    Thanks for the video! Extremely informative. As far as water goes, I've been using a place near my house that sells water by the gallon and they have filtered, oxigenated and alkaline. I found the alkaline water had great performance with my machine and zero to no buildup in the tank. It costs me about $10 for 5 gallons and I just take 3 5 gallon tanks every couple weeks or so and save all that plastic coing into the trash while drinking great espressos. Just a note to add it as another option!

    Thanks for your review. I have had my Linea Mini for just over a year. I love it! Best lattes ever and it happens everyday. One item I was surprised that needed to be replaced so quickly for home environment is the vacuum breaker. I pull espressos 2.3X per day since I’ve gotten the system and use a 3-stage water filtration system (passes LM hardness test). I’ve had the gurgling/hissing sound and water pooling under the system for 3-4 months now. When I messaged LM, the technician said it was normal for this to wear out every 6-18 months. You didn’t mention this in your cost of ownership (in fact, it wasn’t mentioned at all). Do you have any comments? Thanks again!

    Most people who watch your stuff probably can't even afford the decent. You could get a super nice machine that can do more modern espresso really well that a lot of people don't get to use or see, or you could get a used gaggia classic and do $500 dollars of mods and do videos on that process. The decent would also be really cool.

    Another water option is an undersink reverse osmosis filter ($200 up front with $40 a year for carbon filter media and $55 every three years for the RO membrane). You could fill a glass gallon jug with the water (with a TDS of 5 to 15ppm) and add a Third Wave packet or GC Water solution to that jug. Same level of work as distilled water from the store, without the plastic waste.

    I find this so confusing. 7 years later my gaggia classic's pump died, and cost like $30 to replace. That and 1 group head gasket were the only wear and tear parts it needed. How can this machine, which ought to be expertly engineered and using only the best materials, need so much maintenance in a home use environment?

      I would assume that this machine would get more work than in a home environment, as it’s used for experimenting and content creation.
      Also I think Spro would change things more often as it’s a business and as a preventative measure and ensure quality of production is optimum.
      Also it will depend if the machine is left on for extended hours or 24 hours. The constant heat will wear out group seals quicker.

    • @mechingtouch826
      @mechingtouch826 3 года назад +3

      For home setting, I think we tend to under-maintain the machine, given in most cases the resale value of home grade machines is not much anyway. But a working machine doesn't equate to a well-maintained machine. For a machine like this, a well-maintained one is likely to command a very decent resale value and will be appreciated in the case of planning for an upgrade down the road.

    Thanks for great content! I run a GS/3 at home. I'm not a plutocrat, I'm an airline pilot who helped out a friend who got hammered in divorce court by buying his GS/3 for pennies on the dollar. I've found my operating costs lower than those described in the video but my machine doesn't work nearly as hard. Marzocco parts are not unreasonably expensive but labor costs are, frankly, obscene. The A&Ps who maintain jet engines make less money than the guy who replaced my pressure relief valve a few weeks ago.
    Would I have bought my machine for the retail price? Hell no. The diminishing returns curve is way too steep for that. In my view, someone who drops >$7K for a machine to use strictly at home is not buying espresso excellence, they are buying bragging rights.

    I have a LMLM which I've recently modified for preinfusion when the paddle is in the middle position (using a needle valve). Gicleur changed for a lower water debit, pressure dropped to 7 bar (personal preference). This basically turns this machine into a Slayer. Did you think of doing this to your machine also? I think it opens up a lot of posibillities. I'm now pretty much able to extract ultra light brew roasts in espresso.

      I’ve definitely seen and considered going this route, but what tends to run through my head is what happened when I modified a car.
      Was it faster, yes, better, maybe, but less reliable and comfortable to use on a daily basis, absolutely.
      So I’ve kept the modifications within the range of LM recommendations, same with my current car and neither has let me down yet (knock on wood).
      So I would rather consider a machine with these capabilities out of the box, as the builder and manufacturer intended.
      That said I’ve had great luck with light roasts on the mini, but attribute a lot of that success to proper grinders.

    • @JusBThankful
      @JusBThankful 3 года назад

      @@Sprometheus would you consider a grinder upgrade alongside a new machine? It may widen your audience and not marginalize your base to maybe keep the Niche, and run it alonside a Titan class big flat grinder. Extra work, sure, but nobody else is "that guy" really doing stuff like that.

    • @flipu2k
      @flipu2k 3 года назад +1

      @@Sprometheus That's a valid point, and I partly agree with it. However the Linea Mini is very simple and sturdy on the inside and this mod is a relatively minor addition in the hydraulic circuit (that's completely reversible). Nothing complex and electronic, I doubt there's much that can go wrong with it.
      I agree the Linea Mini does great with light roasts if paired with a good grinder, I had no issues either (I'm using a bentwood vertical 63). But with the added "slayer-like" preinfusion it's on a different level, you can make great shots by using even filter roasts. Obviously, if this is not your "cup of tea" then there's no point in upgrading it, it does great as standard.

    Finally got my Mini a couple of months ago. Right out of the box, the quality of the espresso and the milk were higher than from my Livia 90 heat exchanger. The pulls are much more consistent and the milk is night and day better. With family visiting during the holidays, I never out-paced the boiler. I’m a home barista, not a mad scientist, so I have zero regret about choosing it over a GS3 or a Decent. I hate wasting coffee, so I just make an educated guess on recipes, drink and serve. Based on the results, I’ll make small adjustments to the recipe and enjoy the results. The Niche and Mini are really consistent, so these adjustments area a fairly linear (ha!) path, compared to the guesswork with my previous machine.
    My initial challenge was steaming with so much power. I was doing the “halfway back and a quarter to the side” thing, but after adding air, the milk would want to spill over. Pointing more at the side caused the milk to spin faster, and the centrifugal force would whirlpool the sides too high. Point down, and the milk would roll high and get out of control. Turns out, I was tilting the top of the pitcher towards the machine. By pushing the bottom of the pitcher to be vertical or even to lean back fixed the problem. Still, in the supplied pitcher, I need to use just the right amount of liquid. I weight my oat milk now.
    Anyway, great machine. Looking forward to seeing what pops up in the Spro lab next. It will be cool to see comparisons between the wild shots and reference shots from the Mini.

    I am not sure how much value you put on the machine aesthetics but for something that has such a prominent place at your bar/home, I would (am) consider that quite a bit.
    There are newer machines like Eagle One Prima, Sanremo You and Cube and Slayer that are wonderfully designed. Not just an industrial brick like my Profitec, or ECM or Lelit etc. It's debatable how much of an upgrade each of them would be versus Linea Mini. Which has nice look if maybe more industrial than I prefer.

      @@TheCoffeeField there are a few things that I like: cool touch wand, IoT capabilities, quietness, and steam power, large drip tray. It is narrower than the BDB but much deeper. The things I like the BDB more are: cup warmer is hotter, startup time is faster, not as deep, shot timer, shot buttons, backflush and descale programs, low water warning, reservoir window, reservoir refill without taking off drip tray, temp setting, steam temp setting, shot counter, pressure gauge at up top.
      I wouldn’t consider a LMLM an upgrade generally except in build quality. I think functionality wise, the BDB is a more capable machine. The only machine I would consider trading it for would be a lever or Decent.

    Even though your LMLM machine is fairly high-end for the home user, the way it functions (and your content) is still relatable to most home espresso machine users.
    If you upgrade to a machine such as the Decent or Slayer, etc. which do 'things' in a way most other espresso machines cannot, it seems as if most of your viewers are shut out of participation (i.e. their machines simply cannot 'do that' thing). If you were to get and experiment with a Decent, for example, only those who own a Decent will benefit (unless the goal is to sell a few Decent machines).
    People are amazed by how much a LMLM costs these days (and it sticks to basic espresso stuff regardless of some bells and whistles, so your observations derived from it still apply to most home machines) but some of the machines people are suggesting you upgrade to are even far more expensive and niche. Particularly, imo, the Decent; as remarkable as it is, it is designed for endless tinkering, not making efficient, repeatable, delicious espresso. Know this is probably not any help, but just offering a 'perhaps useful' perspective.
    Good episode, by the way. Much appreciated.

    • @BensCoffeeRants
      @BensCoffeeRants 3 года назад

      Most people find a profile they like and stick with it, it CAN be used for simple efficient repeatable delicious espresso as you said, although I would feel like you're missing out without using it to experiment and get different results with the same coffee!
      If you use one profile you don't even need to use the tablet.

    Would love to see a showdown of “grail” or “endgame” machines (3 to 6k range) like the Decent, Eagle One, LMLM, Pro700/ECM, bianca, verve, R60, etc. Buying them all would be prohibitively expensive, but maybe a mix of companies, shops, and fellow content creators would lend them to you for the purposes of such a video!
    Would be a nice opportunity for you to also review them individually and bang out like 4 to 7 videos in quick succession, which would allow for a very well deserved vacation afterwards ;)

  • @stephengoldberg7609
    @stephengoldberg7609 3 года назад +7

    Feel like the Decent has the most potential for exploration, but it’s also so niche (yeah yeah) and I’d be concerned you’d end up being a long term advertisement for Decent as opposed to the independent content creator you are today. In some respects, the LMLM allowed you to be independent because it has so few options/variables that you could avoid constantly talking about it. Maybe a spring lever machine would work well for keep the variables low while adding a different element to your content. I’ve been curious to learn more about the Londinium. Also think the new Spring Lever Cremina is nice but wouldn’t use it on your channel since it’s not a 58mm PF and you do so many videos that require a standard PF basket. Anyway, I’m excited to see what you end up deciding!

    • @Sprometheus
      @Sprometheus  3 года назад +2

      I get you, this is a good point. But some would argue that I was just a long term ad for LM.
      Regardless of the machine that inevitably will be the centerpiece of all my espresso focused content, it’s important to me that I keep the content approachable by those working on a variety of machines.
      To be honest, I think I’m actually in the minority in that respect and have a machine that can’t do what many other folks are doing both on and off the espresso mainstream. In my mind it’s basically just catching up to the times.
