Discuss with your doctor first, but belly dance is a great low impact exercise that will improve posture, balance, bone density and core strength, which should alleviate some pain. Stop anything painful and modify as needed, muscle fatigue is normal, and you should be able to participate as long as it feels good! Please be sure to warm up and cool down after class; do what you can when you can, and you'll see as time goes by you will get stronger and range of motion will get better! xoxo MissP

I'm 18, I've been living a sedentary life for 5 years, locked up in my home with a lot of depression, feeling bad about my body but without having the courage to face reality, I was only motivated by wanting to learn belly dance, to be honest I get tired very quickly, my heart races and I have to stop myself to breathe and take a break for some minutes, It makes me feel bad since I'm too young to be so physically ill, But this girl makes me feel that I can learn the way she teaches and encourages us to practice, I can't pay for classes, or go to a gym, but I know that with time and effort I will be With more resistance and I will learn to dance what I like the most, thank you for this opportunity that you are giving us, God bless you today, tomorrow and always! ❤❤❤

I agree that a truly good teacher isn't one who can take a good dancer and make them great. It's a teacher who can take someone who can't follow a beat and make them a dancer in the first place. She certainly does this in her videos.

IAs someone who is neurodivergent and needs physical activity to be appealing in order to do it at all, this is one of the most fun workout videos I have ever done! Portia, you are an excellent motivator and guider, you made me laugh! Thank you very much for these videos
I'm only recently coming to terms with my own neurodivergence. I used to be a professional belly dancer, and now it seems to take so much emotional and mental energy (and/or caffeine!) to do any physical activity. It's comforting to know that it's ok and normal for that to be the case - since I've been away from dancing for a long time. And yes, this video has me looking forward to doing more instead of crawling back in bed! --- I think part of it is that I don't have to make decisions when I'm taking a class. I find the moves easy in a technical sense (because I did this dancing for a couple of decades), but still challenging in that I can focus on my technique, stamina, flexibility, range, control, etc. And there's something about the whole class, with the other students, that makes me feel motivated and comfortable. Also, dancing and music have a lot of emotional force for me. In this kind of class, the music is just fun, and I can just listen to the teacher - who brings my mind back to the present when it tries to wander off... Interestingly, if I'm teaching someone else how to dance, suddenly it's fun again! I think it's for the same reasons: I'm present but don't have to think to hard about decisions. Thank you for bringing this up so I could reflect on my experience too.

I always wanted to be a dancer as a child but was always forced to other things that were considered to be more successful career paths. I am finally fully embracing dance at almost 28 years old and dancing every day and I feel like I was made for this. ❤
At 28, I thought I was too old, go for it! You are still very young! Trust me, I am now 46, wishing I knew this at 28. Don't give up. You can still make Dance a career. Train, learn, and find a mentor!

I’ve been learning online for years and taking my first in person classes now. I think this class hits all the important ABCs we need daily. On a more health note I suffer from constant back pain and this set is such a relief for my spine. Without a class dynamic the repetition gets monotonous and and the opposite happens here. I just found this video and I love it! I'm 73 and exercise regularly and walk. I still have a jelly roll that I think this routine will help with. It's a hell of a workout and I couldn't finish it, but I will! I like to dance to rock n roll so I am limber for an old gal!

I'm basically rehabilitating now. This is the first video I chose to watch on my journey back to Raqs Sharqi. I'm so grateful for your positive vibes and infectious energy as well as your lovely students. This video was just the right pace and variety of movement. I also just realized that I like how you *don't* label movements. I can't explain exactly why, but maybe it has something to do with focussing on things in a more organic way, trying more nuance and variation without compartmentalizing. Anyway, you're magic! This was really different from all of the other exercise videos I have tried. I was intrigued by the part when you swing each hip forward. Brand new to me! Thank you for introducing me to the "forbidden" dance. (I used to think so as a kid).

I LOVE that you talk about movement accents. I've always compared learning to dance with learning languages (I've taught both), but I never thought about describing individual movement styles as accents. That's especially true considering previous movement experience (whether it's sports or dance or yoga or whatever). Brilliant!

Hi, I'm recovering from being bed bound and my physio has suggested that I make exercise fun. I've always wanted to Learn belly dance (and other dances). I'm laying in bed, distracting myself from chronic pain by practising tucking my pelvis in. I can also do shimmeys in bed. When I'm having a good day I'm going to try to do a few minutes of the basic moves in this video. I might even be able to do some sitting up in my bed or a chair. I just wanted to thankyou for putting this video on RUclips for free and for including the moves slowed down to start with. I have other videos and even DVDs but most are moving so fast during the teaching that I won't keep up. Your clear, simple explanations make me excited for when I can try to follow along again. I love watching this. I'm doing paperwork right now and Its helping me stay focused while I get it finished. Hopefully tomorrow I can actually do the workout!!
I'm not a professional, just someone learning to dance. I was told that you should pull your belly button towards your spine like someone poked you in the tummy and tighten your butt/bum as if someone slapped it... You could even try rocking your bum backwards and forwards by pushing your bum back and then forwards...it feels weird when you start because you are changing the way the muscles are supporting your upper body. I am recovering from being bed bound so I practise tucking my pelvis when I'm in bed laying down as well as if I'm standing somewhere waiting in a line. Check in, focus on how you feel, with how you are laying down or standing up, when you go about your day. You are looking to be positioning your body in the middle of how far forward and back you can move your belly button and bum so your spine/back doesn't get sore as you move. I tend to slouch so my belly is forward and my bum is back so the S shape in my spine is more curved and it makes my back hurt. If you truly can't tuck your pelvis you should see a physiotherapist who can check you out and give you specific exercises to help you out. My physio has said that learning a dance like belly dance can teach me how to hold my body in a better position and help with pain and discomfort. Blessings from South Eastern Australia, Dot

I often find it hard to enjoy dancing because I get all muddled up but you really create a welcoming atmosphere with great reminders to breathe and feel into movement. Discuss with your doctor first, but belly dance is a great low impact exercise that will improve posture, balance, bone density and core strength, which should alleviate some pain. Stop anything painful and modify as needed, muscle fatigue is normal, and you should be able to participate as long as it feels good! Please be sure to warm up and cool down after class; do what you can when you can, and you'll see as time goes by you will get stronger and range of motion will get better! xoxo MissP

I'm 18, I've been living a sedentary life for 5 years, locked up in my home with a lot of depression, feeling bad about my body but without having the courage to face reality, I was only motivated by wanting to learn belly dance, to be honest I get tired very quickly, my heart races and I have to stop myself to breathe and take a break for some minutes, It makes me feel bad since I'm too young to be so physically ill, But this girl makes me feel that I can learn the way she teaches and encourages us to practice, I can't pay for classes, or go to a gym, but I know that with time and effort I will be With more resistance and I will learn to dance what I like the most, thank you for this opportunity that you are giving us, God bless you today, tomorrow and always! ❤❤❤

Best teacher there on youtube for belly dance ...she really knows how to train even the most beginner out of step slow person who never danced anything ..i can't follow left to right in time 😂.. i can't follow any complicated moves and most people go too fast for me..i love her personality .I m 50 I don't a workout where I feel like I will pass out in 10 mins 😅😅

I agree that a truly good teacher isn't one who can take a good dancer and make them great. It's a teacher who can take someone who can't follow a beat and make them a dancer in the first place. She certainly does this in her videos.

I'm only recently coming to terms with my own neurodivergence. I used to be a professional belly dancer, and now it seems to take so much emotional and mental energy (and/or caffeine!) to do any physical activity. It's comforting to know that it's ok and normal for that to be the case - since I've been away from dancing for a long time. And yes, this video has me looking forward to doing more instead of crawling back in bed! --- I think part of it is that I don't have to make decisions when I'm taking a class. I find the moves easy in a technical sense (because I did this dancing for a couple of decades), but still challenging in that I can focus on my technique, stamina, flexibility, range, control, etc. And there's something about the whole class, with the other students, that makes me feel motivated and comfortable. Also, dancing and music have a lot of emotional force for me. In this kind of class, the music is just fun, and I can just listen to the teacher - who brings my mind back to the present when it tries to wander off...
Interestingly, if I'm teaching someone else how to dance, suddenly it's fun again! I think it's for the same reasons: I'm present but don't have to think to hard about decisions.

I’ve been learning online for years and taking my first in person classes now. I think this class hits all the important ABCs we need daily. On a more health note I suffer from constant back pain and this set is such a relief for my spine. Without a class dynamic the repetition gets monotonous and and the opposite happens here. I just found this video and I love it! I'm 73 and exercise regularly and walk. I still have a jelly roll that I think this routine will help with. It's a hell of a workout and I couldn't finish it, but I will! I like to dance to rock n roll so I am limber for an old gal!

I'm basically rehabilitating now. This is the first video I chose to watch on my journey back to Raqs Sharqi. I'm so grateful for your positive vibes and infectious energy as well as your lovely students. This video was just the right pace and variety of movement. I also just realized that I like how you *don't* label movements. I can't explain exactly why, but maybe it has something to do with focussing on things in a more organic way, trying more nuance and variation without compartmentalizing. Anyway, you're magic! This was really different from all of the other exercise videos I have tried. I was intrigued by the part when you swing each hip forward. Brand new to me! Thank you for introducing me to the "forbidden" dance. (I used to think so as a kid).

I LOVE that you talk about movement accents. I've always compared learning to dance with learning languages (I've taught both), but I never thought about describing individual movement styles as accents. That's especially true considering previous movement experience (whether it's sports or dance or yoga or whatever). Brilliant!

Hi, I'm recovering from being bed bound and my physio has suggested that I make exercise fun. I've always wanted to Learn belly dance (and other dances). I'm laying in bed, distracting myself from chronic pain by practising tucking my pelvis in. I can also do shimmeys in bed.
When I'm having a good day I'm going to try to do a few minutes of the basic moves in this video. I might even be able to do some sitting up in my bed or a chair.
I just wanted to thankyou for putting this video on RUclips for free and for including the moves slowed down to start with. I have other videos and even DVDs but most are moving so fast during the teaching that I won't keep up.
Your clear, simple explanations make me excited for when I can try to follow along again.

ever since i was growing up, one of my many favorite cultures were arabic and egyptian, i completely fell in love with bellydancing and it's a great workout to lose pounds, it's just so beautiful to me especially when you got some egyptian musk or frankincense and myrrh incense burning as you do this.

I love your classes ! I've been jumping from one video to another on RUclips without finding a teacher that really click with me, and I'm so happy I've found you ! There are no belly dance classes from where I am so I can only rely on internet to learn, and I feel like I'm way more comfortable with your classes ! I'm not a professional, just someone learning to dance. I was told that you should pull your belly button towards your spine like someone poked you in the tummy and tighten your butt/bum as if someone slapped it... You could even try rocking your bum backwards and forwards by pushing your bum back and then forwards...it feels weird when you start because you are changing the way the muscles are supporting your upper body.
I am recovering from being bed bound so I practise tucking my pelvis when I'm in bed laying down as well as if I'm standing somewhere waiting in a line. Check in, focus on how you feel, with how you are laying down or standing up, when you go about your day. You are looking to be positioning your body in the middle of how far forward and back you can move your belly button and bum so your spine/back doesn't get sore as you move.
I tend to slouch so my belly is forward and my bum is back so the S shape in my spine is more curved and it makes my back hurt.
If you truly can't tuck your pelvis you should see a physiotherapist who can check you out and give you specific exercises to help you out. My physio has said that learning a dance like belly dance can teach me how to hold my body in a better position and help with pain and discomfort.

I’ve wanted to belly dance for the longest time. Your energy and clear instruction has really made this a fun experience for me-even if challenging. I often find it hard to enjoy dancing because I get all muddled up but you really create a welcoming atmosphere with great reminders to breathe and feel into movement. It’s what dance should be: connection to the body and I don’t often experience that. Thank you for your videos!
