    For me this is the most well-done RUclips videos I have viewed on the Mini from the point of view an everyday regular person user. Not just because the production values are excellent but realy because the care in how honest the review of the machine itself and the user experience. Well done, glad I took the time to watch.

    This is a very well made video. The measured commentary is great; some people just try to say too much, too quickly. It's obvious that you are a meticulous person: the sound, the lighting, the production and editing are first rate.
    The LMLM seems to be a near perfect home espresso machine. Thanks for all the information.

    I love the aesthetics of this machine (and your coffee nook 😉), BUT having to heat 3.5 liters of water to 120°C every single morning just to steam 100mls of milk is a no-no for me. Not good for the environment 😎

    Thanks Simon for the comprehensive review. I found myself nodding along quite a few times with regard to your reasoning for selecting the mini, not the least of which is the relative simplicity of use and analogue design aesthetic, unencumbered by flow/pressure profiling bells and whistles, while still providing the reassurance of rock solid commercial build quality. E61 groups tend to all rather look the same, and although I'm quite a fan of their look, the more minimalist approach taken by LM with their integrated group, allows them to come up with a rather unique homage to their Linea Classic.
    Anyway, just wanted to drop in and say well done, you come across as considered and articulate and at this price level, it ultimately is not going to be able to be something one can justify on the basis of economics or even drinkable espresso. It is more about the overall package, how it makes you feel when you look at it, use it and if you enjoy the experience as much as the output. Rather I suspect like driving an Aston Martin as opposed to a Ford Fiesta. They'll both ensure you get to where you want to be, but will provide completely different experiences in doing so.
    As an aside, you should watch one of Roger Barnes' dinghy cruising video's on YT...you'll understand why!

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  2 года назад +8

      That's a reasonable comment. As with most things, after a certain price point it isn't going to necessarily affect the overall taste. You're essentially paying more for quality, convenient features and branding. A lot of people argue that you're better putting money into a good grinder first and foremost. There's obviously much cheaper and more accessible machines that will still produce great coffee, I hope to be able to check some of them out in future videos. Thanks for your kind feedback!

    • @pageup213
      @pageup213 2 года назад

      At this price, it' mainly for those that can afford to throw that money away and want to put in the time learning to brew coffee like a Barista. Most of us will settle for lesser machines for home use and just go to a proper café when we want something better (7k is a lot of café visits).

      It’s just like any other hobbies. Most ppl won’t go past the point of diminishing return. Yet, there’s a huge market for things like $8000 carbon bikes, $2000 fishing rods, $6000 espresso machines, etc and for a lot of enthusiasts these prices are reasonable. I mean linea mini isn’t even the highest priced home espresso machine.

    • @emjbee101
      @emjbee101 2 года назад +5

      For something you use every day it doesn’t seem too crazy. When I dropped £1,700 on my Rocket R58 back in 2015 it seemed crazy, but I’ve easily made 7,000+ coffees on it and the only days I don’t use it are when I’m not at home. They are £2,440 now and if I was in the market for a new machine I wouldn’t think twice about it as that’s what a premium product like that costs.
      If you can afford a machine like this, go for it I’d say. Will give years of enjoyment of use and produce excellent coffee if coupled with a decent grinder.

      Great review of this machine. I have a breville dual boiler and what it lacks in build quality and reputation in more than makes up for in features and pricing, and produces a great espresso never the less this is a beautiful machine but if i was going to spend that kind of money i would expect this kind of build quality along with atleast the features of my dual boiler. So long as you enjoy brewing and the taste of your coffee is what realy matters

    I’ve got one. My family recently visited, including my three kids and their significant others. That meant brewing eight drinks back-to-back twice a day, including larger lattes. The 3.5L steam boiler was fully up to the task. A 1.5L machine would have been overwhelmed. Instead, I was able to serve top quality drinks topped with art from drink 1 to drink 8. The big boiler really sets this machine apart.

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  2 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comment! You’re totally right. You must be a good barista, though! Since I only have a single dose grinder the rate limiting step would always be me rather than the lines mini.

    • @JonFairhurst
      @JonFairhurst 2 года назад +2

      @@SimonDrysdale - I also have a single dose grinder, the Niche Zero. And I am truly the limiting factor. My previous machine was a single boiler with 1.5L. The boiler pressure would be low by the end of a large drink or multiple small ones. With the Mini, it has no problem keeping ahead of me. New baristas can learn to make their favorite drink well pretty quickly. With time we can grow the menu. It’s latte art that is never perfected. I will always be learning. It takes time and practice. With the Linea Mini, good pitchers, and good cups, I know that the rest is up to me. With the 1.5L machine, I could never get the texture just right.

      @@JonFairhurst Not trying to start a discussion, just wanted to say for other readers (since this was marked) that I am a little confused by this comment, I have certainly heard of steaming problems on single boiler machines. I had one, with a 325ml boiler, and that was considered a large boiler for a SB.
      Are you sure you aren't mixing up different machines? If you have had a single boiler and experienced trouble steaming, I would think it might have been a less than 0.325 Liter machine? To my knowledge 1.5L SB machines do not exist.... Does not make sense to hav that large a brew boiler?
      1.5Liters is what I have in my Bianca, and I don't experience any sort of steam loss? The boiler recovers in seconds.

    • @JonFairhurst
      @JonFairhurst 2 года назад +1

      @@esbenrasmussen4289 I had a Livia 90 (heat exchanger) with a 1.3L boiler, and the steam capability was my biggest complaint. I didn’t want to buy a stepping stone machine, so I went with the Linea Mini. I knew that there would be no risk of inadequate steam with such a large boiler, and I’ve not been disappointed. I can hammer out very large drinks one after another. (I prefer small milk drinks, but some guests are super sizers!)
      Doing the math, 1.5L is about 50oz, so if you’re making a 20 oz behemoth, you’re heating 40% of its capacity. That’s a lot of steam.
      I agree that 1.5L is likely enough for most people. I just wanted to avoid the risk of being disappointed with my purchase.
      I gave my oldest son the Livia 90. The difference between the steaming times between it and the Linea Mini is almost comical. It feels like having a commercial machine on my counter.

    Just curious if you thought about the Olympia Cremina lever? Sadly for me, I was
    getting my Delonghi Dedica in 2019 repaired and it happened to be at Cerinis in the Bronx. BTW Arthur Ave in the Bronx up near fordham is a fantastic mini Little Italy. Very very cool. Anyway Cerini is a main distributor of Olympia machines. And naturally they offered me an espresso from a Cremina. I pulled the shit and it was the single greatest coffee moment of my life. Like drinking anWriss beer in the Black Forest. The heavens shone down upon me and the angels started singing. I am waiting to be able
    To afford a Cremina. It seems like you have the same experience with your La Marzocca. Very nice video.

    For me the only problem with the Mini is lack of flow control. I think the price is completely justified except for that single fact. Flat 9 bat profiles tend to be too harsh, especially with lighter roasts.

    Also eyeing this machine but haven't pulled the trigger because of its price tag.
    The main thing that interests me is actually not mentioned in your video but is a great selling point IMO: "Kaffeemacher" showed on their channel (video in german) that the temperature stability of this machine is unprecedented. It is not even rivaled by some of the much more expensive machines, even by LM themselves (think GS3 or Strada), with little to no trade-off in reproducibility (temperature differences between shots).
    If you're interested in flow control you might want to check out the needle valve mod for the Linea Mini. (Gear pump exists too but I suspect this would be more of a hassle to complete.)

    Just got back from trekking in Nepal and in the Everest region the tea houses try to attract customers by having these expensive Italian machines. I was taking this great coffee for granted until I reached the village of Gokyo at 4800m, and the machine was broken at the otherwise very nice tea house I was staying. Talking to the owner, he said the machine cost $7000, plus the cost of flying it in by helicopter! To fix it, he had to fly in a repairman from Kathmandu, who then had to hike 4 days from Lukla to get there. He was a day away during my stay. As a substitute, we made really good Turkish-style coffee instead. IMO, it was 95% as good and didn't require such an exorbitant investment or repair.

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  2 года назад

      Sounds like quite the adventure. That does sound like an extreme expense and effort to go to for the sake of a coffee machine, but they must find it to be worth it business wise. Turkish style coffee is definitely a good alternative. Cheers for the comment.

    I read people’s comments that the LM LM is not good because one cannot do flow profiling. Is that really such a big deal or is flow profiling over rated?

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  5 месяцев назад +1

      In my mind flow profiling is mainly important when it comes to pre-infusion. I don't really think it adds much during the actual extraction phase. Whether or not it is a big deal for you probably depends on the type of beans you enjoy. If you prefer light roasts you will probably want a longer pre-infusion, the darker you go the less important it is.
      Having said that, I think the best results are obtained from a combination of flow and pressure profiling.
      All of this really depends how much of the rabbit hole you want to go down; the LMLM makes excellent espresso, but it's just less customisable and flexible than something like a Decent DE1.

The only downside would be the single group head but I know cafes that use single group machines. The machine could comfortably brew all day as long as it’s plumbed in but I wouldn’t be able to quantify how many drinks you could prepared daily. Best of luck!

I think this is important as the linea mini's competitor such as Victoria Arduino E1 doesn't have that protruding bolt on the shower screen. Great review thanks. The light roast/dark roast thing is mostly a pre-infusion pressure thing. Does the Mini have any features related to pre-infusion pressure? Lighter the roast the more pre-infusion pressure you'll want. We looked at the Mini, the Arduino Eagle One Prima and Londinium R24. All are great really. I really liked the Eagle One in lots of ways but ultimately went with the Londinium because, well the Eagle One is 2800watts. This is stressing the circuit a bit in this neck of the woods :(. They're all great. I would be happy with either really but I've always wondered about the Mini (road I didn't go down etc etc). The lever is a minimalist approach to espresso and it was also a little cheaper than both the Mini and Eagle One. It is pretty awesome though. Something about lever machines that makes unique espresso. Maybe it's the way the pressure tapers off towards the end of the shot ever so slightly I don't know. Most importantly it has pre-infusion controls which allows for more scope across the different types of roasts you might buy. Oh you forgot to mention that without a grinder there is no espresso haha. You're paying $5400 USD for the Mini and another $1500 for the grinder. I bought a Mahlkonig but because the Londinium was a little cheaper I think the whole thing probably ended up around the cost of the Mini. Good call on the skill though. Most people don't appreciate this. Again, great review mate. Cheers.

    I love the linea mini, that’s my endgame goal. I got a breville dual boiler last September and a Ceado E6 flat burr 64mm grinder. Took me a good couple weeks to produce a consistently good flat white with decent micro foam. Would love to grab a Linea mini once my BDB craps out in a couple years

      @@richardwalley2862 correct my Breville was bulletproof reliable for the years that I owned mine and more so than my Rocket Cellini that required two major repairs over the past 8 years. Still, both machines made decent espressos and lattes and both together cost less than the La Marzocco LM. To me the La Marzocco is for rich cool kids who want to show off their machines on social media. ECM and Rocket make as good machines for less money. The Rocket R Nine One has more features in same price range. If one is spending 6k plus on a coffee machine, why not get the Dalla Corte Mina or Slayer?

    I agree with every word you said. I got mine around a month ago (also in white) along with a Lagom P64 and Acaia Lunar scale. I also purchased a drip tray from Espresso Solutions that allows the Lunar to sit in, providing more cup clearance and a permanent home for the scale. I plumbed my machine in which elevated the experience even further - your setup may not permit this however. This setup allows me to get coffee that is as good or better than my best local third wave cafe. I have been blown away!

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  2 года назад

      Thanks for the comment! You have good taste.
      I am definitely interested in looking at the drip tray that has room for the Acaia lunar, would definitely help with clearance for larger mugs. I would love to plumb in my machine because even though the water tank is large, it's always tedious changing the water. However, sadly in this kitchen it's not feasible. If I ever design my own kitchen I'll definitely bare that in mind.
      Glad you're enjoying your setup as much as I am!

    Enjoyed the video Simon - my espresso journey seems similar to yours - recent convert from consumer only to hobbyist. This was one of my shortlisted machines but in August last I took delivery of a Decent XXL 1.43 - if you want data and digital control that’s a great machine. Amazing if you are a beginner - so much feedback. Look forward to more videos from you.

      Thanks for watching and your comment! Definitely seems we have a similar journey so far.
      I actually was very close to buying a Decent when I bought the Linea mini, part of the reason I didn't just at the time I was about to order they had a huge amount of orders and their waiting list went up to 6 months or something and I was too impatient. I was going to mention that in the video but it was starting to get too long! Would definitely love to try out the Decent in the future.
      What grinder are you using out of interest?
      Yeah definitely stick around, more videos will be coming soon, cheers!

      I would recommend white imo because for me it is more an eye catcher :)
      I would also prefer the mini instead of micra because the micra is way to small for me. If you put the machines side to side you will realize the more value of Linea Mini. If I am thinking about the portafilter, bahhhh.:) For me it is also important to have very good steam power. I do not think that the micra will have such amount of power like the mini. I love the steaming power of Mini.

    I am not able to froth my milk properly. Half a turn introduces too much air/heat. So far, zero success in ~100 cups.

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  2 года назад

      I had the same issue, if you are steaming for just one drink in the provided milk pitcher I only turn from the 2 position to about the 10 position, so less than half, even then if I don't pay enough attention then I can introduce too much air.
      I bought a bigger pitcher to practice with more milk first which also helped, although it is a bit of a waste of milk.
      Some people online have changed the milk steaming tip from four holes to one with three, but I haven't tried that myself. Good luck, persist and you'll get there!

      Thanks for the feedback. This is actually something I should have highlighted in the video but didn't realise it whilst I was making it. Where I am from, our household voltage is 240v, so the machine can pull more power. It's possible that the people that are reporting a slower heat up time are from the USA which has a standard voltage of I think 110v, meaning a slower warmup time.
