Hey all. It probably looks like I've been on hiatus for the past couple months, but I've actually been working the entire time, just on more complicated videos than before! This Dionysus video was actually done to give myself a break from a pretty long video I've been making. I'm grateful that my channel has maintained pretty stable viewership, even while I've been inactive for so long. Thanks so much to all of you! If you want sporadic updates on what I'm working on, feel free to join my Patreon!
2 hour long movie of the history of mythology?? if its not at least 3 hours im unsubbing. because we all are expecting a 4 hour long video at least with perfect information and not a signle mistake in the whole 5 hour video youve been working on.
Ha! True ...this kinda reminded me of how in Taino Myth the one in charge of fighting the Storm God is the God of Yuccas (kinda like a potato but different)
I think there's a bit more going on here, a theory or motif called the open secret, in a which a God passes for human and no one knows that there's a God among them, but only one person is like, something is not right here, these motifs are usually filled with signs, damnation and salvation and exaltation. In this case the madman recognizes the signs and speaks aloud and no one believes him, yet when the signs become impossible to ignore it is the crew that becomes damned and the madman who is saved. A similar scene occurs with Demeter when she passes as an old hag and people insult her. And similar motifs are found in Christianity within the Gospels.
"He turned himself into a lion! Lion Dionysus! Scariest thing I have ever seen. But then he did something funny by turning my crewmates into dolphins. Dolphin sailors! Funniest thing I have ever seen." -The Helmsman, probably.
You should do a video on the story on the one time Zeus's wife Hera almost left him which, funny enough, made him seriously panic on the thought of her leaving him
@@lawlessappleking2101 Lol, you right. “Shiiiii- I heard Zeus so awful the goddess of MARRIAGE divorced him! 🫨” God, the drama that would be conceived from that. 🤣
I am so glad that Dionysus spared the pirate helmsman after the rest of the crew paid for their misdeeds and let him off the hook since he fully understood that they messed with the wrong god.
Jake's Dionysos design is wonderful! Everyone's favorite long-haired, androgynous Pretty Boi™ with a proclivity for purple-colored _chiton/himation_ and _chlamys._
I love your own narrations, but I think you might have something special with this format as well - animations in your style to ancient texts. Love the gorgon sail, I don’t know if sailors actually used sails like this but I love the idea that they could have.
Now, what a coincidence to have uploaded this on (what I have estimated as, according to an online Attic calendar) the first day of the Anthesteria festival! Very well-made and fun take on a hymn to the ivy-crowned, roaring, wild god himself 🍇🍷💖
Just a new format I'm trying out. If I use it again, it'll probably only be for stuff I've already covered before, or stuff that's too short to easily paraphrase .
Your animations keep getting better and better, I can see all the hard work you've put into these videos, I've been enjoying rewatching your older ones and I always get excited when you upload a new video ❤️
This format is very fun! I feel loke it would work with telling original versions of fairy tales if you ever decide to dip your toes into those. Can't wait to see what else you've been working on!
I can't believe how much you've improved recently! If this were made a couple years ago or so, the crew members probably would've looked basically the same, and Dionysus would have his usual appearance. But instead, you gave really unique designs to each character and their expressions throughout the video! Amazing!
This was great!! The first time I read about Dionysus was in a copy of Bulfinch's Mythology that my parents gifted me in 1990. I used to read the stories and record it with my old cassette rec. Recently I found another copy of Bulfinch's in a used bookstore and it was a print from 1979! I snagged it. It smells like history and mythos! Cheers and happy storytelling! 🍵
I love your original style of videos...But this was amazing, I think everyone would be happy if we had more videos like this. (I don't know what was better, your voice and Dionísio's design.)
Dionysus sounds pretty chill compared to most of the other gods. Even sparing the helmsmen. The others would have probably maimed him as a warning to mortals.
Ramses: oh come on Dionysus why did you turn the water to wine do it in Greece!! Moses: actually god turned it into blood and Dionysus didn't Ramses: oh ergm Dionysus can you make our baths wine?
This was freaking amazing! I was beginning to wonder where you were and what you were up to, but now I see why you've been gone for so long! You were bringing us this masterpiece of a video! You did so good! :D Edit: I just noticed in your pinned comment that this was actually made to give you a break from an even LONGER video!? Dang, I can't wait to see it when it's done! :O
Oh I looove this. The new more detailed characters and animations. It’s like an animated storybook. I don’t know if it’ll make it easier or harder but I would b cool if the text scrolled across the screen like subtitles. ❤❤

Decided I'm calling you Doubs now. Let's make it a thing you guys/ya'll. Doubs, please keep on keeping on!
Great video Doubs I really like this format!
Moral of the story: The god of wine and partying is still a god and he CAN fold you like a lawn chair in some way
And turn people into dolphins, apparently.
im terribly sorry for this terrible terrifying reply but the GYATT of wine
He might be a god of wine, but it's worth remembering his punk roots as not only that but a god of Death and Madness

@@BIBI_DOESSTUFF I’m not mad I’m just disappointed
I love how Dionysus was just willingly going along with their little charade when at any time he could’ve broken loose and killed all of them.

I love Dionysus' design in this, can't wait for him to become a perpetually drunk caveman.
God I could wait, I could wait quite a lot of time actually
I like this design more than the old one. It makes him look more androgynous, as Dionysus is supposed to be Genderfluid
