Belly dancing is sexy, fun, and burns up a lot of calories to boot! In this video, belly dancer Irina Akulenko teaches you how to do chest lifts. You'll be shaking it like Shakira in no time.
Belly Dance Moves Chest Lifts:
Now we're going to try to do the chest lift. Let's assume our basic belly dance posture position, arms out, chest lifted, knees pressed together, tailbone down and you're going to feel the muscles in your upper back. Try not to slide the shoulders down the back, you're going to lift the ribcage all the way up and release back down. As you lift you're going to feel a squeeze right between the shoulder blades and as you bring the chest down, you're going to feel your upper abs get engaged and contract all the way down. Lifting all the way up and dropping all the way down. And what you want to avoid is using your breath, meaning if you want to try this in the beginning you might want to inhale all the way up and exhale all the way down but you want to find those isolations without using your breath. So you're going to lift all the way up and drop all the way down and up and let's try that with music. As you're lifting be careful not to arch your lower back, so you want to keep the tailbone pointing down no matter what. And again relax the neck, lifting up and down. And a little bit faster, reaching straight up and down. When you're comfortable with this movement, add the arms and try it with the arms overhead and bring the hands down. And that's how you isolate the chest going up and down.

It can take some time to become aware of the rhomboids (the muscles between the shoulder blades), but once you do, it feels amazing. Rhomboids are also key to shimmy the shoulders as the movement comes from the back, not the shoulder itself. At first I didn't even know I had these muscles!
I'm just trying to do this for the first time. This is a lot harder than it looks. I have no isolation at all, I can't even bring my arms up while doing this movement. But I am having fun with this :)
Also, anyone else finding their thighs burn from just the basic belly dance position? Or is it just me?? It's probably just me because I've gotten out of shape 😂
A key tip is to practice isolation excercises. Those will be your best friends while trying to learn belly dancing

Hi. I don't get much range of movement with my chest lifts, and pretty much zero with my arms raised. Is there any way I can improve? just practice, or is every ones range of movement different. ? Would stretching or strengthening certain areas of the body help? And if so, which ones?

Great job trying to help people but since I'm Middle Eastern I'd ask you to maybe practice a little more, watch more videos of Egyptian and Lebanese dancers since most of the moves you are teaching are missing a little of technique, for example for this move in the video you don't use your back, if the instructor who taught you was not Middle Eastern I wouldn't trust them, cuz in the ME there are no schools that teaches BellyDance its something that comes naturally. AllTheBest ^^
