Regular Car Reviews: 2015 Subaru Impreza WRX

  • Subaru finally made a WRX that looks normal and I feel like an overcast day. Subaru was always weird and full of problems. In their faults, they had individuality. Now the WRX looks like a Camry with a hood scoup. I haven't masturbated in a while. I'm going to need to do a utility-jerk if I want to get work done.

      jo23bulls A few reasons. Subarus are great cars, and the whole brand depreciates slowly. The STi also has the "god" effect, much like the Supra. People think the car is a god so they are willing to pay big prices. The Supra isn't a good car in any technical aspect, but they are very expensive because lots of people drool over them.

    This review makes me feel sad for this car. It reminds me of those teenage to early twenties rock and metal bands that gained a large degree of popularity for being non conformist, then all of the members grow up and move on with their lives and float apart because of their adult obligations (families, jobs, mortgage, etc.). Eventually, their band is forgotten by society and even them. That is what Subaru has become. The non-conformist finally conforming to society to survive. It is a type of death that makes me wanna cry.

    A lot of people in the comments talking about how they would buy an older version of this car.....the problem with that is almost all of the used WRX cars are driven/owned by 22-23 y/o boy racer types and have had the shit beat out of them, that's the only reason I would consider buying a new one.

    It's always best to wait 1-2-years when Subaru launches a new WRX/STI. The styling always gets more aggressive as they continue to do face lifts on the body throughout the run. The most hilarious campaign was "the wing is back" rofl when they put the giant spoilers back on the STI.

    I have this exact model, the base, and honestly, I love it. sure, my fried has the 2016 sti, it has the rumble, but this basic look to me is what I love. I don't need looks to justify. peak torque at 3,600 rpm, 22 lbs of boost compared to my friend's sti of only 20. I got 100 mph when I get the chance, and when I do, I smile hard. This is daily driver, and compared to my old 2001 GS Lexus, and my parents rav4, it handles amazingly on the street. I have had horrible, soft suspension compared to the harsh and stiff wrx in Philadelphia. Honestly, yeah, uncomfortable, but the assurance of strong suspension without the fear of hitting the street, a great mileage for an awd performance car, very practical and a whole lot of fun when I can, I literally don't car about looks. My Lexus was nice, my mom's Porsche Cayenne is nice, and my car is plain, but experiencing the wrx is amazing. Reserved looks is like that one kid you thought was a douche or normal, but you find yourself in the bar at 12 in the morning having a good time one month and a half in during the spring semester. Sti is the same, and I can only hope for the new FB20 in 2020. It's bro culture living in the parents basement, but at least now it looks like your trying to find a job. Also, limited sti with wing delete=best fucking look.

    This car matured well, in that when it came out it was met with skepticism but upon its retirement in 2021 it is being loved, its final year a salsas success in the wake of COVID, the new model is being mocked in its lack of normalcy of design. I think the problem with the WRX (and to a greater extent, the STi), is that they're cars with so much grip and such decent traction-to-power-delivery that you can't really feel them getting lively anywhere near the speed limit. You have to be going harder than the limits of a public road.

    About the XM radio glitch: I noticed this right away on mine. The number of channels it skips depends on the last preset number you press. For example, if you press preset 5, then use steering control to go up, it will skip 5 channels. If you press preset 2, it will go up 2 channels when using steering control. You also don't have to turn the radio off to reset; you can cycle through the audio modes back to the XM and it will then skip by 1 again.

    Im surprised so many people dislike this model. I think it has a gruff utility vibe to it. I mean its got 4 doors and its AWD. It'll never be a ferrari, lets be real. I like to think of it as a sporty daily driver, not a sports car with daily driver characteristics. I like the new one a lot. Probably gonna pick one up in the next few weeks. That being said, some wider fenders from the factory, like the ones they had on the 2013 model, would work wonders on that car.

    For the dudebro who wants the classical Asian sports car, it's definitely underwhelming. The guy who focuses on performance, flash and heritage will be dissapointed. But for the guy who just wants to be low-key but maintain some sportiness and performance in his life, honestly the WRX isn't too bad.
    It's become tamed and simple, sure. But sometimes that's what people want. The WRX has become the that. The boring but humble sports car for the unflashy but humble car enthusiast.

    They are much more fun than he suggests in this video. The thing about Subaru is they are VERY easy to mod and many people make mods left and right for these cars. First thing everyone does is go Stage 1 usually with a Muffler delete... instantly the car comes alive. The stock tune sucks... 25% throttle feels like 100% and then dies off quickly. The manual version feels much faster even though you don't hold boost unless you flat foot shift... I don't.... but the Cobb AP lets you use that option if you want. Just a few little mods wakes this car up. The few good mods are intake, BOV, sway bars...rear for sure...exhaust... Charge pipe... you've instantly gained some more HP and just get a pro-tune and you are literally in a different car. Drop in some coil overs.... This is why they are good cars. Everyone usually hates on the looks until the next few gens, then they go... remember the 2015, it's pretty cool isn't it. I remember the 2009 and hating it when it first came out then it got cool and people loved it. I get people loved the 2005, that was a great STI year but the regular Impreza wasn't that great... I had one. Wheel bearing went out twice and we had less than 150K on it. It also needed some rear emissions thing but was too expensive to fix at the time and the CEL was always on.... which kills the cruise control. That sucked.... The car was only good for about 50K miles. It didn't feel "new" after that time but the WRX is a different beast. I have 17K miles on my WRX and it still has that new feeling to it. About to put more mods actually on the car... the ones I described that I have not actually put on are the BOV, downpipe, charge pipe and turbo inlet hose. The down pipe requires a stage 2 tune so I'm waiting on the installation of the other mods first.

    You can blame regulation, but I think that's cheating. Calling out to the nebulous power known as 'government' for ruining your fun.
    What I think we are seeing with modern cars is mass pandering and that is what Subaru is guilty of here. This idea that you have to conform to what people like to sell well and that's good for moving units, but bad for image. It makes your cars forgettable and boring (Saturn, Pontiac, and Saab in 2007). Subaru as a company does have the money and resources to build something edgy that very few want to buy but everyone wishes they could drive, they just don't because it's easier not to, hell, most companies are operating this way with very little exception.
    One of the limited exceptions in the realm of "regular cars" comes to mind- the Alfa 4c: it's uncomfortable, poorly equipped, and expensive for what it is, but even at a car show in Eastern Washington there is a red rope around it as kids, women in their 20's, men in their 60's, and I look at it and drink in it's curves. It's sex, it's excitement, it's the promise of thrills that only the Italians can seem to generate. The industry needs to learn how to be seductive again, and yes, the blob-eye and hawkeye were seductive machines in their days and I firmly believe that they can do it again.

    • @smugmode

    • @dafiltafish

      False Steel
      Yes. I do believe I said that.
      I'm trying to say Subaru should make something the majority of people lust over and want but for one reason or another they can't have... think Ecoboost GT, Challenger Hellcat, NSX hybrid, Nissan GT-R... all cars that strike a chord in the collective consciousness and yet not just any mere mortal can physically touch much less drive. The kind of car that will steal a major international auto-show and break necks in traffic.

      They are seeing increased sales, especially since they have some of the cheapest, safest, and most reliable AWD cars out there.
      The 4th gen Impreza has been a big seller in my area for that reason. It might have a cheap plastic interior, basic FM radio/CD player and shitty handsfree system, but it's reliable and sticks to the road, especially when pickups and SUVs flip and cars get stuck.

    1.the sti has a huge wing and a 6speed, 2. The reason it sounds like that is because they changed the exhaust manifold so it wouldn't have as much lag, what I mean is picture a boxer engine, well the left manifold has to be longer than the right because it's the furthest away, so the reason you would hear that great boxer engine rumble is because you have different exhaust pulses that you hear, and mean you would would have to have more psi to spool the turbo evenly. That's the best I can explain it on here but correct me if I'm wrong, I mean of course it depends on the firing order and more but that's the main,

    Dealerships costs convinced me of the need to change my 2009 VW GTI. I decided to get a new car for less than $30,000.00. I bought the 2015 Subaru WRX Premium, and I am very happy with the decision so far (all other options had plastic in the interior and black color). I will see how the Subaru dealerships end up being in the end. So far the car is more fun to drive than the VW GTI, to my taste (it feels more powerful, sharp, and it gets better MPG), but I recognize that my wife says that there are cabin noises that she doesn't like (that were not present in the previous car). The sound system could also be better, and the manual transmission maybe gentler. Before the GTI, I had an '95 M3 which I also used to commute to work, and the clutch was way less aggressive. If you want to offer pleasant drive to the passengers you have to pay more attention then on other cars. When you try to enjoy it, the car pleases you immediately.

    • @quintessenceSL
      @quintessenceSL 9 лет назад +3

      It's less that it's lackluster (for the money, it still has great performance) as much as Subaru is attempting, with varying degrees of success to move from a niche manufacturer into an established manufacturer, much like how Honda moved from quirky manufacturer of cheap, durable cars, with some oddities here and there, to a manufacturing behemoth covering nearly aspect of the market. Subaru is stuck in that awkward middle period.
      Engineering wise, they still have the same fundamentals (luckily), they are just forgetting that the cars that moved them into the public consciousness were, well, different. Not all of them succeeded in the market, but they sure didn't get mistaken for anything other than Subarus.
      Now nearly everyone has AWD, even Chevy can make a cheap dependable car that's easy to service, and even Citroen has rally cred now. And even Subaru has abandoned AWD as scripture.
      Judging from history, their next move will be to go upscale, where black plastic will be replaced with better hidden black plastic. I just hope they keep pushing what's possible at the lower end of the market instead of being swept up in the profit margins of the luxury vehicles, with the base models as little more than an afterthought.
      And at the lower end of the market, Subarus absolutely shine.

      What happened? Subaru pulled out of the World Rally Championship and no longer had a reason to make goofy cars.

      yea it is. wrx is an impreza trim, or atleast thats how it started

    One of the benefits of modifying cars like the WRX, is improving the shortcomings of the manufacturer. Not many get a WRX and keep it stock. Like the Honda Civic, Subaru has a plethora of aftermarket features to really make it Stand Out.

    I thought the 2015 WRX was just dubbed as the WRX and no longer had "Impreza" in it. Not trying to be nit picky, even though I probably am.

      It's still an Impreza to me. As it's still based on it

      You're right. Subaru formally separated Impreza and WRX/STi.

      He is trolling the idiots who think their 2015 wrx isn't an impreza.

    • @ddremoboyable

      Actually the only shared component between the WRX and the Impreza is the chassis. Not a single body panel, nor mechanical bit is shared between the two. Just a few interior trim pieces match. That is why this year's build quality is superior to any WRX/STi of previous years. So Zakary is correct. It is no longer the Subaru Impreza WRX, it is the Subaru WRX.

    Sometimes I come back to this video to listen to the intro for how the interior is "black and plastic". Gets me every time.

    Dude, you can drive more like a hooligan in an invisible car. It's perfect -- you wanna fly under the cop's radar. The more "ordinary" the better, with a car like this.
    Also, were those snow tires on the car?

    • @AshleyTogepi
      @AshleyTogepi 5 лет назад +1

      I thought that was always kind of the idea of the wrx. Like, with the STi, that big-ass wing is draws so much attention, but a black or red wrx makes a great sleeper. That's why they used a 2006 wrx for the intro scene in Baby Driver. Unless it's got gold rims, or you know what to look for, the wrx does a pretty good job of blending in, and the new ones exemplify that.

    • @Ziegfried82
      @Ziegfried82 5 лет назад

      @@AshleyTogepi yeah the STI is more for the track oriented drivers imo. The STI costs quite a bit more and doesn't really deliver much more horsepower now 268 vs 305...so all the extra money is going into improved brakes, suspension, drive modes, differential adjustment etc some hardcore stuff that you won't be using in regular street driving. Also the STI's ancient engine design gets terrible mpg and it has a small gas tank so road trips will be painful. Personally I went with the regular 2018 WRX it's fun as hell all year round...snow tires make it amazing during winters in the frozen north. Mine's gray metallic, I have fun with it and no tickets so far (knock on wood!).

    this guy is spot on. His analytical jokes are hilarious. This car is just too plain now. Judging by the looks, Subaru decided that the vast majority of their consumers were families looking for a relatively fast sedan. Even the STi lacks thrill

    I think the comments here prove a point. Every car looks like every other car now. No two people who compared the looks of this car said the same thing. There's literally no difference in shape apart from a vent over here or a crease over there.
