    Best way to get to the root of any pain or discomfort in the body is, while you're experiencing pain, ask yourself "How does this make me feel?", put an emotional word on it. Once you come up with the emotion, anger, frustration, etc. realize that emotion was there long before the pain showed up. That emotion had to get loud enough to get your attention. Pain is just an "Indicator" of how you've been feeling.

    Thank you! I was a Sarno patient in 1986. Went to the two lectures and spoke with him on the phone many times. I have helped many people over the years, turning them on to Dr. Sarno. But now, all these years later, I am battling pain again. I got side lined and went to a neurologist. The only benefit was getting an mri to establish no major issues. I am trying to get back to a Sarno frame of mind. I know this is TMS. My home was flooded from hurricane Irma and, for the past year, has caused tremendous stress and financial hard aches. Your video is my start to conquer this distraction of TMS. I feel watching your video is like a renewing of my tms vows. Thanks again. Sorry for the long post, but I needed to get it out there to start the ball rolling again.

      Hi- read his book again. You got this !! I saw Dr. Sarai’s colleague and of course with these kinds of emotions I would imaging the brain is trying to trick you again. Please be proactive and read Dr. Sarno’s book again. You can yell at your brain. I believe in you!! ❤️

    Breathing exercise done in a quiet room, restful-most-position (ideally lying down) briefly (5 - 10 min) just a couple times a day "feeds" the body oxygen boosting/enhancing all circulatory systems of the body and fights FM. Great video, good job! Personal behavioral therapy to discover repressed symptoms opens up the body the chance to also heal. Big changes for the body can be achieved without meds. My opinions here. THX 🌄

    anybody here suffering of myofascial pain sindrome? pain in the muscles of the neck and shoulder (contracture for many years) and strong nsuralgia / migraines daily? the pain going from the muscles to the left side of the head. my head and cervical MRIs seem to be fine except of a scoliosis but i suspect i might be a candidate for the TMS therapy formulated by John E Sarno.     Shirley from Alberta…When I saw the reference to Dr Sarno’s 12 steps, I was ‘in’! I read one of his books months ago and became painfree! So grateful for the 12 steps without having to read the whole rational! You did a great job of delivering this! Thank you!!! A surgery and injury created pain again in the ‘old areas’. My experience is pain triggers pain…back to eliminating the part not about ‘healing’…💕💜👩🏼🙏

    I'm reading Dr. Sarno's book, The Divided Mind. It was recommended to me recently following a period of stress / burnout. I have experienced lower back pain for the last 15 years and no medical diagnosis. I'm really interested in the TMS theory and now working on this to help relieve my symptoms by addressing the source of the issue.

      @@kikita278 I found it educational and started me on a new journey to address the TMS as described by Dr Sarno. I found a therapist educated in TMS and having one session per month with homework and using the Curable app too. Still only on week 2 so very early days! Feeling optimistic though 😊

    Very helpful video. I now know that my issue is biological/physical, as when I try to overcome my issue it gets much worse. So it's very important to rule out biological.

    How to deal with PEM if one has ME/CFS? Pacing is the most important tool to avoid a crash. I truly believe in this theory

      I am also wondering about this. I guess we should not be afraid to go outside and walk a little bit every day if we’re not completely floored. We shouldn’t push ourselves on long walks, but a short walk should be in the cards.

      I would recommend the book Reverse Therapy by Dr John Eaton for an alternate view on PEM that made a huge shift for me, to enable progress and healing

      @@breatheslow356 Thanks - I will have look at it. There are many Retraining Programs, I had tried Gupta long ago and informed myself about others, but one needs energy, also mentally to do the work and stay positive.
      At a certain point a always lost my motivation, even though I know how important it is. I suppose many of us needs trauma therapy first to not to get stuck in old conditionings/programmings which are mainly in the subconsious. Did you heal with the programe?

    Thanks, very useful. Had surgery on my left foot a year ago, surgeon told me three was nothing structurally wrong with it. Been through the avoidance/catastrophising thing though still a bit intimidated at facing pain square on.

    I have an incomplete spinal cord injury and I’ve dealt with chronic pain and neuropathy since my injury in 2008. However, since the start of the pandemic, I developed acute health anxiety, panic attacks, and now my back pain has gone off the charts since April 2023. I’m caught in a nasty cycle of pain, anxiety, and depression… which only worsens the pain, then anxiety, and brings more depression. I’m looking at getting a therapist that deals with chronic pain. I’m certain my SCI is causing a certain level of neuropathy, but I also believe that my anxiety and depression are making it worse.

    Great video. I've been following Sarno's steps for years; they cured me of terrible debilitating bouts of chronic back pain 10 years ago.
    However it seems chronic pain is something I have to live with. Last year it was a combination of right shoulder pain and left inner knee pain. I kept working out despite the pain, working around the pain, so to speak, and eventually the shoulder pain vanished. The knee pain took longer, but then switched sides!
    So even though I understand and believe that these are classic TMS symptoms, I never seem to be able to fully get rid of them.
    I practice karate several times a week. The pain subsides as the workout progresses. But it would be amazing to leave the pain behind.
    I can easily see how I suppress/contain emotions, especially anger, no mystery there. But still my brain resists letting me off the hook, pain-wise. So it seems like I could go further in treating my TMS, just don't know how.

    Im not scared of movement. I have other kinds of fear that flare me up. Sometimes it just a little thing like when I wake up anxious. I just have to get up and go do life. It can be tough but its the only thing that works for me. When i realized i wasn’t broken I just started back 100 on everything I used to do. Running and biking was big . I thought i would never do them again because of the pain. But I did . I had to be the boss not my limbic system

    Your brain is there to tell you there is a problem! I broke and destroyed my ankle 18 yes ago. I was told after they put it back together best they could, I was healed and the pain I had was all in my head. I lived and worked in severe pain 18 yes, because healthcare told NE its all in my head. I recently had ankle replacement surgery, and was told by the surgeon the ankle should have been done decades ago! Yes of Dr apts complaining and being told my pain was wrong and nothing was wrong! Listen to patients most know their bodies and feeling better than you!

    I’ve read the divided mind… and. Am working hard on recovery. I have TMS in both elbows. The left elbow for two years (as confirmed by two steroid shots, and a clean MRI) and my right for about 6 months. I’ve seen a reduction in pain in my dominate arm but my left side has gotten worse. Confident I’ll get there but it’s tough! These videos help.

    Im on the path to finding a mental health therapist. I have alot of repressed emotions over my sons suicide. So many other details make this issue a severe case of CPTSD. I just got a new doctor, so the next step is therapy. I have been in chronic pain for about a year, and I know that it's TMS, not fybromyalgia.

    I get down on the ground work in garden... I sweep the driveway...Iclean house...I grocery shop...ect...I live alone...I have a commercial kitchen in my basement so I go up &downstairs all day I make a few decorated cakes ( I've been doing cakes for 40 years) but have a difficult time walking because I have groin pain * sciatic...& if I walk too fast I would " buckle" over & fall! I do yoga six days a week...

    I have CFS, and am having difficulty with increasing what I do. I've been working at what has felt like my limit for as long as I can remember due to family commitments etc. When I do even a little bit more of cognitive tasks, I can barely function for the next couple of days. I filled in a small part of a form this week and that evening at family teatime I couldn't even form sentences. I'm not sure how to handle this.

      Hi Katherine I know it can be tough but gradual consistent exposure is the answer that’s what the research shows. The key is mentally reinterpreting the symptoms as benign and not dangerous. This is changing your brain on two levels- mental communication to the limbic brain and physical communication from the body to the brain when you gradually but steadily keep doing a little more each week. It’s not easy but cfs influences the same parts of the brain as chronic pain- that limbic brain. It’s become over sensitized and over reacts to very normal things. You have to reteach it whats normal again. Also deal with emotions. Not sure of your history feel free to reach out for initial consultation if you want to dive in deeper to put the pieces together.     What about the fascia? So much of our emotions get stuck there and moving the fascia can remove pain immediately. Magnets can also help remove emotions.

    My medical brackground is radiation oncolgy .Are there any scientific double blinds studies that demonstrate your conjecture on pain is true? In having chronic pain for 45 years and having studied the neuroscience of pain this this theory feels valid for only a VERY tiny percent of people with chonic pain. Thank's kindly

      Thanks for checking in. Yes there are lots of brain MRI studies showing that the circuits in the brain move to emotional circuits in chronic pain. In fact Dr. Apkarian at Northwestern has done a bunch of brain studies which predict with 85% accuracy who develops chronic pain based on connections in the brain. I’ll try to link a couple here it’s also newer one that could predict chronic low back pain from healthy controls at 91% accuracy based on the functional connectivity of some centers in the brain. When you combine that information with with Dr. Sarno was saying years ago a lot of chronic pain is due to the central nervous system and subsequent autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Obviously not all chronic pain some severe joint changes can absolutely cause pain for example. Just need to get a good history of the patient looking at their whole life not just the physical side of things to put the picture together. Take care!

    All makes sense and very helpful, thanks. But what about when depression is also present? The 12 reminders tend to be much harder when also faced with a depression (in my case I believe also "conditioned"). Do we separate the pain from the depression, or integrate? Perhaps "think psychologically" is the key reminder but to me it does imply additional resourcing (eg CBT, mindfulness etc.) as it feels like a double-whammy.

    I am a doctor with my own chronic pain. The division between physical and emotional is not as neat as this, especially in older people. Untangling the ( genuine) physical causes of pain from the ( genuinely) emotional causes is complicated
    It would take the TMS work to a whole new level by addressing this dilemma

      Listen to his audio book. He specifically states that ones who don't believe mind body connection, this won't work. Sounds like you're trying to find flaws in this.

    Thanks for sharing. Wondering though, how this can be adopted when in the condition Myaligic Encephalomyelitis, as ME is a condition due to mitochondrial dysfunction, i.e. mitochondrial shutdown? If you don't have the energy to do something you like/must do, how does it work to persuade the brain to go on, considering post extertional malaise?

    I'm not sure if it's tms I have but for years I keep coming down with flu like symptoms every week, I'm always feeling unwell and in the last year I have started getting aches and high fatigue , docs want to label it as fibromyalgia. I'm 37 and don't have much of a life , I want to work and do normal stuff. Is there tms practitioners in the UK? Have you any more useful videos I could watch pls I really want to start helping myself, i can't afford to pay for any help so I'm hoping I will find stuff on RUclips.

      SIRPA is in the UK they are great. I am a SIRPA certified practitioner myself. They have an online program you could look at for more info. Lots of other resources with TMS books out there best of luck you can get better!

    I read Sarno's book over a decade ago and at the end he excluded EDS (a genetic connective tissue disorder I am sure you are familiar with). I am curious if the thinking or research has changed on this over the years. Thank you for this summary and outreach.

      There is some research coming out the show that there is a autonomic nervous system component and brain and stress component to EDS. Specifically that anxiety is very highly linked with EDS.

      Pretty sure you are a charlatan. Telling people with chronic pain to exercise themselves like they don’t have pain. But they DO have pain and forcing yourself to experience even higher volumes of pain and then be told that if you don’t do it “oh well” which is what it sounds like Dr Sarno is saying. This is what all you people who take advantage of people with health issues do. You blame the patient. Living with high levels of pain is HELL. You have NO idea.

    I have mild to moderate Degenerate disc In my back. Your saying just push through the pain? I mean it has subsided drastically and I feel I can run and return to my daily activities but the pain only started happening 4 months ago. I hear the disc will reharden just needs time. So I've been taking it easy and not pushing myself to the limits like before. I'm definitely not afraid, I'm ready heck I was running right after it happened. I had to Force myself to stop. I'm just strengthening my core now and goin on lots of walks. I'm ready just taking it slow. I'm ready just trying to give my body rest.

      Yes your pain is not chronic. If you hurt yourself with an injury give it some time and gradually return to activities. Not all pain is TMS and chronic. Makes sense what you are doing

    Hi I've had a stroke and I have burning pain in the face arm on the side of my stroke. It comes and goes. I believe it's TMS can you tell me what you think. I had a mir on my brain I still have the damage in my cerebellum from my stroke so I'm not sure.

    Thanks for helping us, Jim. I have a question. I've been having pain in my left scapular, and a scraping feeling, esp. when I move the arm from side to side Doing some research, it looks like I have winging scapula. The scapula sticks out; my right arm is longer than the left arm; and my left shoulder is lower than the right shoulder. Do you think that this is a form of TMS too? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Yes this could easily be a ‘normal abnormality’ many people have one bigger foot a longer arm etc. the history is the most important as to how the symptoms started. Many many people had discrepancies side to side with no issues

    I read Sarno years ago. I have severe lower back pain alternating with groin pain. Also severe arthritis in hips. Had one replaced as it was thought pain from that. Now the pain is particularly horrid on waking but lasts all day. Was told it was sacroiliitis. Does that come under TMS? I want so much to believe i can overcome with TMS knowledge but the pain gets worse. I have been very anxiety ridden during pandemic and because of pain.
    Any lose sacroiliitis thru TMS?

    I don't know very much about Dr. Sarno's work, but have been curious. Currently I have pain in my cervical area - MRI confirms a herniated disc there. Also, compression fracture in the thoracic area, which led to diagnosis of osteoporosis. I've wondered whether periodic flare ups in pain are related to emotional causes, or if perhaps I'm not the audience he was writing to, since there is actual damage in these areas.

    But what if your brain produces high blood pressure because of the emotional stress which lead to a heart attack? I dont know if it is so harmless. Seen in the latest succes story video of Dan Buglio it can also influence the thyroid system and other hormones. How do I place this?

      Yes good point stress can place stress on any area of the body. So if underlying emotional stress is the cause then we need to get the system to relax which is not worrying, catastrophizing, exercising and working with emotions. The ‘harmless’ Sarno mentions means no deep structural cause and it’s reversible.

    I find this confusing I'm afraid. There is no movement that I avoid, I do yoga and Tai Qi and I'm a stay at home dad of two children, one of whom is six years old, so pretty full on.       I don’t know your story Jeremy but just the little bit you shared it’s possible the children are triggering emotions in you that are not being expressed and this is creating pain. Seems to make sense especially if you’re very active and can do things on a physical level. I’ve seen it many times before with other patients where the stresses of raising children trigger symptoms.     What if these feelings of abandonment, loneliness, fear…have been going on for years and seem to have no end? Very dark, very depressing. How does that feel like an injury that heals when it never does?

      You can acknowledge those feelings but you don’t need to become those feelings. If you’re aware of them you’re separated from them. acknowledge them but also have the intention of letting them go

    it is my case and I want to clarify for myself. I am powerlifter and I had injured my back when I tried to lift heavy ( at the right time I left) . so how can I tell to me and my brain it is TMS and it is not real injury!!!

      Need to go through your history to put the pieces together- things like how long been since injury, what did you do, psychosocial factors like anxiety, catastrophizing, hypervigilance, stress, how you deal with emotions, and past history including adverse childhood events (aces).       There could be physical reasons if you have exhausted yourself or have some type of lung issue but anxiety can cause a lot of air hunger

      @@thepainpt I’m doing the somatic tracking, meditations and journaling. Most of my otter symptoms have subsided but the chest pressure and shortness of breath just isn’t shifting. Any additional advice will be much appreciated

    Told i have severe arthritis, bone spurs, in hip. Can this be TMS? Or partially TMS? Quitt Painful but not all the time

      It really depends and is individual to each person. Generally speaking if you have mild to moderate arthritis many people have that severe arthritic changes are related to some pain

    Are you with Lin Health? They ripped me off sir. I can't handle the pain and they made it worse. I joined the program and Lin health took out the 400 dollars but me no product making me feel more pain from people that I trusted to help me. 😢

      Dr Sarno wrote a book called, "Healing Back Pain". It's his name he created for the syndrome. "TMS is a condition in which unconscious emotional issues (primarily rage, though other practitioners include other subconscious emotional issues such as anxiety, past trauma, and fear) initiate a process that causes physical pain and other symptoms."

      @@andreaama9254 Even if there were no solid proof it would make a lot of sense. We do feel different when experiencing pain and if we are feeling different at certain times we can generate certain physical conditions.
