One of my aspirations for this project is to create an essential guide to Waterdeep, covering each ward in extreme detail. Which ward would you like to see me do next?
Please consider supporting my work by becoming a Protector of the Realms. This community is what allows me to continue working on the Realms every day and allows me to continue creating new stories for you and your games: patreon.com/EdGreenwood

Blackstaff Tower (or maybe Trades Ward). Overall, I think we all would love a nice Waterdeep guide, not only the wards, but different famous (and maybe some not so well known) locations, sights, people and customs, too.

      @Handshot 8 месяцев назад +6

@yesmilord2350 Yeah I know, I have that adventure 😌 but it focus on the "here and now" (Volo write it for the adventures in the 1492 DR) and most of the history is not explained. One example is - and I really want a video about it - the origin of the Walking Statues of Waterdeep: we really know very little about them, and it's fascinating when you are the player, cause it add mystery. But as a GM, I'm very curious about the truth about them. I can always improvise, but I would also know how the writer of the Sword Coast imagined it

I don't know if you'll read this Ed but I hope it finds your attention. You sir, are an icon of modern fantasy. In my eyes rivaled by few, and easily on par with Tolkien and other classic world builders. Your great work has inspired much of my life, even before I was introduced properly to dungeon and dragons. There are very few IP's that have captured my attention enough to want to learn the histories and mysteries of it's lore, and fewer still that I know as much about. I thank you for your passion in creating, and dedication to sharing, this beautiful universe. You have enriched my life and made my world a more beautiful place to live. Your legacy is grand and well deserved sir. May it outlive us all.

This is the kind of write up that I used when I posted this video on a Neverwinter Nights Extended Edition server:
"Watching this video, alongside others, I find myself conflicted in how I should feel about Ed Greendwood in general. As stated previously, I'm of the opinion that any place is just the way you need it to be - as a DM - to serve your setting and story. Yet, especially when it comes to persistent worlds a common denominator is important to keep the setting consistent.
I really like how in his videos Greenwood combines broad themes of the the areas he describes with very specific and narrow plot points that players might come across as long as the DM is capable and mindful to drop the right hints.
Maybe it's my own bias, my disregard for overarching story arcs in general, that makes me ignore part of Greenwoods thought process here, because I rather have my own, more dynamic process happening instead. Yet I can't argue against the intricate ideas that he brings up in these videos (referring to the books he wrote or at least took part in) that flesh out the setting in various ways."
The server is in closed beta phase currently but aims to offer a persistent world with a focus on Waterdeep and Skullport in Neverwinter Nights Extended Edition. Hope I'll be able to post anything more official about it at some point!

I have a feeling that Dorlen Spikeshield was actually one of the Silent Nine with a humanoid alter ego form of Barok Clanghammer, and that the gemstones found in his sculptures were actually his distributed Dragon's horde.
Maybe his disappearance coincides with Dagult Neverember's employ of Aurinax to guard the embezzled gold horde in the Vault of Dragons, do he was hoping to keep his personal horde safe by distributing it throughout Waterdeep, hidden in his stone sculptures.
One thing that wouldn't quite fit would be why he would need the Dragonstaff of Ahghairon if he already had a draconic ward pass token, but maybe the staff is more powerful than the tokens.

I kinda had a backstory of my Half Drow Bard (a child of a Human Noble and Eilistraee Priestess, former being more of a “new money” and latter who also operate Halfway House for Drow escapees to adjust to non-Lolth life) who came from there before getting into Waterdeep Dragonheist Shenanigans. I kinda had fun with her since she is basically mascot/negotiator/“part time legal attorney” on the group along with getting monetary support from her Drow mom for the Tavern…also maybe serving Prairie Oyster to customers with hangover.

My current campaign is in the Feywild and the players eager to return to Waterdeep to check in on the businesses they have in Dock Ward. Things must be right for when Mirt inevitably arrives for a stout and Volo attempts to sell books and increase his tab. Such stories in the Ultimate Guide to Waterdeep are swapped but the sailor patrons tell none more than the deep water legends of mermaids, ghosts, and even a treasure horde of the Bitch Queen herself!
Maybe one day Elminster will set the story straight in our very tavern by the docks.

Thank you for the details. 1st and 2nd story field stone, upper floors Tudor style. I'm surprised that the fill is still "wattle and daub", aka clay, lime, and dung. But hey, its easy and super cheap. Roof cisterns, internal W/C or "jakes". Servants sleep in the kitchen and maybe one at the entryway (the traditional porter, an elderly servant, usually a retirement position, often deaf if the owner is not the social sort). Two sets of shutters, one exterior and one interior? Now that's a detail that rogues are going to have to deal with. How most North Warders are not very close socially-wise with the immediate neighbors. That sort of detail helps paint the scene in my head, and by narration, into my player's heads.

In my homebrew town/small city of Othrond -o Goldarn Glenn- with population of 80,000 that created for Adnd2e. For players that just want to have humble beginnings together before becoming adventurers. I had a great wrym gold dragon (for the life of me I can’t remember its name anymore) that founded the place after witnessing a human stage play drama. While in human form it was captivated by actors skills. a”After learning everything that dragon could from the actors. The dragon with its almost unlimited sized horde decided to build the ultimate stage for it to play multiple roles over time and switch the characters out every 50 to 60 years. For the naming of the town I tried to an elvish anagram of gold dragon. How did I do? I was 10 at the time so I never checked on the correctness lol

As I understand, Waterdeep is one of the biggest city in the whole world setting. Yet for us players here in the real world, It's not that big. However, the realms is such a war torn and destabilized place. The only big cities that can exist is condensed inside protected city walls. Mr. Greenwood, is it fair to say besides the unprotected tent city slums outside of Waterdeep's walls, there isn't much in the way of buildings outside of the walled section of Waterdeep (other than farms)?

Master Greenwood, I know that the subject I'm about to ask you has nothing to do with your video here, but I couldn't find any references to my doubt. Were there any wizards among the ranks of the Hellriders? Or better yet, was there any magic school or stronghold of magic in the kingdom of Elturgard or even in the sacred city of Elturel?
I have a player who will be playing as a wizard, and he mentions in his backstory that he was trained by wizards from the High Sorcery of Elturel, so I'm looking for any reference from you to enrich this story. Would the master of masters have any solution for me in this case?
I appreciate your help in advance.

Forgettable Realms: The least interesting setting, imaginable.
I play BECMI, out of The Rules Cyclopedia. Many reasons why.
I don't ask for "Character Concepts" Start with every Player (depending on group size average of 5) who wants to play a Character... To start from the same; Thorpe, Hamlet, Manor, or Village. Provide a description of 3 other families, (as well as their own), whom theirs knows, an ally, a neutral or competing family, and one in opposition to the Character's self-interest. That's 30 households of families, 90 to 120 individuals altogether. With established inter- relationships, share that before session zero, so the Players can draw their own conclusions as to what that would mean. Then make Characters together, they've known each other as Characters all their lives Make your own world, start locally, a few Knights on Mamorial estates, dividing up among them the following settlements. A lot of Homesteasds, a scattering of half a dozen Thorpes, a few Hamlets, a central village alongside each Manor, and a distant, unappealing City, with a Baron.
