  • It's time for another housecoat, and this one was just staring at me from the pages of Pinterest as I was researching the Mandragora gown. The adorable grey coat from Crimson Peak...but in cotton flannel! Am I tempted to make a few more of these in other colors? I'll wait until I have a proper Victorian house to haunt perhaps!

First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Honestly, I have to take half a Xanax at night so I can actually fall asleep without my mind wandering off into disturbing visuals. It feels like maybe this is the disadvantage of having a very vivid visual imagination...? Once things go in the eyeballs, they don't really go away 😒 Even reading very edgy text-based content tends to stick, although not quite as tenaciously as audiovisual media?
Makes me wonder if strongly aural learners experience a similar phenomenon with things they hear...? 🤔

Off topic sort of, but my favorite housecoat in my life was when I was 4 and had my tonsils taken out. White flannel nightgown with red narrow stripes, the yoke said, "Twinkle twinkle little star" and had rhinestones here and there. The housecoat was red quilted fabric, red buttons with a rhinestone in the center, and a music box in one of the pockets. 1966 glamor, or I thought it was. I also thought they were real diamonds. I had forgotten about that.

darted to princess conversion??? *BOOF!!* mind blown... thank you for the possibilities, I need to try reversing this now...
Oh, and I used the princess seam kefta pattern as a base to make a wool housecoat in January, I screwed up the neckline by widening it across the back and ended up fixing it by piecing in some fabric to bring in the neckline a bit and then hiding the resulting correction with a capelet :) I also eliminated the waist seam because I don't need extra bulk (I'm bulky enough) and also I was pattern matching plaid so figured the waist was a good point to have a wide purple band in the plaid pattern.

I fully admit I watched it for Tom Hiddleston ( I may be Aro ace but I have eyes and aesthetic beauty is still a thing) and and goths content. If you like gothic-ish visuals I'm gonna recommend another Hiddleston film, only lovers left alive. It's a modern take on a vampire movie but not overtly so and is a visual feast. I'm completely fascinated watching you draft a pattern rom scratch with the measurements in your head! Everyone else I've seen has used a mannequin to draft a pattern and mock-up! YOU ARE AMAZING!

I think I have a solution for your eye lid problem. When I wear eyeshadow my eye lids would swell up and I just didn’t know what to do. I found this lid scrub, OCuSoft, and it has really helped. It’s a about $13-$20, depending on which strength you get, but I assure you that it works. Hope you can get back to fully loving eyeshadow without the worry of your eyes. 😍😍😍

If you're looking for an aesthetic and atmospheric Gothic ghost story with (as far as I remember) no terribly disturbing visuals, I recommend The Others. I haven't seen it in a minute, but I imagine it holds up pretty well!

Black wool or brown wool with a soutache would make a wonderful outer coat design to wear out and about. If making one for myself , wanting just below my calf where I have my longer skirts slightly above my ankles. Like seeing my leather shoes and keep my hems clean. Thank you for sharing your time and efforts in this project.

That coat is gorgeous. Love the colours. Another item added to my "must make at some point" list, but shorter.
Looking into historical ish things I can make that I can wear in my electric wheelchair. Love victorian, but the amount of fabric and padding means its not a good idea. Shortening the skirts wouldn't look right. Might get away with regency and shorter skirts plus the short stays are a bonus. Viking period I know i can do shorter. Just squares, rectangles and triangles.
Right going to binge watch some more of your videos.

Hope that you've been having great fun & cosy comfort swooping and swooshing around the house in this amazing creation! Those burgundy faux-ribbons really make it pop... and you've definitely inspired me to get a bit more ambitious with the length of red dressing-gown flannel waiting in my 'to do' stash!
Was relating SO hard to you throughout most of this video's commentary!! 😆 Everything from the love of lanterns & frustration with blunt scissors to the ace mystification with tingle-based crushes... (I did fall for a couple of guys in high school, but it was very much bsded on admiring their minds rather than panting after their bodies? 😝 Unlike most of my contemporaries...)
And your comment at 30:00 is so totally apropos! In both carpentry and sewing, sometimes things just seem to mysteriously go awry for no obvious reason? And then sometimes you jiggery-pokery with the rules and it still somehow turns out fine... That unpredictability has been a source of considerable frustration & frequent bemusement to me! 😅

Always great to get two videos in one week! If you're a fan of Guillermo del Toro, and I know you're a fan of Film Noir, you should see his remake of NIGHTMARE ALLEY (if you haven't already). It's gorgeous, and you'll come away wanting Kate Blanchett's femme fatale wardrobe. There are a few moments of some extreme violence, but not a lot.

    • @TheClosetHistorian
      @TheClosetHistorian  2 года назад

Thank you Ian! I just watched it, and I liked it okay, but I just wish it was about Blanchett's character not Cooper's 😂 I'd rather see the noir dame from start to finish and let her be the antihero main character for once, but alas I'll have to write them myself I suppose...

I adore your voice and even though I can’t really follow along with the sewing somehow it’s very compelling. In speaking about your inability to keep plants alive, much like myself, I was recently inspired by Christine McConnell’s videos on fake flower arrangements including her outdoor ones which you could do very well, for the upfront cost of the fake plants. She makes creepy Victorian flower arrangements and and I thought it might be a good suggestion for you because I could visualize you also enjoying taking a turn at fake flower arranging. Love from California, Kim.
