  • We grow huge, vigorous pumpkin plants but our female flowers turn yellow and pop off before they can open up and can have a shot at being pollinated. Big pumpkin plants, but no pumpkins. Help!

Here's my suggestions: keep the pumpkin vines consistently well hydrated and nourished (water deeply twice a day). Feed twice a week at half strength (organic or synthetic nutes), make sure you feed them magnesium, calcium and when starting to fruit Potassium and phosphorus (all flowers/fruit/berries need P and K to form correctly). Once the fruiting flowers start to form keep them directly off the ground and if very hot (over 85F) try and keep them shaded especially during the heat of the day. Most Pumpkins also need a minimum of 6 hours direct light...8 or more is better (check to see what your variety needs).
Powdery and downy mildew interfere with the plants ability to process sunlight and has the same effect as starving the plant. Keep these diseases in check the best you can. Good luck 👍😉

All you have to do is cut off the main
branch at about 8th feet of the creeper when it grows upto 9 feet..The secondary branches coming out will bloom female flowers 💐🙂..I'm from India 🇮🇳

Wow! Time flies. Been 4.5 years since I put this video out. Kids are older so have a little more time to breathe. Lots of harvesting has been done, but I've avoided pumpkins due to the limited space we have... but I think I'm going to give it a go again this year and I'll definitely cover a lot more items of how we pull our gardening together each year. Never honestly expected this video to get so many views and comments, but THANK YOU all. Some good questions, good tips and suggestions in there. Pretty sure we had a mixture of challenges holding us back. This year we'll tackle a number of them and see how we come out.

This may be a calcium issue. When theres not enough calcium in the soil the females just fall right off

Good thought and I’m definitely taking it into account. I’ll have an update on this year’s plant shortly. The vine seems to prefer to start and sustain female flowers outside of the raised bed. The bed is a custom compost and pete soil mix, that has little to no too soil or clay in it. Plus I was always afraid to fertilize after the plant was established. So some change here is probably in order. Thanks for the idea!

It’s just too hot for the plant.
I live in the Pacific Northwest and it has been hotter here than I can remember. It’s the first time I’ve had this same problem.
The vines should be around ten feet so it has enough energy to produce. Just leave the plant if it’s healthy and it will produce “fruits” when it cools down a bit. The ones I have under shade cloth are doing fantastic.
I’m also battling squash bugs on ALL of my squash Except butternut. 😖
I pray for patience until the cool weather and bugs stop laying eggs. 🥴

Try building up a large mound for them to cascade from the peak of, thus allowing them to install more nodal roots in good growth media

  • @orange8067

How I grow pumpkins is, when you first plant them they need lots of nitrogen so get a fertilizer which has a high nitrogen number (use as much nitrogen as the company recommends because nitrogen will also burn and kill the roots if you use too much), the nitrogen makes it grow faster and keeps the leaves green, then when you start seeing male flowers start using a phosphorus based fertilizer and slowly stop with the nitrogen, the phosphorus makes the plant produce more flowers, then when the female flowers start to come true switch to a potassium based fertilizer, this makes the fruit swell and grow better, it also makes the fruit hold more nutrients. I would recommend a "Sulfate of Potash" fertilizer for the stage of the pumpkin in the video.
If the female flower blossoms then i would recommend to hand polinate it because if there isnt enough bees around the female flower will die off like it is in the video.

    • @boblangford81
      @boblangford81 2 года назад +3

@@StanHowse That's the thing, there isn't a single link to a video which explains the answer. I had to piece together bits of information from multiple sources to figure out the answer.
For me the answer was the heat. It had simply been too hot for the female flowers to start being produced. Apparently female flowers typically don't sprout during high temps. You just have to be patient and you should start seeing female flowers after the temp start to dip.
If the temperature isnt too hot then the problem could be the soil. You may need to add bone meal, blood meal, or ash to fertilize your soil and get it the proper nutrients as pumpkin plants need a lot of nutrients. You can use whatever fertilizer you want but I prefer fertilizers with no chemicals AKA natural. I used a mushroom compost when I planted my pumpkin plants and so they had all the nutrients they could need. I did end up adding a little bone meal when it was super hot because I was unsure which I believe helped.
Another variable are insects. Watch for areas on your leaves which have been eaten and check underneath for bugs. I found that sunflower beetles were eating on my leaves, and stink bugs although they were not eating the leaves, they were causing the pumpkin plant to die. Once I got rid of the stink bugs the pumpkin plants started to flourish again.
Good luck and hope this helps.

I have the same problem. The female will make the fruit but the blooms are staying very small and do not open up. So I can't hand pollinate. And within just a couple of days they fall off. Also, I watched many videos on growing them and a lot of people are saying to keep the vines cut back to about 7-10 ft. If they grow longer than that, the plant doesn't have the strength to sustain the fruit.

Could be totally wrong here and more of a tip than help but I’ve found my females only open up from around 6:30-8am. As soon as the temp starts rising, the female curls right up. If I want out for in the early morning and had seen them open, I would have thought they never even opened by their appearance. Hope that helps!

@@cmtroutdoors thanks for the advice. I have already pulled up my pumpkin vines. My problem was that the pumpkin would set, have a small green bloom, but before the bloom could ever start to unfold the pumpkin would start turning yellow, dry up and fall off. I ended up with two pumpkins out of the six vines I planted. I guess I am not a pumpkin farmer. LOL. But honestly, all of my vegetables grew very strangely this year. Everyone I have talked to has told me that their gardens have not done well this year.

There's a number of possibilities, which is why I posted this video in the first place. I have honed in on three primary reasons: 1. pH of our water and soil. 2. Nutrients in the soil and how well the vine rooted into the soil to get those nutrients. 3. I believe I planted my vine too late, leading to the flowers trying to start up when it was already too hot. Going to change all three of these factors before next year.

COVID shut our livelihoods down, this year, and yet also increased our workload immensely. We fell behind on the garden and ended up pairing back to only grow Tomatoes, Jalapenos, and Banana Peppers. We had great crops and ended up doing a lot of canning, this year. We also had a good year in our strawberry patch. But we did not try pumpkins, in 2020.
