Unlike the Drow (the drow were asking for it) the Duergar did not intend to become Duergar. They were first captured, tortured and broken by the mindflayers and abonded by their clans and their gods. They did not ask for or deserve their fate
Legend says that when you kill a Duergar their last move is to give you a look of gratitude for ending their suffering. And then Morrodin reforges them into a non corrupted Dwarf.
But, not being selected to sit on the throne of the empire after the Spider War stuck in their craw. Pride gave birth to bitterness. Bitterness drove obsession. Obsession drove them into the mindflayers.
Duergar are my favorite subrace of "Dwarf" to play. I seem to often be attracted to playing races that have been mistreated in some shape or form. It certainly adds a lot of flavor to their backstory.
In the most mechanical terms, they are not the same kind of evil as Drow. Duergar are generally Lawful Neutral or Lawful Evil...though individuals may differ as with any race. I tend to play them out as the Spartans of the Dwarven races.
Faerûn History please make more videos like that and see if you can make them longer like 15-30 minutes worth of material the quality of your videos are great so take as much time with it maybe next video have it on the Dragon born and their somewhat new history or Eladrin 👍🏼👍🏼💯
I recently started playing *Baldurs Gate 3* since its full release just happened. Over *815,000* unique players on *Steam* is insane!!! This game broke records. Never have we seen a *CRPG* like *Baldurs Gate* have this many players and downloads. *Larian Studios* and their tireless workers deserve every penny they get from this many sales. I am glad I found your channel since I am doing a Deep Dive (no pun intended 😂) on all of the different type of races and subraces in the world of *Baldurs Gate* and *DnD* ... I've only ever played *DnD* once for like 30 mins with some homies but I've seen a couple videos of *DnD* runs on RUclips and its extremely intriguing.... *Baldurs Gate 3* has my full attention right now even though my favourite game of all time *Escape From Tarkov* just wiped and usually I put all my time into *Escape From Tarkov* but with *Baldurs Gate* releasing its hard not to play it. Thanks for these amazing lore videos! Looking forward to watching many more of them.
In one of my fictional worlds, the Duergar are pretty much exactly the same as the Dwarves up above. They still worship the Allforge; only difference being their staunchly militarized society. Because they are in the Blighted Lands (basically a cursed scary plane of existence that can be accessed through some magical deserts), they have to be on the watch all the time for demons to attack them. Their society *isn't* evil; it's just ruthless and condemning of heresy.
Faerûn History glad to hear it. I love your channel. It's my favorite FR channel. Curious, if I were to make you into a Nov in my game, what race/class would you like?
This video conflicts with the wiki article it is attached to in a few areas, primarily with Laduguer and Deep Duerra. Is a little confusing on the timeline and ascension of them both, in the video Laduguer is a Duergar who led his people to the surface to be betrayed then return to the Underdark, whereas the wiki states he was a god already being followed by the Clan. Duerra, per the wiki, ascended as reward for defeating a Drow and mind flayer alliance after being Queen of Dunspeirrin, not after success in war against shield dwarves of the surface. Is there concensus on which is the accepted lore?
Is it still true in the forgotten realms, that the Duergar still believe that they were created by Laduguer, and all the other Dwarfs (Hill, Mountain, & other) are nothing more than disgusting, unimaginative, & poor copy's of the Duergar? Basically, believing that other dwarfs aren't even the same race or species.
Thanks for the info, but when I mentioned them not being the same race I was referring to the Duergar perspective due to religious belief. It seems that in the forgotten realms the hatred between the Duergar & Dwarfs is more over an incident rather than Religious belief that's in D&D lore (I was wondering if that carried over). So, thank you for clearing up that misunderstanding.
What do y'all think a duergar sounds like? What's a duergar accent? They were separated from other dwarves for over 4000 years, so it's a given that they don't talk like other dwarves.
*cracks nuckles* So, you wanna know about Dwarven Linguistics? You came to the right place. All the Dwarven Languages (Dethek) today all decent from the “Elder Tongue” or Old Dethek. Most dwarves today would only recognize a few words, and only the scholars would know how understand it completely. That is unless you come from the Great Rift and you are a Gold Dwarf. The Gold Dwarves are known for having a dialect that is hard to understand in the North, and this is because they have not updated their language since the days of the first Great Dwarven Kingdom, Bhaerynden. Most other dwarves (Shield Dwarves) speak a dialect that comes from Shanatar. The Most Northern of these dwarves have slowly evolved into picking up words and grammar from Damaran human tongue as well, and this is where Duergar language split. Duergar also speak Shanatar Dethek, but their influences comes from Undercommon and illithid words (from Deep Speech) mixed in. A duergar would be able to speak better with a Shield Dwarf from the Western Heartlands or Vaasa than from mithral hall, but would still be understood by either. A Gold Dwarf would have far more problems understanding Duergar than a Shield Dwarf and vica versa. So how would it sound like: It would be dwarven, but quieter spoken - It would have Lovecraftian words mixed in with hard Germanic words and they would have analogies that cover underdark topics instead of dwarven topics.
Expect a invitation once my art ensemble is in full throttle. There will be a band of 6 of us yet 18 in total venturing forth through the multiverse. The Golden Mirage awaits...........
The Aril-tel-quessir were almost wiped out by the Dragons before the First Flowering, so they really never made much of an impact. The only place left for the Avariel is their hidden keep in the remote peaks in the Icerim Mountains in distant Sossal.
The Gray Dwarf's got a raw deal. Fucking Mind Flayers, an there gods pissed off on them. Not cool. The Dwarves really need to pull there heads out there asses.
When it comes down to dwarven steel, there is not comparisons, none I cal tell you, sure the elves have their enchanted forges and the fire giants have their great magmatic furnaces, but dwarven steel my friends forged by the hands of a master runesmiths on their elemental, primal forges and anvils, is nothing short of miracles made flesh, or in this case metal, Dwarves do not use magic, they have no use for it, but they can channel the raw primal power of the elements and arcane into the metals weaving them during the forging and hammering them in place on their anvils, all done by master runesmith, but the metal at its core is were things get interesting, while not all dwarven metal works have a natural magical infused alloyed, the metals used in their weapons and armor are the result of an amalgamation of volcanic mineral being fused together, this is the reason why dwarven-steel never seem to rust, nor lose its edge, but things get even better when actual enchanted alloyed is used along with their runes, I have seen runic axes cut down a giant, a shield taking a spell blast from soccer or armor that can withstand illusions and temptations of demons, But Duergar crafted arms and armor,....better you stay clear of them as you would a drow's torture chamber, yes they bare the same quality as their noble kin, but the price of using one of them is not worth it I tell you this,
Unlike the Drow (the drow were asking for it) the Duergar did not intend to become Duergar. They were first captured, tortured and broken by the mindflayers and abonded by their clans and their gods. They did not ask for or deserve their fate
True!
Love these videos, so we’ll done

The drow most certainly did not ask for it. They were driven from their homes into the ground like insects. You have much to learn about drow history.

But youve got to love the Azer too lol. I Agree, duergar are great 👍🏻
I wish that the Azer were a playable race.@@brianmorris364
They're despicable. Ex-slaves who won their freedom in order to... enslave. Filth.

"Dwergar" is actually the old Norse name for dwarven races in Norse mythology
Pretty much everything in dnd is stolen from something far better.
The fact you pronounce Duergar properly makes me happy.
they dug deep and greedily.
That was one of your best videos 👍🏼👍🏼💯😎
Yeah, especially liked this one too.

Great, hope to see more of this in the future!

Great to hear! Still take it as an encouragement, many of us love the content and the quality. :)
liked that you ended on a note of peace, much needed in today's world

That's great, I love Nethril stuff. And makes since since there aren't too many left after the second sundering
They are a misunderstood race I must admit
Amazing! I DM OotA and my party just got to Gracklstugh so the timing is perfect!
They are often cannon fodders in the Legend of Drizzt's books. I hope they take a deep representation of that race.
Great video guys
Very well done, and the music and vocals make this video really satisfying. Thanks!
Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis...
An Age undreamed of
Shot in the dark: Lovecraft.
Nifty opening man!
Faerûn History Thank you for the work you put to your videos! You've evolved a lot!
Please consider doing a video on the Clergy of Kelemvor. :)
Its on our list :)
I think we all would love to see a video about Sun elves and moon house and the difference between them
Faerûn History oh well okay still a big fan of love watching videos don't push yourself too hard
And why the star elves all picked up and left at once, maybe, too!
great narrator
Forgot to mention how badly the duergar whipped the drow :D

I like your story telling style.
Duergar inhabit the Simonside Hills (Sigmund's seat) in Northumberland, they lure travellers into the swamps at night.

I wish I could play as a Duergar. Guess that's what Homebrew's for.

Gonna roll a Duergar, thanks for the video!
these are really well made videos. why anyone would give it a "thumbs down" is very strange.
My DM sent me here, I think this might be a hint my Dwarven Cleric of Klangaden "might" be in trouble.
:)
Silverbeard be praised - maybe you will be told to mend old wounds with the Duergar.
CLANGGEDIN!
Bearqueer
Bear-e-queer ... loser!
Duergarin' !
Do you run a game by chance?
Awesome
Why are some of those dwarves really big in comparison?
steroids
Why is there nothing on the Avariel Elf in forgotten realms lore
The Aril-tel-quessir were almost wiped out by the Dragons before the First Flowering, so they really never made much of an impact. The only place left for the Avariel is their hidden keep in the remote peaks in the Icerim Mountains in distant Sossal.

Clan "Bear A Queer" 😂😂😂😂😂😂
My brothers are grey dwarfs in d and d
TL:DR - They delved too greedily and too deep.
Duergar > Drow
There's a 2nd edition FR book called "Tour of the Realms" or something that will tell you how to pronounce all those words correctly....
faerunhistory.wordpress.com/2018/08/03/pronounciation-in-the-realms/
What did he mess up on because I thought his pronunciation was impeccable
