The story of the daydream about Dove and Storm reminded me of C. S. Lewis's inspiration for the Narnia series of novels - the picture of a faun carrying wrapped Christmas presents across a snowy, lantern-lit clearing... sounds to me like a similar kind of inspiration in both cases (seeing the image and then developing the story behind it)...

The best memories i have of my brother and father are because of you and others like you. The joy, pain, and laughter you have brought to my life is immeasurable. The stories ive heard, read and now tell are all from a place of hope and love taught only by pen and paper, and the luck of the dice. In a few weeks my son will roll his first dice. Ill guide him through the all realms and teach him the power of words. All because of you and others like you. From one human to another i thank you for all your hard work and love. I hope i can instill just a fraction of the love i feel when i roll the dice into my children. Once more traveler i thank you. Long live the Great Sage. Thank you once again Ed and Ivan for your continued work and drive to provide not just knowledge, but knowledge in a most intriguing attention-grabbing, and ever so enjoyable manner. Something I find to be unique in the manner you do so, that has me seeking all the more for untold knowledge to be shared. I myself, provided you Ed as well as of course Elminster find the time to answer it, have an inquiry I wish to offer to the both of you. For Ed, I ask you this: If one of The Seven ever had a child who showed an aptitude for magic and the possibility to be trained in such an aptitude, much like The Seven were, how would Mystra, Elminster, The Seven, as well as any other chosen of Mystra you wish to make mention of, react as well as how they would respond to this development? My inquiry is fairly similar to the one above for Elminster, in that I'm curious as to how he would in his point of view feel and respond to such a development, as well as his thoughts behind it. I ask as I'm playing a character within a similar situation as this for his backstory, and while of course I wish to understand such matters in hopes to work them into my backstory and the role play that comes from it, I'm also incredibly curious to understand these matters all the more from a lore and fan perspective, as Mystra and her history has always interested me greatly as a player and person. Many thanks once again for all that you Ed, Ivan, as well as of course Elminster do for all of us, as well as the knowledge you share unto us, as it's both a great privilege and joy I look forward to weekly expanding my own personal knowledge all the more upon. Thank you again and please do take care.

Many of the Seven have had children (Alustriel has had many) and the most important thing for all of the Seven has consistently been: their children must have as free a choice as they can provide as to what lives they'll live, and who they'll be, not automaticlly "replacement Chosen."

@@edgreenwoodofficial I see (thanks for the reply!). You have (somewhat) competing interests, then (wanting people to have fun writing them, but also wanting to read books written as if they came from your mind), which makes me wonder if the balance isn't somewhere in the middle.
On that note, the WGA (Writers Guild of America) has recently secured a contract that ended their strike, which says "a writer can choose to use AI when performing writing services, if the company consents and provided that the writer follows applicable company policies, but the company can't require the writer to use AI software (e.g., ChatGPT) when performing writing services". It's possible to make a human/AI hybrid story, as long as you're prompting the AI for ideas/incremental steps, and not asking it to write a whole book.
Finally, a bit more philosophical consideration: I think I understand the longing for human involvement and for people to have fun with the Realms (that's probably why you became a writer), but there's really not a guarantee that if a person did something, they did it for fun. Also, even if there were no people having fun when a Realms book was written (because it was AI-generated), people could still have fun reading it (assuming the AI did a good job). Either way, your legacy would still go on, though perhaps not in the way you envisioned it (or expected it to happen). Of course, I don't mean to invalidate your feelings; I just wondered if your purpose could be achieved in a different way (or if there was a different purpose that you could still be happy with if it was achieved).

Oh, yes. He loves French Vanillas. He hates the modern corporate Timmie's, because he loved chatting up the old ladies on staff when they made sandwiches fresh...and even more, he hates the "when the frozen dough we were sent runs out, so do those flavours of donuts." As he complained to me last time, "Doesn't anyone know how to bake from scratch, any more?" When I tried to explain to him about centralized control and cost efficiencies, he gave me a glare and a word that describes the dung of male cows. ;} And then muttered, "How rich is rich enough? Hmmm?"

Its ok to have pride in your work but you are making story for others not just your vision, alas bethesta (and others) downfall continued and is tottally corporate now
But i do miss the times they shared ed vision in story telling, hope he lives forever because they dont make them like that anymore.

Judging by his assaults on my larder, he LOVES ice cream. And strong drink of the Amaretto, Bailey's, and sherry variety, not to mention certain gins and whiskeys. So the taste of what he's indulging in is obviously a strong part of his preferences.

@edgreenwoodofficial Can you please tell me who would win in a fight between Karsus or Ioulaum? Im assuming Iolaum would have been just as capable of The 12th level avatar spell but wasnt silly wnough to attempt what Karsus did. Barring 12th level spells. Who would win this titanic matchup and why. Its been something i need to know please

Such fights always depend on the circumstances, but Ioulaum is a better magic-crafter than Karsus, and was ALWAYS far better prepared, so I'd say Ioulaum.

@edgreenwoodofficial Thank you sir, I hope to see Ioulaum again one day. I always imagined The returned Netherese before the fall trying to recruit Ioulaum, Aumvor, Larloch and others to bring back the glory days. I would have liked to see Ioulaum stand on his own and just say NO.

@edgreenwoodofficial Also if i may, The Imaskari Artificers against The Netherese in ancient days. The timelines didnt really allow the two to be at odd but as much as I love the Netherese im perplexed on who might have the greater command of magic. On one hand the Netherese made flying enclaves and could churn out magic items almost at will BUT without the mythallars, they were effectively useless which i feel would lead to an over reliance on such measures leaving one vulnerable. The Imaskari Empire however discovered demiplanes and actually crafted items among other great feats. The Netherese surely advanced whatever theories were handed down but had many conveniences the Imaskari did not. Some of the Imaskari lore just BEGS to be explored. Mind you, the source material for what i do have for ancient netheril was fantastic, the Imaskari lore seems lacking. All in all id love to hear thoughts from the man himself who created the beloved realms and how these two powerhouse stack up to one another

This is why the forgotten realms are awesome. Gygax and Greenwood lived lives. This is also why writers today for the most part are terrible. When your only experience in life is liberal arts classes and twitter outrage…… what do we expect?

Counter point there are good modern writers, just as there were bad writers back in the day. We just only remember the good stuff. We just don't have the benefit of time to separate the wheat from the chaff
Collectively we remember Lovecraft, but (outside of the context of a specific modern group) ignore L Ron Hubbard.

    • @mikewaterfield3599

@@beowylfen L Ron Hubbard was a lunatic and a one off. I would argue today the vast majority of writers have forgotten how to create fiction. They only know how to inject themselves and narrow transplanted world views. Essentially fan fiction has become main stream. My chief argument? Star Trek. Fewer writers made the entirety of DS9, TNG, and Voyager and the hundreds of episodes than those who worked on one season of the aptly named STD. Writing by committee is a terrible idea.

Seems a little addlepated in re that it shouldn't be written with boys/men in mind. Boys/men are ur vast majority of readers/buyers. Twould be silly to alienate ur audience.

I think what he was saying is that they shouldn’t have been written with one gender in mind. A good story will have broad appeal. Heck female authors have been giants in the fantasy genre from the early days (Ursula Leguin comes to mind). So the mandate should have been ‘write a good story’ not ‘your target audience is teenage boys’…

@@AshendaFiremyst Sometimes I think we’ve gotten too hung up on male perspective vs female perspective. If we just want to stick to dnd authors some of my favorite books were written by Elaine Cunningham and Erin Evans. Not to mention Margaret Weis with Dragonlance. Good stories and good characters are relatable to anyone.
