In this video, I talk about female physician doctors, in particular Elizabeth Blackwell and Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. I also then plan, draw, and sew together a Victorian dress to wear on top of a bustle. In this video I will be making the waistcoat, the skirt and the overskirt.
I also go into the history of the caduceus and why it is often confused for the staff of Asclepius.

Fun fact from a classics major: Hermes got the caduceus from Apollo, who was the god of medicine and the father of Asclepius. So is all connected! 😊
I've also heard Hermes represented merchants as well is that true?
I believe that is also true!
I applauded (accidentally waking up my dog) when you said you were going to be kind to yourself and change the outfit rather than try to change your body. Thank you for sharing such a great message!
_A Doctors Bag_ - a video just got posted today by a YTer named Bedo's Leatherwork LLC. It's about his restoration work on a 100 year old doctors bag. This is apparently not the only one he's done. He does the leatherwork, you rework the interior in an appropriate canvas and ta da. The bag gets to live another 100 years...

Quick sidenote: In our university in Europe, the reason is theorised to be that the snake curled on the rod of Asclepius is the old timey way to extract poison from the snake. In europe there is usally also a bowl depicted on top of the staff for the venom. Now I must say that that was also just a theory, but I found it worth mentioning.
sorry for the bad english. Not my native language
This is a WOW!
this was fascinating to watch, beautifully done!
The patient, proactive, gentle, and reasonable way that you explain things that might be sources of inquiry for your viewers makes me feel confident that your bedside manner is absolutely fantastic.
Ahh! Thank you so much!!
Thank you for being kind to yourself; it's reminded me that I can make back lacing anything I want to accommodate weight fluctuations which will ease much of my sewing anxiety. Also I like seeing the dog hair, reminded me I don't need to have fits over lint and stray bird fluff. The final outfit looks both comfy and fun to wear.
lol I've given up on the fight against dog hair. I'll never win.
I haven't finished watching the video but omg the black dress you are wearing is amazing!
Wow, the Lady Doctor suit is everything I aspire to sew. Feminine and tailored, severe but beautiful.
I loved the black dress as well, though she did look tired ! The other days she looked less tired, so hope she "caught up" enough !
I don't know how she does it all !
It looks a lot like the dresses from I Do Declare - they're amazing, definitely look them up!
Hi Natalie! It's from I do Declare and I linked it in my description. Thank you so much!
10:20 - THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! Normalize the idea that bodies change and we don't have to beat ourselves up about it and altering our clothes to work with us rather than us being required to alter our bodies to work with our clothes (and to work with some dumb ideas of perfection). Seriously, so much respect for this, thank you.
I really do wish modern fashions were more adjustible! There's so much evidence in historical clothing that the clothing was adjustible or were altered at some point. Thank you so much!
Quote of the Day: “If Worth did it, I can too.”
I find the use of the caduecus and the rod of Asclepius really interesting. I have a medialert necklace and I made sure it was the single snake cos I wanted be correct haha. I learnt the correct one from Percy Jackson books. As long as you're happy who cares.
I have had first responder training ... we DO NOT CARE whether you have a 1-snake or a 2-snake alert medallion, nor do we check for staffs with or without wings.
If it resembles either of those insignia and it's a bracelet or necklace ... we'll look at it immediately.
I wear a Medic Alert bracelet and only now noticed that it has the Asclepius rod on it. I've worn this for 3 yrs and just never noticed it before
@@lazygardens I think they meant they personally wanted to be correct, not that it mattered in an emergency
Dang! That's a good point!
@@lazygardens yeah I know it doesn't matter. It's for my own personal nerdy satisfaction 😅
It turned out beautifully!!! I love that you’re kind to yourself too!!!
Oooooh myyyy goodness, it looks absolutely breathtaking!! I can't wait to see the get ready video! Oh, and just for fun, could you weigh the whole thing?? So many yards of wool plus interfacing, lining and 168 buttons must weigh quite a bit and I am really curious😄
lol That's a great suggestion! I'm going to weigh myself before and after!
You guys, I got to see this dress in person last night, and it is even more fabulous in real life!!! ❤️❤️❤️
ahhh!!! Thank you Lorien!
My favourite thing about Fashion Historian/Fashion Design RUclips is the debunking of the myth that ‘corsets’ (a catch all term for a lot of things) are uncomfortable. They are uncomfortable only if someone does a hack job with it.
I’ve had the worst day ever, going to bed now. You just made it 10 times better❤️❤️ love your videos soo much, it’s definetely a highlight every time
Ahh! Thank you so much Maren! I hope things are better today!
I love this project... the edges are so crisp!!! I love how it looks and being kind to yourself leads to such a beautiful effect anyway so thank you for taking that route anyway... excited for the upcoming vid!!!
and the puppy is adorable ❤
Absolutely love your solution to shifting body by adding lacing section. It looks cool and makes so much more sense to have clothes change for us than us change for clothes.
I got so excited when you mentioned the historical context. Dr. Anderson was clearly a pioneer.
Sewing does look easier when you iron the folds, I should stop being lazy and actually do it T__T
The caduceus/Asclepius thing was interesting - here in Australia neither are really used as a symbol, you're more likely to have a cross, or with ambulances you just recognise the checks and the colour. I did find a couple of logos with the staff of Asclepius on them but it's not prominently used. I saw the caduceus for the first time when playing The Sims as a kid, because they use it as a symbol for the medical career. I was like "what's with this weird snake-with-wings-thing?"
I appreciate how happy you sound to be with this project. As usual, it looks great, and informative.
Amazing! always wanted to dress in period clothing, (my past lives lol), but other than a colonial set I never tried again.
have made cosplay.
You have put the urge back into my sewing fingers.
thank you!
Just stunning! My childhood heart is happy. When I was little I was completely obsessed with Dr. Quinn Medicine Women. To the point where I did want to be a doctor. Until I realized I do not like blood. So, I just love this!
In the old testament, God told Moses to put the snake on a pole and anybody who was bit by a snake could look at the pole and be healed.
Dress is gorgeous! I love all the buttons! They add so much to the outfit.
You are amazing and so very talented! Absolutely beautiful dress and a wonderful history lesson to boot…it doesn’t get much better than that! Thank you❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
I loved hearing you talk about the caduceus vs asclepius! I knew about the difference since my fiancé is a med student, but I still learned some new things! I do have to admit the caduceus is a little snazzier....
the whole thing is gorgeous, but that vest is AMAZING. I cannot believe you put on that many buttons, there's commitment and then there's....that.
LOVE this.
YES! To making the waistcoat slightly adjustable and therefore a lot more usable, as we all fluctuate a little in weight depending on seasons, stress levels etc. Somehow all the dog hairs also just made me happy - when someone as put together and elegant as Sewstine has doghair in unfinished projekts, I feel a lot calmer about the cathairs in mine🥰
The staff with the single snake is also a symbol of healing from the Old Testament of the Bible! You can look it up, the reference is Exodus 7: 8-13.
I’d be tempted to put buttons on the flared part of the back of the jacket, near the hem. I love this outfit. It amazes me how you find the time to do such big projects.
I've been waiting for this video, and well worth the wait, thank you it is beautiful. Also the Chemise ala Reine you are wearing in this video, have you got a video for the making of it, it is lovely
I'm a doctor and I thrifted a leather doctors bag because of your last video!
The Caduceus is Hermes' in his role of Lord of Messengers. Thus travelers and the kharis due to them. Thus the diplomatic immunity due to Doctors when they travel and cross borders.
Oh my God you have macarons for pattern weights????? 🥺💕
This looks amazing! I love the history lesson too.
This looks amazing! I love all the buttons!! Thank you for the deep dive into the caduecus/asclepius, its not something I really paid attention to! 😄
Good call on the being accommodating of the fact that women change shape from year to year, not "oh dear, I must work to fit the garment"...
Side eye to a certain Ms Kardashian!
Thank you! I honestly do think clothing in general should be kinder to us!
Petition to see manufacturing of buttons with the correct Medical Symbol.
I LOVE YOU AND THANK YOU FOR THAT REVELFASHIONLATION USING IT FOREVER AS I LIVE😘😘👑👑🖤🖤🖤🖤👑👑🖤🖤🖤🖤👑👑
That is a beautiful ensemble. Well. Done. The Medical Grannies would be proud to see it. Looking forward to the photo shoot. Do you have enough of those buttons left over for another project? I'm not quite sure I'd have the patience for over 160 buttons, but I love the ribbon hack...
Thank you! I never realized that lacing up the back of a waistcoat was an option. The Grannies were so, so clever with these things. This summer I will (finally, finally) attempt my own waistcoat...

My little puppy is a Cavalier King Charles puppy, his name is Spencer, he will be 3 years old on June 18th. He is absolutely adorable!!! I hope your little darling will get along well with your beautiful older puppies. Your outfit is spectacular!!! I admire you so much!!! 🥰🥰🥰🐶🐶🐶♥️♥️♥️
I can’t come up with a worthy adjective for how amazing your work is!!! I am such an instant fan of yours. I have things I should be doing, but I can’t stop watching your videos! I sew simple clothing, I am a beginning quilter, I have started collecting vintage sewing machines. I scrapbook, I make cards (stamping, die cutting, etc.) make handmade journals. I love mixed media- watercolor, acrylic, colored pencils, pastels. I make jewelry - too many hobbies!
Now I have to make a Renaissance costume purse / pouch for my daughter in place of a purse to wear to festivals! Perhaps I can make one like the ones Bernadette and you both have!
I graduated from business school in Houston, TX 2ish years ago. They also advise dressing extremely conservatively around recruiters and interviewers. For my most recent interview (online) I was nervous because the only blazer that fit (COVID weight changes, yay) was a bright red one from the 1980s with full power shoulders. I said screw it and threw on a white collared button down with black stripes going both directions. If I'm going to be unconventional might as well have fun.
I got the job. It's a more casual industry, so I wouldn't recommend copying me unless you are confident you can also get away with it.
I love the look of that with all the buttons! I know they're a pain to sew on, but worth it! The dress must weigh a ton, though!
Since Apollo traded the Caduceus to Hermes for the lyre that he just *had to have*, it's not a completely incorrect symbol to use, but the rod of Asclepius is definitely more accurate. I do think it makes sense for ambulances and mobile medical units to use the caduceus though, since it belongs to the god of travel, but also came from a god of healing... amongst many other things.
This is great. I was looking for video explaining flatlining and how the hems are supposed to be treated. My next project is a corduroy waistcoat, a modern unfitted one with a few alterations to make it look more 1900s. I may just add facings to the edges and trim some seam allowances.
Gorgeous!! I love your channel and the way you explain how to do things and all of your historical facts. Every time you make something I say to myself "That's my favorite!" So, they are all my favorites.
Ahh! Thank you so much!
critical role fans and people actually in the medical field are the only people i might expect to know about the whole caduceus thing lol, now more people are going to know! cool! (critical role because there's a character named Caduceus who shows up later in their second campaign, and he's a cleric aka one of the primary healers. and the person who played him really likes to pick names that have multiple layers of meaning, and i won't say any more in case of spoilers!)
I realized the lining thing was purposeful. Props for altering the garment, not your body.
this video is... so chill and sweet. I want to live in these vibes. The suit came out absolutely beautiful, and the number of buttons made me have to pause and take some deep breaths bc that is So Many. (Also your macaroon fabric weights make me so happy and I don't know why.)
Thank you so so much!!
Nothing like a good Doctorstine video to keep me company as I feverishly finish writing up my bachelor-thesis
Sew=stine? more like AWESOME-STINE!!!!!
Love you showing the details of this dress...love all the buttons...looks like your ready for anything....you explain so well I'll be back for more
amazing....where did you source the buttons?
Whooohoooo!!! Love this so much! I always show your blogs to my mother, who was a seamstress when she was younger. You blow her away with how much hand sewing you are doing!
Holy buttons, she's stunning!
xoxo's Sandie
Wow. So impressive! I'm very much looking forward to seeing the getting ready video. This outfit is going to be AMAZING!
By the way, counting the buttons on this reminded me of a book I read in 3rd grade (in about 1962), Caddie Woodlawn, who was a fictional girl in frontier times. One day a girl from back East was visiting and bragging about the number of buttons on her dress. She didn't have anything close to 168, though! You win the award for the most buttons used in one outfit!
I've done some stage costuming, and when you absolutely have to have an actress in a particular gown that she cannot zip/button up, I turn them into "one-size-fits-most" lace ups!
Imagine, in ancient Egypt a women was allowed to be a doctor but in “modern” age woman couldn’t do anything but be at home
As soon as youtube notified me, you bet I clicked on this real quick and exclaimed "YAAAAASSSSS!!!!"
I didn't know that there was a symbol with 2 snakes and wings. I'm so used to the german symbol for pharmacies, wich is a big red A with a white asclepios symbol in it, that it would never have occured to me that there was anything else used to symbolise medicin. learned something.
I've been looking for this comment, that was exactly my first thought! I even second guessed myself, as I wasn't sure anymore if I might just not have paid attention whenever passing a pharmacy the last 25 years 😅
You mentioned the 1880s skirt and it took me straight to the TV Show ‘The Gilded Age’ where Mrs. Bertha Russell has the most fabulous collection of bustle gowns.
I am crying your puppy is too adorable
Why does it remind me of Darleks?
This looks so amazing! I can’t wait to see the next video with all of the awesome accessories and to see you moving around in the whole outfit.
Absolutely riveted by this process. This is a stunning ensemble. Well done you. So much amazing sewing, the planning, the thought, the effort, the dedication and the outcome. Wow you really knocked this one out of the field. I’m blown away. Also the colour, the buttons, all those cute buttons journeying up and down and around this outfit. Scrumptious stuff. I think the threading of the buttons through with cord behind is a genius idea. I saw something similar a long time ago on the inside of, what I think from a child’s misty memories, may have been one of my grandmother’s jackets from way back in the day. (Like very early 1900’s ?) So cool. Thank you for showing the process of this and I can’t wait to see you in it. Do hope you get to wear it to your Hospital, wouldn’t that be something.
Love your videos, that Merino wool turned out lovely and draped so nice - great job and thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
So many buttons....so worth it!
It's so exciting seeing this come together and your JOY at making it!!
I made so many notes watching this video for tips and tricks when I start working again on my Victorian bodice and overskirt. Thank you!!!
I cannot believe it’s been a month since your last video. I’ve missed your lovely videos 👏🏽
Your just so amazing. I love all your videos they really inspire me x
Thank you!
omg, it's amazing!!!!!!! :O
i looooooooove it!!!!!!!!!!!
i wonder whether one can get special buttons for electrical engineers and such.... :D
Oooh!! That sounds amazing!
Maybe there are buttons with lightning bolts.
You're really just gonna wear that stunning green dress and not drop any details? Argh it's the same as the yellow one isn't it!?! I need it!!!! Details please please please.
Hahah! Sorry, it was on my instagram for a while! It's from linennaive - use code Sewstine for 10% off. :D I hope you love it - I seriously do!
I LOVE that you can very clearly see doggy hairs all over the black wool - they've been helping you sew!! (I also have a studio animal and the struggle is real but i wouldn't have it any other way...)
WOW! The amount of effort/work that u put into your outfits is astounding. The detail! Love everything that u do.
OMG, I absolutely love this outfit, you explain every so well! I have just found your channel, via Rachel Maksy and I am working my way through all your videos, love what you do and how you fit all this in being a Doctor, a RUclipsr and a mum is beyond me!
I am in love with the entire outfit!! Love the overskirt!
Hermes is also associated with medicine in some places so I wouldn’t say it’s entirely wrong. Hermes was associated with travel, commerce, good luck, and health! So I think it works out just fine either way
Ok, yes, amazing, but where did you get that stunning black dress you're wearing?!?! 😍
Don't take this the wrong way, you look exhausted. Please take care of yourself, I love your videos but would hate you to exhaust yourself or make yourself sick trying to put out content. We'll be here waiting, get enough rest.
I wish I could like this twice, once for the incredible creativity and attention to detail and again for your refusal to punish your body for changing!
Glorious. I should say more, but I am gobsmacked with ALL the buttons!! ❤️
Talented brilliant incredible amazing showstopping never the same totally unique completely not ever been done before
Sponsorshipstine looks strangely similar to Editingstine...🧐🧐 theres something sus goin on here
Whooooo new video! Thank you so much.
Not the Kyiv National university jumpscare 💀💀💀
Wow! It turned out wonderfully! I was kinda laughing at myself because I also got interested in making one of your more casual dresses you were wearing to make the doctor dress!
I enjoy watching your videos, and marvel at what you accomplish.
Ok so I’m here for the fashion, but you have a Cavi ????❤️❤️😀😀
19:05
I have an 1880s blouse that uses shank buttons, and uses the exact same technique as this with a piece of sturdy twine, and they used that as the permanent closure
I wonder if legal restrictions on the use of medical designators in some countries or territories have disuaded button factories from offering Asclepius bottons outside of official deliveries to medical institutions.
👑👑🖤🖤🖤🖤👑👑🖤🖤🖤🖤👑👑
Wow.... that's a TONNE of work! It looks amazing!
I love the purple dress you’re wearing at 23:45 did you make it? Is there a video? Did you use a pattern or draft it yourself?
Hi! I think you're talking about the one I made? It's my Ghiblicore dress and there is video about it. (I made multiple - the video is about the green one but I made four of them in different colors).
@@Sewstine thank you!
The dress you're wearing is beautiful! I'd love a video on that.
Wow, such a great job. It is such a joy watching others put such care and time into their craft
what is the white pen that you used for marking? The lines looked really sharp and I'd like to use it too 😀
Isn't that amount of buttons like, super duper heavy?
