  • @Khg72
    @Khg72 3 года назад +12

    Launching I do it mostly on 5500 - 6000 rpm and you need to hear the tires squeal and the rpm will be reaching 7000 in 1st , than drop a little on 5750rpm in 2nd. And to prevent clutch/cv joint damage make sure your tires are properly inflated just 1 psi above normal, and avoid heavy clutch dumping that can destroy release bearings and or gears.

    • @pascha4527
      @pascha4527 2 года назад +1

      On my old 05 I would launch at 4000, just about when the boost start, then riding the clutch a little bit (with a decent clutch it was perfect), the launches were incredibly fast.

    the 0-60s in these would be so much faster if 2nd topped out just a little later

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  4 года назад +26

      Actually I do believe it will hit 60 in 2nd, if you rev it out far enough, but then it starts to run out of breath. I remember the magazines said it was faster to 60 than the STI because it could actually hit 60 in 2nd unlike the STI, unless I'm getting my cars confused- but I'm pretty sure that's correct.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  4 года назад +9

      Nah it's good lol. I refuse to drop it any higher than 5000 or it would smoke it, and I will only do 5000 if I'm racing. My typical full throttle launches are dragging it from 3000, which takes forever to get going by comparison because I have almost no boost doing that. All the car magazines drop it at redline and that's the only reason they get 0-60 as fast as they do at under 5.5 sec. If you notice I only got there in about 6-6.2 seconds at best dropping it from 5ish. One of the magazines had to replace their clutch at only 20 some thousand miles on a long term test, and they admitted it was from all the redline full throttle launches. 5k launches here and there should let the clutch live to at least 100,000 easy...

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  4 года назад

      Yeah, really bad misfire at full throttle which cuts about 50% power that won't go away and throws no codes so I can't track it down. I replaced the plugs and it fixed it for about a month or so, then it started doing it again. So now I suspect coil packs, but 68k is really low miles for a coil pack to fail. Gonna try replacing the coil packs and see if that finally fixes it once and for all. Driver window motor acts up from time to time. As soon as window goes up, it immediately drops half way down again. I have to sit there and fiddle with it to get it to stay up. Only a couple vents are blowing cold and the others don't. Topped off ac and it went hot again after only a few days. Passenger speaker has been blown since we got it at only 57k miles. That's a lot of damn issues for a low mileage car that costs $20k and is only a few years old. My buddy has one also and he had different issues with his. Bad bearing at only 20k miles, and most recently something to do with some evap pump system or something for the gas tank with under 60k on it. He just traded it in on a 2020 WRX because he didn't want to deal with it anymore.

What's funnier though is that those cars absolutely are not faster. Also what they fail to realize is this car only has 268hp, so 0-60 in the 5's and a 1/4 mile time of around 14 flat is actually pretty impressive for a 3400lb car with 268hp. The cars they quote have more power and still can't turn those numbers 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @BuckeyeBallistics  2 года назад

      I mean, it's still going strong and I just replaced the clutch and flywheel a few weeks ago at around 90k. It really depends on the year because they kept improving them and making them stonger year by year- for all I know you're talking about an older one. Regardless, it's still golden (for now).

      @senseicorey9979 2 года назад

      Do you launch it like this often? I have an 02 and 2nd gear blew up at 65k . Replaced with the sti 5 speed (look it up) and havnt had problems since but I've never launched it

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  2 года назад

      Yeah see, that's exactly what I'm talking about. You're talking about the very first (US) generation that is almost 20 years old- those were notorious for that problem (I had a black 02 WRX 8 years ago). There have been a lot of improvements to the transmissions since then. The current WRX transmission is probably stronger than the 03-04 STI trans.
      I forget which magazine it was, (Car&Driver/Motor Trend), but they were riding around in the 2015 WRX with a Subaru rep and he (subi rep) told them to redline dump the clutch over and over for 0-60 times because they weren't going to break the transmission (because it was so strong). They literally put that in the publication. Only problem they had was in their long term test review (40k miles)- their factory clutch was shot before 40k but they admitted it was from hundreds of redline launches.
      But yeah, the current generation (15-21) transmissions are way stronger than the originals. As for your j-spec sti 5-speed swap, I don't know anything about those.
