I haven't read them but Salvatorre wrote my favorite Star Wars novel (Vector Prime) so I've always thought they might be good reads. You just convinced me to find and read it.
What an amazing book.. I had to read boring books like "The Outsiders", The chrysalides", .. sure they are ok.. but BORING!!!!.. I came across R.A. Salvatore and Terry Brooks near the end of High school.. my older brother lent me a few books to read.. and wow.. i couldnt put them down.. im so jealous that your school had books like this in its curriculum..
R..A. Salvatore was great at creating the most interesting characters. Jarlax'l, and Atemis Entreri are two of my all time favorite characters in fantasy lititure.

Menzoberranzan is a great place to go on vacation to. They have a policy of "mandatory friendship" and when go there you'll find yourself doing all sorts of fun arts and crafts and what have you. They have all kinds of things to feast upon too. There is a joke I like to make where I mention all the things there are to feast upon, then people freak out because they are imagining a human talking about feasting upon these things, and then I laugh at them for being the most predictable of all small 2 leggeds and point out they would survive longer if they can learn to be less predictable. I'm too busy for that joke, I have Dwarves to fight along side against Drow.

Menzoberanzan the place were you come and gaze untill a spider eats your face. Then you stop gazing and the spider will eat the rest then but drow get old, their pet spiders too, so they take their time to finish their meal. Thats UTILITARISM (or was it utility-rat-ism - nah no rats were here that i did see, anyway), the best for the drowmanity, Human taste like chicken, drow and spiders, I bet dont taste as well, so its pure logic to let the spider community eat the humans. no matter how their cries sound, the other way round would not be profoundly logical but dont mind the killing frenzy the drow are actualy very friendly. Loved the city, 5/5 would visit any time again, but I didnt actually really got out yet but I think im just kinda stuck in some web or so. No worry, come I will show you the best way. Ah, yes the old city of Menzoberranzan, were you need a drink tester for even tap water, let alone wine, and perhaps you have to double check after triple checking your bed to make sure nothing has been placed in it like a snake, spider and bath tub for leeches or other things of the likes that can kill you, very apt description,
So...the Drow must have an amazing birthrate since they seem to kill each other faster than their enemies manage to kill them. Practically all the original families that founded the city were wiped out. Maybe they have secretly been adoring the rabbit god.
I recommend The War of the Spider Queen series. 6 books and I loved it. Pharaun Mizzrym was one of my favorite characters. I also realize your original comment is from 6 years ago but I hope this still reaches you in hopes of you being able to enjoy this great series.

Very nice video. I've been collecting forgotten realms novels for over 20 years now and I truly hope it never ends. One day I hope to own them all and of course the stories of the dark elves are some of my favorites. All it took was reading the 1st dark elf trilogy to create this realms addict.
I love the way you tell the story of this, most channels are just "informative" - which is good, and serves an important purpose, but I just sometimes want to hear a good yarn spun from the lore.
The goal of the channel is to have videos that serve an in-game function. We avoid most spoilers this way, and allow the speaker to be unreliable. DM's can more easily say "thats only their perspective". I am also in love with the realms because of how it makes me feel when I read the lore. It has a lifeness to it that we try to recreate in our videos.
My first real exposure to D&D was the Menzoberranzan PC game, that I played with every possible class and race I could, to this day I will usually play a Drow if I can in a game.
I have a suggestion! I love your Forgotten Realm History but would it be nice to have another series talking about the characters of FR? Like the ones that are well known like Arunsun, Elminster and such but also the lesser known one that fell on the way side like Gareth Dragonbane, Alias, dragonbait and such :D .
Very much enjoyed. Starting a campaign in the underdark soon and I'm playing a Drow for the first time(played plenty of other elves in other campaigns) so this was perfect to get a great background and paint a better picture in my head.

I never realized how close Mithral Hall was to Menzoberranzan. It's like super close. Like, "Hey matron mother, I'm going to go visit my friend Bruenor!! I'll be home for dinner" close.
True, about 20 miles apart and 3 miles deep. In D&D you can walk about 24 miles in a day, so would need some magic to get there and back in a day. - There is also no roads, so it would be hard terrain, so not an easy treck.

I was on point with Lolth. I was pretty close with Baenre. But I was way off with Menzoberranzan- I tend to roll double r's. I really want to know how pronounce Jarlaxle- as he is my favorite character in The Legend Of Drizzt series. Looking forward to listening to more from your series! And again, thanks.

You're right about the political climate, but I don't think there's an actual "problem" with the lore. The "black" elves are the way they are because of almost never seeing light for centuries. Simple as that. Edit: I think a lot of D&D lore would make for potentially great movies. And something like this should not be like Guardians of the Galaxy IMO...I'm feeling it a lot more of a horror/adventure mix.
Wish they would do movies, I think current technology can depict a battle between Drizzt and Artemis with relative speed accuracy. I would lean toward full CGI though. In my opinion, there's so much potential in this series that no actor could live long enough to physically portrait many of the characters. But voices are easier to match if and when it came time for another movie.

considering how slowly elfkind is suposed to procreate the drow followers of Loth should have gone extinct. One century is in no way enough time to recover themselves.
Those are contermeasures against death of violence. Aside from reincarnation that instate your new body is of a young adult there is no other way to direct restore youth or extend life like the guys in the video. Only wish would work but you would being risking never being able to use it again, potion of youth is more likely to age you after the first time. You may houserule to allow that but these thing are not on the default setting wich is a oversight. There is no reliable way to make something minor like double your lifespan but bring the dead back is something way too easy. Should be the opositive really.
The Drow are the fertile ones. That's why the in plan for conquest of the surface, Vaherun decided the males sould search for elves of other races, to have kin. The curse of Corellion is strong; if a Drow and another elf mix, the cildren are Drows.

I'm a first time DM going on about four months of content. I have a pretty good story but if anyone with more experience could help guide me to making the encounters more exciting I would appreciate it. I think my party is at the point where they won't die. Get a pre-made adventure and scavange encounters and ideas from it. Out of the Abyss has lots of underdark stuff, I love Storm Kings Thunder for the openness, Dragon Heist if its a city thing.
@@ForgottenRealmsHistory I've been writing a lot of my own stories for this adventure. I'm taking a few things from pre-mades I thought were cool. Tomorrow, to embrace the season, I'm going to have the bard and mage (leaving the gnome and half elf pali) be taken by two vampires they encountered in the previous run. I was going to have them turned. Then have to run through an arena hosted by a Lich who takes the losers souls as a form of currency for his growing army. If they make it out of the arena I will have the two in party vampires killed (for dramatic purposes) then raised with a wish spell. This is pretty rough as I'm still trying to work out a lot of the details for this. I'll look at the pre-made things you suggested for encounters and traps. Do you have any forums that i could talk in and get good responses by the community I could join? Btw, I've now watched almost all of your videos and I love them. Awesome job on the voices and artwork to give the history more depth.
This is the shit. I'll never outgrow fantasy or let me imagination die. I love books, especially weird fantasy books like the ones R.A. Salvatore makes. And at this point in my life, I've come to truly realize that movie/show adaptations are very rarely up to par. I mean just look at the Dark Tower movie. It was total garbage. Stephen King is just a sellout in my eyes after that one, though I still love The Dark Tower series and think it is without a doubt his finest work. On one hand I'd be happy for some obscure books to get more recognition that they deserve, but on the other hand movies and shows usually end up being made of the most popular books and thus are usually made as cash cow pinatas, not as true works of art. Which is why in some ways I hope never to see a movie or show adaptation of some of my favourite books anymore (like an Elric or Drizzt movie for example). Because 90% of the time it won't be done with the fanboy passion that it deserves but rather with shiny graphics and dumbed down plot/characters just to appease the masses, for money. And it'll probably be a garbage blockbuster. Thats why I feel what makes these worlds so great is they exist in the imagination which most people seem to lose over time, and they take it for granted and dont even realize theyve lost it. You can envision the world that the author is projecting and in a lot of ways its the most immersive form of art because You can almost fully exist in that world for a while.

When I found this video, I was hoping I'd get some questionmarks answered for me... But they remain unanswered, so maybe someone here can inform me further (spoilers for any Out of the Abyss players): What is the current state of affairs within Menzoberranzan after the demonic incursion by Gromph Baenre summoning Demogorgon within the city and the following struggles? Has there been determined what the "canon" outcome of Out of the Abyss is?
My guess, not much. The Silence of Lolth shows that the city is blessed by the Spider Queen and will resist almost any and all disasters. Quenthel Baenre is still the leader, and Gromph still holds Sorcere under his grasp. Would be hard to overthrow this combo.
@@ForgottenRealmsHistory I find that pretty odd then that Out of the Abyss does state that Gromph goes missing after the incident. Looks like WotC are dropping the ball on the lore here. I hope they at some point can create some clarity on this, one way or another.
This one is a particular problem. Gromph left to get help in out of the Abyss, as well as in the novel Archmage, but as far as I can tell, after the problem is over with, why would he not return? His sister, while angry of what he did, would not sacrifice him. Whomever takes over as Archmage would not be aligned with the Banre house. Not a risk she would take.

most recent books I read featuring menzoberranzan was Salvatore's Homecoming books where Drizzt fights Demogorgon. The is also a campaign featuring it in Neverwinter but that was a bitch to finish.
So what are we going for with the narrator? Renegade Drow-Mage from the Tower of Sorcere? Potentially with ties to Vizeran DeVir, if not Vizeran DeVir himself?
Well, presumably not him then, since he died before the Spellplague. There is the potential of an ally of Jalynfein Oblodra the Spider Mage, though I'd assume such a character would care a little more about Drizzt (unless the offhandedness of the narrator towards Drizzt could be a strategic choice to purposefully undermine his importance, and this narrator's theoretical admiration for him)

Funny I Tought it was Jarlaxle in the way he dismissed Drizz't involvement. Jax always has a wierd softspot for Drizz't and Jax is known to stay in fearun for long period of time.

Menzoberranzan is about the only D&D word that pronounced correctly in this video. City names, races and the names of people all pronounced wrong, sadly.

Love those d&d stories and lore
wow, awesome man!!!!, i just started to read this drizzt series (on the third book lol) and this video helps explain a lot.
Always thought it would be helpful for DMs and Players who were playing D&D, but happy to see it can help people who are into the novels as well :)

Great series one of my favorite. I'm currently re reading for 3rd time and on book 9 which will follow close to this video since the war for Keepers Dale will be starting soon for me
there were a few little flaws, I'm going to watch it again and see if I'm wrong, but in general, very good. I like the "roleplaying"

Faerûn History who am I talking to because you seem to know a lot about the land and the history.. yeah people are jerks that's probably why a movie will never be made of the famous dark elf plus you have to run it by R A Salvatore and probably a few comic books either DC Comics or Marvel might take this on I can see it like a Japanese anime that might be pretty cool CGI would be awesome like the movie Beowulf is another one make the whole thing CGI computer that way all you need is a voice actor and nothing else it would still be cool you can only cross your fingers and Hope that there will be a movie someday the only thing I have is a Campfire story of a bunch of friends killing a dragon but it's not set in the realms I don't want to step on any toes I sent this on another planet entirely because I'm not too sure about the rules of farun and what they would want if I could ask somebody I would I would love to set my characters in the Realm my character Archer is a lot like Drizzt he's half elf half human he's highly skilled him and Drizzt would make a great unbeatable team my character Archer is a rogue so to speak but I think the two would hit it off
You're right about the political climate, but I don't think there's an actual "problem" with the lore. The "black" elves are the way they are because of almost never seeing light for centuries. Simple as that.
Edit: I think a lot of D&D lore would make for potentially great movies. And something like this should not be like Guardians of the Galaxy IMO...I'm feeling it a lot more of a horror/adventure mix.
Wish they would do movies, I think current technology can depict a battle between Drizzt and Artemis with relative speed accuracy. I would lean toward full CGI though. In my opinion, there's so much potential in this series that no actor could live long enough to physically portrait many of the characters. But voices are easier to match if and when it came time for another movie.
Thought a movie would be cool, but the more I watch movies being made now, I really hope they NEVER ruin this storyline with a movie!@!

👿🔱😈.. Drows and this boxset are the best things to ever happen to D&D... My dd pals and i read Salvotors dark elf trilogy and were writting up pcs fast.. It was so cool when we got more drow info from the boxset.. Man i have a old trapper full of drows i wrote up back in the day 🤘
You left out some stuff. Like the Clawrift being filled with houses and the fall of the most powerful house after the loss in Keepers Dale.
considering how slowly elfkind is suposed to procreate the drow followers of Loth should have gone extinct. One century is in no way enough time to recover themselves.
Those are contermeasures against death of violence. Aside from reincarnation that instate your new body is of a young adult there is no other way to direct restore youth or extend life like the guys in the video. Only wish would work but you would being risking never being able to use it again, potion of youth is more likely to age you after the first time. You may houserule to allow that but these thing are not on the default setting wich is a oversight. There is no reliable way to make something minor like double your lifespan but bring the dead back is something way too easy. Should be the opositive really.
The Drow are the fertile ones.
That's why the in plan for conquest of the surface, Vaherun decided the males sould search for elves of other races, to have kin.
The curse of Corellion is strong; if a Drow and another elf mix, the cildren are Drows.

I'm a first time DM going on about four months of content. I have a pretty good story but if anyone with more experience could help guide me to making the encounters more exciting I would appreciate it. I think my party is at the point where they won't die. Get a pre-made adventure and scavange encounters and ideas from it. Out of the Abyss has lots of underdark stuff, I love Storm Kings Thunder for the openness, Dragon Heist if its a city thing.
@@ForgottenRealmsHistory I've been writing a lot of my own stories for this adventure. I'm taking a few things from pre-mades I thought were cool. Tomorrow, to embrace the season, I'm going to have the bard and mage (leaving the gnome and half elf pali) be taken by two vampires they encountered in the previous run. I was going to have them turned. Then have to run through an arena hosted by a Lich who takes the losers souls as a form of currency for his growing army. If they make it out of the arena I will have the two in party vampires killed (for dramatic purposes) then raised with a wish spell. This is pretty rough as I'm still trying to work out a lot of the details for this.
I'll look at the pre-made things you suggested for encounters and traps. Do you have any forums that i could talk in and get good responses by the community I could join?
Btw, I've now watched almost all of your videos and I love them. Awesome job on the voices and artwork to give the history more depth.

I really miss this channel, i wish it hadn't died two years ago. Were the drow ever revisited?
This is the shit. I'll never outgrow fantasy or let me imagination die. I love books, especially weird fantasy books like the ones R.A. Salvatore makes.
And at this point in my life, I've come to truly realize that movie/show adaptations are very rarely up to par. I mean just look at the Dark Tower movie. It was total garbage. Stephen King is just a sellout in my eyes after that one, though I still love The Dark Tower series and think it is without a doubt his finest work.
On one hand I'd be happy for some obscure books to get more recognition that they deserve, but on the other hand movies and shows usually end up being made of the most popular books and thus are usually made as cash cow pinatas, not as true works of art.
Which is why in some ways I hope never to see a movie or show adaptation of some of my favourite books anymore (like an Elric or Drizzt movie for example). Because 90% of the time it won't be done with the fanboy passion that it deserves but rather with shiny graphics and dumbed down plot/characters just to appease the masses, for money. And it'll probably be a garbage blockbuster.
Thats why I feel what makes these worlds so great is they exist in the imagination which most people seem to lose over time, and they take it for granted and dont even realize theyve lost it.
You can envision the world that the author is projecting and in a lot of ways its the most immersive form of art because You can almost fully exist in that world for a while.

Menzoberanzan the place were you come and gaze untill a spider eats your face. Then you stop gazing and the spider will eat the rest then but drow get old, their pet spiders too, so they take their time to finish their meal. Thats UTILITARISM (or was it utility-rat-ism - nah no rats were here that i did see, anyway), the best for the drowmanity, Human taste like chicken, drow and spiders, I bet dont taste as well, so its pure logic to let the spider community eat the humans. no matter how their cries sound, the other way round would not be profoundly logical but dont mind the killing frenzy the drow are actualy very friendly. Loved the city, 5/5 would visit any time again, but I didnt actually really got out yet but I think im just kinda stuck in some web or so. No worry, come I will show you the best way. Great things for gems (any) I mean greedings from germany. I always wanted to try chicken... I just cant eat those human every fcn single day... imagine you eat the tender favorite food but EVERY DAY... I just wanna try something at least a bit different. A chicken I never tried for example. Anyways i ran almost out of neighbors

When I found this video, I was hoping I'd get some questionmarks answered for me... But they remain unanswered, so maybe someone here can inform me further (spoilers for any Out of the Abyss players):
What is the current state of affairs within Menzoberranzan after the demonic incursion by Gromph Baenre summoning Demogorgon within the city and the following struggles? Has there been determined what the "canon" outcome of Out of the Abyss is?
My guess, not much. The Silence of Lolth shows that the city is blessed by the Spider Queen and will resist almost any and all disasters. Quenthel Baenre is still the leader, and Gromph still holds Sorcere under his grasp. Would be hard to overthrow this combo.
@@ForgottenRealmsHistory I find that pretty odd then that Out of the Abyss does state that Gromph goes missing after the incident. Looks like WotC are dropping the ball on the lore here. I hope they at some point can create some clarity on this, one way or another.
This one is a particular problem. Gromph left to get help in out of the Abyss, as well as in the novel Archmage, but as far as I can tell, after the problem is over with, why would he not return? His sister, while angry of what he did, would not sacrifice him. Whomever takes over as Archmage would not be aligned with the Banre house. Not a risk she would take.

No worries. Why the D&D dose not have a lore break down I will never know. They just push live and pc play. But where they fail you will fill that gap. I really hope you blow up on RUclips we need more lore videos.

most recent books I read featuring menzoberranzan was Salvatore's Homecoming books where Drizzt fights Demogorgon. The is also a campaign featuring it in Neverwinter but that was a bitch to finish.

though I'd assume such a character would care a little more about Drizzt
(unless the offhandedness of the narrator towards Drizzt could be a strategic choice
to purposefully undermine his importance, and this narrator's theoretical admiration for him)
