I drove the WRX and STI TODAY back to back. Thanks to Hatfield Subaru of Grove City Ohio. I started the WRX ...a beautiful tone. I drove it around their test loop. Then on I-270 for 5 miles down and back. Terrific car. Got out of that car and immediately jumped in a STI. I started the car. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD. I took the car around their test loop. Then on I-270 for 5 miles down and back. I put the setting on Track Plus Mode in the beginning and finished with the fuel saving...soft mode. Long story...short. I will be purchasing the STI. It is STUNNING! I am grateful to afford it. The WRX IS so very nice. Much more affordable. The STI is outrageous. Stinking Fun. Fuel economy is not fun. Economy and STI do not relate. However, The STI and I do relate. It is what it is. I am what I am.
Just got my silver base model a few days ago. Putting my 02 wrx sportwagon up for sale...So obviously very happy with the new car. Going to miss my 02. Has 161k hard, fun miles. Never had a single issue. Amazing how proper maintenance and good design make a car last.
Just bought a white base with short throw shifter, this car might not be the fastest or best looking car out there, but it is a lot of fun and pretty practical with awd and getting around 29 mpg.
It actually looks better in person, in fact the interior just looks awesome, feels more mature like the Legacy. A couple arrived at my local dealership in Coconut Creek, FL
I can vouch for that. I sat in the 2015 STI and took a good look and it's so much better in person. But for the price difference I may go with the WRX since it's so much better now.
+christian Chichester John H. Davis is the creator & producer of Motor Week which has been around since '81 and with over 1600 episodes. Brian Cooley is just a hack working for CNET by comparison.
Wow this is weird. John Davis shares a common name with me, something I noticed in the 1980s when I was a kid, and I've been interviewed by Brian Cooley.
Liking the car. It took a while for me to like the car but overall the car looks it will be able to deliver on all major aspects: Styling, Performance, Reliability, Power, Fuel Economy, and spirit. I'm hoping I get mine wish me luck. I've always wanted this car because it fits the needs I look for in a vehicle. I'd love to own one. Good Job Subaru.
@tungoloo do it man u will like it alot, the souls that these subies have get u hooked and u will always like them. Have had a subaru in the family since 1990.
Average buddy had one. It was a great car. I Ended up going with a Focus RS, but the Subie’s are still great cars. PS: I traded my Hellcat Challenger in for the Focus RS.
I bet the CVT wrx gets dropped after this year or next. It sounds like a weed whacker on 0-60 videos in sport mode. If I'm buying an AWD rally car, it's either going to be a 5spd or a 6 spd manual. CVTs are for minivans, lol.
christian Chichester Duh! that's the point, shifting wakes u up, rather that just sit there the whole way. It's so obvious u don"t know how to drive a stick
This car makes my mouth water! I want to get rid of my G35 for a 2015-2018 wrx or sti and in white or black. I just can't afford it :( In white with tints and black wheels would look perfect!
What the heck happened to john davis? It's obvious he lost alot of weight but the tan? can someone tell me what happened to him...? Is his health good he kinda looks sickly? JW
Something to share, the 0-60 times on all reviews are a bit off on this car and believing that you have to shift into third to reach the speed. GPS testing done on my 2015 wrx premium I have been able to hit 60 consistantly at just over 4.5 seconds. I haven't had the chance to check the quarter mile times on a professional dragstrip yet but I'm betting I prove those slow as well.
Dct is unusable in a Subaru. Subaru is a practical car. Like a multi tool. It should be able to pull a caravan, heavy trailer or go trough sand or 6-7 inches of soft snow.. Dct will just shit itself and die if you require it to work reliably under those conditions, especially when pulling loads at slow speed. Cvt has a torque converter. So it can handle the slow speeds better than manual or dct transmission.
Whole all wheel drive peroformance is great, but cant get over new unispired styling. If debaged it looks like kia or suzuki:( hope 2016 mazdaspeed 3 would be awd!
Just 13.9 seconds in the quarter mile? They reviewed the Acura TL SH-AWD, which had the same numbers. This car should be faster then that in the quarter mile.
John Vu That doesn't mean it actually is "super handling", motortrend and car and driver both had the Acura TL SH awd Standing @¼-mile: 14.7 sec @ 98 mph and if you want to get really technical the Acura TL SH gets 0.86 g in a skid pad while the wrx gets closer to 0.96 or 0.97 g. It's safe to say the WR-X would handle much better but in a straight drag it's debatable.
You can get a WRX new for $27k. You can't touch a TL for under $30k. That's $30 a month if you're financing and that's make or break for a lot of people. Besides, the base model TL for $30k can't keep up with a base model WRX. You'd have to get the V6 model for another $10k.
It also has a driver controlled center differential allowing you to change the front to rear torque split. Say you turn into a corner in the snow and have understeer, the STi can help eliminate that.
Not really, I have a 2016 WRX (stock) and my dad has a 2003 WRX, with an STi turbo, STi fuel injectors, AEM fuel rail, and I beat him by one car length
This car just looks boring and uninspired. And it's ridiculous that Subaru only gave it a 3hp bump with a modest torque increase. For 2015, the base WRX should be pushing 300hp, and the Sti should be near 350. I don't care if it if handles better either, because the majority of the peeps buying this car will never flog it on a track like Motorweek or any of the others. Pass.
I live in WA. I go up to the Mtns. all the time to just drive the windy roads. up there, you dont need any more HP. the WRX handles like a dream. 268hp is plenty stock. get a few aftermarkets and you have your 300+ if you need it.
sound like you haven't driven one a on windy road/track. while it make look that way, the car is anything but boring an uninspired when you push it into a corner.
You lost me at 'sorry boy racers'. Perhaps all that fake tan has seeped into your bald head causing some sort of brain malfunction, because you have clearly forgotten that you review cars for a living and you rely on us, the motoring enthusiast as your reason for being. It is highly disappointing to hear you throw out comments based upon the negative stereotypes too commonly associated with your audience.
***** I couldn't agree more and perhaps I was being overly sensitive. I fall into the target demographic you have described. Hence, I took offence at the perception he was insinuating that if you drive a WRX, or are interested in one, you are by default a boy racer.
i love how motorweek still feels like a 90s auto show. lol
I wanted to give u a "thumbs up" but didnt want to ruin the "90" number
I literally scrolled down to comment exactly that lol

This comment is amazing

Why is this guy talking like I won something on the price is right
+christian Chichester Because, this guy is legend.
+Ausare911 no Brian Cooley is a legend

You'll still have to go after market if waking the neighbors is your goal. Hahahah
@tungoloo do it man u will like it alot, the souls that these subies have get u hooked and u will always like them. Have had a subaru in the family since 1990.
I think im falling for this car. I might trade in my mazdaspeed 3.

I am imprezzed by all the puns you are able to come up in every single video here.
...
Ok I will see myself out
You can't just lay a pun out like that... made me spit up my drink from laughing...
Sorry to hear the hatch is gone. Great car.
subaru is thinking to bring back the hatch wot.motortrend.com/1404_we_hear_2015_subaru_wrx_hatch_under_consideration.html
Whoa, John Davis turned black!
Whoa the President of the United States is not black
the WRX has not broken away from the Impreza
Why the heck would u want an automatic wrx?
because you need to look at potential buyers... up until about 09 model they offered an automatic WRX.. so there is nothing new here...
I bet the CVT wrx gets dropped after this year or next. It sounds like a weed whacker on 0-60 videos in sport mode. If I'm buying an AWD rally car, it's either going to be a 5spd or a 6 spd manual. CVTs are for minivans, lol.
Mark Fernandez because when people have to get up in the morning to go to work they're not trying to shift their own gear half asleep.

This guy still living in the 90's lol
70's
love this car, now go watch the review on new wrx 2022, you'll be so sad
"Sorry boy racers" LOL!!!!
I paid 27 for my 13 Legacy 3.6 R limited, and with Mobil 1 sys 5-30 I've been getting 24-26 mix driving and 28 freeway...
Wrx does better on freeway
Mobile 1 is terrible for subarus

If Subaru wants to attract automatic owners they should make a DCT not a CVT.
Dct is unusable in a Subaru. Subaru is a practical car. Like a multi tool. It should be able to pull a caravan, heavy trailer or go trough sand or 6-7 inches of soft snow.. Thats the one i want color and everything, give me give me.

Acura TL SH-AWD is a much more expensive car and TL will disappear as soon as you finish making that first tight corner. =)
Do you know what SH means? That TL handles like a sports car and it is an Acura...that car can perform well.
John Vu
That doesn't mean it actually is "super handling", motortrend and car and driver both had the Acura TL SH awd Standing @¼-mile: 14.7 sec @ 98 mph and if you want to get really technical the Acura TL SH gets 0.86 g in a skid pad while the wrx gets closer to 0.96 or 0.97 g. Ummm, you may want to look at used car prices.
I watched the hatchback than a sedan
Also STI is not worth whole .5 sec faster for almost $8k over wrx!
It also has a driver controlled center differential allowing you to change the front to rear torque split. Say you turn into a corner in the snow and have understeer, the STi can help eliminate that.
Rick LeRoy yes, it is worth the 8k sticker upgrade.
For some people 8k is really not a big deal.
yes it is if you live down under , a commodore ss ls3 is 5 cheaper
Slow. Just as fast as 2002 model. Weight and hearing probably the factors.
Maybe just as fast in a straight line but this new generation is much better and faster around the corners.
Not really, I have a 2016 WRX (stock) and my dad has a 2003 WRX, with an STi turbo, STi fuel injectors, AEM fuel rail, and I beat him by one car length
Sometimes you sound like a robot, sometimes you sound like an old fool!
I know this guy has probably been around forever, so give him a good retirement package and find someone new who can talk without shouting.
Gawd those stock wheels r ugly as hell lol

Do you not live in an area with curvy roads? That car would be a dream here in the Appalachians...
