- Finally! It stopped raining! Here's what the pumpkin vines look like now. I've been using Epsom salt, compost tea and diluted urine as fertilizer and they're looking good. I'm not going to be planting much more as this house may sell soon, so we're in holding mode. Waiting for those pumpkins, though - I can't wait. Magnesium and sulfur make plants happy.

Well, it certainly pays to watch the video, right-to-the-end. My best pumpkins always came out of the scrap/compost pile. Won a blue ribbon one year at the Grange Hall.

You're totally right: magnesium and sulfur do make plants happy.
Magnesium is plant's equivalent of our iron: they make chlorophylls out of that exactly as we make hemoglobin. More chlorophylls = more photosynthesis = more green leaves.
Sulfur is more subtle: it is involved in protein synthesis. There is a nasty protein (D1) whose only role is to get destroyed by the light during photosynthesis and the plant has to build it back again and again... and again using tons of sulfur. So... "no sulfur" = "no photosynthesis" = "sad plant".
And BTW, magnesium and sulfur are actually "macro" nutrients so, yep! you're correct.

I am in Iowa, and last year the raccoons discovered our ripe watermelons. They would eat one every night. We had to put cages around them. Then my neighbor has Asian pear trees and they ate all his pears.

You forgot foliar spraying. I try to foliar spray my plants once a week. I mix together 1 tablespoon of epsom salt, 1 tablespoon fertilome 9-59-8 fertilizer and 1/2 teaspoon SEA90. It makes all my vegetables taste out of this world. People have commented that my watermelons and broccoli were the best they ever tasted. I sprayed my sweet potatoes this year for the first time. They are incredible tasting .

What do you recommend as far as Epsom salt per gallon ratio?
I am a first time accidental pumpkin grower. I just had a pumpkin from Halloween that rotted in the yard through winter and when spring came they just grew naturally. I started watering them and now I have a yard full of long vines.
There are 2 that are 10 feet long at least and one that is half the length but the leaves and main vine are twice as big in diameter. The leaf stems are fatter then my thumb. The shorter one that is super fat has one pumpkin growing so far, the first female flower opened 5 days ago and I pollinated it Manuelly and it took, it has been just about doubling in size every day. It has about 6 other unopened female flowers spread over the vine. Do the female flowers on the turshiary (I spelled that wrong) vines not get as big as the ones on the main vine? I want 2-3 pumpkins on the one vine, do I want them all to be on the main vine or is there any advantage to having them on the side vines?
One last question is there way for me to identify what strain of pumpkin I’m growing by the vegetative growth?

You shouldn't have to pollinate by hand if you have lots of weeds, trees, grasses, etc. nearby that sustain lots of pollinators.

My pumpkin patch exploded after pur huge firework show .. all that sulfur was falling into the patch from exploded fireworks.. no joke exploded

I have epson salt but it has added fragrance can instill use it on my pumpkins? Great video s. So sorry for your watermelons. This is my first time for pumpkins. Mine r yellow i live in California. Thank you for the information. I'm a first time pumpkin grower... it's embarrassing to say but I did not know that the flowers had to be pollinated in order to grow the fruit. They are two small pumpkin plants and for now, they are in a small container. Two weeks ago, though, they grew a bunch of yellow flowers and I thought out was just part of the natural process. It did not have as much leaves, nor was it that big. Due to the hot/dry weather, the leaves have been falling off, except for seven of them on the small vine. Will the pant ever flower again? do I still have a chance to have pumpkins by October this year?

A few Qs, where/what zone are you? I'm in Jax. You plant on someone else's property? There are a few properties around me that never see a soul - no house, no humans - can I plant some pumpkins? I mean, I guess I can toss a few seeds over the property line, but.....and 2 more: 1) looks like these are in the shade/dappled sun, I thought Seminoles needed full sun (maybe that's why mine are still suffering after being planted in March and here it is end of July with nothing but 8 leaves...heading to the bathroom for my Epson right now!). 2) How do you weed/trim between the vines - my grass is thigh high!

I planted Seminole pumpkin seeds this season for the first time (I am in Western Palm Beach County, South Florida). They are producing male flowers and the female flowers will be opening real soon as well. I'm concerned though about the vine because the leaves at beginning of the vine are all gone. I think it was powdery mildew. Should I cut the vine where the damage is, since the vine has rooted all along its length?
No, just let it go. There may still be good roots in the earlier sections of the vine.

Yes, definitely suitable. The taste will improve as minerals increase.
Hey boo 👻 Really great video footage, we put Epsom in when we moved 3 vines after they were getting 4-5 feet long.
Our question is should we add more salt 🧂 now? We don’t have pumpkins 🎃 on most vines YET. I trimmed off extra and cleared all the dead.

Any advice on ridding my garden of those damned vine borers? I see that your pumpkins have recovered. My squash and cucumbers were devastated this summer. Compost Everything is great btw. My wife got it for me.
Thank you. Rotating chickens through the area between plantings may help. Some years the borers are really bad, though. I'm still fighting them. I plant varieties that root vigorously at all the nodes and that helps some.
just pull out all that crab Bermuda grass out and with watermelons water 2x a day you'll be fine. Use neem oil too and heavier stuff for the vine burrowers. but don't use sevens dust it blocks light from getting to the leaves learned that the hard way don't use powder ever. Ortho liquid vine borer killer- that shit rocks :) Slow release food pellets... throw some in now by Oct BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I gave my plants 1 tablespoon to 1 Gal PPM'S were well over 1500. A week later instantly too much.. I'd suggest a ppm meter

Since reading "Gardening When it Counts," we have added epsom salts to our vegetable gardening beds before planting, but I realize now we should be adding more through the season. I think you are right, just adding a 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer is incomplete and to be avoided, really . When Mg and S are in short supply in the soil, the best way to add it would be epsom salts, but ideally one would hope that after some time, the soil would become richer and more easily sustained without the need for chemical inputs. It would be good to know which plants are Mg and S-fixers, so they can be used as mulch/fertilizers.
So, I went looking to find an answer on possible Mg-fixers and bumped into this article:

You're right. I believe a lot of the minerals can be recycled and "locked" by good accumulators. "Gardening When it Counts" is one of my favorites.
Only way I've been able to have watermelon is by adding sand to the potting mix. Don't know why it works, never heard of watermelon liking sandy soil.
All I know is that sand (in small amounts) helps worms fertilize the soil better. And if your soil is not well-drained, a little sand can help.
Its scary to use epsom salt. Its a nutrient but also can kill and eat a tree stump

This is why fossil beds made of phosphate are the best to grow fruit trees and plants on, the farmers bought all the phosphate and sold to the miners, but most citrus groves are on the phosphate fields.
The phosphate is great for fruit.

I do have a question. My female pumpkin is very healthy, the fertilized fruit is I mean. But the flower fell off prior to naturally falling off and it looks like it healed its self over night. Do you think it will be ok? It has even grow over night about the size of a softball now
