It's logical, because Halberstram also works at P&P and does the same exact thing Van Patten does. He also has a pension for Valentino's suits, and Oliver Peoples glasses. They even have the same barber, although Van Patten has a slightly better haircut.
Y'all are correct. In the book everyone looks practically identical and the character confuse each other all the time. It's very frequently mentioned that someone gets confused with someone else or that the characters are guessing who is standing at the bar etc. and Patrick oftentimes just goes with being mistaken for someone else.
This is a question more about the book, but there's a rumor that the outfits described in the book, if actually put together, would clash wildly or otherwise be extremely loud and that this was a private joke by the author. Would love if a fashion channel investigated this, although it'd be very hard
I actually rewatched this film a couple times to look at the small details in their outfits, and I can confirm that Bryce and Patrick wear the same watch. I zoomed in on the scene where they were doing coke in the bathroom and saw Bryce wearing the same two-tone Rolex (or Seiko in the movie's case) Patrick was wearing with the crown on the 4 o'clock.
I'm a follower of the Southern Italian school of tailoring (about freedom and showing your individuality) so I'm actually am glad that's not in style anymore, personally. They didn't make people look big because we all knew they weren't underneath the clothes. It was fake big like wearing fake muscles. But that's just my personal opinion
There definitely needs to be a breakdown of the style of Dickie Greenleaf from The Talented Mr. Ripley. Pure 50's Italian rivera joy. Definitely a film and clothing worn that you would appreciate greatly and something that you could easily adapt into your own personal wardrobe in style from the lightweight knits, the bolder stripes and other patterns as well as the overall vibe and carefree attitude of Dickie Greenleaf.
I disagree, I don't think anyone can dress like Jude Law in that film and pull off his look. Jude at the time was bordering on angelic good looks, his physique is the perfect balance of slim yet well built with perfect posture. Most people that try to borrow queues from him in that film will just look cartoonish, he pulled it off because of just how perfect he looked and his entire attitude.
A very interesting fact about outfits and brands in general in this movie is that because of financial reasons they could'nt afford to cite a LOT of brands that are in the source material (the book) in which brands that are mentionned are very thought out to fit a specific situation or the character of Bateman, and also there are a lot of them. Because the movie during production was already in a difficult situation in terms of budget (multiples obstacles during production, and also Lionsgate at the time was not that big of a production company) they could only do so much in that regard. Considering that they still did a pretty damn good job conveying narratives or character traits from outfits.
The amount of attention that Bateman pays to brands and status symbols, both in the book and in the film, to me is a perfect encapsulation of his inner psychopathy. He isn't focusing on all this because he's passionate about style or because it brings him joy, he isn't finding a personal 'look' (he wears exactly the same sleek, expensive trash that all his equally vapid colleagues wear), or having fun with it, or experimenting: he sees it simply as a way to better disguise himself as an attractive, powerful person instead of the cruel, hateful, morally repugnant... thing, he actually is. To him, it's merely another way to use status and aesthetics to conform to a convincing simulacra of a respectable, prestigious human being, despite the fact that, on the inside: he really is just a repellant, utterly souless, inhuman monster.
İ think thats also pretty clear in the movie too when he tells his girlfriend that he just wants to fit in. and through the narrative alone too, how everything is described through branding and detail and is in constant comparison to what he does or doesn't have (through others). also, the trait alone, people who are this obsessed with branding, solely only care for others opinions rather than their own. otherwise they wouldn't have spent so much on whatever the thing is when there's probably a just as equal, in quality, for much less; like the way a 60 dollar t shirt and a 500 dollar one has no difference in quality (just branding), but indeed there's a quality difference in a 20 dollar t shirt to a 60 one.
Yes, he wants to fit in, but you forget that for him, as a psychopath, there is a problem in filling the inner void. Psychopaths are good at mimicking others, and apparently, for Bateman, this is all a way to acquire new abilities of this mimicry and be able to understand the smallest details. What, in my opinion, concerns Bateman is the lack of inner emptiness in others and indifference to him. He does not care about the indifference of his other comrades, who are also just empty shells. The only reason he didn't kill Luis is because it's hard for a psychopath to kill those who are proof that there are people in the world who can love them.

3:44 Probably one of the biggest disinformation's in horological history: Patrick Bateman (played by actor Cristian Bale) never wore a Rolex Datejust in the classic 2000 movie American Psycho, because Rolex didn’t want to be associated with an evil movie character. The watch in the movie is a discontinued 38mm two-tone stainless steel Seiko with a fluted bezel reference SNXJ90, featuring a white colored dial with day and date display feature, on a jubilee bracelet. Its resemblance to the Datejust is of course unquestionable, but still - it is a Seiko.

However in the novel, he DOES wear a Datejust 36. Edit: You've addressed this very point lower in the comments.
I thought the intention with the clothing, cards even actions of the characters was to have little things to make you feel that there is something a little off about them.
The square pattern shirt, aka tablecloth shirt is the go to look for Australian Army officers when dress codes call for "smart casual". I've paddled against the flow of that swamp many times.
Tbh I took Bateman wearing the same type of suit Paul Allen wore as him trying to copy him and steal his life and influence, the same way he steals his apartment and wants the escorts to call him "Paul Allen" after he kills him
Love this video! I'm 99% sure that Bryce's watch is a Seiko or Citizen. (SNXJ90 or similar model.) If you look at the date window at 3 o'clock, it's width suggests a day-date that was pretty typical of Seiko.
would love to hear a breakdown on the descriptions of everyone's clothings in the novel. They characters are supposed to think they look good but their attires are, according to Bret Easton Ellis, almost clown looking due to being mismatched.
Great video. On the tie of Allen and Bateman, I'd say they are at least trying to make it look like your classic NY Bankers patterned tie - Hermes or Ferragamo - both known for flat colours and small repetitive patterns. The flat grey suit colour, also known as bankers grey
While it's super interesting listening to someone well versed in a subject talk about stuff... I cannot actually imagine judging anyone by the suit they wear. It's completely alien to me.
We all analyze people, usually subconsciously, but it's unavoidable to humans, but I don't judge as to mean condemn; that's the major difference. Plus, this is purely because it's a movie and the costume design is 100% intentional, so in reality it's judging the work of the costume designer...

excellent analysis. May I please ask, that outfit at 12:56, where is it from, a gorgeous jacket. A suggestion for a video: where and how to buy suiting (and lining and interlining) for a bespoke or MTM suit in Europe? For most people their local tailor will have a rather limited range of fabrics to choose from so we have to go online, where there's a lot to choose from and samples are available but it's kinda hard to say from a fabric how a suit will feel and drape. Differences in weight, thickness, weave etc., what manufacturers would you recommend apart from the outrageously expensive Zegna? Cupro Bemberg seems easy enough to choose but what about the horsehair, what details to pay attention to? Should undercollar be melton or melton+linen? An episode on linen would also be timely, what kind of linen to choose, what weight, too heavy and it doesn't feel right, too light and it crumples, does it have to be Irish linen, which colors (I've seen a gorgeous black linen suit on a Japanese guy, I know about black suits but it looked great on him, with black suede Chelsea boots)...

i scrolled the comments to make sure someone said this! well done sir.
I like that you thought about the alliteration and sibilance in "Film Fashion Critique" and "Cinema Style Critque", respectively.
I believe Bryce is wearing a Seiko SGF204, which was a highly popular model in the 90’s.
Thank you! Good eye, man
Tbh I took Bateman wearing the same type of suit Paul Allen wore as him trying to copy him and steal his life and influence, the same way he steals his apartment and wants the escorts to call him "Paul Allen" after he kills him
That's a great insight!
Love this video! I'm 99% sure that Bryce's watch is a Seiko or Citizen. (SNXJ90 or similar model.) If you look at the date window at 3 o'clock, it's width suggests a day-date that was pretty typical of Seiko.
Finally somebody commented about this! Thank you so much my eagle eyed friend! I think your on the money with this one
I agree. It's the SNXJ90.
would love to hear a breakdown on the descriptions of everyone's clothings in the novel.
Bankers grey...I never knew that's what it was called! Definitely come in handy...thanks for sharing, man!
Do a rundown like this of outfits from "Only Fools and Horses". Delboy is a sharp dresser.
I'll get my hands on that bossman
While it's super interesting listening to someone well versed in a subject talk about stuff... I cannot actually imagine judging anyone by the suit they wear. It's completely alien to me.
We all analyze people, usually subconsciously, but it's unavoidable to humans, but I don't judge as to mean condemn; that's the major difference. Plus, this is purely because it's a movie and the costume design is 100% intentional, so in reality it's judging the work of the costume designer...
You probably get this a lot but your HAIR is *immaculate*
Yo, thank you so much!!! I'm really glad I decided to grow it out now haha!
The Ocean's 11 remake, along with 12 & 13. There's a LOT of interesting and varied styles in those movies. Each are perfectly tailored to their wearer.
The next character you should analyze is Hannibal Lecter from the TV show (not the movie).
Good idea, bruv!
In italy and I think in general couture is pretty common for men suits aswell even more in the earlier days when it was not "that" expensive
Yeah, you're absolutely right. Bottega Dalmut in Italy is described as couture. Would it be fair to say that it can be applied to ready to wear garments that are hand made using luxury materials?
I really enjoyed this video. Thanks
Thank you so much!
Great one! Please do a film fashion critique on Basic Instinct! A lot of power police suits, bomber jackets and nice aviators and luxurious Hermes beige palettes
Thank you so much! Great idea as well! I'll get my hands on that film asap...
Bless the algorithm, your taste seems to be closest to my own - based on the formal wear, yet flamboyant. I'll look forward to fashion advice from you!
Thank you so much, brother! I'm absolutely honored and appreciate it
All the business cards have the same phone number... XD
Brilliant...just brilliant...
I've never seen your videos before but I love the amount of detail you go through I sure have learned a lot so thank you! I've been getting into fashion more and seeing the range from both sides of the coin is always inspiring. :) Will definitely sub, your vids are straight to it and I like that.
The Rolex you displayed has the wrong dial
Just found your channel, I love it, I’m a big fan of fancy suits such as the typical businessman suit or a suit that just makes you stand out with a good energy that makes you look sophisticated, classy, and ready to go
Thank you, brother! A good suit will really give you that feeling that you can take on the world...it's amazing!
Actually Oliver Peoples is not a luxury eye glass house anymore. They are barely above Ray Ban nowadays. They weren’t even that high end in the 80s but were very popular Amon Wall Street Juniors trying to pass as professionals.
Didn't know that...interesting! Thanks for the facts my dude!
@@DemetriosLevi sure man. BTW sick suit jacket. Been ambivalent on brown but I think this video pushed me over to try it.
@@LuisMercadoorg thanks my dude! Brown has become my favorite color in menswear. Definitely recommend it...goes with nearly everything and is pretty much the earth tone equivalent of grey
Great, now let's see Trailer Park Boys outfits analysis
Impressive, very nice. Let's see Paul Allen's outfit analysis.
If this guy wasn't so likeable I think he could play a really good mob boss, I just get those vibes from him
Hahaha! You're only seeing my good side on camera lmao both of those are huge compliments so thank you much!
Fuck yes! Loving this style overall. Keep it going bro!
Thank you bro! Glad you dig this format...will be doing more like this!
Really great analysis but I wish you analyzed his overcoat too
I know, I should have! Thank you my man!
Bateman is wearing a yellow tie, yellow ties were the shit in the 1980s. it might be a nod to that particular trend then.
Love your channel, now let's see Paul Allen's circumcision scar. I'm guessing it fades appropriately from the shaft to the glans in a subtle shift of fuchsia to a darker shade of coral.
Great Vid Man, keep up the dapper work!
Thank you so much, my homie!! I'm honored
Some information I got for a job interview blue is thr colour of team work, red is the leadership colour. This was of course information published for women as the Internet is constantly publishing articles telling women how to dress. I used to have a "lucky dress" which I wore to my graduation and several interviews, it was burgundy.
I would love to hear your style breakdown for American Hustle, Great Gatsby, Knives Out...etc
Great video. Would love to see you cover Jude Law's fits in "The talented Mr. Ripley."
Great suggestion! Gonna do that for sure!
Fun fact , when they open the card case , it’s the sound of a samurai sword being drawn
Yeah, I noticed that! Such a great little detail that shows how they think of themselves and what they do. The business card is their weapon
16:50 Bryce is rocking one of those old SEIKO watch
My tie is the best.
I just grab water ever tie I feel like wearing with no thought and have my fav for no apparent reason but will wear the ones that get more completes as well the rest get closet dust
This is a video I have long waited for ;D. "Oh my god, is that Valentino Couture?"
Let's see Paul Allen's critique
@@DemetriosLevi You've got enough newspapers to react properly?
Your compliment was sufficient Luis
I just watched the movie this week too!!
Edit: I love anime too!
Crazy movie! And a man of culture I see...salut!
I forgot to mention my fav tie is just satin black
Fashion tips from a Latino Harry Potter lmao
This had me actually laughing out loud 🤣
excellent analysis.
Great video! i think it would be cool if you mentioned the price of the clothing/watches as well.
Bateman was suppose to wear rolex, but! rolex didnt want to associate them with murders so the actual watch was a two tone gold plated seiko 5 (snxj90)
Everything about that guys sports jacket at 12:57 is perfection.
I know right? Il Negozio makes some of the most beautiful sacapetos I've seen
It’s ugly as heck dawg💀💀
the way you say 'bleh' is so unique and enthusiastic
What about a Harvey specter analysis
What about The Wolf of Wall Street?
Ooooh, great idea!
Great analysis! That gray double breasted is indeed *chef's kiss*. Unrelated to the video but how do you feel about turning up jacket sleeves, provided they have surgeon cuffs? Too Miami Vice? - Han
Thank you, brother! It definitely was a work of art....
I actually roll up my sleeves all the time in the summer. It may give a Miami Vice feel, but it's practical, is a great look, and honestly I'm all for it haha!
@@DemetriosLevi Awesome, I'll be doing it more often with your seal of approval! Actually I do it with my work jacket all the time, but always felt sheepish out in the wild 🤷🏻♂️ lol.
14:52 that is part of the reason they all look so similar. You got confused just like the others in the movie as to who's who.
Exactly! Haha!
Patrick is actually wearing a Seiko in the film and not a Rolex. They look very similar and he was actually meant to wear a Rolex but wasn’t allowed to. Kinda funny because his Rolex is mentioned by name several times in the book but obviously never in the movie because Rolex said no.
Well this gives me a new light to see the movie with. ❤
Been waiting for this one brother
I hope it was worth it!
@@DemetriosLevi Even better than Paul Allen's card
Thank you.
I dig Your style Demetrios, how did You discover Your style?
wow! great analysis, i didn’t have notice all the significance of the clothes and color representation. I suscribe to your channel.
Hey! Isn't this a coincidence?
I too confused Marcus with David Van Patten when I first watched the movie.
Well they definitely made their point about everyone confusing each other for somebody else haha! Brilliant
that guid uses pinstripes overlaid with silk stitching. My clotjer was named Valtin Brusio yust he past in 1997 in age over90 , well it is good to have some dat suit person pasd away often .
have you read the book? It's a wonderful book, you might find it really interesting since a large amount of the book is actually batemand discribing people's suits.
No comment on how they misspelled ‘Acquisitions’ on their cards?
Always struck me as a particular comment of note. Bunch of idiots so obsessed with the style and color…..they miss the details of the literal purpose of the card.
Hilarious.
That's right! I knew about it but forgot all about it for this... totally missed opportunity!
Hey man, great content as always. Since you are looking at style and personality, what about Ocean's 11, 12, 13?
Oooh great idea! I'll start working on that...thanks so much!
Great video! Love the KA side blow. :D
Thanks so much, Nik!! Always an honor !
Great video! You should do Mad Men next !
Great idea! Thank you so much!
@@DemetriosLevi Anytime!
Have you checked out Pat's coats? Some of the only timeless pieces in the movie
One of my favourite films and a great Video 👍🏽
Thank you bro!
I enjoyed watching this video 👏🏽 thanks for your efforts
Thank you for watching, my friend! I appreciate it
Now let's see Paul Allens' fashion film critique
Your point about the business card scene being pure anime is absolutely spot-on
Thanks brother! I'm really surprised that hasn't been a larger topic of discussion... Shows that you can make anime style live action work super well if done right
Eric Andre, nice
Finally somebody mentions him! Literally today I was thinking about how nobody has appreciated Eric
They are all wearing Seikos because Rolex didnt want to be affiliated with the movie, if you put some research into it you can easily find the original model... but its supposed to look like the Rolex you showed in the beginning
Seiko made a lot of Rolex replicas too
@@Gilbertify1 yea and people don’t know that also
