early live TV & a pioneer giving it added significance.
It's such a novelty to have Barry Nelson as the original James Bond. What a great morsel for trivia. Linda Christian, Peter Lorre, and Michael Pate performed their roles as if this were a feature film! Thoroughly enjoyed this!
There's a bit of Reacher in Barry Nelson as Bond
@@jeansenn7536 I found this on VHS in the early 90's because of Peter Lorre he makes it worth watching. He was so distinctive there's never been an actor like him since. I never heard of Barry Nelson so I just accepted him in the iconic role. Then again I never got into James Bond & I never watched the Bond films when it was later franchised. So Barry Nelson as Bond works as long as he's not compared to the other actors like Sean Connary etc. An American James Bond was ok by me & probably for most TV audiences in 1954.
Sit back and enjoy it for what it is. Not what you think it should be.
All of you who are putting this down have no concept or knowledge of the show Climax! It was live performance 1 hour show. Which was actually a vehicle to showcase Chrysler cars. The commercial spots are shows unto themselves. The fact that they got in guest actors who had to memorize, rehearse and perform live in what ever script Chrysler handed them is a miracle they got any of it right.
So don't be to critical of the era, the actors or their performances. This was to sell American cars to Americans. The show was almost an after thought. One more thing, these shows were stepping stones to what was modern tv before cable tv came in and took over.
THANKS for uploading for us to enjoy ! A great trivia question is "Who was the first James Bond ?" Of course, most people reply "Sean Connery". But this episode of TV's "Climax !" proves it was actually Barry Nelson.
The second James Bond was the British-South African TV presenter Bob Holness. He played Bond in the 1950s radio adaptation of "Moonraker."
James Bond was later fired from the Secret Service and then became hotel manager of the Overlook Hotel in Colorado.
kurokawa kokujin akihito!
“All work and no play makes Jimmy Bond a dull boy.”
Just finished reading the novel and I really enjoyed this. I knew about this production for years but I never got around to watching it. Sure, there are some huge differences from the novel but as an adaptation I can respect what the producers created here. Thanks for uploading.
thanks a lot for posting...made me win a 100£ bet with my buddy who had never heard of such a JB production.
Always love putting this one on when i'm in a Casablanca mood but want Bond.
Its actually pretty good considering it was done live.
Part of the "charm" of live television was that the audience always knew things could go terribly wrong very quickly. The actors production staff and crew were putting themselves on the line for the viewers. Jackie Gleason broke his leg on live TV. Nanette Fabray was almost killed by a falling light just after Sid Caesar's show cut to a break, and was rushed to the hospital, obviously unable to finish the show. There were numerous less spectacular incidents of falling sets, prop failure, microphone shadows, missed cues, mysterious noises off camera, and flubbed lines. And remember, there were cameras and cables everywhere. If a grip didn't move a cable in time, the actors may be toast. Just getting through a live tv play was something of an accomplishment. And some directors, obviously adrenaline junkies, pushed the limits of what was possible on live tv.
Peter Lorre, unsurprisingly, makes for a very menacing and debonair Le Chiffre. It's unfortunate he died so relatively young; just think how memorable he would've been playing Dr. No or Bloofeld opposite Sean Connery in the Eon films!
An admirable adaptation of the novel even if Bond and Leiter's nationalities were switched to how they were in the novel. The biggest problem is that Barry Nelson often sounds like Maxwell Smart from Get Smart. Still, a great hour of Live television entertainment.
LMAO!! He does sound like Maxwell Smart, doesn't he? I couldn't figure out why I was giggling so much, but that's it.
Or Inspector Gadget. 🤷🏻♂️
Whatever else you say about this - Peter Lorre is a Bond villain.
Live television has its charms.
Thank you for keeping this episode up I really like to watch it every once in a while 👍
this is the first james bond film...i love this bond film in 1954..
I like this version especially that it's a sort of pioneer..I even like the spoofs and spin-offs such as OPERATIONKID BROTHER starring Neil Connery, Adolfo Celi, Bernard, Lee, Lois Maxwell
This really isn't bad. People only hate it because they don't enjoy the old black and white story driven films and because Nelson doesn't fit what people want out of Bond. You have to remember: this was a smaller TV production done live. It wasn't when EON tried to make Bond a huge franchise with Dr. No, and since Bond wasn't an established, respected franchise, both the production as well as Nelson's performance aren't trying to run in that category. Its a classic film with some great history behind it.
And you have to admit that Peter Lorre is one of the better Bond villains is you count the unofficial films.
Well no the big controversy about Nelson is that he's an American actor portraying a British spy. How would you feel if Superman was played by Sean Connery? Lol
They changed Bond from an MI6 agent into a CIA agent as explained in the film, while Felix, or Clearance in this case, is now the MI6 man. I do understand it sucks that they didn't stay true to the novel in that regard, but it doesn't really ruin the film either. I do personally think Nelson and the guy playing Leiter should have switched rolls, as Leiter's actor would make a great Bond. I still do lime leiter and Nelson's characters in here, though.
I like this better than the 2006 or the spoof 1967 versions of Casino Royale. I have no idea how the fuck they got their hands on the copyrights since it takes like 70 years to clear copyrights (according to my communications professor). And Fleming wrote Casino Royale in 1952 and passed in 1964.
Craig's Casino Royale is one of if not the best film in he franchise. The 60s spoof is horrid, not one redeeming quality besides the theme song. Austin Powers it's not. This one seems dry, down to earth, and just like classic entertainment. I just prefer the time and style of filmmaking better too.
Who would have known none other than Barry Nelson, aka Stuart Ullman was the original American Jimmy Bond. 😃🇺🇸
If we all haven't seen the big budget versions of Bond this would be a very amusing story in the days form early TV.
Indeed !
Peter Lorre Star of this episode. Better than other actors even Bond. I have never seen climax before but nicely paced.
Well said and well put. Mr Lorre does indeed give the best performance.
Better than I expected. Linda Christian was gorgeous!
True to the book. Nice to see a James Bond without all the hollywood hype that was never meant to be.
Except Bond films aren't made in Hollywood!
@@porflepopnecker4376 They're executive produced and funded by the Hollywood studios MGM, Sony and No Time to Die, by Universal.
@@porflepopnecker4376 To me the problem isnt the industry, its whether you have good or bad directors. Albert Broccoli i think did a great job on Bond legacy of quality
Peter Lorre made this worth watching!
I certainly have a notion to second THAT emotion !
Agree he's the reason I bought this on VHS in the 90's. Peter Lorre is hard to top.
Peter Lorre. Yess. Made my day. ;D
That's the wonderful Australian actor, producer and writer; Michael Pate as Clarence Leiter.
he would probably have done a good job as Bond - Australian audiences will remember him as the motorcycle riding policeman on Matlock Police
Yes, he had quite a varied but consistent Hollywood career mainly playing heavies and ethnic types such as Indians in many westerns. He returned to Australia in the 70's playing more substantial roles in the Renaissance of Australian movie and tv drama. He had also appeared in a few Australian movies in the 40's before heading off to Hollywood in the 50's where he could actually make a decent living compared to the limited opportunities in Australia at the time. Other Australians heading os at the same time included Ron Randall, Rod Taylor and Peter Finch.
"Kinoscope" is how this was recorded in those days!
Dall'Italia, Grazie mille!! 🇮🇹🍝☺
not many people relise this film actually exists, I have never seen it on TV.
Huh?
@@ToniHunterOne This episode was lost for decades.
@@chubbycatfish4573 Thank you. The OPs syntax through me. To Ronald McDonald: many of these old shows were filmed before live audiences to get natural reactions. Thankfully while the live performance was happening, the studio still made a recording of it. Which could explain the poor quality of the grainy film and why you might not have seen this one on TV. This film was probably archived and "forgotten".
the show aired in 1954 - I found a copy on DVD years ago Fleming was booked to create a TV series of about 30 episodes of JB stories but sadly the negotiations were never completely worked out
I am Algerian and i love james bond series...
Well, the nationality flip was a suprise! Well done.
This is not actually a film per se, but an epidode of a television show called "climax" it was an anthology series so each episode had a different cast and story, like the twilight zone or alfred hitchcock presents.
The Road To Bond Audiobook brought me here.. wow
You can see the cinematic influence this has on 007 films
Barry Fuckin Nelson
Bond looks like JOHN F KENNEDY
Ain’t it weird how Barry Nelson went on to be a bit part in The Shining? I would’ve loved to see Jack Nicholson as a Bond villain.
Where's the scene with the defibrillator?
bond history actor 1.barry nelson 2.sean connery 3.david neven 4.george lazinby 5.roger moore 6.timoty dalton 7.pierce brosnan 8.daniel craig and 9 new actor james bond after daneil craig...
What is the piece of classical music playing from frame at 12.32 to frame 15.50? If you know, please oblige me with the knowledge. Thank you kindly.
+Anna; Chopin? Not sure of the piece. Could be "Aria" nocturne in E flat. Tune to solfeggio or it will not emot correctly. Please let me know if it was helpful.
Good Luck, Anna.
Definitely chopin...unsure of the piece. As I'm writing and listening bond just confirmed chopin.
Awesome! peter lorre is Great!
So this was live TV ? It’s pretty mindblowing to see that TV shows could be played like theater ? I’m still quite intrigued on that, some lines sound like they were rerecorded postprod.
Hi David 🍕you checkout the “live” series called “Suspense” that we post every other week 🍕
At the beginning was that an actual gunshot? With a studio audience screaming?
This skit follows closely to the book besides 'Clarence Leiter' instead of Felix; and 'Valerie Mathis' as Vesper Lynd
And that they make him American.........
And now they want to make him a black woman.
Ngl i know its because of the budget and the cast, but this seems more like a Film Noir B-movie than James Bond.
How much white noise you want...all of it.
This is pretty good, it's much much better than moonraker. And bearing in mind it's an hour long it's quite close to the novel. I don't think Bond being American is so bad, but being called Jimmy doesn't seem right
Podrías subirla en español o con subtítulos español gracias
That is not an elevator. It's a rocket ship. Did you see how fast it went up six floors. Yeesh!
This skit is the reason why Eon Productions couldn't start the franchise with Casino Royale, instead of course they started with Dr. No instead...
And is also why Charles k Feldman made a spoof of casino royale without getting sued because he owned the rights
@@wik8501 You mean, the one with David Niven?
@@kadad5288 Yes
me gustaria saber si la puede subir la pelicula en español
I miss the scene where a Russian agent carves a Cyrillic letter on the back of James Bond's hand.
Man I thought Sean was like first but it was Barry so I guess they both are dead now
Title needs to be changed to 'Jimmy Bond'
Ways to make this funnier: First at the 16:23 mark, the elevator man opens the door and says, "well that was quick." Second, at the 20:56 mark Felix Leiter hands the money to the casino employee, to hold for Bond, and he proceeds to run out the front door.
I’m sure this guy Nelson was a nice guy but better suited for the role of the neighborhood milkman.
A comment that Barry Nelson played the first James Bond, on TV's CLIMAX series in the '50's, prompted another to give us this link, showing Barry in that role:
ruclips.net/video/ztsXWp0nj2c/видео.html
I clicked on it, and a minute or so into the clip, Barry makes his first appearance, as he steps out of CASINO ROYALE.
In that scene, for the first few seconds, he gives a striking resemblance to John F. Kennedy.
Well, perhaps it was my mind playing tricks with me, for a few minutes earlier I had just read that James Bond was an unknown in the US until John Kennedy listed "From Russia, With Love" as one of his 10 favourite books, in a 1961 LIFE article, some six years after TV's CLIMAX episode.
Or could it be that the US President's vanity, having seen Barry in the CLIMAX episode, drove him to mention James Bond?.......although in a different novel.
Xcxx
Linda Christian was beautiful.
She was no Hope Emerson (hubba hubba!), but Ms Christian was indeed one lovely lady.
American Spy?
This is the best Bond movie ever made and Barry Nelson is the best Bond actor ever!
😐
No No No This Is On Of The Worst
Gotta love a good sh*t stir
I think so too Barry Nelson was a good Bond & the first.
😈
Always bet with the house in baccarat
Scotch? Jimmy? huh? lol
Foreshadowing...
Leiter is cooler than Bond in this movie for some reason. And Le Chiffre is great.
It doesn't work with an American Bond. Lorre is good as usual and Christian is fine.
It totally works.
That Felix character doesn't sound British.☕🍕

first comment yes
Trust Americans to make to him American.
They cast a Hungarian as an Albanian and an Australian as a Brit, too. So what?
@@porflepopnecker4376 So what nothing. He's not talking about the actors nationality, he's talking about the characters. Bond is supposed to be English, (He didn't become Scottish till the publication of On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1963 - this is 1954) Leiter is supposed to be American and Le Chiffre is supposed to be Prussian. They only made him Albanian in the 2006 film.
When it comes to casting the actors nationality is irrelevant. An Australian can play a Brit and a Hungarian can play Prussian.
So there.
That adaptation is not the official canon
lead guy looks like JFK. who calls bond Jimmy? Peter Lorre is the only reason to watch this annoying little TV movie.
What an annoying little comment!
@@porflepopnecker4376 Ha ! Touche !
Horribly miscast in retrospect. Peter Lorre has the right look & demeanour for the villain despite horrible line delivery (probably because it was filmed live) but Nelson comes across as a hamster faced dork.

This movie was so boring. Thank god for Sean Connery and the series after it
