Making A Gothic Victorian Evening Bodice

  • Today I finally dive into some silk taffeta as I make a mid 1880's evening bodice. I modified the Truly Victorian pattern from my last video to work for a dinner bodice instead, with a more open neckline and shorter sleeves. Then I embellished the life out of it of course! Should I make more beaded cicadas?

First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. I have a contemporary dress in a dupioni that same colour! I love the green-black colour play and the crisp swooshy noise it makes. Ermagurd, watching this while I whip stitch overcast the seams on a "walking skirt" lol.
Just got to the end of the video, I love it! The fit is great and the embellishments are so pretty. I really like the little bit of lace at the cuffs. The whole vibe is badass and super feminine.

I actually had tears in my eyes when you did the reveal!! Please do more webs between the rows of leaves down the frontman of the bodice. Epic. The brooch just blew my mind and yes I would love to see more of that. You look ravishing in the bodice. Incredible makeup and your skin seems very gothic and pale. Hah! If you are doing things with bugs, you should totally make a bug scientist outfit for it! I hope you aren’t in too much permanent pain, but I think your sacrifice is worth it for your end result! And I forgot to mention the back bodice bat points! Swoon!!! The B Roll, the music, the project scope are so impressive! Incredible. We are not worthy. You are a goddess.

OMG😍 These are stunning and you look beautiful 😍.
I have a tip for sewing while in agony... or to prevent the agony. Bring the work up to you on big over-stuffed pillows. Prop your own arms up with soft bed pillows to support. This can be done on the sofa using a big sofa pillow to raise your work. Lighting is key as is learning to isolate your arm and back muscles to hold them relaxed while using your hands actively to sew. I was taught this by my occupational therapist who hooked me up to electrodes for biofeedback while isolating and relaxing back, neck and arms. We have body memory so as soon as you find and learn YOUR personal technique you can re-invoke it at will.
    Hope you feel better soon❤️

Stretching out big time before sitting down to hand sew helps a lot with the hurting back. Take breaks to stretch every half hour or so. It really helps a lot. Soaking in epsom salts in the bath along with Dr. Teals's epsom salt and menthal bath soak does wonders. Something that I do when I get off of work, when doing hotel housekeeping.

Pick a Location, Pick an Era, see what you can do with it. It could end up horrifically, or fantastically. Who knows!? --- Big No on the taxidermy. I hate things that look real/alive but aren't. Taxidermy, Wax Figures...Dead people at open-casket funerals. NOPE! Always terrified they'll jump at me, start talking, wake up, etc. --- Not shocked by the over-pin sewing, but shocked to see you do it on the new-old Singer! Do you name your machines? {squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!} Yes, spider web your leaves. Yes -- bead bugs. OH, LAWZ! That is LOVELY!! Love the color of this -- reminds me of this flamenco dress my mother made (long ago before she retired) It was green and black -- well, we'll be generous and call it fabric. I think it was actually microfiber porcupine and cactus, green and black hate -- er, I mean fabric. It had a LOT of body and worked fabulously for a long tail flamenco dress, but yowch, it was hell to wear. This, I trust, is not painful to wear, just to sew. ABSOLUTELY LOOOOVE the Vampiring on the back of this. {Lidocaine patch.} [hey, look, I didn't threaten to steal this outfit!!! (I thought about it)] Stay well!

Gorgeous! When you talked about getting a more sustainable posture for hand sewing I was reminded of a documentary on samurai swords that I watched. In the very last step the sword is polished by hand and is a time consuming and labor intensive process. I remember that the sword polisher said it took him ten years to learn how to sit properly. Needless to say, that would not have been a career for me.

I hate to say do more work, but I do think your spider web idea on the front is an excellent one and should be done.
I, for one, would love to see you make a beaded pin- something not black- so that it is easier to see what you are doing. I am loving this series you are doing and think everything is turning out so gorgeous!

You look incredible in this bodice! I am living for these videos. I also loved seeing the making of the brooch, and would love to see more! I have been so looking forward to your videos each week. I know you're going to receive a heap of advice for back pain, but for my sewing related back pain I use one of those foam rollers under my upper back, lie down on the floor and just roll it out. You can also use this thing called a "peanut" on a yoga block. (it hurts so good!) It has saved me from having to get regular massages haha!

very nicely done! I hope you can eventually find accessories for the 99- I have buttonholer, zig zagger, all the feet. You can get a piping foot which is nice for when you start piping (it becomes addictive) - and maybe get an adjustable table and pillow to bring your handwork up to a height to limit your hunching. It helps. No novel has ever surprise me more from what I assumed than Dracula. The unabridged version is just amazing - for gothic I recommend Dragonwyk. it is a spellbinding gothic romance.

Thank you Christina! I have indeed found a buttonholer attachment for the 99k but it does intimidate me to use it, I need to practice with it more first!

Just play with your scraps. By adjusting tension, cording the buttonholes you can get amazing results. I’ve done a wider and then a narrow on top for a two tone buttonhole. So. Much. Fun.

I found some sparkle, turquoise fabric, at Walmart. When time allows, I will be putting together a dress that will be reminiscent of Poppy Troll. Thanks for sharing your beautiful work!

Things I've learnt that help for sewing. I wear a corset if I know I will be sitting working on a project for a long time. And, make sure your project is adequately lit! Bad lighting leads to bad vision which leads to leaning far too close to it.

Can you sew while sitting in a recliner? I have major back problems, so I hand quilt and crochet while sitting in a recliner for back support. Support your neck also with a small Rollie pillow, if you find you are holding your head up off the chair.

When I am hand sewing I like to support my project up to chest level to avoid the back and shoulder pain. Usually sit cross legged on my couch with pillows in my lap! I failed to do this during an 8 hour day of getting lost in some hand embroidery recently and ended up with a bad pinch and a week of pain. Definitely don't reccomend! D:

The next time you have a lot of hand sewing, try wearing one of your corsets. It will keep your posture upright as well as providing back support.

I have no idea if this is orthopedically correct, but when I have a lot of hand stitching to do, I sit on my couch so that I can lean back, and I have the work draped across my lap. I’ve done many hours and yards of hand stitching that way, and my back and shoulders are usually fine afterwards. If you like having tension on your work, I know of people pinning it to a tailor’s ham or weighted beanbag type of object. It’s not usually my style, but I’ve tried it and it definitely makes a difference.

Regarding neck, shoulder and back pain. Not sure where you are living but here in Canada I got to a physiotherapist to have dry Needling done. It really helps to release the tight muscles. Though it might help.

  • @apwhoa7767

When doing a lot of forward work with your body and hands I find the best, very best release for the muscles is to reach up over head, slide your hands up a wall and or pulling down on a bar that is over head. It Works!!

I sew with a pillow in my lap - sometimes several pillows! - to raise the work up so I don't have to crunch over. Obviously somethings have to be done flat on the table, but generally I'll baste on the table and then settle in on the couch surrounded by pillows 😄

I've worked with taffeta before, and I believe that if any garment made from it turns out perfectly smooth then some kind of sorcery was involved I'm far more a technician than I am an artist, and it drove me nuts trying to keep everything from looking like it had been slept in.
In the end, I decided that "mostly smooth" had to be good enough. The gown was for my mother and she loved it, so I guess that's all that matters.

The little sleeve on the ballgown bodice was very important: Victorian ladies did not shave under their arms -- nor did they have deodorant. They had to have a little flutter of sleeve to hide furry underarms and the dress shields that protected their clothing from sweat.
