jo23bulls A few reasons. Subarus are great cars, and the whole brand depreciates slowly. The STi also has the "god" effect, much like the Supra. People think the car is a god so they are willing to pay big prices. The Supra isn't a good car in any technical aspect, but they are very expensive because lots of people drool over them.
A lot of people in the comments talking about how they would buy an older version of this car.....the problem with that is almost all of the used WRX cars are driven/owned by 22-23 y/o boy racer types and have had the shit beat out of them, that's the only reason I would consider buying a new one.
I bought a second hand legacy twin turbo with 228k's was a risk on my part but for 3.5k i took the plunge. I've had it for half a year now only mechanical issue has been a worn out clutch apart from that it's mint.

This review makes me feel sad for this car. It reminds me of those teenage to early twenties rock and metal bands that gained a large degree of popularity for being non conformist, then all of the members grow up and move on with their lives and float apart because of their adult obligations (families, jobs, mortgage, etc.). Eventually, their band is forgotten by society and even them. That is what Subaru has become. The non-conformist finally conforming to society to survive. It is a type of death that makes me wanna cry.
I think it's more like those even sadder 90s rock bands you wish had broken up while they still had some dignity left. The Evo and WRX are like the Green Day and Weezer of cars.

I don't need looks to justify. peak torque at 3,600 rpm, 22 lbs of boost compared to my friend's sti of only 20. I got 100 mph when I get the chance, and when I do, I smile hard. This is daily driver, and compared to my old 2001 GS Lexus, and my parents rav4, it handles amazingly on the street. I have had horrible, soft suspension compared to the harsh and stiff wrx in Philadelphia. Honestly, yeah, uncomfortable, but the assurance of strong suspension without the fear of hitting the street, a great mileage for an awd performance car, very practical and a whole lot of fun when I can, I literally don't car about looks. My Lexus was nice, my mom's Porsche Cayenne is nice, and my car is plain, but experiencing the wrx is amazing. LandThisShot I like them all too. Some people look at cars with rose tinted glasses. Current performance cars are better then they were 10 years ago. This car matured well, in that when it came out it was met with skepticism but upon its retirement in 2021 it is being loved, its final year a salsas success in the wake of COVID, the new model is being mocked in its lack of normalcy of design. Driving the VA wrx platform in 2021 feels like driving a car from 2005 with a warranty, for good and bad. This was a great review of the car in its time.

About the XM radio glitch: I noticed this right away on mine. The number of channels it skips depends on the last preset number you press. For example, if you press preset 5, then use steering control to go up, it will skip 5 channels. If you press preset 2, it will go up 2 channels when using steering control. You also don't have to turn the radio off to reset; you can cycle through the audio modes back to the XM and it will then skip by 1 again.

Glad you mentioned the side skirts, a friend has this exact same car; color, trim, etc, and I chide him about the "running boards". It's hard to not knock your feet into them getting in or out, so get used to buffing scuffs out of them.
I think the problem with the WRX (and to a greater extent, the STi), is that they're cars with so much grip and such decent traction-to-power-delivery that you can't really feel them getting lively anywhere near the speed limit. You have to be going harder than the limits of a public road.
The big spoiler comes with the STi I believe. Also, the problem with this particular car is the color, white isn't it's color. Subaru wanted to make the WRX a sedan instead of a hatchback. I rarely disagree with you, but I am here.
JK Productions One could not exist properly without the other. They needed someone to compete with to keep them going. Now that the Evo is gone the WRX will slowly fade into the black and white boring world that is Corollas, Accords, and Altimas. Its like what does a Superhero do without a villain to motivate him, he slowly degrades back into conformity because there is nothing left for him to do. RIP you two rally gods...
Thanks so much for this review. Stole the words I wished I could think of right out of my mouth. Although I'm not always hip on your reviews you certainly nailed this one. As a multiple Subaru owner. I can honestly say the best thing I ever did was move on. Other car companies make just as quick and much much better interiors now. Makes me very sad to cling to Subaru trying to pull it in a different direction as I watch it walk right off towards an inexplicable doom. Pass on Subaru for now...
They are much more fun than he suggests in this video. The thing about Subaru is they are VERY easy to mod and many people make mods left and right for these cars. First thing everyone does is go Stage 1 usually with a Muffler delete... instantly the car comes alive. The stock tune sucks... 25% throttle feels like 100% and then dies off quickly. The manual version feels much faster even though you don't hold boost unless you flat foot shift... I don't.... but the Cobb AP lets you use that option if you want. Just a few little mods wakes this car up. The few good mods are intake, BOV, sway bars...rear for sure...exhaust... Charge pipe... you've instantly gained some more HP and just get a pro-tune and you are literally in a different car. Drop in some coil overs.... This is why they are good cars. Everyone usually hates on the looks until the next few gens, then they go... remember the 2015, it's pretty cool isn't it. I remember the 2009 and hating it when it first came out then it got cool and people loved it. I get people loved the 2005, that was a great STI year but the regular Impreza wasn't that great... I had one. Wheel bearing went out twice and we had less than 150K on it. It also needed some rear emissions thing but was too expensive to fix at the time and the CEL was always on.... which kills the cruise control. That sucked.... The car was only good for about 50K miles. It didn't feel "new" after that time but the WRX is a different beast. I have 17K miles on my WRX and it still has that new feeling to it. About to put more mods actually on the car... the ones I described that I have not actually put on are the BOV, downpipe, charge pipe and turbo inlet hose. The down pipe requires a stage 2 tune so I'm waiting on the installation of the other mods first.
holy shit! I came across this video because I was thinking about buying this car. I'm a bit ashamed to say it, but your review matches me perfectly. Everything you described is exactly what I'm looking for in a car.
thank you so much for expressing what i have been trying to express about how the design of the new subbies and how they look like some average american car, in my opinion, they ruined the whole design, and i always get shitted on for expressing this opinion XD
Eh, I am absolutely in love with the purported mechanicals of the Focus RS, but the design... So it's last call, you see the WRX and the RS looking sheepishly around from the far corner...
They likely had to raise the hood line to meet pedestrian non-killing standards, which eliminated one of the big benefits of the boxer engine. The best Impreza is still the first Impreza
Saying the STI package gets you new side mirrors is definitely not accurate. You actually get a 2.5 liter making 305 hp vs 2.0 with 268, a six speed manual, upgraded suspension, hydraulic steering and more.
Im surprised so many people dislike this model. I think it has a gruff utility vibe to it. I mean its got 4 doors and its AWD. It'll never be a ferrari, lets be real. I like to think of it as a sporty daily driver, not a sports car with daily driver characteristics. I like the new one a lot. Probably gonna pick one up in the next few weeks. That being said, some wider fenders from the factory, like the ones they had on the 2013 model, would work wonders on that car.
The whole WRX/STi series is becoming a grocery getter, rather than a teenagers car. Subaru is maturing and thanks to new laws and regulations. Subaru is having to be tamed by the government :(
***** The WRX isn't getting slower, it's just that the cars around it have improved at a much faster rate than the once mighty Impreza WRX. Like back in the mid 90s an STi wasn't far off the pace of a base 911 whereas nowadays a Golf GTI is as close to the WRX as it once was to the Carrera.
Thank you Gargenville, that does help put things into prospective. I just think Subaru is just too much of a family car company. The STi from the 90's all the way up to 2008 had an aggressive look that was promising. Its just that I do like the 2004 STi and the 2015 STi.
Last tuesday, someone at my school said to me, the exact thing that was said to you. Word for word. He's never seen this channel, I'm sure of it. That video was actually in a way inspiring. It also let me see the even if people are complete morons now, you can have success when you're older. I have a car related RUclips channel, that isn't doing well, and this video just kept me from giving up on it. Thank you Mr. Regular.
'15 owner here. I completely agree with this review. The car is not much of a looker, but for those that know what this car REALLY is it is. For me it's the appreciation of the engineering.
SUBARUUUUUU IMPOSSIBRUUUUU. On a more serious note: What person decided it was a good idea to not have the massive rear wing when they bought the car? Or, more to the point, what person decided it was a good idea to make the massive rear wing an optional extra on the WRX at the dealership?! EDIT: Apparantly the wing never came on the WRX, only the STi :/ Lame... Imprezas looks so much cooler in STi form :/
2015: the year the WRX figured out how to be normal. Meanwhile the STI was still gauging its ears and giving the finger to elderly couples that scowled at it for loitering in front of your local 7-11.
The sound bit came from incorporating a relatively simple mod that people did to previous generations: Equal Length Headers. Besides removing the 'Subie Rumble' , it also improves power overall just a little bit.
You can blame regulation, but I think that's cheating. Calling out to the nebulous power known as 'government' for ruining your fun. What I think we are seeing with modern cars is mass pandering and that is what Subaru is guilty of here. This idea that you have to conform to what people like to sell well and that's good for moving units, but bad for image. It makes your cars forgettable and boring (Saturn, Pontiac, and Saab in 2007). Subaru as a company does have the money and resources to build something edgy that very few want to buy but everyone wishes they could drive, they just don't because it's easier not to, hell, most companies are operating this way with very little exception. One of the limited exceptions in the realm of "regular cars" comes to mind- the Alfa 4c: it's uncomfortable, poorly equipped, and expensive for what it is, but even at a car show in Eastern Washington there is a red rope around it as kids, women in their 20's, men in their 60's, and I look at it and drink in it's curves. It's sex, it's excitement, it's the promise of thrills that only the Italians can seem to generate. The industry needs to learn how to be seductive again, and yes, the blob-eye and hawkeye were seductive machines in their days and I firmly believe that they can do it again.
False Steel Yes. I do believe I said that. I'm trying to say Subaru should make something the majority of people lust over and want but for one reason or another they can't have... think Ecoboost GT, Challenger Hellcat, NSX hybrid, Nissan GT-R... all cars that strike a chord in the collective consciousness and yet not just any mere mortal can physically touch much less drive. The kind of car that will steal a major international auto-show and break necks in traffic.
They are seeing increased sales, especially since they have some of the cheapest, safest, and most reliable AWD cars out there. The 4th gen Impreza has been a big seller in my area for that reason. It might have a cheap plastic interior, basic FM radio/CD player and shitty handsfree system, but it's reliable and sticks to the road, especially when pickups and SUVs flip and cars get stuck.
I miss my 2002 blue WRX. Bless your crazy, sad, groping in the wilderness, just woke from a mescaline trip reviews. No other way to express this strange one way ticket journey we are all on.
I have owned a 2013 wrx and currently own a 2015 wrx and they are absolutely wonderful cars. Faster than most everything on the road under 30 grand and it handles incredibly....even better than my 2013. Testing the limits of the car on public roads is not for the faint of heart.
+Siggy Cloud do you know what jdm means? I'm assuming you do... Americans always want the jdm Subaru sti but have to settle for an American dumbed down version....
As an owner of the older model WRX I really don't like the newer ones. They're trying to conform too much, loosing their identity in the proces. It's just a regular car now, nothing special.
***** Did I ever say that? Even if you think so the older WRXs are plenty safe and have plenty performance, so ofcourse looks are the definitive factor when it comes down to old vs newer models then. Luxury and mpg are mood when buying performance cars anyways, or atleast should be waaaay down the list. If you want a nice interior and mpg buy a Honda accord or sommething...
Actually the only shared component between the WRX and the Impreza is the chassis. Not a single body panel, nor mechanical bit is shared between the two. Just a few interior trim pieces match. That is why this year's build quality is superior to any WRX/STi of previous years. So Zakary is correct. It is no longer the Subaru Impreza WRX, it is the Subaru WRX.
In fairness, the STi does give you 40 more horsepower and 30 more tourques for your extra $7k, along with all the extra bullshit that nobody buying an STi cares about.
The quality of the $7k options is pretty terrible aside from the roof rails. The head unit, upgraded speakers, and interior options are about as bad as the base trim. If the only issue is cost it is better to install good aftermarket options and save yourself a few thousand dollars and complaints.
I wish it depreciated like a normal car. Why the hell are 10 year old STIs with 120k on the clock still 20 grand??
Because the new ones look like this.
jo23bulls A few reasons. Subarus are great cars, and the whole brand depreciates slowly. The STi also has the "god" effect, much like the Supra. Glad you mentioned the side skirts, a friend has this exact same car; color, trim, etc, and I chide him about the "running boards". It's hard to not knock your feet into them getting in or out, so get used to buffing scuffs out of them.
Yeah I rub my feet on them constantly
+Maindrian Pace yeah it is kind of annoying. and the darker the color of the car the more you can tell... like my galaxy blue pearl :|
I don't get it, I have no difficulty not doing it to mine.
I think the problem with the WRX (and to a greater extent, the STi), is that they're cars with so much grip and such decent traction-to-power-delivery that you can't really feel them getting lively anywhere near the speed limit. You have to be going harder than the limits of a public road.
I watch this video regularly, but only for the intro. I have watched it so many times over the years and it still pleases me
when you do the STI version, Please Bring back Subaru Impossibru
I'm a 2012 WRX owner and I thoroughly enjoyed this review!
Have one as a first car. I do lean towards the older designs, however, she isn't a bad looking car. Quite a fun machine too.
This is the type of review the public deserves. Subbed.
The big spoiler comes with the STi I believe. Also, the problem with this particular car is the color, white isn't it's color.
Subaru wanted to make the WRX a sedan instead of a hatchback. I rarely disagree with you, but I am here.
I just name-dropped RCR to Subaru of America as an influence on my purchase. Pic to prove it, Mr. RCR.
And with the death of the evo the wrx is just going to assimilate into all other cars even more and become more boring
its a very sad thing .
Rip Evo, gonna keep my evo 9 for a looong time
JK Productions One could not exist properly without the other.
I don't buy that though. With cars like the Golf R and the Focus RS it's going to have to get better to keep up.
redjaredits Thats the new generation that will take over. The STi and Evo will become legends in the car hall of fame.
Love the the car reviews I have been watching them for almost as long as you have been posting the. DONT STOP REVIEWING CARS!!!!!!
Death Cab for Cutie at the beginning
Trans-imprezza-ism
What song is he playing on the guitar tho
Tom Haynes “Transatlanticism” the Title Track. First thing i noticed haha!!
I honestly thought I was the only one who (for simplified explanation) didn't like the newer WRXs! This makes me honestly happy.
If I could pick one song to represent the last 25 years of automotives, it would be "What happened to all the fun in the world?"
"august and everything after". dropping old school music references like a BOSS.
That "Pick It Up" at the beginning killed me....

I'm not even a WRX fan and this saddens me.
Great vid as always, I totally relate to the middle school comment!

3:42 guy in the mirror scared the living crap out of me xD
Looks like Arrow.
Assassins creed
holy shit! I came across this video because I was thinking about buying this car. I'm a bit ashamed to say it, but your review matches me perfectly. Everything you described is exactly what I'm looking for in a car.
Subaru also killed the WRX liftback too...bad move.
Nick B they had a liftback?
I love your colorful commentary and opinion of cars.
thank you so much for expressing what i have been trying to express about how the design of the new subbies and how they look like some average american car, in my opinion, they ruined the whole design, and i always get shitted on for expressing this opinion XD
Did you like the concept?
SS8styles yeah, i wish they would of kept a little bit more of the design from the last gen subarus, but i liked the concept one.
Martin Espinoza
They could've just fitted a popup system, even the 2016 Miata has one so it's not like they're very heavy or expensive.
Wow well captured! The wrx/sti are all grown up
Agreed there not a loud obnoxious box anymore
And if anyone wants a loud car, they can get an aftermarket exhaust for 1-2,000
Black plastic interiors - makes you feel like you're driving around inside a wheelie bin
I love how you ended up saying the kid's name at the end as a kind of last-minute insult lol
1:15 “that really strikes Accord”
The STi comes with the 2.5L that most people love. Including myself.
You should review the Space Shuttle.
Loving the subtle SVX in the parking lot
The whole WRX/STi series is becoming a grocery getter, rather than a teenagers car. Subaru is maturing and thanks to new laws and regulations. Subaru is having to be tamed by the government :(
***** No one on here realizes what the car is underneath the corolla-like exterior.
*****
The WRX isn't getting slower, it's just that the cars around it have improved at a much faster rate than the once mighty Impreza WRX.
Guys guys.. That's because it is based off a family car. Besides you can get such a better car for 30k.
***** The WRX has its own chassis this year. Try again. It is a competition bred rally car.
Regular.
4:00am on a monday here I am
WRX never came with the huge wing, that was always on the STi (one step up)
Andrew Saturn Damn, that's kinda lame to be honest :(
Mythbuster WRXs did come with a smaller wing.
Milesamanjaro it was more of a lip than a wing, and that is still an option on the 2015/2016 WRX
Andrew Saturn Im looking at my 05 WRX, it's definitely wing like. That did go away in the later years for a lip though.
TRANSATLANTICISM!!!! This made me love RCR even more.
They killed my dream car
+asdfawesomesauce bahhh ha ha heeee!
+asdfawesomesauce i still got the hope that some day i'll get the 2004 sti... but other than that you're right man i'm pretty depressed. :(
marfa :D
Hey i have drive one of this wrx sti and its was much faster and have spoiler so dont lisen to this shitt they lie..
Underrated intro and outtro by Roman.
Moving units is what companies do. Pandering to the market gets them there.
False Steel
Yes.
2015 WRX isn't an Impreza anymore. But can you review the 08-14 WRX/STi? :D
I have owned a 2013 wrx and currently own a 2015 wrx and they are absolutely wonderful cars. Faster than most everything on the road under 30 grand and it handles incredibly....even better than my 2013. Testing the limits of the car on public roads is not for the faint of heart.
no more SUBARUUU IMPOSSIBRUUUU.
:'(
Sometimes I come back to this video to listen to the intro for how the interior is "black and plastic". Gets me every time.
Well done america, you have killed the WRX
Subaru is made in Japan
Watching RUclips No shit, really?
Do you not think it was perhaps MADE with other countries -cough cough- US -cough cough- in mind?
+Siggy Cloud nope. Jdm bro
Watching RUclips I can't tell if you're trolling me or being serious.
IF you're being serious then you are a fucking moron.
+Siggy Cloud do you know what jdm means? I'm assuming you do...
Americans always want the jdm Subaru sti but have to settle for an American dumbed down version....
The original WRX body design, but without the bin-liner interior would be the perfect WRX.
THAT is an Impreza WRX? Wow... what happened?
The STI looks way better
What happened? Subaru pulled out of the World Rally Championship and no longer had a reason to make goofy cars.
William Furniss lame...
It. Is. Not. AN. Impreza.
yea it is. wrx is an impreza trim, or atleast thats how it started
At first I thought this was bullshit, but then I kept watching and he's dropping some major truth bombs.
can i have the full version of the intro techno BLACK N PLASTIC?
Ahhhh just another classic RCR...so statisfying
As an owner of the older model WRX I really don't like the newer ones. They're trying to conform too much, loosing their identity in the proces. It's just a regular car now, nothing special.
*****
Did I ever say that?
Even if you think so the older WRXs are plenty safe and have plenty performance, so ofcourse looks are the definitive factor when it comes down to old vs newer models then. Luxury and mpg are mood when buying performance cars anyways, or atleast should be waaaay down the list. If you want a nice interior and mpg buy a Honda accord or sommething...
Well, today I learned that we had a similar childhood, Mr.Regular. I'm glad you never started acting "normal".
It does have the big wing, and it looks awesome, nothing like a corolla.
This is just not the right car.
Thank you. Best review ever! Even better than your previous Subaru reviews. Yes!!!!
Just look how sad that car's face looks. Even the car feels depressed about how incredibly average it looks.
The only thing to make u smile on a Monday is Regular Cars.
I thought the 2015 WRX was just dubbed as the WRX and no longer had "Impreza" in it. Not trying to be nit picky, even though I probably am.
I was going to say that too, but I didn't want to seem like a dick.
It's still an Impreza to me. As it's still based on it
You're right. Subaru formally separated Impreza and WRX/STi.
He is trolling the idiots who think their 2015 wrx isn't an impreza.
The best review ever of a modern subaru.
This thing looks better when it's an STI with the wing/gold rims and blue paint
Your song choice is always so god damn good
In fairness, the STi does give you 40 more horsepower and 30 more tourques for your extra $7k, along with all the extra bullshit that nobody buying an STi cares about.
Like the rumble since its has an ej25
Or go cobb accessport with a WRX for $600 and gain more power than a stock STi.
Sorry, but what is "tourques?"
A Spanish dish perhaps?
The quality of the $7k options is pretty terrible aside from the roof rails. The head unit, upgraded speakers, and interior options are about as bad as the base trim. If the only issue is cost it is better to install good aftermarket options and save yourself a few thousand dollars and complaints.
It comes with the 6 speed gearbox which doesn't explode if you abuse it, that's gotta be worth a good amount of the difference in price alone.
OMFG it's Death Cab! I love you guys! Closet video game and good music fan! Subbed just for that
