The Fall Of Lolth - Forgotten Realms Lore

  • A certain wizard may have re-written the history of the schism that divided the dark followers of Lolth and the followers of light and Corellon Larenthian, that has been told among those who are not elves.
But who do the elves remember the events that brought down Lolth and her banishment from the Seldarine and the trees of Arvandor?
Today's speaker is a priest of Vhaeraun who retells the fall of Lolth in how the Tel'quessir remembers it (perhaps with a few embellishments).

A tale truly well told. Just one thing, Corellon recognized Eilistraee's innocence, but she went anyway because she had seen glimpses of a future in which the drow would need her, so she chose to share the exile to be there for them.

We had a much longer script for this, originally told from an Eillistraee cleric that contained this factoid, but we re-wrote and focused our perspective from Vhaeraun priest, so he would naturally avoid telling that part of the story :)

I've seen a different story. That Eilistraee was proclaimed innocent but willingfully decided into self-exile to try to bring her people back and not be puppets of her mother, as she would bring more suffering upon them. That was an act of pure compassion of hers.

My family of Drow PCs came from Szith Morcane to Skullport because Eilistraee's song lured the would be matriarch of the new clan(consisting of her, Sah'Aro, and her niece Ehlianna) to find a new path and a new way to live. The Promenade of the Dark Maiden is most welcoming to refugees from the Underdark and a good jump off point for any Drow PCs who aren't outright evil. Eilistraee's death and somewhat abrupt return in 1489 DR is absolutely fantastic for character background. Ehlianna was Eilistraee's most devout paladin and when she died Ehlianna went insane. Her grief made her a terror in the Underdark and drew the attention of the Raven Queen, who offered Ehlianna a new way to terrify what lives in the dark: the powers of a Hexblade. Eilistraee's return has made things complicated for Ehlianna. 😂

Well met and well made. Although, I have heard the tale told differently. Albeit rarely for this is the more well known and "canon" of it. There is a version of this old song that is sung from Lolth's point of view. Where she asked and begged and pleaded to Corellon for opportunities to prove herself and rise above her station, but he preferred keeping her as just his lover and weaver. Thus making her thirst for ambition more of a desire to break free of her stifling station. There is YET ANOTHER telling of this tale that also hints that Lolth might have very well loved Gruumsh. Or at least felt genuine lust for him. (A desperate housewife falls for the gruff badboy biker from the other side of town sorta scenario.) The rest of the tale goes on to it's inevitable conclusion, but these two small details always seemed to add just the right amount of.... for lack of a better word, humanity to the Spider Goddess. Making her less of a Saturday Morning Cartoon villain and more of a character players could understand. Without condoning or condemning.
But that's just me and my home brew.

Most of this seems to be directly taken from Evermeet: Island of the elves by Elaine Cunningham. Given she is one of the main original "creators" of FR lore, I would say seems legit. Also, I would never trust Loth. Also, it's Loth not Lolth if your're old school!

1985: Gary Gygax spells Lolth in Unearthed Arcana
1987: Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting establishes Lolth in the Realms
1988: Salvatore spells her Lloth in The Crystal Shard.
1990: Salvatore spells Loth in Exile book.
1992: Ed Greenwood, Salvatore, and Douglas Niles spell it Lloth in Menzoberranzan Box set.
1995: Lloth used in Elaine Cunningham's book Daughter of the Drow.
1998: Evermeet uses the Spelling of Loth in the story of the Seldarine.
1998: Demihuman Deities states that Lloth is a regional spelling of Menzoberranzan.
~2000: Wizards of the Coast largely removes all varianta and uses Lolth.
Personally, the first authors of the stories used Loth or Lloth and I usually go by the story tellers because to me Forgotten Realms is a story...and I'm biased in favor of Salvatore because I got a friend who never even tried to finish a book let alone read one on his own, read the entire series from start to finish (at the time last one). Then again I'm ok with calling her "Goth chick with daddy issues".

Hmmm the way I see it, yes he is jealous of his sister but also…he doesn’t seem to actually want to be without his sister either. Perhaps even predicting she would follow him upon knowing his banishment. It’s possible if you take this story as the truth that this could be how he felt, whether he admitted it or not. They are twins are they not? I’ve known many a complicated twin relationship in my life and this does not seem out of the realm of possibility in terms of a somewhat toxic but still dependent relationship between siblings, especially when one is overshadowed by the other but the overshadowing one is kind at heart and wishes not to be parted from a dear loved one. This is just one idea I have on the subject but one I think suits this story as it’s told in this instance.

Evermeet: Island of Elves. Or Demihuman Deities. Or the Drow of the Underdark. Note that this thge origin story in the Forogtten Realms, which is different from Mordenkainen's version, but is true for Toril. Note too that this version is altered, because it's told by a Vhaeraunite character (for example, it neglects to say that Eilistraee chose exile despite her innocence because she had seen glimpses of a future in which the drow would face hardships and pain, and she wanted to be there for them in the times of need--even though she was scared of what she had seen, and she could have had all she wanted if she had just stayed in Arvandor).
