    Although one can hear that Chloe's technique at this stage is still developing, her performance of the Bach is sublime.
    The Adagio ma non tanto is so beautifully nuanced and moving, and the Allegro is so vigorous.
    Such musicality is truly amazing.
    (The piano accompaniment is wonderful too.)

    I love how she progressively develops the colors in the longer notes. That is something I don't often hear. A lot of violinists have great technical skills that can impress but they just aren't that enjoyable to listen to. I can listen to Chloe all day long.

    The little facial expressions she makes are so precious, especially in that slow opening movement. She loves that sound. And whoever thinks that Bach is somehow so mathematical that he can’t be emotional should listen to these violin-keyboard sonatas.

    She has very good teachers indeed. You can make screenshot from every frame of the video and all is pure beauty and top level violin playing skills. And she choses very interesting and very difficult music. She plays so sensitive way like she is connected somewhere to the parallel universe. Probably she is. She knows what Bach, Wieniawski and Svendsen wanted to say us and she server the authors and the music only. She is generous and not selfish at all. The competition is maybe important, but the music is much more important. Respect.

    Social medias have opened the door to the immense talent that can be found in young prodigies. But every so few often come a young beautiful human that can that can pluck the most deep chord of any music lover. Chloe is that rare beauty and it is not surprising she won joint first prize with Christian Li. She reminds me of Sarah Chang at same age and that is a huge compliment. I would be a blessed human if I only had one tenth of her talent. God bless her life.
    I find it hard to comprehend how someone so young can possess so much talent.

    Previously I thought you needed to reach a certain age and level of life experiences to play with so much emotion and expression. Listening to Chloe Chua, I have revised those notions, although I still can't fathom the origin of those powers in an 11-year-old child. She is divine.

    • @jackburgess8579
      @jackburgess8579 4 месяца назад +2

      You make a good point and raise a good question.
      The answer, I think, goes something like this.
      The (very profound) emotions that Chloe expresses are literally in the music as written.
      Supreme musicality - that gift with which she and other musical geniuses are blessed - is just an ability to properly understand music, and so to hear the emotion and other such meanings within it.
      Thus viewed, Chloe's magnificent performances are akin to the teenage mastery with which e.g. Carlsen understands a position in chess or Ramanujan a connect between different branches of mathematics.
      In each case, the "meanings" are just there, and the genius of a prodigy is a precocious ability to detect them.

  • @christianguignard9980

    Magnificent soul, flamboyant violin. There is much more dignity and sensitivity in the violin of Chloe Chua than into the most part of professional adults playing ! It is not a fortuity if she won, along with Christian Li, the first prize of the Menuhin contest ! Authenticity belongs to precocious children, and no more to adults in our sad occidental societies ! Then i remarked that the best prodigies are coming from far Asia or from wide Russia, and no more from Europe ! Also Christian Li, though he was born in Melbourne is obviously an Asian boy !
    What else, absolute grace everywhere ... little crumbs sometimes, but as any adult do, and beyond the crowd of so called masters of our current time, she is Authentic, truly beautiful !!! You know what ? The pure inner being prevails over the work ! The soul before the art !

      Yes! More generally, while I love the way Chloe communicates with the other instrumentalists when she is accompanied, her performances of solo works, which seem more introspective, are profoundly moving.
      If you haven't seen it, her solo performance of (most of) Wieniawski's Variations on an Original Theme a few months after this has a similarly measured tempo and is I think even better.
      ruclips.net/video/KFLYNubrCho/видео.html
      Her solo performance of Telemann's Fantasia #10 in the first round of the 2017 Zhuhai competition is also wonderful. ruclips.net/video/zJF_PmVOucY/видео.html
      In her recent "20 questions" interview at the Singapore Symphony Orchestra channel she said that the hardest piece she had ever tried to learn was a Bach sonata for solo violin. I hope she gets to perform the work soon. Judging by her performances of Telemann and Wieniawski, her solo Bach would be especially remarkable.

      It is the1884 Vincenzo Postiglione (small full size) that she had been loaned a couple of months earlier.
      (She continued to perform with it for the next 30 months, whereupon she switched to the Guarneri (Peter of Venice, 1729) that she used for the first time in her miraculous performance of Mozart's violin concerto #2 with the SSO in October 2020.)

    • @jewelryboxballerina

      @jack burgess2 Thanks for the info. 🙂 It may be the smaller size contributing to the sound, idk. I can hear the difference in the fullness of the sound coming from the Guarneri she's performing on now in comparison to the fiddle she has here. I don't like the sound of it. Just my opinion.

    • @jackburgess8579
      @jackburgess8579 Год назад +3

      @@jewelryboxballerina
      There is no doubt that the Guarneri was a big upgrade and that Chloe extracted from it a tone that is much richer. (The valuation of the Guarneri is about 10x more!)
      That said, I think the tonal quality here is limited in part by the audio (which I think is mono) and in part by the very limited vibrato with which Chloe approaches the Bach (which I suspect you are focusing upon). I think too that in the Bach Chloe was a bit nervous. Even in the next piece, the Wieniawski, the tone is less thin.
      In other performances with this violin -- beginning with the Menuhin performances a few days after this one, especially the final - the tone is much warmer, and in some instances very beautiful. By the time of the Mendelssohn concerto at the Atlanta Festival 18 months later it is gorgeous (if still not at the level of the Guarneri).

    • @jackburgess8579
      @jackburgess8579 2 года назад +10

      The improvisation was on a theme that the Competition organisers had set out as sheet music on the stand.
      To perform it, Chloe moved the stand to centre stage, close to the microphone.
      After playing the theme, Chloe improvised upon it.
      Afterwards, having removed the sheet music Chloe returned the stand to its original position out of courtesy to the next competitor.
      (Although a different theme would be put on the stand for the next competitor to play and then improvise upon, unless he or she were to _begin_ the recital with the improvisation - which I think none of them chose to - the stand would be in the way and would have to be moved off centre-stage before he or she could begin.)

    Was the last piece with score competing on sight reading?

      I was puzzled too and checked the competition rules to find out. It doesn't have to do with sight reading. Rather, the sheet music provides a theme over "a few bars" on which the candidate has to improvise!

      That was during an improvised section, so maybe that cannot be considered a mistake, just an improvisation you don’t like! 😀
