Thank you!! I was told this was a yarn under that I recently started trying on my new amigurumi project (I'm very new to crochet so I've been sticking to those beginner kits so far), but I had no idea it was called a cross stitch!
Don't feel bad, I've been crocheting on and off for close to 40 years and just learned this today! Look up videos for even edges, it will be worth it, I promise!
My brain will not allow me to yarn under. I’ve been doing yarn over since I began crocheting 4 years ago, and that’s how I learned. Yarning under would take too much mental rewiring and that would take the fun and joy out of crocheting for me.
I haven't done any amigurumi just yet, but this explains why sometimes my stiches are odd or uneven because I didn't realize that the way you grab the yarn would change the stitch, so good to know. 😅
Definitely a youtube gem of information! Thank you from a brand new crocheter. I was just trying to pull loops of consistant size. Happy for uniformity of any kind. But now i know one of the elusive secrets of the masters... Levelled up just now! Thank you!
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCHH!!!! I’m a cross stitcher and when i saw people crocheting amigurumis looking like fluffy 3D cross stitch plushies, I immediately bought a crochet kit! However, mine was turning out like the left side and i kept thinking maybe my tension is all over the place! However, after doing this way I’m finally getting the stitches i initially started crochet for!! Thank you again& ❤🎉
That's wild. I've been learning for the last week and a half, and the yarn over/under thing confused me for a bit. I wasn't sure how much it mattered, and the terminology messed with my brain, as I think of the actions in terms of the hook (yarn under = hook over). I've gotten more comfortable with the basics now, so I'll definitely be mindful about this. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much for sharing your crochet journey! 😊 You're absolutely right - the yarn over/under terminology can be tricky when you're starting out, and it's completely normal to feel confused at first. It's great that you're becoming more comfortable with the basics - that's a huge achievement for just a week and a half of learning! I love how you're thinking about the mechanics in your own way (hook over vs yarn under) - sometimes finding our own way to understand techniques makes them stick better in our minds. Keep practicing and exploring what works best for you. If you have any questions as you continue learning, feel free to ask! And I'd love to see your progress if you'd like to share. Happy crocheting! 🧶✨
I totally understand what you mean-I also dislike when the stuffing peeks through! It can be so frustrating, but finding the right tension and using smaller hooks really helps. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
i do this for decreases because it's the only way i can make them tight and neat but i never thought to do it for all the stitches. it makes so much sense! thanks for the tip!
oohhhhh so you yarn under to pull up the loop, and then after that you can yarn over to finish the stitch! i was only yarning under to finish the stitch and wondering why it wasnt working, this is super helpful thank you!
They are both great, yarn under is harder in my hands so I don’t prefer it. But I don’t believe one looks more professional than the other, they are just different.
I came across this video when I just started crocheting. Coming back, I'm so grateful that I've watched this video as a beginner. if i never watched this video, I'm sure I'm just full of regrets after finishing my crochet projects with awful stitches. thank you very much
NOTICE: NOTE: She first does a yarn under, and then a yarn over in the steps of the single crochet.... i.e. it is NOT a yarn under for both of the yarn pull throughs!!!! This is very cool!! Thank you for sharing this!!!
Ohhhh I've just been doing whatever holds onto the thread easier 😅 I wrap it from under before pulling back through and over the top when I pull through again because it's more sturdy on the hook
I used to crochet normally but i randomly picked up that habit from watching someone’s hook in a random tutorial😭 i just thought it was a weird and different way of hooking it and i decided to do it because why not. I had my suspicions that it made the stitches look different but i thought i was just imagining it 😭
Thank you I wanted to learn to do this for a long time and I have been making a tube for a cross body strap for my daughter. This will give me lots of practice.
Thanks for the tip! ❤️ I always yarn over instead of yarning under , but I still get the X stitch! I don't know what's causing that to happen , but I'm happy hahaha
You explain and demonstrate so well. I'm still trying to learn the classic American single stitch, how to do chains, tension, and the magic circle. It's all so difficult and intimidating, I can't get tensioning down for the life of me and makes me want to just quit 😂
I've been trying that but it looks the same on mine, idk! I'm fairly experienced but my x stitch still doesn't look much better or tighter than a regular. Yours looks great tho!
What? Nah, it makes the gaps between rows so deep and ugly and on top all that mess. I create patterns and they look really nice but I alwqys hated how the structure just looked like I vomited the yarn in shape. With the x-stich it's just perfect and even, showing the details. Also the faces are lovely now
You get a similar look when you knit with single stitches and then turn it inside out. Depending on the shape you are crocheting it also hides the little yarn end
thank you so much for this info I've never knew it before.. i was wondering so long time about why did the stitches of other amigurumi looks so neat and perfect i thought it becoz of the size of the yarn and i was wrong 😆
Haha, I was like WAIT a second that's how all my amigurumi look! And then I remembered I taught myself and I've always done it wrong (grabbing my yarn in front). I've always known that I just crochet slightly differently than everybody else, but this is probably why it's always so tight lol Thank you for this video! 💜
Ah purée ! Vous piquez ma curiosité, il faut que j’essaie tout-de-suite ! 🤣 Merci de partager les p’tits secrets pour nous aider à nous améliorer😘. Amitié de Suisse !
Just for everyone in the comments, whichever way you do it. You're still professional and you're doing it your own way. Theres not really a right or wrong, just have fun.

FYI to newbies- this is an example of “yarn under” instead of the usual “yarn over”

I didn’t think it did either

Now I know why my amigurumi looked different. Thank you!
@@MICKEYMICKEYog you can't be og I'm og 💯 lmao 🤣
to be honest, i prefer the messy stitch look!! it makes everything look super handmade and just adds to a certain vibe
Yeah me too but not too lumpy
agreed 👍👍👍👍👍
you're making me wonder if i should do the neat one or the messy one now....
sammmmmmmmmmmmmme its got that✨handmade✨look

It also called Yarn under instead of yarning over

I’m glad that when I first started crochet I didnt listen to the tutorials properly so I was used to making the “x stitch”
I’ve been losing my mind wondering why mine doesn’t look the same as the pictures. Thank you.
So a yarn under instead of yarn over, I've seen some other people do this and I'll definitely try it!
Isn't it the opposite way? She yarned over instead of under.
@@x_.mizuki._x3231 she keeps her hook on top of the yarn, so the "yarn" is "under" the hook
I suppose the same thing could be achieved by just holding the yarn tighter
@@x_.mizuki._x3231 no because yarn under is where the yarn in under the hook
😱 I was just about to post that 😅❤
I have been doing this unintentionally :D
I think everybody did it at least once
Same…. I sometimes switch back and forth based on what’s more comfortable at any given time. Had no clue it produces such different results!

Same
I haven't done any amigurumi just yet, but this explains why sometimes my stiches are odd or uneven because I didn't realize that the way you grab the yarn would change the stitch, so good to know. 😅
Either way, stitches will look nice and be uniform if the tension is consistent. Odd stitches is usually due to variation in the tension.
Wow! The fact that something so simple makes such a huge difference! Thank you!
I agree with you
I heard that yarning under, instead of over kept the stitches tighter, but it's good to see a comparison in action.
I've been crocheting for years and I've always done it this way. I now understand why mine didn't look the same as the pattern pictures 😅
You are the reason why my amigurumi looks sooooo much better THANK YOU ❤
I'm so glad!
This is how I learned/taught myself to do amigurumi! It makes a gigantic difference and doesn't take any extra effort.
Very cool! I wasn't aware what difference the way you hold the needle can make. Thank's for sharing, love! 💖💖💖👍

This suggestion brought me to the next level, thank you!

I’ve heard others mention that yarn under might be better for Amigurumi. I’m new and learned with yarn over but will try this on my next one.
I learned this a few weeks ago while doing some basic amigurumi and it's worth learning. You can see thee difference.
That's absolutely true🥰
I've been doing it that way because it's faster, I didn't realize it changed the stitch appearance! I'll be extra mindful to do it this way now lol
Huh..
You learn something new every day
Definitely using this technique
That's correct
Honestly I’m glad to hear this because i find yarn under more comfortable and have accidentally been doing that with every stitch anyways
Good to know! I hate it when the stuffing shows through the holes

Yarn under instead of over : brilliant 🤩

Try doing your normal stitch then at the end turn it inside out. There are instruction videos on this technique.

@@kimcraft it worked REALLY well for me!!!! Definitely continuing this from here on out!
Is it better to go yarn under twice. I noticed that you go yarn under then yarn over. Is yarn under, then yarn under for the single crochet better?
So instead of doing YO (Yarn Over), you just do YU (Yarn Under). Idk if it’s different terminology or not. UK versus US terms. Lol.
This was an eye opener! Thanx so very much!🥰👍🏻👏🏻
