- We finally have a long awaited update on what happened to my 2014 Silverado. As many of you have been following along, we deleted the Active Fuel Management (AFM) from 5.3L motor. Since finishing up the install earlier this year, we have not added finished the series and in this video we explain why.

Appreciate the real story on this. Helps us shade tree mechanics know we're not the only ones who experience the unexpected and challenging-to-diagnose issues, even when we follow exactly what someone else has done successfully with ease. Apparently Murphy likes to haunt mechanics, too.
Looking forward to your further dive into this and to see how you finally get it working as planned.
You are definitely not alone! Happens to the best of us for sure.
I rebuilt a jeep (chrysler) powertech 4.7 and when I first start it didnt want to start unless I floored the gas, first thought was engine was flooding and flooring it would cut injectors off. It would seem to run a little better at hi rpm but at low or idle it would backfire and shut off. Only codes were for misfiring short on ignition coils, inspected harness extensive and didn't find anything. After 2 weeks of troubleshooting found right cam timing chain was off by 1 tooth. Weird because I could have bet anything that my timing marks were good, I cheked it twice and rotated assembly like 16 times just to make sure no interference. It really sucks after so much work it doesn't come out as planned and the heart drops for a second. Lucky for me it was just that and nothing serious.
Did you ever do a update video
Good job 👍 definitely could be the head since it was preassembled. After eliminate that would leave a failed lifter. Wow. I think your series is great.
Glad you have been enjoying it!
J- C man spit it out don’t waist a whole video rehashing what we already know!
Glad you're getting to the bottom of it!
Thanks buddy!
I did an afm delete on mine with a tuner. I left the afm lifters and cam in the engine. It's been running smooth with a little lifter noise on cold startup that goes away after a minute. LS7 lifters are known to be noisy if that's what you used. Sounds like you got a few bad ones.
Thanks for the tips! Tuners do work well and probably add some longevity to the lifters. We figured out the issue since shooting this video and will have an update soon
that's not a delete but a disable
Very true, and they do not prevent the failure. The lifters can and may still fail
@@TheSundaeDrive Since the locking pin on the afm lifters is never depressed by high pressure oil, the failure of a collapsed afm lifter is avoided. Normal lifter failure is still possible, as it is with any LS engine.
Should help them last longer for sure!
Thanks for the update, I finished my L86 back in March with a lot of help from your videos. I did mine almost exactly as you part wise with no issues, noticeable power gains and around 20k miles on it as of now. Still uses oil unfortunately.
Glad the video series helped you out!
You check the camshaft bearings
U need the deflector in your oil pan to get rid of the oil consumption
Getting ready to do this exact job starting this weekend ! Would be nice to see the update on what the noise was soon
It will be up soon! Shoot me a message to cliff@thesundaedrive.com and I can tell you some things to check before you start.
Came for Cliff's beard, left satisfied.
Mine is in the gm shop now after doing the delete and mine is the same. Looking forward to find the issue. My bcm quit doing mine and all the electrical went crazy. So it’s been a fun one.
Oh man that stinks :( definitely let me know what it ends up being!
Any update on yours. Can’t find the issue with mine they have up on trying to find it. What tune do I need to run on it. Other than deleting the dod/afm in the computer.
We just posted the video this morning 👍 goes through my issue
Just watched it. That won’t be my issue unfortunately. Mine is show it’s 29 degrees out both direction and can’t find why.
@@thexorcist214 that's a real bummer :( timing chain jump?
like to see before and after results with the 6.2 intake! tks for sharing!
Absolutely! I'm looking forward to it too
I’ve had to rebuild my entire engine after the afm destroyed two rod bearings. I bought it this way. Figured it would be an easy delete and done. Going back in with a deleted 5.3 can I just use a Range delete thing to bypass having to drive all the way to have it hp tuned. I know there is something about keeping the solenoid plugged it but tucked away. But is this a work around the hassle of finding a shop to hp tune the pcm?
When the engine was put in did any body prime the oil system or before turning the engine over or starting? That had been my experience that you have to do with crank mounted oil pumps. I have tried before what GM, Ford, and Dodge said after engine installs and I have had the same results with the engine sounds. I changed the way of priming the oil system to force priming with using a pump and had great results ever since.
I hope that you get it fixed soon
Thanks! We figured out the issue since shooting this - next video will go over what we found!
@@TheSundaeDrive Looking forward to seeing the next video.
Also put engine at dtc and make sure cylinder one is there. 5.3 have been known to shear the timing pin off for the cam gear.
Definetely make sure it is there at dtc
@@TheSundaeDrive 🤣🤣🤣 tdc cylinder 1.
@@wayneparker4922 rofl 😂 yes tdc 😏 glad you caught on hahaha
I have heard that sound before. It almost sounds like an oil pressure problem. Your lifters are not getting enough pressure to pump up properly. Is it possible that in assembly a gasket material, ie, a permatex type of product has covered over an oil passage some where, or been sucked in to a port?Has the oil pan changed for some reason ? Or is it dented in ? I have seen the inlet sump pump screen to close to the bottom of the pan restrict oil flow and starve the engine. Good luck. I will follow to see the out come.
Ernie
Thanks for the tips! We did find the issue and will be posting the video up soon. Those are definitely good things to check.
Did an afm/dod delete on my 09 and I feel like I hear a clicking. Been driving it for about 1000 miles now. I've ran it up to 6400rpm without am issue also so I don't know. Waiting on the weather to warm up so I can clear my garage and break it back down.
Hopefully it is a normal click and nothing wrong! Double check that your rockers are fully seated.
Did you ever figure out what was wrong? My truck is making the same sounds
We did. Following video goes through the issue
What valve springs came on your new heads? if they're a factory GM spring, there was a run of springs coming from GM that has been bad and failing on engines (some as soon as 50 miles) or so of driving, including springs on new LT2 engines in the C8 corvettes. might be worth looking into if they're a GM factory spring. i just got a set of LT1 springs myself for my heads and need to see if i can find the manufacture date
Man....at first I thought you did a diesel swap. That sounded so bad on startup.....
Exactly what I thought too 🤷🏼♂️😅
@@TheSundaeDrive I used to have an s10 that sounded like a diesel. The Engine failed 200 miles later xD that is ok though, I dont like those trucks.
Picking up my block from the machine shop today. Its my first full build and am curious what you guys found?
Next video will be out soon and we will fill you guys in!
I have done this exact build on a gen 3 in the Envoy package. New motor started right away. Nice right? yeah oil pressure 40 lbs at startup Nice. Engine warming Nice. Lifters started rattling after 4-5 mins running as we warmed and attempted break in. Noticing a new idling running oil pressure of about 5! #@$* ?. I've begun my own investigation and am looking into oiling system and additional passages that may need to be restricted or blocked. very interested in what your doing .
Your oil pump may not be seated correctly :( did you use the oil pump alignment tools? I hope you have it figured out!
Hey I was wondering if you guys can give me a little bit of help I did exactly the same thing you guys did but I did not change the hits and it's making the exact same noise as your the one you did everything's brand new including the oil pump
i am working on 2014 chevy silverado 4.3l . valve lifter was collaped on number one cylinder ,i change all lifter send the head to machine shop . now car does not make noise ,but number 3 rocker arm not moving . number 3 cylinder has a high valve lifter which is afm valve lifter
Hey I have a question my dad recently got the engine rebuilt on a 2007 suburban 5.3 and got an afm delete and when the engine was installed it made this exact noise and didn’t want to run and didn’t have much power and makes this horrible noise when you put some gas keep in mind this all happened today. The mechanic said that we needed to get the truck reprogrammed Bc the motor wasn’t going to run right without it is this true?
The engine must be tuned. You shouldn't run it without a tune. I'm not sure what sounds it will make but try the tune first.
Can you guys do a disassembly video of the cowl section of the 2014-18 Silverado 1500?
We can try to that sometime. Have a lot of videos to catch up on tho lol
Mine does EXACT same thing.. I did everything by the book all new parts and seals and new oil pump. Did you figure it out???
What's the gas mileage after the delete ?
What tuners did you use and what happens if you don’t tune out the AFM w when you delete the system
Welcome back & congrats !
Thanks!! Lots more updates on the truck coming soon
I vote lifters.
@@vongillman I'll have an update in a few days. We found the issue. I'll let you know if you are right 👍
I’m a old diesel guy... I was going to say injectors....but watch the engine not shake at idle , I’m guessing lifters...oil pressure? Lol
We don't want to spoil the next video but both good thoughts!
I just had a professional and reputable local shop do an AFM D w/ oil pump on my 2014 Silverado (with 55k miles) and have the same noise. After, warmup the noise goes away but I noticed when while I pulled a load the noise returned and then quieted back down again. I have alot of knowledge and mecanical skills (Master Ace Tech) and been thru numerous schools over my life time (I'm 61) I certainly don't know everything and am constantly learning. I need to watch all your Vids and see if you've found anything. To me, mine almost sounds EGR related but I dont know how or if their using EGR. Thanks! Also the shop had a rough time with the software side of this. They said it was a tier 2 ?. This is deep but maybe it has somthing to do with timing advance and retard with warming up included in the mix. Mine idles smooth and quiet after warmup. It's rough and noisy on the passenger side bank during warmup (and sounds more like exahust) I am searching for signs of any leaks.
Part 2 explains my issue but yours sounds different. Definitely let us know what it ends up being. Always like to learn and build our knowledge base
Almost sounds like the lifters are pumping up with oil? Maybe you have a faulty one that is draining down. Occasionally new lifters are faulty
I just talked about dod and supercharger upgrades today in a vid I just uploaded couple hours ago
I'll check it out!
On Startup there's no noise only once it gets warm that's going to start making the lifter noise
I’m having the exact same problem after doing mine did you guys ever figure out what it was
A diesel conversion???
I did the gen Iv afm delete from Texas speed and am having the exact same noise did you find anything?
Part 2 goes through exactly what went wrong. Hope it isn't the same issue I had!
How do I know my lifters are starting to fail? I hear a noise in my 2018 Serria.
Sounds like a freaking diesel
Yup 😅😅 of only it was a diesel upgrade
Do you recommend the range afm disable for my 2015 silverado 5.3
It helps but doesn't prevent the failure sadly.
Do you guys do tuning in your shop? I’ve been wanting to do the afm delete and a cam swap in my 2015 .. just haven’t found a local shop to do the tune.. I’m in NY
We don't do the tuning in house unfortunately :( there is a shop of the street EFX that does tuning I believe and I've heard good things
Where in NY. There’s a few shops in the Albany area that can do it
The missing 10mm is in there 🔧🤔
🤣😅
GM had an issue with Chinese knock off lifters so you may have gotten one of those.
Oh wow didn't know that. That was not my issue tho. You'll see in the next few vids what happened
Great videos I am replacing my engine that went bad I bought a good used motor 65,000 I have decided to put the GPI afm delete kit in engine before I put it in my 15 so I'm wondering did you ever figure out the noises and do you have a video of the problem thanks for the videos
Glad the videos have been helping, watch the next video and you'll see. GPI was great tho, they took care of everything
Is there a updated video on what the noise was what was the issue
Yes. The next two videos in the playlist go through the issue :) they are linked in the description
You installed a diesel…..cool.
Exactly what it sounds like lol
The L83 diesel!
haha pretty much
I did took out the engine and went through everything again 2 * couldn't find nothing wrong
Nice update I would really like to know what the issues are with the motor for this build. Hope you guys get it sorted out soon and props on the shop as well
Thanks man! We did figure out the issue and will have an update video in a few days
What is your rocker arm ratio?
Ima a GM fan but I’m honestly losing faith in the pushrod v8 in general making me want to go coyote i did the afm/dod delete on my my 08 5.3 and I got no oil pressure I made sure no to nick any bearing s on cam replacement used proper assembly lube and all new gaskets and seals every where
The oil pump needs to be exactly aligned. If it isn't you can run into issues.
I messaged you on Facebook. I’m having the exact same issue with my GPI l83 swap.
Aww man that stinks. I'll go checkout your message
Doing this exact same thing, question how did you prime the motor? Also, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Thanks! Hope the series helps you out! Turn it over as much as you can before starting, pre-oil/soak everything, and use assembly lube. Want to have everything well lubricated
@@TheSundaeDrive this series inspired me to make my truck my own, thank you for your time and knowledge!
@@rocky44105 awesome! Love hearing that!
Ouch…
yeah - that was a fun experience lol - luckily we got it all squared away!
why didnt you just disable it with a superchips calibrator?
Doesn't remove the faulty lifters which still fail regularly when disabled. Bad design unfortunately.
Everyone get together file a CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT against the manufacturers of the DOD/AFM system. !! GET PAID BACK ALL THE DAMAGES DONE BY IDIOT ENGINEERS ! FAILED SYSTEM!
This was the noise in ours
Sounded like a freakin diesel!! That thing is running like crap!
Is there any metal in the oil filter?
I've swapped the motor since but I am planning to take this motor apart and see if any metal shavings got to the oil filter. I'm hoping they blew out the exhaust valves and didn't disperse throughout the motor. It is probably a loss tho.
@@TheSundaeDrive pop the front cover off and pull the cam gear. Also the cam solenoid is one time use. I have seen cam pin shear on start up with no oil. When you get it apart check oil passages for possible blockages. Make sure gaskets aren't blocking paths. Or any debris blow air through every thing.
Good tips!
It's the tune bro you need to disactivate the dod
I wish it was that simple of solution. Sadly it was not.
1
Would buying this 200 dollar range chip do the same thing
No. It's a bandaid that doesn't stop the lifters from failing unfortunately
Break the seals in your VLOM
Then install a metal « barrier » in your oil pressure sensor on top of the VLOM.
+ Range you’ll be fine and dine
@@TheSundaeDrive the truck hasn’t been burning oil as it used to without the chip 🤔 I ain’t no mechanic by the way
Not a nice sound to have in your engine bay!
Not at all! Unless it is a diesel maybe lol
Oil pickup o ring. Pump us sucking in air. 🤷🏽♂️
What's the difference between DoD delete mechanically or with a tuner?
A tuner just disables V4 mode but the engine still has special lifters in it that collapse to turn off 4 of the 8 cylinders. Since there are 16 lifters total, that means 8 of the lifters are for DoD. Any single one of those lifters is prone to failing and tuning them out doesn’t technically solve the issue.
Holy shit! Fuck these motors I'm def just gunna buy an LS!
Spoiler Alert !!
If you want to know what they did wrong...It is NOT in this video ! Ffs
video starts at the end smh....
That was a waste of time video.
Part 2 shows the issue we found 👍
Yea, if you haven't watched the rest of the videos. There are VERY few videos like this on youtube, and this is one of the best.
Damn that sounds bad!!! Sounds like a spun bearing
Definetely not the sound you want to hear. Good guess but that wasn't the issue. Next video covers it :)
@@TheSundaeDrive i know what it is, cylinder de activation fucked this motor up, its stupid honestly, trying to save gas while driving a v8 is like a ghost trying to eat, you either get reliability or you save gas, the way this motor sounds, sounds like you didn't save anything lol
Funny thing is, some of the new gm trucks don't have it because of the chip shortage. Hope it stays that way
To much info.
Cam phaser !!!!!
Coyote please🤣
each oil change)= very expensive fully synthetic Oil, Bottle Lucas synthetic Lube , and often Oil change, not longer then 3,500 k miles , Lifter will last till engine makes 350.000 miles
And then just buy From Amazon RANGE DEVICE
THAT'S ALL
Frequent oil changes and the range device should extend the life but I'm not sure if the is failsafe. How many miles are you up to so far?
@@TheSundaeDrive
My truck has a around 200.000 miles, 2007 Yukon 4x4
I'm using that Oil changes procedure ever since,
And just start Using RANGE device recently ,
I feel my 4l60e downshift so smother, never before,
I don't know how long RANGE DEVICE will work,
God will help
But i feel sorry for my truck i didn't knew for this device 3 years ago, when i just bought a truck.
. Reason I'm trying RANGE device,
(1. transmission downshift, and nbr. 2. trying to avoid future valve lifters problems, ) bec. Truck is 2007, Rite
And all gmc guys talking about this afm issue, so I'm was afraid, i just heard recently about this afm Issue
Fortunate you were changing the oil so frequently. The AFM on the older trucks has a much higher failure rate than on my gen and newer from what I understand. Of course, not everyone will experience the issue. I wish you the best of luck!
@@TheSundaeDrive GOD bless U Br.🤝👍
thats a gas to diesel conversion.. lol
lol yup that's what it sounds like
At least you learned how dumb it was
Move along, this has no useful info
You are out of your mind and obviously havent watched all of the videos. This is extremely informative.
You talk to much!!!.....get to the point!!!!
Gen 5s are trash
What product you used lol not texas speed performance parts lol we dontbe best ones
So you made a video with no freaking instructions… 10 minutes of wasted time. You could’ve saved that.
