One thing to note that’s important is 07+ LGT/OBXT, 06+ FXT and 06+ WRX have D25 heads so if you put a RA shortblock in you are gonna bump up compression to around 8.7:1 and require a tune!
04-05 XT, 05-06 LGT/OBXT have B25 heads (same as STI) so no change in compression with RA block.
Still nothing for the 02-07 wrx 😢

I havent done an engine build on my own yet but I definetly plan on doing it ,My father was a master tech for a honda and toyota dealership and I have assisted him with a rebuild once before But after he passed I regret that I didnt learn more and didnt get to do a custom build with him. So all of your information and knowledge is very much appreciated. I have ownedan 08 wrx for 5 years that just blew and has been down for months, A shop quoted me 10,000 minimum to do the job I said bro thats alot of money. Besides that Im questioning if I even want to keep a subaru block in it because I really want a solid 600-750hp block that can handle it alll day long and i have been leaning towards 2jzge nat build or questioning doing another subaru block but didnt know what subaru block would be best,and smedia has all the right content to help me make the decision and learn more. I cant wait to see the 2jz build on your sti man!❤ what would you recommend for the new engine that can handle that easily?

When you say replace everything that has oil running through it would you recommend replacing the turbo? Currently helping my buddy fix his wrx with a spun rod bearing and we are kinda hoping we don’t have to replace the turbo. But also don’t want to run the risk of prematurely destroying the new block.

Forgot to mention there is different compression with different heads. Doesn’t compression go up with an RA block and D25 heads? That’s why CP and JE makes custom pistons for those heads specifically.

Do you use motul 10w40 even after break in? Right now I've done normal maintenance on my '15 STi (ie oil change, trans fluid change, brake job, tire rotation...) basic stuff. I do work at a Hyundai dealership and this is where i normally do my own work. But with oil changes I've been using Mobil 5W-30...should i swap to 10w40?
Tbh it depends. Most the time for the built cars I’ll use 20W50. Factory set ups 10w40. Nothing wrong with 5w30 for stock set ups
I had ringland failure on my 2020 sti. Caught it early. I tore it apart, cut open the filter, checked the oil, oil pan and there was no metal shavings. Not even a metal chunk. Hadn’t replace anything except the oil pump. Just bought new block from outfront. I’m Re using the oil pan, oil cooler.

Great list! One note, because I didn't hear it mentioned. 08 Forester XT does not have the factory oil cooler, similar to the WRX of the same year. I learned this recently when ordering parts for an external cooler.
I believe the MT do not have it and the autos may? I might be wrong in that one

Hi guys, if I want to learn building engine, where should I start? Should I enroll in a proper mechanic class or engine building course? I want to learn from the basics to advance and I am a totally beginner.
Tbh I’d buy a cheap project, take it apart and then put it back together. That’s how I’ve always learned 🙏
@@Smeedia I would love to do that. However, I don't know much about engine and its components. There are parts I don't know what it is called, and what it does. Apparently there is Google but that would be inefficient if I just keep having to stop along the way and search for the definition of that each part and end up knowing nothing because the learning process is not systematic. It is not like I know the basics, and then update the advance knowledge. I am completely noob now :(. Hence, I am looking for a good source to learn about the engine in overall first, then try what you suggest.

I have a 2017 WRX 2.0 FA motor. I was looking at doing the rebuild and getting the IAG 800 short. That's the power band I'm trying to go for.
But I was wondering can my current block handle that if I rebuilt everything inside of there or I just need a new block?

I just ordered a timing belt kit from Company23 and it was delivered without a water pump. This is because they caught a bad batch of pumps from Aisin, and are awaiting a new batch to come in. They apologized for the inconvenience but said it should be a couple week delay. I'd much rather be delayed and buy through Co23 than elsewhere and have that bad batch missed and installed.
love your work i just bought a subaru hawkeye 06 160hp 2.0 (non turbo) and i wanted to learn everything i need to make it strong just like the sti my mechanic told me i need axles brakes suspension and i think i will need a new differential too idk what to buy and their names e.t.c if you can please help me. I forget the year change, but with blue for everything is what we go by. If your draining the entire cooling system just snag blue

im not going for big numbers and none since i retired from building and racing cars a few years BUT i did drop some money on performance parts just for the added reliability... at least that what i told the wife 🤣
she been with me for a very long time(18 years), she was there when i was shopping for parts for my older builds and she said i had the same ol energy while i was shopping for the parts for the subie rebuild hahaha she doesnt know much about racing parts and stuff but she did raise an eyebrow while reading the list, she did recognize a few names and was like "gates racing, grimmspeed, aig, killer b, mishimoto, je custom pistons... none of this sound like stock parts "just to make the car run" 😂

Subaru Baja Turbo engine MT
Great video as always! I have a question for you. My 2016 WRX 2.0 L DOHC inter cooled turbo engine with 44,000 miles on it had a rod bearing failure and turbo failure with a lot of metal in the engine oil in October 2020. Luckily, this was under powertrain warranty. The Subaru Dealership, replaced the short block, turbo, oil feed lines, high-pressure line and oil pan at no cost. After replacing the new short block and turbo and reassembling the engine, the mechanic took it for a test drive and the check engine light came on P0011 a camshaft position timing over advanced bank 1. He removed the cover and inspected the pulleys and found all four pulleys still had debris from the rod bearing failure in them and needed to be replaced. They replaced all four pulleys and reassembled the engine again. Does Subaru of America have a service manual on how to replace a short block and turbo after Rod bearing failure that had a lot of metal in the engine oil and what parts need to be replaced? My engine failed again in October 2022, (Rod knock cylinder 4 ). I was wondering because the mechanic didn’t replace the four cam pulleys at the same time as the new short block and turbo. Could the debris from the cam pulleys get into the oil passages, oil galleries and heads and cause oil starvation and rod knock on cylinder 4 over time ?
