Making The Mandragora 1890s Hat // The Mandragora Day Gown

- The Mandragora hat! Or more importantly perhaps, the full 1890's day wear costume finished and worn outside in the cloudy twilight where the fading sky was causing some interesting effects in the camera. Some of my photos actually came out looking almost like recolors of black and white photos before I even opened them in photoshop which was a bit odd in the best way.

But wait there's more! A PO BOX finally wahoo!
First, a disclaimer: So many of you have kindly offered to send me things, including vintage items you may have inherited, and I am so honored you would think of me and of course I do adore vintage treasures, however, unfortunately I only have so much storage space currently! So there is a chance that if something just wont work for me, or doesn't fit me etc, that I may not be able to keep all of your lovely things. Please only send things if you are okay with the possibility that I may donate items I just cannot keep. If you would prefer I put things that I can't keep into the TCH Etsy shop to help raise funds for me and the channel, please specify this in a note or letter in your parcel. Thank you so much!

Thank you for watching!
I promise I ironed this skirt just before I left the house...but taffeta does as it desires!
I noticed those wrinkels and thought they add a "authentic" feeling to the dress. Sometimes those recreations look so shiny, so new - but they are clothing that's meant to be worn, and worn things have wrinkles!!!
Taffeta truly does have a mind of its own. I made a dress for my cousin's wedding, and I swear it became wrinkly after five minutes of ironing it, and being put into a dress form. I finally just gave up and dubbed it a 'design choice' lmao
I agree the wrinkles are appropriate. You appeared as though you had just stepped from a carriage to attend a tea party. 💖
Oh its stunning and I know all about taffeta and the obligatory wrinkles...theres nowt ye can do lass!
"... Taffeta darling!" * offers elbow*
The way I see it (which, I’m pretty sure I learned from my Theatrical Costuming professor), your work should only look as fine and “professional” as you need it to, as long as it’s secure and strong enough to be used for its intended purpose.
That sounds logical to me...it would have to because thats how I always go about projects.
This hat is the perfect topper for a gorgeous outfit! I love the way all the different elements come together to make something beautiful. Also, I really enjoy living vicariously through your hat making (it's not a thing I enjoy).
Thank you!
Just beautiful.
Thank you Samantha!
And once again, you're giving me Lana Parilla as 'Evil Queen' vibes 🔥
Stunning! Once again!!
Thank you!
Oh thanks, another project that you did that I have to try. At this rate, I may be done before 2025. Maybe. You are so awesome!
Thank you Barbara!
You are absolutely stunning in this video.
Thank you Kat!
Lovely hat. Where do you film your reveals it looks lovely xx
Thank you Heather! It's a local historic house that is mostly rented for weddings now a days, but has excellent art deco bathrooms inside as well 😂
It is so beautiful. Victorian hats (and many other aspects of women's dress) can be so wondrously maximalist in a way we don't often see today.
Ahem. Lady Gaga. 😆
Thank you Liz!
The costume and hat came out absolutely amazing (you're really feeding my unhealthy love for green with this, or maybe it's an obsession at this point)
Also living for the villain hair with this ensemble, along with the beautiful spiderwebs it just makes it so much more intriguing.
Can we talk about the gloves!
@@adamreynolds9816 Gloves are dead sexy! I always feel wonderful wearing them. I also stand taller and walk a little slower. Must be a mind thing!
Thank you! I've got to touch up my villain hair again soon here 😂🧛♀️
Beautiful! Love both the hat and the dress! Fyi the world science fiction convention is going to be in Chicago this year. Maybe a good opportunity to show off your creations, talk to like minded people and take some panels made for writers. Just a thought.
Good grief! I haven't been to a science fiction convention in over twenty years. I had a blast!
Thank you Donna! I'm far to introverted for these sorts of things sadly 😂
@@TheClosetHistorian you wouldn't be the only introvert there 🤫just a thought. U must do what's right 4 u. ( Fyi - thanks 4 the inspiration, I'm almost finished making a skirt and put a zipper on it, first time I've ever tried. )
@@donnashapleigh4863 I think that's absolutely 👍 Great!!
Absolutely stunning from the completed Mandragora day gown, beautifully matched hat and wonderful filming. The revel location & film sequence was perfect 😍
Thank you Christine!
You say your millinery is only theatrical as if that's a bad thing, honestly that's more millinery than most of us have ever been exposed to and most likely the only millinery most of us need. We're not needing to make haute couture hats, just ones that will look fabulous with our outfits. So you're doing us a huge service! Keep up the great work!
Thank you Flynn! Having been in classes with millinery teacher who took proper technique very seriously has obviously scarred me 😂
The hat looks *gorgeous* and the whole ensemble is just so perfectly victorian gothic. I love it!
Thank you Joelle!
Oh my goodness, I almost shed tears at the reveal the ensemble was so lovely. I didn't know I had a need for Victorian hat making, but now that I'm more knowledgeable I must make hats that would make even the sternest ladies of the Audubon Society cave!
Or maybe I'll just watch you do it.
Thank you Josiah!
there's just something so satisfying about watching the millenary process, even if i'm unlike to ever wear anything like this.
Your introductions to all of your costuming videos are absolutely wonderful!
Thank you Kathy!
Gorgeous work and colour. Love the dress, the music and the atmosphere of your closing scene. Very inspirational. You have talent girl!
Thank you Mary!
The twirls at the end! Such fun, and I love the giant moth!! 😍 🥰
Thank you! Twirling is too fun in giant skirts
I love how this hat came together! It looks like it's about to take flight in the best possible way.
Thank you Chae! I wanted it to have wings for sure 😂
Lovely hat! The reveal location looks awesome too and a nice fit for this gown.
Thank you Geri!
Absolutely gorgeous ! The editing is so well done and filming location is perfect! It is so interesting to see the process of hat making and your knowledge of it...many thanks!!
Thank you Margo! ❤
Honestly, I think the mark of a good craftsperson isn't necessarily getting it right, but making it look right even when you get it wrong (or are short on materials). Gorgeous job! And I'm considering making myself a hat... a canvas gardening hat, but still counts...
Edit, legit teared up when I saw the beadwork on the back
I wear hats 👒 while gardening also. I hope to make a swanky hat of my own someday soon!
And yes, the beading on the back of the dress was stunning!
Thank you!! 👒✨
Bravo! Yet again, another beautiful piece! I wish I had a modicum of your talent, I SO long to wear something this beautiful (we’ll worry about where to wear it TO at a later time! LOL)
Thank you Debi!
The hat really makes the outfit look complete!
So awesome Bianca!!! Was that the Highlands Ranch Mansion at the end? I loved the artistry of both your costume design AND your cinematography!!! Fantastic my dear!💜💜💜
Thank you! Indeed it was, the only historic house that allows photos with no issue in this dang state 😂
Your talent knows no bounds!
For thread that is constantly knotting while sewing, you can use thread heaven. It’s an awesome thread condition. And 1 purchase goes a long way.
I love, love that era. I watch series in That era just to see the clothing, car, home furniture and everything!
So beautiful...I am not a sewist at all but still find your videos very interesting and I have learned a thing or two. Love the reveal at the end. You are so creative x
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing the creative vibe, I do so hope it’s contagious! Hit up the natural history museum yet? ;) amazing intro btw
I got carried away with my comment and meant to say wonderful not wi but I really love the whole outfit
Following you in the process of making that gorgeous hat was so much fun, I would definitely be interested in seeing more of your millenarian adventures!
Thank you!
This is a truly beautiful hat, outfit, setting, look.
Thank you Roxie!
"Sew it together!" This line cracked me up!
Stunning. Absolute perfection.
Thank you Rachel!
Everything about this outfit is magical! Can’t wait to what’s next!
Thank you Dawn!
This looks like so much creative excitement! I look forward to watching over the weekend so that I can fully devote my attention to it! Back to you shortly! 🌍🌎🌏🎭🍒🍒Warmest wishes, Joanne
Absolutely stunning!!! Hats off to you my friend! I'll see myself out for that one... 🤦🏻♀️😂
Thank you Karinda! 👒
Such vibes on that opening ❤ and the reveal was also amazing! Gives me Crimson Peak vibes. I want to try milinary someday. So beautiful!
Thank you Danielle!
Bianca-you are BREATHTAKING in this ensemble. I am so proud of you.
Thank you so much Amy!
I don’t know diddly squat about millinery or sewing, but you are a wizard with the needle!!! Beautiful!!
Thank you Wendy!
You are my respite after a long and difficult day. This gown and hat are absolutely gorgeous! I am so glad that I came across your channel. You also inspired me to try adding a bit of vintage to my wardrobe, my son treated me to the Remix Vogue sandals for an early mother's day gift and I cannot wait to wear them! Thank you for being you! ❤️
Thank you Beth! That's a good son right there ✨
How is the writing coming ✍ ? Great opportunity to give your character some words when you did the reveal! When she turned and looked at us "..." 🤨💌
Alas my characters are pirates in a dystopian future who don't wear gowns, which is a bit disappointing I suppose 😂
Oh wow! The swooshes in the reveal sent chills down my spine. And no, it's not just because there is an oscillating fan behind me.
As per usual, I'm obsessed. I'm absolutely living for the period gown projects. Although I understand, they aren't your normal work, I love them nonetheless! 😍🥰
Thank you Violet!
I 💕 LOVE 💕 your hat videos! This hat turned out beautiful!
Thank you Samantha!
Would put beeswax on your thread help it so it doesn’t get caught in the fabric?
Wax it and then iron it. Makes it really smooth. Guttermann used to be high quality thread; these days, not so much.
“Why are they not answering the door?! Fine I’m leaving!” So dramatic I love it!
❤️that hat is perfectly ridiculous… just as it should be for the time. Well done.
Thank you Cynthia!
This is so beautiful. The colours and the trims are exquisite. You are so talented and your vlogs are so artistic.
Thank you Maureen!
Everything you make is so ornate! Love this hat especially 😍
Thank you Anne!
This came out fantastic! From top to bottom the whole thing came out great! Love the hat as well!
Thank you!
Any hat made without use of a glue gun is in my opinion “adequately couture”.
😂✨
OMG girl! That is gorgeous and makes the gown even more stunning!
Thank you!
You make me feel like I can make hats!! Wonderful work as always
Thank you Ceara!
Gorgeous....Love the beading in the back and the whole ensemble is chef's kiss beautiful.
Thank you Denise!
The hat looks so good with the dress. Wonderful. :}
Thank you! 💚
Hat's off to you, this was tops! 😁
Thank you Siansonea!
1. This is always so soothing and informational …and that intro is gorgeous.
2. I love your eyeshadow!
3. This is sooo pretty.
Thank you Josie! The eyeshadow is called Fairy Fire by Devinah cosmetics ✨
You must feel wonderful in your amazing ensemble! My nana made her own hats in the 1940's and '50's along with her own clothes. xxxxxxx
The hat finishes off such a lovely dress, just beautiful!
Thank you Julie!
Love love this hat! It's so yummy with the gown ensemble! I also really appreciate the make-do & piecing parts! I'm that way with a lot of projects and seeing alternative ideas is great!
Thank you Reina!
Congratulations on finishing the outfit! Don't feel that your athropoidal accroutrements are out-of-place or out-of-time; just today I was going through the second volume of *Fashions of the Gilded Age* and they had lovingly drawn brooches, earrings, etc. shaped like butterflies, beetles, and even flies!
Thank you! 🐞🕸🖤
I understand the techniques you are doing, I understand why you are doing it. Perhaps instead of "bad techniques", "very beginner techniques" would be a better choice of thinking about it.
🇨🇦😃 wonderful as always!
Thank you Anessa!
Magnificent! That hat is the perfect finishing touch to a stunning outfit.
Thank you Samantha!
Leeja miller just got her victorian mansion, you could colab 👀....
I want that dress to have a point down in the front at the waist or a belt with a buckle but that hat is stunning, the colors are amazing, the web work on the back of the dress was killer- nice surprise when you turned around, the overall silhouette of the dress is amazing- especially with your figure and you are about as gorgeous as they come- I hope you get to throw a Halloween era party and show it off! WOWZERS girly!
Simply stunning. The beading is gorgeous. The hat looks amazing, and I love all the feathers.
Thank you Lanet!
I don't know if it's historically accurate, but putting a line of skinny braid where the brim meets the pillbox would hide the raw edges, especially if you put a black braid on!
Gorgeous! When stuff snags on pins, I sink the tip of each pin into the fabric to hide it. This keeps me from repeatedly stabbing myself while sewing on quilt binding and the like 😂
I just finished a mid1890s bodice and skirt. It was inspired from a picture of my 2nd great-grandmother. I have plenty of scrap fabric to do a hat so this video has great timing. I’m also using your fabric rose tutorial to decorate the hat.
LOVE LOVE LOVE watching you do millinery.
Squeeeeeeeee I love all of this so so so much!
Thank you Shannon!
watching this again because it's so delightful. i love your millinery videos!
Spooky tea sounds like such a good time!! Halloween is my absolute favorite
It looks wi love the hat for a quick project it's terrific
Thank you Trudi!
I have had a fantastic hat in my mind for years… this is not helping me not get excited for making the hat 👒 it’s going to be a process. Do I need to sculpt a hat block for this one hat? I don’t know how to sculpt but I’m feeling like it might be necessary
Oh, Oscar owes you a little golden man 😂😂❤❤❤
You’re describing your process just fine ! Gorgeous!
With buckram you can steam iron layers together rather than sewing and they fuse together because of the sizing.
Love it! Such a beautiful hat to complete the Mandragora outfit.
Thank you Kathryn!
Your makeup is amazing! Any tutorials on some of those looks?
I feel like you'd fit into WA, but then I see this and i know you can't. Too muddy
Just magical 💚🪲🏰
Thank you Sinndy!
I love the colours you have on your eyes today! I mean you always look lovely but that multichrome you have on is just gorgeous! I have some micas and some multichrome powders so I may attempt to press something similar...knowing me it wont come out anything like it!
I don't believe there is one thing that you cannot do when it has to do with sewing. The dress...gorgeous...the hat...gorgeous! The only thing missing is a kick-ass parasol.
xoxo's Sandie
Thank you Sandie! I'd love a matching parasol, with a carved snake as the handle preferably 💚
@TheClosetHistorian how marvelous. Maybe you can find a craftsman to create one for you.
I love that you go all the way with your costumes! It makes them look so much more real
Thank you!
If you blessed to get house you do whole place in different shades of green.
Amazing! I have absolutely NO skills in making hats. This is why I am living vicariously through you!! And jewelrymaking...and pattern making....! 😉 it's a wonderful hat and looks great with the outfits!
Thank you Onesma ❤
SHES A GOSH DANG WIZARD!!!!! if you cant tell.... i love it....with all mah hart mah sole.....
Thank you Stevie!
I am learning alot on making hats and broaches thank you
Thank you so much for the care you put into the opening scene.
I am not worthy!( Bowing and salaming)
The colors with the outfit is amazing
I’m late to the party….the top of the hat is the crown
all shades of green are so becoming on you!!!
Thank you Laura! 💚
@@TheClosetHistorian you're welcome!
Wonderful love all 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩💖💖
